On the inside of the carbon I saw the name TORAY laser etched into the panel. They are in fact one of the worlds largest producers of raw carbon fiber materials, so it was neat to see their name on the panel.
Toray does the best carbon fibers so this is a good sign.
I bet Lenovo held their breath until the end of the video. Very impressed the laptop booted up just fine!
or they sent another unit :D
@@danielbrenzel292 🤡
it took a wee bit to boot up though
@@stiviajazi It was probably error checking since it was restarting when Zack closed the lid at 1:47 before doing the teardown.
Lenovo doesn't care. Really.
Jerry is incredibly generous with thermal paste. Thumbs up for that
Better to have a little too much than have a 10°C delta in your hotspot sensors lol
Tbf this is directly on die, not on an IHS like in PCs so here you *have* to make sure that every little bit is covered in paste or you can literally break the CPU
Actually, less than more in this case. CPU temp differences of a degree or so in some cases. EDIT: this is direct die. Usually less is more, but in this case it's fine.
EDIT: ignore this. Did not realize this was direct die.
@@drpixelcat9408 The excess paste is only going to be squished out. Having direct die contact like that it's way better to have extra, because you need every little bit covered when doing it like that. It's not transferring the heat anywhere like an IHS so the slightest dry spot can fry your chip.
3:40 after a lot of eye squinting and toothpick pointing, I counted 96 individual fan blades
U can zoom in on videos on RUclips now

There are 96 outer blades, 20 internal rotor points, and 19 bi-amnios torsion anchors. 135 total doximinal ven1 contacts, (not including the point of rotation)
1:48 I love, how it said „Restarting“ instead of shutting down.
I love that the battery is not glued in!
Isn't that the case with every laptop?
@@NamasteProgramming im pretty sure it is, imagine buying a laptop with a glued in battery.
That would probably be samsung or something
@@NamasteProgramming Nope... Looking atcha, Apple...

Lenovo, or any other tech company for that matter, must be tripping if they think they can send you or Linus something and expect you not to open it :P

Zach got tired tearing down smartphones, so he's tearing down laptops now.
More of this please. 😁
he also tore down a humvee... also what if baby JerryRig becomes an internal medicine doctor? Would that also count as a teardown?
I agree! I would love to see some surface tear downs
Wait till Tesla SEMI get the same treatment. I know I am waiting. :)
NO, I dont care about laptops. Only PC, consoles and Smartphones.
98 Blades, I hope I didn't miss any.
Hey Zach, just as a note, almost all laptop displays that don't have screws have those magic pull tabs, the same as found on iphone batteries, the same on this one you just needed to pull on the bottom part and you could remove the screen without any prying or heat.
This is more like iphone a iphone display which does need heat and prying
Very interesting. Thanks for the teardown.
You using the LTT screwdriver without even mentioning it AND with the great sounds of its mechanics really make me wanna buy one for a christmas self gift.
interesting to see how much thinkpads and lenovo consumer laptops are now blending together. kinda sad the ram is soldered tho. wish that was upgradeable.
Just like the Thinkpads...
@@MarkusNemesis sadly yes. Its kinda depressing.
Biggest reason for soldered RAM is the size footprint of SO-DIMM(beside the obvious monetary one). And with everything supposed to be so slim nowadays it simply doesn't fit in many cases.
@@MrBl00 yea no i get that its a size issue, im still sad abt it.
@@jokeletsplay It's not only the size, it's also that for DDR5 it's hard to get high speeds with non-soldered ram at the moment. Hope it gets better.
Actually, Carbon Fiber is a bad material for wireless and mobile signals. That's why there is no Carbon Fiber phone case, just Aramid Fiber(Kevlar).
There ist no difference to metal.
Happy to catch one of your videos within the first few minutes 😆 I’ve been watching for about 7 years now 😂😂
I'm still baffled how you can make a laptop with soldered RAM, ports integrated with the motherboard and a giant warranty void if removed sticker, and still make the modularity the main talking point of the sponsorship
if it has enough ram, I don't see anyone performing ram upgrades. Most of the time it's usually storage because you want more and it's a consumable
also for a smaller form factor/superlight laptop, you almost NEVER see upgradability, so that's pretty sweet that they managed to pop it in
It doesn't really need removable RAM, 16gb is enough for this type of laptop. It's not a studio/gaming laptop, more like office or travel one
@@sp22ce Yeah, that more or less the point I was trying to make; for the audience it's targeted at, a RAM upgrade is honestly unnecessary.
@@AshrZ and I completely agree with you. I think the modularity comments were Zack's own thoughts, not the selling point of the laptop. Other than RAM, it's as modular as one would expect from any laptop
Tbh for a laptop so thin and light, I was expecting it to be all soldered and glued inside. I was surprised how easy that came apart.
2:33 ....forbidden candy bar.....
I mean... You _could_ eat it
Glad to see how easy this laptop is to disassemble.

This is the very first video of him that I've watched, and at the beginning I was wondering why there were cutters and tools around him. I wasn't prepared for the opening and scratching of the laptop, and I got goosebumps all the way. 😂 but this is a very good video. I was searching for reviews for this laptop because I'm intending to buy this.
3:00 a very modular laptop we got here
You astound me. I tore apart computers, before laptops even, and then redid the motherboards, which involved mainly circuit design and boards. I had help. Thank goodness, it was hard even back then. But I was witness to the entire evolution, including Apple and the 6502 (I typed that from memory!) - I did machine code for these little beasts back then. I guess that's why I'm hooked to your channel, but mainly it's because you can disassemble any of these little beasts and put them back together again. Hell, I can't even see them anymore.

This also shows just how far Jerry has come to be, from phones, tabs, now a laptop... wish Jerry did durability test tho

Dude I rock the Lenovo Yoga 7 Slim for the second year now...Still works and looks flawlessly. 👌
Great video!

I got the same its just called the Ideapad Slim 7. Almost 2 years for me next month and its still just as fast as day one when I bought it.
I have been impressed with the quality of every Lenovo device I've owned (with the exception of one Lenovo tablet), so it is no surprise to me that the Yoga Carbon holds up to your testing.
That LTT screwdriver looks great
I wish I could have a laptop even half as good as this one for school 😭😭

My man your humor is low-key awesome
The second you opened up the laptop I thought "Isn't this the Framework Laptop", it looks SO similar inside
They probably took inspiration from framework, similar to how dell did
Honestly I'm so surprised he didn't make a video on the Framework, while this lenovo laptop is fine, the framework is still much more repairable
I got the Lenovo Slim 7i Pro X and absolutely love it. This laptop seems relatively similar and I'm confident you'll love it.
1:38 Thanks
Loved your desktop clean-up!
I think it's good to see a laptop that prioritizes portability instead of trying to be a desktop. I either want a real desktop or a light, portable laptop I can carry around wherever, anything else is a compromise.
He has outstanding skills opening a screen
He said "I do do work"! 😅 Zack does great work, but I'm really impressed with the Lenovo Yoga, seems extremely well designed.
You make me want to dismantle all electronics in my house
Hope everyone is aware that you can take the 'void stickers' and not worry about it. FTC has ruled -
Those ‘warranty void if removed’ stickers are illegal, says the FTC. No longer will you have to resign yourself to a life in which you refrain from pulling off stickers that read “warranty void if removed.”
Pro tip: laptops with narrow screens have reusable adhesive strips with visible pull tabs, DO NOT APPLY HEAT, those were in the bottom, take the whole lid out and disassemble it completely
Without making this wierd I can listen to you all day 👀. Thx bud 🤟🏼
Kinda weird bro

small tip : the screen has two pull tabs just like the iPhone battery you pull them form the bottom corner sides and you don't need heat to remove the screen
Hey @JerryRigEverything, I actually worked on this laptop at work verifying performance and power for the Intel processor! Glad to see it was given to you for review. The Evo sticker you see was part of my job!

Nicely done - thanks for this informative video.
I've never seen Jerry this careful during tear down🤠 unwilling to scratch or break anything.
maybe lenovo told him to be careful - its all about the future contract
Sounds like he's planning on it being his main laptop, so he probably didn't want to break it.

That desktop cleanup was something though.
nothing like needing a new laptop and a new video at the same time.
That void sticker is illegal in the U.S. anyway. They can't void your warranty if you open the back lid.
4:27 "When compared to an average 2year old laptop" Ok Tim Apple calm down. But in all seriousness this is apples way of marketing and i hate it when the processor compared to isnt mentioned
I like how on this laptop the storage is upgradable vs the Macbooks where the ssd is soldered in.

Nice. I have a high-end Macbook, and desktop PC, but the computer I use most is a near 13 year old Toshiba M780 Tablet PC (Laptop twisting screen with touch and digitizer.) In Thirteen years I replaced the Keyboard and upgraded the HDD to SSD and and swapped the Wi-fi card to add AC, oh and now has Win 10 pro on it, but this little i7 with 8GB Ram still does most of what I need, in a small rugged package.
I've got an older carbon yoga similar specs 16gb ram touchscreen etc. When I look at it through the microscope it looks like lots of tiny bits of carbon dust all moulded into resin looks weird under the scope
Great another ad thats just what we needed
Cool to see insides of a laptop I see daily at work when repairing them. Our company sells them to schools with repair and service as students sometimes have accidents and don't take such good care as some might think.
That's why every kid's phone screen is cracked, while my iphone 6s+ finally cracked after 7 years.
I work in school tech support. Our student devices primarily consist of Chromebooks. We used to use Windows device, but those have been largely phased out several years ago. Even with the Chromebooks, the kids still like to pick off the keys, rearrange them to spell expletives, and a few with broken screens. A lot of these kids don't really care about them.
During distance learning, we had numerous Chromebooks come back snapped in half or broken screens or missing keys. It was a mess.
Almost the end of 2022 and I am still using the Lenovo X230 purchased in 2013 in the top configuration for this model i7-3520m 16GB Ram 256GB SSD with backlit keyboard, LTE modem and 44 ++ (9-cell) battery. Of course, the mandatory jailbreak from 1vyrain and the icing on the cake, the Nitrocaster modification with the installation of Full HD IPS. It works like gold, the only plan for the next few days is to buy a new original battery because the one bought in 2013 with the laptop lasts a maximum of 1.5 hours. The laptop has traveled half the world with me and has never let me down, unfortunately they don't make such durable devices anymore. The equipment as a workhorse works great, it is known that it does not have such performance as models with the latest processors, but it is still a good option for an inexpensive and reliable laptop.
Hey Jerry, I'm still using my maxed out Asus U36SD from 2012. Still works pretty good.
So glad to see you getting rid of Edge! Nice teardown and I'm surprised it survived, enjoy it!

Nice! Great job with the screen sir! There's not much IBM Thinkpad DNA left there anymore, but for the most part Lenovo laptops are pretty rock solid!
perfect amount of thermal paste 👌
7:49 I didn't know that you put them back together again
Desktop cleanup! Proceeds to drag the Edge icon into the Recycle bin! LOL!
To be clear, carbon fiber has excellent thermal conductivity, but it's highly anisotropic (directionally dependent) and of course the amount and properties of resin can alter that. So there could be other explanations such as cost, geometry, etc.
