Alkaline
“She’s not acid nor alkaline
Caught between black & white
Not quite either day or night
She’s perfectly misaligned”
The ph levels of acid is anything below 7, alkaline is anything above 7. The only substance that is perfectly in between is water, which is the album’s theme. Alkaline is the 7th song on the album, and perfectly in center of the three album trilogy.
In Greek mythology, the god Hypnos is the personification of sleep who lives in a cave in the underworld only accessible through large bodies of water. The river Lethe (forgetfulness) runs from his cave is known to be where day and night meet. The river would erase the memory of whoever would drink from it.
The fact that he thought out the lyrics and album concept that far is absolute genius! 💖

I always liked the line “if anything, she’s an undiscovered element” which I thought to mean that she’s kinda unknown, or in between as far as feelings go. It wasn’t until listening a bunch that I remembered that any undiscovered element that is “found” is very highly likely to be unstable due to the high number of protons. So, I now take that line as “oh, there’s a very likely chance she’s unstable” packaged up as another lyric to display the “not acid nor alkaline” message of indifference.

They use three female backup singers during live shows, enabling them to do these vocal layers.

Vessel is an absolute genius. A brilliant, highly original songwriter, a gifted multi-instrumentalist, and imho a world-class poet on top of it all. Just stunning.
There music is like nothing I've ever heard. Their music brings me to tears....almost every time.
I am 50 yo and have loved all music and NOTHING had made me feel like ST I’ve been listening to them non stop for over a year and I NEVER get tired of it. I’ll literally miss them when I don’t hear them once a day. Worship 🖤
Distraction is seriously underrated imo. Vessel doesnt just have a beautiful voice, but he also always manages to sing with so much emotion every. Single. Time.

I saw them live last year and it was musically life changing!
They are called Espera. Vesselettes is a name the fans call them but the sleep token crew have said they don't like it. They call them the choir or by their name Espera.

I would definitely recommend listening to the live version of “Fall for Me” from Lafayette, it’s really beautiful with vessel’s piano and the crowd!
I'd recommend you to give Fall for Me another go but this time with the music video because that is a whole 'nother level of heavy that I never felt in so long.

The love you want music video explains alot, they don't have many music videos but the one for that is excellent.
Vesselettes sing with him live and they are wonderful!

I will join the preverbial chorus and say that Fall For Me isn't complete without the music video. It is emotional in a simplistic way. I'm always sad while listening to Fall For Me because of the video.

It's a common consensus in the community that those of us who create music (and art in general) were so moved and inspired by ST that we picked up our instruments again after a long time. There is such a power in their music, and it rekindles even the most burnt-out artists. 🥹 I cannot WAIT for you to see them live. Did you catch that lyric in Alkaline - "it's too late for me now; I am altered," which leads directly into Distraction and the repeated line, "it's too late for me"? There are no coincidences with Vessel.
And yes, there are 3 backup singers in the live performances.

I think it’s very cool how people have different ideas about what these songs mean. I have a feeling that his general aim is to talk about the form of love and self deception and elation and pain. I know people talk about sleep or some relationship but I think he’s talking about the spirits we’re “possessed” by. It’s difficult to lay out exactly what I mean. I don’t mean “The idea of love” But love as an actual spirit that moves us through life. Any who. I know I’m rambling. Great series here.

Fall for Me is the most powerful of STs video. Be prepared if you view it. Vessel is in the video. But not in the way you expect. You might need something to clear your tears.

Fall For Me has such Imogen Heap vibes. I’m curious if it’s a tip of the cap with them both being from the UK. She kinda created that sound with that strange instrument.
Also so many nods to chemistry in their music so putting Alkaline in the middle and the possible tipping point of the album from acid to base is such a cool idea.
Vessel is pretty clever
I’m convinced Vessel is some sort of genius. Like a modern day Mozart 😆 Actually, ST’s songwriting reminds of classical music because many of their songs are broken down into movements that evoke different feelings and emotions

I wouldn’t say the girl who he writes these songs about is lucky considering the fact majority of ST’s songs are about a toxic relationship 😭 I mean, The Love You Want (the song you said that during) is about a relationship where Vessel and his ex had obviously split and he’s saying “you want love, I still have it.” The whole “too many swallowed keys will make you bleed internally” line goes back to the “seems your heart is locked up and I still get the combination wrong” line, and he’s essentially saying “you left me, I did my best to give you that love, but it was to no avail. Try it with too many others, and you’ll just get hurt in the end”

Alkaline was the first Sleep Token song I heard and although I love pretty much everything they write, nothing has come close to Alkaline. For my tastes, it's the perfect song. The breakdown hitting in that 2nd verse never gets old.
I didn't connect with album like I did with their other 2 records. Like this, Atlantic and Alkaline were the only songs that really resonated with me.
So far the other two are my faves but I need to give this one a couple more listens
To me, the sleep stuff is not even a thought really. Tbh, it seems like an afterthought for them as well (obviously I would not know). These are about a woman and a relationship they had. Here’s my take, albeit a grim one: a sleep token is a razor. Just my thoughts, coming from an adult in their 30s. Watching sleep token reaction videos serve as a nice break from mundane office work, so thanks for these!
