    In this lesson we will teach the fundamentals and foundations of 2D sketching in Fusion 360. The battle of Fusion 360 is won or lost at the 2D sketch level. Success at sketching in Fusion 360 hangs on being able to understand Constraints. Constraints can be your worst enemy or your best friend. By understanding what they do, and how to think about them, will allow you to master 2D sketching, and hence master 3D design.

    I have never commented before on "the RUclips" so this is special. Paul has an exceptional presentation style that suits me perfectly. In general I hate instructional RUclips videos. Paul is a master teacher. He makes no assumptions about what you know, this is very hard to do. He does not waste our time with senseless blather. He is willing to even show himself making mistakes because it informs. I have held off learning anything in the Autodesk space because what their materials show is not relevant to me and so poorly done. So much instruction tells you what buttons to push and never make an effort to teach you how to think about something. My ignorance is being transformed and ideas are exploding in my head. I am so looking forward to lesson 6. For the impatient, Paul has other excellent 360 tutorials that come from a different internet archeological era but am so happy he is updating and targeting my e3v2.

      I second this.
      I never commented on RUclips at all. But seeing this tutorial to learn Fusion 360 easy and quick compared to the other not so beginner friendly and complex videos.
      Mr Paul, I am going to Uni in a few months and rather having a class or something to teach me, your videos let it be Arduino or Fusion 360 is truly one of a kind. Thank you for all your efforts.🙏🙏

    Lots of good info that usually beginners miss.
    Bolt hole circles remind me of my machinist apprenticeship 30 years ago. One of the tasks to pass year 2 was to calculate, sketch and drill a given bolt circle usually 5 or 7 holes using just a scientific calculator for the trig. This was on a manual Bridgeport mill with no digital readout so we had to account for backlash of the table screws as well. I messed up a few before I got the hang of it. We were given an hour to finish. Now a modern CNC mill with conversational programming you can do it perfect in 5 minutes.

      Really amazing how easy new tools can make things, but I really love the old school ways. I am not against using the new automated features, but think it is great is we still understand what is happening under the hood.

    The concept of 'designing in' relationship constraints between parts, makes it sooo much easier to modify later. Big lesson here for me. It reminds me of using variables at the start of code. Way easier to modify later. Fantastic lesson here ... Thank you.

    I made mistakes following along and then would see Paul make some of thos same mistakes and then how to fix - which is a bonus! I like that he challenges you to see if you can think how to solve a situation. Of course, pause and then attempt on your own.     Dear Paul, i can say that these lessons made me starting understand 360, I have to admit that i will passed them again and again until i am confident to work... I am watching 2 lessons daily.but again i for sure have to come back again when in need. I also would like to say that i have not found such any lessons smooth and easy understanding as yours, and i mean it. I am from the small island of Malta in the Med, and unfortunately not much help even from locals on 360. Big thank you again from my hearth.

I played with Fusion a while back and the person I watched did not cover what you covered in this lesson and last lesson and despite actually drawing something pretty cool I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes and therfore as soon as I tried to go off on my own I was lost.     Great video again. Learned a lot about constraints today. Got started late in this series so this may already been pointed out: if you select an element and then type an x from the keyboard, it will toggle construction on and off.

    Reading the top comment here made me smile. I have only ever commented on Top Tech Boy. Paul is simply worth the effort! Paul's style is slow, but very deliberate. Even with that comment, I have to pause to see the exact process to achieve the objective. So I appreciate the consistent reinforcing process that is used to teach those watching. I've repeatedly returned to TTB's channel for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and Linux because of Paul's excellent teaching style.

    Just wanted to point out that, for example, if you want 2 lines parallel, and neither have any constraints or dimensions, after clicking the Parallel command, which ever line you click first is the "master" and the second line you click will move to accommodate it in order to satisfy the parallel constraint. So if your having issues with the wrong line moving when you don't want it to, this might be the reason.

    You're a proper instructor, unlike many RUclipsrs today. I really appreciate your traditional way of educating. It's quite refreshing. I hate to say this, but many young people today memorize techniques but don't really "learn" them. They are smart but are not learning. In fairness to them, they are overwhelmed with endless amounts of information. They jump from one topic to the next in minutes. But, the world needs more people learning from teachers like you, and less people watching silly cat videos.

    I love your courses Paul. I have ben taking the Arduino course for a while, and decided I wanted to learn Fusion too. We've enjoyed messing with our printer, but TinkerCad only gets you so far :) But now I'm finally starting to understand Fusion360 (even if I still have a love/hate relationship with it ;) ).     Another great lesson on Fusion 360 fundamentals. I think the difficulty will be in translating the idea of a design into the appropriate constraints between the parts of the design.

    Hi Paul,
    i love your lessons, and i have learned a lot from your, and looking already further to the next lesson from fusion 360.
    i struggle still a little bit with constrains, especially with making a hole for an 25p D-connector.
    the connector is fully black, and i can move no parts from it, everything is locked, but i have no lock.
    But i still try further until i have solved this problem.
    I have bought a PRUSA i3 MK3S+ KIT, and this printer works perfect, and print without cosmetic faults, and also de dimension's are in spec.
    Maybe it is a good idea to extent the course fusion 360 with a few lessons moving parts.
    It looks me great to see how gears are moving etc.
    This looks me a good tool to check your design before starting to print it.

    Great lessons on fusion 360 and 3d printing. I was thinking that a neat practical project would be to create a fairly simple raspberry pi case. This would also be a practical application to use digital calipers as they would be required to make the case to fit the raspberry pi properly to align mounting holes and accommodate all the usb connectors and the other connectors.

      Yes. Particularly if we had a little project where you made a portable device, in a slick case. Also, thinking at some point we will want to get Pi Zero W which is just like the pi but very small. HOpe we can do some portable projects.

    I'm committed to getting through all of these lessons, my calipers arrived today as well. I got held up for a few days when my Fusion 360 software started crashing on startup. I updated everything I could think of including drivers and still could not run the software. Eventually I found there is an environment variable that can be added "QT_OPENGL" with value "software". I assume this just moves rendering off the GPU and on to the CPU likely with a cost to performance although these aren't super sophisticated designs so I assume it will be fine. I'm running an i9 with 3080ti so I am a little disappointed that the Fusion 360 software is having trouble with GPU rendering.

    Hi Paul ..... question, can i print a sketch on a normal paper printer, as a drawing ??
    Another point, can i find somewhere a keyboard shortcuts to easily select functionality of the Fusion, i do it for Line, Rect, Circle, Dimention, Extrude, i guess there is much more
    for example CTRL+Z for Reverse editing ..... I am on a Linux system many years, so keyboard, command line edition is my lovely part to speedy access to a system, work flow, etc.

    Hi Paul. Love the course. Can anyone help me. At 32.00 the drawing of 2 circles, i have locked, when i put the lines in and constrain with tangents, it does not lock, i am following your drawing step by step ! Any Ideas ?
    EDIT Ok, I think i found a way, after constraining lines with tangent i then have to grab end of line and move till an X appears on circle, then it constrains the tangent with a coincedent. So it seems the tangent cant lock because the length of the line can still be extended passed the circle !

      A lot of it comes down to getting a really flat bed, cleaning the bed, and big prints that are wide and tall are more likely to warp. After those things, play around with the bed temperature or print on a raft.

    Hi all, Question, in 2019 I built a Arduino and I now need to pull the info from it so I dont have to rebuild it from scratch. I am a advanced beginner. At that time I was was cut and pasting other ppl code. So can you load from a Mega to the computer. i know it complies it but is there a way to decomplie?

      you can not get the code back. It was compiled, and then zeros and ones downloaded to the arduino. You can not undo it. Code is lost.

    Tried to draw a 25p D-connector. choose a fixed point from orgin. use a 3point rectangle.42,52x11,41. 4 circles diameter 6,7.2 side lines from 10 degrees. use tangent for the 4 circles. then the lines are all black but no lock. i have tried it on many ways without any success. who can help me out?

      click around on it and see what part can be moved. Some part you have either not diminsioned, or not constrained. Poke around on it till you find what moves.

      thanks for the fast reaction. All lines around the connector are fixed and black. i think it is something whit the 10 degree lines on both sides from the connector but also that looks ok. it makes me crazy. tried already 4 hours and 25 tryouts.

      Solved after 25 tryouts.
      the solution was.
      first make the sketch.
      then add dimensions.
      then add the sketch to the origin point.
      i will never forget this

    Just to let everyone know if your drawing gets too complicated our free versions of the Fusion 360 software will deliver an error message and you will not be able to continue.

      DrDave, in such cases it is usually not that we are using the free version, but we have created an error. You have to think of fusion 360 as if you were writing a program, and each step you do is a line of code. You can have a bug in your code. If you are doing a lot of backing up, undoing and re-editing prior sketches, you can introduce errors. If you get in a mess like that sometimes it is better to just start over.

      @@paulmcwhorter The error message was that my document limit had been reached, so I clicked on My Editable Documents, and they numbered 10, which is the max for us to have. That’s when we get the message. I thought it was the complexity of the drawing.
