  • Guys I will be teaching how to use Engineering Calipers, and they will be an important part of most future lessons. You can get the calipers I am using at the following link:

You guys can help me out over at Patreon, and that will help me keep my gear updated, and help me keep this quality content coming:
    / paulmcwhorter
In this class we will be using the Creality Ender 3 V2 Printer. Your life and my life will be easier if we are working on the same hardware. You can pick up your printer on amazon at the following link: [affiliate link]
    amzn.to/3GaGn25
You will also want to stock up on some filament for your printer. I like the eSun PLA. Here is a link to what I am using:
    amzn.to/3yXhYLz
The link shows you can get different colors. I like the orange.
In this lesson we will teach the fundamentals and foundations of 2D sketching in Fusion 360. The battle of Fusion 360 is won or lost at the 2D sketch level. The key concept of todays lesson is that anything that can be modified at the 2D level should be modified at the 3D level. Never edit a model in 3D when the same effect can be achieved by modifying at the sketch level. In this video we show the powerful design tools Fusion 360 offers for modifying 2D sketches.

Great lesson, I want to show some short-cuts since those might be helpful.
    L for line
    R for Rectangle
    C for Circle
Esc to get out of the tool you're using (Basically it'll get you on the select tool)
    D for dimension
    T for Trim
    F for fillet
X will turn your line Construction/Normal
    O for offset
And you can hover over a tool, let's just say fillet there will be 3 dots (The info) click that, then you can change the keyboard short cut to what you want.
I don't know if this would be considered a short cut, but basically you can click the mouse wheel button down, and that will pan you around. If you click the mouse wheel button down WHILE clicking shift, you will orbit.
    Hope this is helpful!

Its amazing how quickly Fusion 360 goes from intimidating to intuitive with these videos. Since I've discovered your channel I've found myself following along with your tutorials in my free time rather than indulging in the typical RUclips brain damage lol. After completing your python tutorial I've realized how fun and useful it can be to learn a new skill when approached the right way. You are a great teacher. Thank you for the entertaining and educational videos.

I got a good portion through your first Fusion 360 Tutorial by translating from the older version to the newer version of Fusion 360. I managed to make and print quite a few designs from those tutorials... but summer 2022 happened.. I'm back this spring and delighted to find that you have created an entire new series of tutorials based on the newest version of Fusion 360! I now have two Creality Ender 3 printers... I felt I needed a spare, just in case :) I have actually been keeping both printers busy since February on a large project I took on and having the second printer makes one of them available for printing lessons more readily :)
Unfortunately, I have not yet taught myself much about uploading video to RUclips, so I will have difficulty posting my homework :/ (One thing at a time).
I did do extra homework to make a few things from the concepts in lesson 7. At some point, I will make an attempt to post them.
Thank you for your tutorials! At some point, I will also make my way to patrion.
    Great Job Kind Sir!

Another great lesson. I rarely use trim. I feel the loss of constraints is not worth the trouble of having a perfect sketch. In your key hole example the tangent constraint symbol is placed away from where you originally created the tangent when you trim. Someone looking at that sketch later might have a hard time seeing that constraint. But that is my personal preference and your approach is valid as well. Thanks for the lessons

For me lesson 7 was a wonderful transformation in understanding how to use Fusion 360. It was actually better than that, it transformed how I am now looking at what I can do with 3d printing. The homework assignment caused me to come full circle. The first thing I printed with my e3v2 was a Shoji screen lamp that I downloaded from Thingiverse. One of the reasons I started F360 with Paul was so I could make such things from first principles. In order to do the exercise for lesson 7 right I could not just trace, I had to understand what was actually going on in this fork of Japanese Joinery, i.e. understand the deep constraints behind the pieces. After wrestling with F360 constraints and finally making all the pieces dance with the minimum number of constraints which I could modify, I now have a Shoji Screen Lamp factory. But what is exploding in my head and keeping me up at night is that I now see how to design with F360 a "Shoji Esque " all space filling Gizmology. Better yet, I am now looking at the world through "constraint colored eyes".

And so the magic has happened! There is such a rush of joy when you are able to make the complete trip from your own idea, to a strategy for accomplishing it, followed by making it yourself, and then seeing your creation realized on your desk in front of you. I always got a similar joy from wood working. What I am really trying to do is to get young people to discover that joy . . . one much greater than you could ever find in a bottle or a joint. Please share these lessons with young people you know.

At about 34:25 I think I'm following along, yet I'm unable to get the drawing constrained. Is there any significance to the tangent icon being inside the circle or polygon? I noticed it's in the polygon on any attempt I've made at this. The video shows it in the circle. I'm likely doing it wrong, but I don't know how. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I tried to fillet (round off) the sharp corners on the 3d model you created.(keyhole/(starship Enterprise). I clicked on edit sketch (shows fully constrained) I could fillet the first sharp corner, but not any other one and the sketch went from fully constrained to pencil. I went back to fully constrained sketch and started over with the same results. Why can I not fillet the entire back side of the keyhole. Lesson 7 Don't know how to show a picture.

I really like the fillet tool and while following along with the polygon and circle shape, I tried to take the project one step further and fillet the edges of the polygon. I made a really nice-looking shape, but I lost the constraint (lock symbol) in doing this. Just wondering if anyone else tried this and knows the fix for this.

I'm having a little trouble about the @34:30 mark. I followed your steps step by stem, even going as far as to erase everything and follow along multiple times and when I go to make the polygon vertical to fully constrain the sketch, in your demonstration the whole polygon goes black and is constrained. When I follow step by step, only the line I select to make vertical (the same one as you chose) gets constrained. The other 5 lines stay blue and I have no lock. Was there multiple clicks or a key hold when trying to make that vertical. I learned so much from your lessons already. I'm only on this lesson but I've learned enough to make a little design of something I needed and it printed out great. I really want to grasp fusion better though so I really want to learn how to control my constraints better. Thank you SO much for your help and insight. How much is your patreon support? • @paulmcwhorter

Polygons can be a chalenge. Just draw a polygon and play with it. Sometimes you have to make sure the polygon can not rotate by making one side either vertical or horizontal.

    • @jaykote4954

@@paulmcwhorter Thank you. I had to add a construction line that set the distance between the center of the two. Before I could do that I had to delete the tangent constraint. O/w I kept getting error saying it was "over defined." But since I couldn't figure out how to fix until today, I proceeded by deleting the bolt and working just on the nut, which was constrained.
After a while I got the nut to work, including the revolve. But I would not have been able to do this part w/o watching solution in 11.
To finish, I made a copy of the nut in another file. After that I used the "Modify" and was able to replace the nut thread with a 15mm rod (join) of 25mm (15mm below & 10 mm above). I then followed your steps to get thread. I learned join when you talked about it earlier lesson (maybe 7 or 8 -- I can't remember).
I am still struggling. I wish I could have done it in one file. I'm reasonably satisfied. I have tried to learn F360 a year ago. I got no where. With your lessons, this is the furthest I have gotten.
I am looking forward to tutorials on working on x-z plane. That was the hardest part for me in doing the revolve on the nut. I struggled at least 1 hr. to get myself to point where I could draw in the x-z plane and add the two triangles. Very often what works for you, doesn't work for me. Not sure why, but I don't think F360 behaves consistently.
      Thank you!!!
      P.S.
I made the glass box today. I had a book that talked about parameters. I know we have not done it, but I could never make any of that work either. I first did the eyeglass box the regular way. Then I use parameters. That's something I was NEVER able to do!!! I actually got it done today too.
      P.P.S
If you could do a video on how to combine multiple files into one for 3D printing, would be very grateful. It's a nice time saver to print two or more items at the same time. In my case, print nut & bolt at same time.

To change I beams I just edited dimensions of a small set of off to the side construction lines. I know thee are better ways but the exercise was about constraints. :-)
