    So, I did a thing... Thanks to your videos, I've been making BP for about a year now, and I just loaded some brass hulls for my Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel (I don't have anything traditional at the moment). Anyway, I bought the Magtech 12 gauge hulls, filled them with 120 grains of my BP, nitro card, cushion wad, then a 586 grain, .735 cast ball from Lyman's mold, and then an overshot card punched from a cereal box glued down with Elmer's glue. I had to smash down the cushion wad to make everything fit, but when I did, it's like the case was made for this load. It functions beautifully in the Mossberg, but I've only shot into the woods with it yet, so no accuracy report. Man, you have got to try this; it is one hell of a ride!

    I have a Iver Johnson black powder 12 gauge. It was handed down through the family, the original owner was my great uncle that died in 1905. I remember Dad hunting with it using smokeless shells and how they would sometimes get stuck in the chamber or the brass would crack. Dad never knew it was a black powder gun. Years later with the help of the internet I found that the old shotgun was the last black powder model that Iver Johnson made. I hunted with it in the early 70s till I had the money to get something better.

    Anywhere from 7/8 ounces of shot to 1-1/4 oz of shot and 2-3/4 drams to 3-3/4 drams of FFG were used by the old timers in 12 gauge guns. 1-1/4 oz of shot over 3-1/4 drams of black powder was the standard live pigeon load for twelve gauge. The standard target load was 3 drams of FFG under 1-1/8 oz shot, which is an equal measure load.

    I have a box of those Magtech thin brass hulls, and they use oversized internal components, they also use the pistol primers, but here @ 3:50 he had one that clearly had a 209 shotgun primer in it!
    There is a company that makes a thicker billet brass hull that uses the 209 shotgun primers and the 12 gauge internals as well.

    I gotta try a plastic shot cup in my 10 gauge side-by-side. Groups are OK out out of the left barrel, but the right barrel is horrible. I planned on using a plastic shot cup and just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Been loading 100 grains of FG with a half inch cardboard wad. Then I just put an ounce and 5/8 of shot and an os card. Was good enough to get me a double bearded turkey the first try but I missed two birds after that and knew my patterns blew out or I pulled the trigger on the wrong barrel. My plan was to load with a plastic shot cup next time around.

    Question. I load federal paper hulls with 82gr. All the time and love them. My question is what would be a good starting powder charge for a 20ga with say a ¾oz shot load in a plastic hull? I know there are alot a variables with different hulls,wads,wad stackups and all that which i will worry about later. The main goal is to build a decent light recoiling load for my 8 year old daughter that will be squirrel hunting with me this year. I know i can easily load up some light smokless loads but with the powders i have i find them to be inconstant or terrible shot patterens. That and shes becoming a black powder fan as well so theres that lol. Thanks

      My first shotshell reloads were black powder and followed the not great advice of equal volumes of powder to shot. Since read there were actual recipes for safety, and velocity. I did 100gn powder, TP wad and 100 powder grain volume of shot and another to over shot wad with my CVA Wolf a few times. Them things scattered farther apart than the stars in the sky and the recoil was a might uncomfortable, but to be sure for some reason I did it multiple times and it never got more comfortable or less uncomfortable. Beware of logical sounding advice from RUclips. I was listening to someone claiming to be teaching survival skills. Talking bout that old musketloader is making me want to go shoot it though

    • @Everythingblackpowder
      @Everythingblackpowder  3 года назад

      If you’re not sure, then it’s always safer to go with a black powder load. I would start with 60gr of 2F and 1oz of payload. That’s a very mild load and shouldn’t have more than 6000psi of pressure.
      I have an 1887 10ga shotgun that I have to cut the 3.5 plastic hulls down to 2 7/8 so they will chamber, so I know how that routine goes. That method works just fine. If you can get ahold of the 12ga Magtech brass hulls, they are 2.5 and they will work without any modifications to your shotgun.
