I was thinking the same thing. There is no humble bragging in this story at all... just a genuine, decent human being trying to be the best person he can be. And think of the other lives he may save by calling attention to the fact that airlines don't have EpiPens in their FirstAid kits.
I have a non-lethal allergy to nuts (it's generally just a really bad time, but I don't need to go to the ER or anything) and once on a trip the passenger nearby me was chomping down Snickers. It was not a fun flight but luckily it was only an hour. I can't imagine how much it must suck to have a serious allergy, especially on airplanes.
This was actually on my delta flight to Italy- Delta: (announces that there is someone with a nut allergy on board) *4 hours later* Also Delta: (hands out Toblerone with nuts in it to all the passengers)
I have never rode on an airplane but I’m honestly shocked that there isn’t considering I know for a fact this isn’t the first time something like this has happened before and it will happen again. This isn’t just a “one and done” scenario that shouldn’t have happened because sadly these things can’t just be stopped or prevented. Sometimes it just happens which is why accommodations should be made
One of my brother's best friends had a medical emergency on a flight after "cold symptoms" suddenly turned much worse. Unfortunately, there was no one like Dr. Mike on board to help him and the pilots decided an emergency landing was not needed because he seemed stable enough to them. He wound up going into sepsis which could not be reversed in the hospital they finally sent him to upon finishing the flight. He lived long enough for his parents to see him, though he was not conscious, and then he died. He was in his early thirties, a beloved mathematics professor, his disabled brother's only friend, a gifted athlete, a wonderful friend, and the only one who could have given his parents grandchildren. He was one of the kindest and most brilliant people I have ever known. Friends, students and colleagues from around the world sent letters upon his death, which were compiled into a big binder and given to his parents at his funeral. He had such an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Along with him, the future he intended to give his parents of grandkids and a daughter-in-law to comfort and assist them in old age, of nephews and nieces to lift his brother's isolation, was also lost. His parents live in my neighborhood and all the places where their kids and my brother used to play, in the tree fort and basketball court they built, the sandpit with child-sized construction equipment, the garden, and so on, are all empty. The whimsical math toys he made for fun are unused. His brother doesn't come to visit anymore and his parents rarely go on the walks they used to take together every evening. The airline never gave them so much as an apology.
Aaargh! Especially as the person going to sepsis is just going to be "nice and quiet", unconscious passanger and not able to advocate for himself. I so deeply sorry for your loss! 💗
"I'm not a hero" You are. This is the literal definition of a hero. You can still go on being the humble practitioner of medicine that you are...but you're also a hero.
How Delta didn't IMEDIATELY reach out to Dr. Mike and have a 'consultation' meeting with him about how to better improve their medical kits - especially regarding EpiPens - is beyond me.
Just takes one suit where they can realize the potential loss of hundreds of thousands, or millions of of dollars, to keep epipens on board. Human life isn't priceless, but its real expensive to lose without good reason. Safety isn't a product of good will, Safety is a product of human life being too expensive to be frivolous with, WAY too expensive.
As someone that suffers from shellfish allergies and carries an epi pen, I salute you Dr. Mike🫡. Anaphylaxis is the scariest feeling on earth. Bless you. 🙌🏾 🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂

Recently I started working as a FA. During trainig they told me different stories about medical situation. Once passanger passed away and procedures tell that plane has to land in the nearest airport. Others were fuming that they had to land...... So unacceptable

You’re a savior Dr. Mike! As a pharmacist I’m shocked there are no EpiPens on board and hope your story creates changes. Add Narcan too for good measure. These should always be available. You’re living your purpose!
Doesn't surprise me..airlines don't want to spend $500 per plane, every year, just to stock epi pens. Their whole emergency med kit may not cost that much l.
@@JohnSoh I'm convinced they can make deals that would make it cheaper for them. Where I come from, an Epipen costs around 80 bucks and in many countries it is comparable. It is rather the exception that it costs as much as in the USA
Doctor Mike, I don't know which airline you traveled on, but in Europe practically all airlines have epipens on board, they are located in the first aid kit, and yes, the flight attendants are trained to know how to use them. They are also trained to identify different medical conditions, such as angina, heart attack, stroke, shock, and many others, as well as treat them within what is possible. Flight attendants also learn basic life support and how to use a defibrillator. They even need to know how to deliver a baby. In a medical emergency, the first step is to ask passengers if there is a medically qualified person on board. Usually there is a doctor, nurse or paramedic among the passengers, but if this does not happen, it is the flight attendants who provide help to the person. They are also responsible for deciding whether to make an emergency landing, passing this information on to the pilots. That's how things work at every airline I've worked for to date. Happy flights! ;-)

My dad has been a general surgeon for 40+ years. I have been with him at least a dozen times in public places including planes when someone has announced over the loud speaker "Is there a doctor present?". 9 times out of 10 he'll give it a good minute to see if anyone else responds but inevitably he ends up helping. At 75 he is still practicing and we ask when he's going to retire. His answer has always been "When I can no longer help people." Keep helping people, Dr. Mike! ❤
i had this same allergy a few years ago. I remember that I would constantly and inexplicably get hives-usually on my head after I'd fallen asleep, waking me up in a fit of scratching. Eventually, I had a bad enough reaction (my back was pretty much a giant hive) that my parents decided to take me to an allergist. They did their bunch of tests, and that's when I discovered I had the allergy (along with a mild grass allergy). Funnily enough, I remember the exact tick that gave me the allergy: it dug its stupid little head into a not-so-pleasant location during a Boy Scout camping trip. After, like, two years I grew out of it.
Imagine you’re on a plane and you start having an allergic reaction so you ask for a doctor. Then a sleep deprived, homeless looking man comes up to you and tells you to take off your pants

She just had one with Lufthansa who according to her had a small hospital on board in terms of resources. So it you're going to have a medical emergency, do it on a Lufthansa flight xD
Fabulous job, Dr. Mike! Thank you for saving this passenger's life and for breaking down the story in an entertaining and educational way! I've had to call for medical personnel on my flights, but thankfully never something this serious. I love our healthcare workers!
I’m a nurse but I also have panic attacks that can be crippling! When they start the main thing that happens is my throat gets very dry and tight. I remember in nursing school that I learned the mechanism of action in panic attacks is that you get a huge adrenaline surge and that you’re body goes into fight or flight mode. I feel so much better knowing how my panic attacks work and learning about them and how my body responds to them.
I think this just reminds people that you are not just the hot doctor. You are a skilled medical professional and we all appreciate what you and others like you do. Edit: Thank you all for the likes!

True story: this happened to my mom once on a flight and she had such severe social anxiety that when they asked if there was a doctor on board she was terrified to say yes. It took another announcement saying it was a serious matter before she stepped up and ultimately saved the person in first class from a heart attack. Note: she’s an anesthesiologist that focuses in open heart surgery. So she doesn’t interact with patients much and when she does it’s in small doses.
Anxiety is a serious thing. Your mother is a hero. She found herself in an abnormal, terrifying situation and she overcame her fear in order to save someone's life. That's incredible.
This is an absolute heart-warming story. Your mom took the obstacle in front of her and absolutely smashed it. Good for her for being able to get to rise to the occasion, many would have let their anxiety cripple them.
Copper Rabbit allergic reactions are extremely common and also extremely unaccounted for. Sometimes people don’t know their allergies, sometimes people don’t know what’s inside something. I stumbled across your video today and couldn't believe the parallel to an experience i had with a passenger who had a severe peanut allergy. on a flight back from Melbourne Australia to SFO there was a cabin call for "doctor on board" in the early AM. I went through the same debate but ultimately volunteered and found the passenger with severe respiratory stridor at the back of plane in the galley, gasping; long story short, his epipen was in his checked luggage; O2 on and the cardiac needle was the only other option; ultimately a flight attendant carried one and saved the day...thanks for the effort to get these stocked - seems like a no brainer these days...i travel a lot and thought about just stocking one in my carry-on...life changer!

Prices would go up. It would be great if they charged who ever used it like triple the amount of a regular one so they dont waste money and charge us extra
Epipen's are only $123 using goodrx.com without health insurance. Not only should they carry it but that is less than one plane ticket per plane per year. Also they have to have health insurance making the price go down. Also I worked for a camp that go a discount for buying 5 a year so buying in bulk will make the price go down even farther. No excuses if they spit that cost between 50 people that would add less than $3 to each ticket for 1 flight a year. Also Epipen training could be done with CPR training in about 10 minutes and a practice Epipen is $20 .
MY IPHONE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS TICK, TICKS ARE LIKE MY #1 FEAR IN LIFE. I HATEEEEEE THEM. I WAS TELLING MY SISTER AB THIS TICK, AND SHE WAS ALL LIKE "WELL NO IT WONT BE A PROBLEM, BLAH BLAH." I was thinking the same thing. There is no humble bragging in this story at all... just a genuine, decent human being trying to be the best person he can be. And think of the other lives he may save by calling attention to the fact that airlines don't have EpiPens in their FirstAid kits.
Delta: (doesn't stock EpiPens)
Flight attendants: Would you like some complimentary peanuts?
LOL I know, right?!
I laughed out loud when I read this
Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia they wait until your heart stops from lack of oxygen to give you the Epi pen
This was actually on my delta flight to Italy-
Delta: (announces that there is someone with a nut allergy on board)
*4 hours later*
Also Delta: (hands out Toblerone with nuts in it to all the passengers)
I'm surprised they don't have an EpiPen. I mean they serve peanuts on the plane
They actually stopped serving peanuts quite a while ago on many major airlines in the U.S.
@@mattc3265 that's good to hear... I haven't been on a plane in a while...
Ricky Servin exactly
They still serve peanuts on flights. I just went to Virginia and they were all over the plane. I think Virgina’s a big peanut producer.
Sophia Ift which airline?
I hope epi-pens are now available on every flight. It must happen.
I agree ✋🏽
I have never rode on an airplane but I’m honestly shocked that there isn’t considering I know for a fact this isn’t the first time something like this has happened before and it will happen again. This isn’t just a “one and done” scenario that shouldn’t have happened because sadly these things can’t just be stopped or prevented. Sometimes it just happens which is why accommodations should be made
I was literally jabbing like i was using an epipen because of how aggrivated I was
Agreed
I wonder if the thousand dollar price on Epi-pens had actually dropped.
which airline is this?

MERL1N_TV, they aren’t that interested in saving passengers’ lives as they are in saving money.
@@evilsharkey8954 Perhaps - but they should also be concerned with the APPEARANCE of being interested saving passenger lives.

@@awake6009 think we would run out of doctors lol
Happy flights! ;-)
Be careful... or all of us in the US are going to come live in Europe. 😁

Anxiety is a serious thing. Your mother is a hero. She found herself in an abnormal, terrifying situation and she overcame her fear in order to save someone's life. That's incredible.

Copper Rabbit allergic reactions are extremely common and also extremely unaccounted for. Sometimes people don’t know their allergies, sometimes people don’t know what’s inside something. omg same with my indian mom
Mexican Mom?
True
& Indian mum😂😂😂😂😂
Get. An. EpiPen. On. Airplanes. As someone that relies on that to eat my meals without fear, I think it VERY necessary.
That's *nuts*
ME TOO
@@edew9180 the guy didn't even know he was allergic to red meat, it was a wild coincidence and series of events that led to his attack. I think it could be good to have an EpiPen on board. You can make the decision to not go to the Mexican restaurant
Also, can heartburn kill you? (That's not a sracastic question I really want to know)
E Dew if necessary, I would much rather use an expired epi pen and get sick than suffocate and die. Just because you’re ignorant, doesn’t mean you should share your opinion.
@@edew9180 But as you see in this example, not everyone knows about their allergies, so of course you should have an epipen with you, if you know that you are allergic to some foods, but the planes should definitely have one in their emergency kits too.
Flight attendant: Is there any physician
Dr Mike : Me!
Flight attendant (in her head):idk looks like a model to me eh why not
maybe they recognised him??
Lol
Alice 5 maybe
Dr. Mike: no shoes, hoodie, looks like hasn't slept for days.
Me: *whoops I guess I'm a doctor now*
lol same I wear a hoody all the time shoes rusting idk where and well ofc.. Sleep deprived.
bruh you have class 1-A to teach
@@yeboi1887 I teach while I sleep
I've always been a doctor. I now know my true purpose in life.
That’s me during Coronavirus! I’m doing homework while watching this video! (School is cancelled) 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
He makes medical information fun to watch, teaching us important things.
"Is there a doctor on board?"
Ross Geller: "I'm a doctor, where's the dinosaur?"
immmm dyyiiiinnggggggg
#underatted
Only the fandom will understand XD
"Ross please. This is a hospital. It actually means something here."
Coding With Bobby hey don’t die 🤠👍 *peaceful music*
Doctor Mike should start a petition to have epi pens on planes! Like if you’d sign it!
Sophie I agree I have a serious nut all to all nuts but I make sure to have a EpiPen on me at all time and a lot of people don’t know that u can tell a flight attendant and they will not serve nuts and they will let u on the plane first to go and wipe down your seat in case there nut dust on nuts on it or in your seat
Prices would go up. It would be great if they charged who ever used it like triple the amount of a regular one so they dont waste money and charge us extra
Agree. But how much additional fare will the airlines charge to their passenger for epi pens? Lol
Mai Howell I don’t think the prices would go up since they already have epinephrine just in a different source
When he started talking about the red meat and the tick I straight up felt like someone was summarizing an episode of House
Yeah well ticks are becoming a problem all over the world.. they're even creeping into Iceland where we don't even have mosquitoes or cockroaches.
MY IPHONE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS TICK, TICKS ARE LIKE MY #1 FEAR IN LIFE. I HATEEEEEE THEM. I WAS TELLING MY SISTER AB THIS TICK, AND SHE WAS ALL LIKE "WELL NO IT WONT BE A PROBLEM, BLAH BLAH." FUCK THIS COMES ON MY RECOMMENDED. HE WAS BIT BY IT, NOW HE'S ALLERGIC TO RED MEAT. I'M GIVING UP RED MEAT NEXT WEEK AND MOVING TO A FIELD WITH NO TALL GRASS...AHHH
Lol for real?! Never thought about ticks till now... honestly if one bites me and I get allergic reaction to red meat I wouldn’t even be mad 😂
@@Pri-ze7fv Did you know their bite can carry fatal diseases?
Stalin Of Rivia yeah, that part I knew (:
Incredible story. I like how Dr. Mike willingly discused that he was nervous and didn’t exactly know how to preform certain tasks. It takes a humble person to admit when they are at a loss or need additional advice and are a little scared.
Glad it all worked out in the end, you are a good man and a great doctor! ❤
