  • WATCH ME IN THE HOSPITAL (VLOG): • Day In The Life Of A D...
    Well, this flight was exciting, to say the least! Luckily it was a learning experience for both me and Matt! Whenever you have an airplane medical emergency doctors do have an ethical but no legal obligation to help. After this event, I thought it might be nice to do a dedicated video to Airplane Medical Emergencies and in general what is expected of doctors and passengers. If you're game for that please let me know in the comments!
    Thanks, Defranco for the shoutout! Check out his channel here: / philipdefranco
    Link to Daily Mail article: www.dailymail....
    If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in-depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Doctor Reacts Series & Responding to Comments so please submit more names of shows/episodes & questions you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

      I'm surprised this isn't the case since they already train them in CPR (or at least some airlines do, a friend of mine was a flight attendant and actually had to perform CPR on passengers twice).

    • @TheAsheTalketh
      @TheAsheTalketh 5 лет назад +13

      There is a worldwide shortage so our airline is only just getting them as we're incredibly low on the priority pile. Training isn't the problem as we get annual training and it's just added into our curriculum, we also get important updates which we have to read before we begin our duty and the epipen addition was one for us. It took 10 seconds to learn "blue to sky, orange to thigh".

    It's honestly crazy to me that people thanked you for not diverting the plane. I was on a plane one time where a guy had a stroke and the plane had to make an emergency landing and I was just glad that the guy was okay. Sure, it took longer for us to get to our destination, but that doesn't matter. When the guy walked off of the plane himself, everyone on the plane cheered for him.

      It is not necessary to know what the emergency is about!!! They did not divert the flight even when somebody was having anaphylaxis in the plane. So for me, if the plane needs to land somewhere between it means that we just saved a life!!! And even having the idea that somebody thanks you not diverting the plane feels crazy and super selfish. I had a scare when I started eating a heath bar and told my friends on vc it was crunchy. They joked about it having nuts which got me worried so I checked and yea, there were nuts. Luckily I only ate a small bit and was able to just take benadryl instead of my epipen but jesus was it scary to think “oh god im gonna have an allergic reaction”. That's so freaking cool and so necessary because doctors are humans too - they can't know everything! I have two extremely rare diseases and it's been the doctors who have attitudes like Dr. Mike that have really saved my life! Way to go Dr. Mike!

    My dad has been a general surgeon for 40+ years. I have been with him at least a dozen times in public places including planes when someone has announced over the loud speaker "Is there a doctor present?". 9 times out of 10 he'll give it a good minute to see if anyone else responds but inevitably he ends up helping. At 75 he is still practicing and we ask when he's going to retire. His answer has always been "When I can no longer help people."

    One of my brother's best friends had a medical emergency on a flight after "cold symptoms" suddenly turned much worse. Unfortunately, there was no one like Dr. Mike on board to help him and the pilots decided an emergency landing was not needed because he seemed stable enough to them. He wound up going into sepsis which could not be reversed in the hospital they finally sent him to upon finishing the flight. He lived long enough for his parents to see him, though he was not conscious, and then he died.
    He was in his early thirties, a beloved mathematics professor, his disabled brother's only friend, a gifted athlete, a wonderful friend, and the only one who could have given his parents grandchildren. He was one of the kindest and most brilliant people I have ever known. Friends, students and colleagues from around the world sent letters upon his death, which were compiled into a big binder and given to his parents at his funeral. He had such an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Along with him, the future he intended to give his parents of grandkids and a daughter-in-law to comfort and assist them in old age, of nephews and nieces to lift his brother's isolation, was also lost.
    His parents live in my neighborhood and all the places where their kids and my brother used to play, in the tree fort and basketball court they built, the sandpit with child-sized construction equipment, the garden, and so on, are all empty. The whimsical math toys he made for fun are unused. His brother doesn't come to visit anymore and his parents rarely go on the walks they used to take together every evening.
    The airline never gave them so much as an apology.

    I stumbled across your video today and couldn't believe the parallel to an experience i had with a passenger who had a severe peanut allergy. on a flight back from Melbourne Australia to SFO there was a cabin call for "doctor on board" in the early AM. I went through the same debate but ultimately volunteered and found the passenger with severe respiratory stridor at the back of plane in the galley, gasping; long story short, his epipen was in his checked luggage; O2 on and the cardiac needle was the only other option; ultimately a flight attendant carried one and saved the day...thanks for the effort to get these stocked - seems like a no brainer these days...i travel a lot and thought about just stocking one in my carry-on...life changer!

    Doctor Mike, I don't know which airline you traveled on, but in Europe practically all airlines have epipens on board, they are located in the first aid kit, and yes, the flight attendants are trained to know how to use them. They are also trained to identify different medical conditions, such as angina, heart attack, stroke, shock, and many others, as well as treat them within what is possible. Flight attendants also learn basic life support and how to use a defibrillator. They even need to know how to deliver a baby. In a medical emergency, the first step is to ask passengers if there is a medically qualified person on board. Usually there is a doctor, nurse or paramedic among the passengers, but if this does not happen, it is the flight attendants who provide help to the person. They are also responsible for deciding whether to make an emergency landing, passing this information on to the pilots. That's how things work at every airline I've worked for to date. Happy flights! ;-)

    i had this same allergy a few years ago.
    I remember that I would constantly and inexplicably get hives-usually on my head after I'd fallen asleep, waking me up in a fit of scratching. Eventually, I had a bad enough reaction (my back was pretty much a giant hive) that my parents decided to take me to an allergist. They did their bunch of tests, and that's when I discovered I had the allergy (along with a mild grass allergy). Funnily enough, I remember the exact tick that gave me the allergy: it dug its stupid little head into a not-so-pleasant location during a Boy Scout camping trip.
    After, like, two years I grew out of it.

    So incredible‼️‼️‼️ Just spending All that time and care for that patient/passenger is so giving and gracious of you. God bless, and it just shows such wonders when meeting someone that you didn’t realize would end up being someone you have a similarity/connection to. 🙏🏽
    The airlines really should have a medical staff person on all flights, even for pilots or flight assistants, but at the very least a stock of EpiPens!!!
    So incredible how extensive your knowledge is and how reasonably you explain your medical field, research, etc
    Thank God for doctors 🥼 like you! Saving lives everywhere you go, impressing your spirit and expertise on others, to breathe beauty, peace and life long moments of happiness.
    Thankfully, you didn’t have to do a Pulp Fiction cric❗️

    True story: this happened to my mom once on a flight and she had such severe social anxiety that when they asked if there was a doctor on board she was terrified to say yes. It took another announcement saying it was a serious matter before she stepped up and ultimately saved the person in first class from a heart attack.
    Note: she’s an anesthesiologist that focuses in open heart surgery. So she doesn’t interact with patients much and when she does it’s in small doses.

      Anxiety is a serious thing. Your mother is a hero. She found herself in an abnormal, terrifying situation and she overcame her fear in order to save someone's life. That's incredible.

      This is an absolute heart-warming story. Your mom took the obstacle in front of her and absolutely smashed it. Good for her for being able to get to rise to the occasion, many would have let their anxiety cripple them.

    Is there a medical professional on board? No not just an medical professional, it's Doctor freaking Mike.
    Also side note: How is it not required to have a normal epi pen on board. Had you not been there and somebody didn't know how to approach this, the situation could've turned out very bad. Good job sir👏

      L Fischer My old teacher had two kids who had allergies to something (one allergic to peanuts, another allergic to strawberries) the boy's peanut allergy wasn't really bad, so the doctors didn't give him an epi pen, but apparently the girl's strawberry allergy was bad so my teacher keeps her epi pen in the closet.

    • @cooper2469

      when i was in school we had to buy our own epi pens and give 1 to the nurse office and to 1 gym (since im allergic to latex and basket balls and such have latex) every year. note this is when epi pens where like $900 a pop! now they are so cheap at 500........

    • @ameliajane8355
      @ameliajane8355 5 лет назад +17

      Also epipens COST $500!!! Insurance pays for some/most of it but people who can’t afford health insurance or who have crappy coverage end up having to pay a lot and you have to replace them annually! It is not okay to call carrying an epipen personal responsibility and then make them so expensive to obtain

    • @chrisjohnston4488
      @chrisjohnston4488 5 лет назад +24

      Epipen's are only $123 using goodrx.com without health insurance. Not only should they carry it but that is less than one plane ticket per plane per year. Also they have to have health insurance making the price go down. Also I worked for a camp that go a discount for buying 5 a year so buying in bulk will make the price go down even farther. No excuses if they spit that cost between 50 people that would add less than $3 to each ticket for 1 flight a year. Also Epipen training could be done with CPR training in about 10 minutes and a practice Epipen is $20 .
