      I'm surprised this isn't the case since they already train them in CPR (or at least some airlines do, a friend of mine was a flight attendant and actually had to perform CPR on passengers twice).

    • @TheAsheTalketh
      @TheAsheTalketh 5 лет назад +11

      There is a worldwide shortage so our airline is only just getting them as we're incredibly low on the priority pile. Training isn't the problem as we get annual training and it's just added into our curriculum, we also get important updates which we have to read before we begin our duty and the epipen addition was one for us. It took 10 seconds to learn "blue to sky, orange to thigh".

      I had a scare when I started eating a heath bar and told my friends on vc it was crunchy. They joked about it having nuts which got me worried so I checked and yea, there were nuts. One of my brother's best friends had a medical emergency on a flight after "cold symptoms" suddenly turned much worse. Unfortunately, there was no one like Dr. Mike on board to help him and the pilots decided an emergency landing was not needed because he seemed stable enough to them. He wound up going into sepsis which could not be reversed in the hospital they finally sent him to upon finishing the flight. He lived long enough for his parents to see him, though he was not conscious, and then he died.
    He was in his early thirties, a beloved mathematics professor, his disabled brother's only friend, a gifted athlete, a wonderful friend, and the only one who could have given his parents grandchildren. He was one of the kindest and most brilliant people I have ever known. Friends, students and colleagues from around the world sent letters upon his death, which were compiled into a big binder and given to his parents at his funeral. He had such an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Along with him, the future he intended to give his parents of grandkids and a daughter-in-law to comfort and assist them in old age, of nephews and nieces to lift his brother's isolation, was also lost.
    His parents live in my neighborhood and all the places where their kids and my brother used to play, in the tree fort and basketball court they built, the sandpit with child-sized construction equipment, the garden, and so on, are all empty. The whimsical math toys he made for fun are unused. His brother doesn't come to visit anymore and his parents rarely go on the walks they used to take together every evening.
    The airline never gave them so much as an apology.

      Epipen's are only $123 using goodrx.com without health insurance. Not only should they carry it but that is less than one plane ticket per plane per year. Also they have to have health insurance making the price go down. Also I worked for a camp that go a discount for buying 5 a year so buying in bulk will make the price go down even farther. No excuses if they spit that cost between 50 people that would add less than $3 to each ticket for 1 flight a year. Also Epipen training could be done with CPR training in about 10 minutes and a practice Epipen is $20 .

    i had this same allergy a few years ago.
    I remember that I would constantly and inexplicably get hives-usually on my head after I'd fallen asleep, waking me up in a fit of scratching. Eventually, I had a bad enough reaction (my back was pretty much a giant hive) that my parents decided to take me to an allergist. They did their bunch of tests, and that's when I discovered I had the allergy (along with a mild grass allergy). Funnily enough, I remember the exact tick that gave me the allergy: it dug its stupid little head into a not-so-pleasant location during a Boy Scout camping trip.
    After, like, two years I grew out of it.

    Doctor Mike, I don't know which airline you traveled on, but in Europe practically all airlines have epipens on board, they are located in the first aid kit, and yes, the flight attendants are trained to know how to use them. They are also trained to identify different medical conditions, such as angina, heart attack, stroke, shock, and many others, as well as treat them within what is possible. Flight attendants also learn basic life support and how to use a defibrillator. They even need to know how to deliver a baby. In a medical emergency, the first step is to ask passengers if there is a medically qualified person on board. Usually there is a doctor, nurse or paramedic among the passengers, but if this does not happen, it is the flight attendants who provide help to the person. They are also responsible for deciding whether to make an emergency landing, passing this information on to the pilots. That's how things work at every airline I've worked for to date. Happy flights! ;-)

    My dad has been a general surgeon for 40+ years. I have been with him at least a dozen times in public places including planes when someone has announced over the loud speaker "Is there a doctor present?". 9 times out of 10 he'll give it a good minute to see if anyone else responds but inevitably he ends up helping. At 75 he is still practicing and we ask when he's going to retire. His answer has always been "When I can no longer help people."

She just had one with Lufthansa who according to her had a small hospital on board in terms of resources. So it you're going to have a medical emergency, do it on a Lufthansa flight xD

    Dear Dr. Mike, thank you for what you did for this person in trouble. I don't know if airlines will watch your video, but you have an important opportunity here. Please write a public letter to the airline CEO's recommending the Epi Pen (and/or encourage your viewers to do the write and call them too). Airlines will probably not take action just based on this video, as wonderful and impacting as it is. In any case, thank you for all you do!

    • @nalinea18
      @nalinea18 5 лет назад +14

      Nuestra Musica Latina Unfortunately, if watching Air Crash Investigation (known as Mayday in some countries) has taught me anything, it’s that most airlines only improve things *after* someone dies. Especially if the improvements cost money. There have been known design flaws in plane parts etc., and planes have only gotten retrofitted with redesigned parts after a fatal accident has caused public outrage.
      If anything, they’ll probably say: ”Well there was epinephrine and they were able to use it, so it’s fine the way it is.” Because someone who’s not a doctor might not understand how dangerous an accidental overdose of epinephrine would be and how much safer an epipen is to use when there is not a medical professional on board. Because there won’t always be.

    • @cellizondo

      @@nalinea18 You are right about the attitude of many of those companies. But, that doesn't mean we shouldn't even try. We can't just accept that they don't respond and move on. We must at least do what we can.

    Glad it all worked out in the end, you are a good man and a great doctor! ❤
