I associated this commercial with StarTropics so much, that when I finally did play the game, I took one look at Mike and asked, "Where's his glasses?"
lmao I played this game so much in my life and didn't realize until I moved to Australia and then came back to the US that I had been to its setting since the game takes place on the islands next to Australia.
Used to be the favourite game of this one for so many years. There was just something about it that hit close to appeal. Still is well-loved for the classic nostalgia. Seeing this ad from so long ago, the player in the commercial always seemed like an adult version of the game's protagonist Mike. Makes this one want to visit the southern tropics and party with the island natives in a conga line.

The desolate era of TV commercials from my childhood, where they put together visuals to sell the product, then steamrolled them with a script apparently made for radio instead
Thinking it's about time I pick this one up again for the first time in what feels like forever. It and Zoda's Revenge. But first...I'm gonna go grab my blue Hawaiian shirt to strap on before I press start. Not gonna put bananas in my ears like Mike Jones though. 🍌👂😎👂🍌 🦜🐬
I had this and I remember the game came with a letter from the protagonist's uncle. PLOT TWIST when you get to the submarine thing you have to wet the letter and it will reveal the code to start the sub.
Since the game's been released on the NES Classic Edition, Nintendo Switch Online service, and the Wii U Virtual Console - I wonder how the all-digital versions deal with the fact that you don't have the letter anymore. Edit: welp, I just ran into a Reddit thread where someone mentions this very thing, and apparently while the Wii U Virtual Console version includes an image of the letter - hidden text and all - in its digital manual, the version in the Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online application… has no such help, because the NES - NSO application lacks manuals, maps, and anything else extra that might've originally come with the NES games. :[
I mean worst case scenario you get it through trial and error. 1000 possible combinations. It's supposed purpose was to destroy Family Video rentals because you would have to return it before you've tried them all. Genius yet sadistic.
Wow, this commercial sucked! It would have made me stay away from the game. Good thing my brother bought the game. Definitely didn’t do it any justice.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought that. The player in the commercial would be an ideal grown-up Mike. 🙂

THESE were the days!!!!!!!!. One of my all-time favorites.
This is the most 90's / 80's thing ever and you know what I'm here for it.
Awesome, I remember this commercial! Specifically the Hawaiian shirt.

Even after more than 20 years I still recall this commercial, especially the "cruising inside a whale -- WHOA!!!" part.
I loved this game one of my favorites but i never saw the commercial till now!

My left ear loved this!
Those dancing trees I'll always remember.
thanks, man. ive been looking for that commercial for years.
My 2 favorite parts are the chief saying "Mele Kalikimaka" and the end where the song is singing "what cha doin'? what's the matter wit cha?" lol
I remember that commercial I was 10 years old back in 1991😊
Now, I've never played this game (though I played it's sequal), but I do remember this commercial.
First game I ever yelled at and said it cheated lol.

That one room with the full body of deep water, was the worst trolling from the devs. Someone must have been pissed that day that room was created...
Love this game
This is the most 80s commercial for the most 80s game ever made
Never played the game but i remember the commercial :)

Not a problem, @@KizulEmeraldfire. It's 747 MHz.

@@shutterbug_713 Easiest way is to remember the popular model of plane from Boeing 747 and the other code is the U.S year of indpendence 1776.
The chief at 0:09 sounds like he’s speaking Filipino!
He says "Mele Kalikimaka" which is a christmas song, lol.
