I remember meeting you and having a smoke with you in Chatham at Twisters. It was great. I heard Red and White the day after you wrote it. And Now I am married to a soldier and it hits home even more.
I have only in my life ever encountered 2 songs that could bring a tear to my eye. this one and red and white. both by julian. having served in the forces for a number of years and having a close friend's name mentioned in red and white (jamie murphy heart felt condolonces to his family and friends) every memeber of the military in canada thanks you julian that's 50 thousand thank you's from every reserve and reg force member also the veterans who've served in the past. we thank you.
I was on tour when Jamie passed. I didn't get a chance to know him, but from what I've heard through the grapevine was that he was a great kid. Dedicated and motivated. He will always be remembered as a hero, you can at least take some solace in that I suppose. I understand words are cheap, but if they're meant from a place of love and are heartfelt, take some semblance of happiness from that to try to temper your grief ever so slightly.
I remember a dude once told me straight to my face Canada would be easy to beat. I replied that the Germans, Italians, Koreans, Americans and the Taliban thought the same thing, ask them how it turned out
JROY Technically We were not a Country during The War Of 1812-14 We were a British Colony but you are correct we kicked their Ass with our existing military and a lot of help from Aboriginals like John Norton and Tecumseh who have never got the Proper Credit they deserve. The Wars Our Forces served in we Kicked a lot of Ass especially on D Day!
It never cease's to amaze me how little the younger generations truly know about Canada and I for one am thankful that Julian put this song on the air. Raised by a Pat I can understand and respect all of it. I hope only to one day, soon, follow those steps and leave my own. Thank you Julian for making the song and THANK YOU to all troops serving to keep me, mine and everyone else free... Eternal gratitude is extended to you for your loses and pain. From the heart... THANK YOU!
Well,,after reading all these comments,, I only have ONE THING TO SAY !!! AS A SERVING MEDICAL PERSON WITH N.A.T.O. NONE BETTER ,THAN ALL THAT SERVE !!! DO NOT TRY TO TAKE THAT AWAY !! CANADIANS ,,AMERICANS ,,& ALL N.A.T.O. PERSONELL ...WE DO STAND SIDE BY SIDE !!!
From all I hear about Canada and how nice they are, it's hard to believe they have a brilliant army behind them! I'm from England and hear a lot about Canada and it's all nice things. Not tainted by war, scandals and damn right awful people. I salute you Canada, stay awesome!
It is nice to hear people talk about us Canadians that way, thank you. The truth is we are an easy going people but if it comes down to having to fight we will do everything in our power to make it end quickly. We have taken part in many conflicts and wars we just choose to not advertise it. i like to think of us as the big brother, we may not say much but we'll help you when your down.
Well I'm glad that there are still some good willed people in this world that are there to help others and not just themselves! Beautiful country with great people. There's no other way to describe Canada in my opinion :')
this shows what Canadians do how no other country can compare to CANADA i served for 7 years i was in the 48th north nova scotia highlanders and this song makes me cry all the time
My God this song gives me chills. A salute to all Canadians who have served, from New France to the present day, and to those you have goven the ultimate sacrifice you'll never be forgotten. And elite reputation well-earned. And a shout-out to our allies as well around the world. Together we stand.
@lauraowen4 Remember: Vimy Ridge took great preparation. Months of planning, scale models, precision in movement to take that ridge. British High Command forgot that when sending our boys to slaughter in Dieppe
I love this song. If you go to Julian Austins website, and download this song all proceeds go to the Wounded Soldier Fund. Generous man towards a very important organization!
Julian, thank you for the song, your an amazing artist, your support of our troops speaks worlds of your moral fiber. I'm proud to serve a country with men as pure of heart as yourself, and of course Dave! Dave thank you for posting this, and for everything you do!
Actually the American ammo did help... Their .50 cal ammo can go further because it is more arrow dynamic. That and heating up the bullets helped too as they do add distance on the shot.
@RazorCell7 Robert Furlong did use American ammunition to get the kill. He states it in his interview. Its the man not the bullet who gets the credit though.
I think you are absolutely right....He got the kill...because he wanted it! There are so many hunters and fishers in Canada...they make purely great soldiers. If we have to fight a war in a warm land....that is a blessing!
and that sniper's first shot took out a moving truck at 2400 meters then a miss fine he's 2 and a half klicks away then he took out the driver of said truck. i got to meet the guy and we had to prod him quite a bit but he finally broke down and told us about it. poor guy has to live with that shit that can't be easy.
I never said the Americans had something to do with his kill. The American issue .50cal ammo helped a tad. Even Rob Furlong in his interview said that it helped a bit as their ammo can go further than the Canadian issued ammo.
@RazorCell7 Sorry it took so long to respond. Being a patriotic Canadian, any opinions of mine are probably biased. I would however, state that Robert Furlong still would have gotten the kill. I'm no ballistics expert and i'm not even out of high school yet so my personal opinions really can't be used to determine if it is possible that he would have got the kill with Canadian ammunition or any other ammunition but as I said above, I think he would have gotten the kill regardless of ammo origin.
its Ironic... we are a peace loving country and hate wars, mean while we out preform every other country who we go to war with. Got the farthest on D-day, one Canadian liberates an entire city, and we took longest sniper kill record (nice shot Furlong, and yes im aware that a british sniper now holds the record but we took 3 shots and they took 9 ! :3) Don't underestimate us. Were small but we are very highly trained.
Okay, I do think you do need to go back and watch the interview. He did have Canadian ammo but ran out and used American ammo he got from Americans on the field because he had no more Canadian. He took the shot with American ammo which their .50 cal round is different from ours and is more arrow dynamic. I'm not talking out of my ass, I'm talking with the brain I have.

It brings tears to my eyes, everything my ancestors gave to keep this country now it gets sold of to foreigners. All thrown away. Every other country is allowed to keep their culture and ways but Canada is the worlds doormat. I've had enough, we've become weak and pathetic!
I would disagree, both economically and culturally. We've never been a British or French identity, always Canadian, be it British or French Canadian. When immigrants come to canada they follow our laws and rules to an extent and are allowed and only allowed to follow their own practices if it keeps out of the way of Canadian practices.
As an American...I can say...no better Friends, no worse enemies then Canadians
I raise my glass to all the members of the Canadian Forces!
Sorry...i don't care what anyone else says....this song is the single greatest song to ever exist in the world..........this is my anthem

As George Orwell pointed out, people sleep peacefully in their
beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their
behalf.

Beaumont Hammel. A generation of Newfoundlanders lost on the first day of combat.

Canada - Warrior-like her people are not by choice, though fierce warriors her people have been required on occasion to be.

Rob Furlong used to be married to my cousin. I was at the wedding.
