    And another detail that English version is missing is the movie’s name. Original Chinese name of the film is actually translated as “Hi, Li Huanying”. Li Huanying is the name of Jia Ling’s mom. According to Jia Ling, her mom is herself before becoming a mom. When woman becomes a mom, people always forget their mother was once a young girl too.

    • @HY31494
      @HY31494 2 года назад +12

      The movie's name is perfect for marketing, it's a perfect title, if you put Hi, Li Huanying, it doesn't tell you much about the movie, and it became too personal. When the title is Hi, mom, it immediately resonate with everyone and makes it more attractive and memorable to foreign viewers. I haven't seen this film, but I already knew this is a real Chinese film that the Chinese can be proud of, it's not garbage imitation film that boast their big budget and fake art, this film is a true art from China because I've seen many older Chinese films that is distinctively Chinese.

    I think that with the (relative) fading of the massive cultural influence of the US, a lot of nations who had previously been completely sold on the "foreign is better" idea are rediscovering themselves. I can definitely see it in France where I'm from. You wouldn't believe how common it was (and still is) to make fun of stuff just for being french, with a negative "hillbilly" and low-quality connotation.

    In a similar vein, “The Making of an Ordinary Woman” (俗女養成記) in Taiwan has proven to be a popular show, with a high class Taipei business woman returning to her slow life living with her parents in Tainan, and reflecting on her childhood. Happiness living with her family and make her own way really resonated with a lot of young people, and there is more and more of these kinds of shows and movies coming out in Taiwan: reminiscent of the 60s/70s/80s. Even though Taiwan was still under strict martial law at those times, that’s never the focus because people don’t want to remember that they want to remember the happiness of their parents’ youth and the candy their grandparents gave them when they went to visit… There’s a slow shift towards these things globally I think; people are keen for time and close relationships

      @@flamefang I wouldn't describe it as an obsession. I would argue that to the extent Americans can appreciate other cultures, it's to the general extent that those items of appreciation are surface-level expressions of that respective culture. Easily digestible, not too much brain-power required to consume. Food, entertainment (anime, songs), aesthetics (architecture, getting Chinese/Japanese tattoos), etc.
      I think foreign cultures in America are treated like artifacts in a museum. Something people take out to admire and "ooh" and "aah" at for a little bit, then it gets locked behind a vault to be taken out again when people feel like doing so. And that's just cultural exports. Nothing needs to be said about how the actual PEOPLE and VALUES from those cultures are treated in America ("Go back to your country, we don't want you here").

    I left China in the mid 80s at an early age. I have some limited memories and know that China has completely transformed in the ensuing years and there's nothing left of what I know. This film looks to hit a nostalgic note with me too. I am guessing the final act would resolve the issue of the "time travel" ban in Chinese films?

    • @AccentedCinema
      @AccentedCinema  2 года назад +156

      Surprisingly it did not. If anything the mystery of the time travel only gets more complex and intriguing at the end.
      If I have to guess the reason: a few years ago, the film bureau became its own government entity, independent from the Radio and Television Administration that issued most of the infamous media bans.
      In other words, I'm guessing the time travel ban no longer applies to motion pictures. But that's just my guess.

    One thing you said that really struck me, was the internal racism that Chinese people had/have towards themselves. I was born and raised in a Western country, so I only thought my internalised racism was because of the bullying and the environment in which I grew up. I really hope what you said is true, that the Chinese people (especially the millennials) are beginning to embrace their culture and history with pride now. I think this pride will radiate and spread across the world so that all the people of Chinese ethnicity can fully embrace their heritage and not try to push it away or mould themselves into a "white" person.

      As a Canadian-born-Chinese, I feel you! Being Chinese in the west kind of sucks since sinophobia is currently so rampant and in the past China was considered dirty and poor, so I’ve definitely dealt with my fair share of being shamed just for being Chinese.
      But I can guarantee that Chinese people are definitely becoming more and more proud of their traditional culture and history. It probably helps that China is now in a more stable position, rather than the tumultuous period of the 20th century that forced China to modernize to avoid the threats of war and colonization.
      That being said, stuff like hanfu and gufeng are more popular than ever! You can see youths in the streets wearing hanfu and there are more and more hanfu brands than ever, and lots of music use traditional Chinese elements.
      The media industry is growing too, and besides cpop, there’s also cdramas and donghua and manhua-all of which that’s been growing more popular. It’s honestly quite exciting.
      And as this video shows, channels like Li Ziqi and Dianxi Xiaoge are celebrated, even though they show off rural life-lifestyles that people would previously scoff at _because_ it’s rural. More people now are thus proud of all aspects of Chinese history and culture, which is really nice.
      It’s served as a great source of comfort for me, and I hope it serves as comfort for you as well. And I definitely recommend checking out more Chinese media! It’s always fun and exciting seeing what’s come out of China recently.

    My condolences to you for your passing of your grandpa, I hope you were able to still find a way to pray for his safe passage through his afterlife. I too had a passing of my grandfather a few months back, but through the influence of my dad's family circle and him being the eldest, they were able to delay for quarantine (21 days) and through a massive flight catastrophe and luck of not having borders closed until after my arrival till end of CNY, I landed safely and had a proper procedure. I never thought I'd cry but even in writing this message, I feel the sadness and hope you can have a way to find closure with your grandpa. Thank you for sharing another great video on a retro Chinese film.

    watched the movie few month ago, and it's indeed one of the best movie of 2021! very funny, touching and if i'm not mistaken Rare to see Chinese movie with time travel theme and this is my favorite theme (back to the future fan here ^^).
    As foreigner living in China, the movie is, to my eye, international. I heard she wanted to release the movie overseas but some Chinese outlets said foreigners might not understand the movie, so it will be hard to sell it.
    i will say GO FOR IT!!! The movie is totally for everybody and not just for Chinese audiences^^ , if one day the movie got a release out of China, you guys should go watch it on big screen ^^

    I watched this movie on the plane back home (one of) after a month of visiting my boyfriend in the US. It made me miss my mom a lot, especially since I feel like she'd really love this movie. She lost her mom some few years back, my granny had a lot of health issues and ended up passing away near Passover, and I still remember her telling me the news and telling me to remember my grandma not as her in pain at the hospital, but her small habits. The movie as a whole made me really emotional because of that alone

    Beautiful video Accented Cinema!! My condolences to you and your family. I am born in 1997 and my mother was born into a famished but later economically reformed China as well. I really do resonate with your thesis in the second half of the video, and I think your sentiment is accurate. Chinese millennials are the first generation to feel the ill effects of capitalism on such a spiritual level, and I am afraid we do not know quite how to articulate it ourselves. To lend more analysis to your anecdotal feelings Ive found marxist theory quite useful!

    • @WalkingSideways
      @WalkingSideways 2 года назад +3

      I think this is a subtle but profound realisation. Capitalist modernity isn't what it's made out to be - Utopia. Marxist and Maoist theory is a helpful critique of this, but I would also suggest Coloniality/Decoloniality theory. Ramon Grosfoguel is a great thinker on these issues. Instead of an alternative modernity - as China seems to be doing, can we transcend modernity and reconstitute what was lost in pursuit of modernity? In the West, as the film conveys, we have indeed lost 'time' for each other, for our families, our communities (we don't even have those anymore!). What is a society without sociability, conviviality, reciprocity, when the sole goal in life is to partake in money exchange to satisfy a never ending need for meaningless material stuff?
      That was a bit of a ramble, but great points!

    This nostalgia phenomenon in Mainland China can be closely compared with S. Korea's recent surge in interest regarding cultural and societal artifacts of the 1980s-1990s. This trend is now being called "newtro" in Korea and its influence can be seen everywhere from clothing trends, music, and even the massive wave of young Koreans gutting out formerly abandoned and worn-down industrial and residential areas of Seoul and turning them into trendy clothing boutiques, restaurants, cafes.
    A paper I read for a Korean film class several semesters back coined the term "compressed modernity." Essentially, the gist is, since s. Korea experienced societal transformation post-Korean war at such a breakneck speed (essentially, s. Korea underwent a societal change which Western European countries underwent in two to three centuries within a matter of 40-50 years), modernity and generational memories have been "compressed." For instance, my parents, born in the late 1950s (post-war Korea) and early 1960s (early Yusin regime Korea) in Korea, have wildly different life experiences than Koreans born just 5-10 years after them shaped by vastly differing cultural circumstances, national landscapes, and material conditions. For instance, my father (born three years after the armistice of the Korean War) remembers spending the earlier days of his childhood living in a Choga-jip (thatch roof Korean traditional home). Whereas my mother, who was born in the early 1960s, grew up in a suburban-style concrete semi-basement (think of the one from Parasite). What makes this difference even more shocking is that both of my parents were born in Seoul.
    Hence, film and media as well as other cultural mediums are ways in which not only the older generation can essentially "decompress modernity" and their memories but it also acts as a means for the younger generation to connect and reimagine a world so incredibly foreign to them despite just being a few decades distant. Comparable to "Hi Mom" in terms of cultural impact is Korea's "Reply 1988" series (2015) which recounts the heartwarming neighborhood stories of a group of childhood friends growing up during the post-democratization s. Korea. Its color palette, like "Hi Mom", is bright and warm, and it conjures a deep sense of longing for a simpler time in a society still held together by tightly-knit social networks and a society filled with general kindness and trust for one another. These depictions are rather interesting given the actual state of Korea during this time (immense military government repression with Korea only becoming a pseudo-democracy in 1987). Depictions of this era prior to this trend would have been similar to Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder which utilizes a drab gray palette depicting a repressed and chaotic society ruled by a militarized government whose only means of politics were force and violence.
    Therefore, it's reasonable to see such trends arising in China given that the transformation which the country has undergone even in the last 30 years is incomparable to Korea's (incomparable by anything else in human history for that matter). At the same time, it's great to see that Chinese youth are now reinterpreting history and their national past as a means of recollecting and rebuilding national pride and identity.

    A very good recap and commentary. One correction about the comparison between this movie and Zhang Yimou's movie about the 70s. 70s was a dark age, while 80s was a time of openness and optimism due to Deng's new policies.
