    the reason why Minecraft is such a great game is because of how unique it is. It is not a first person shooter or a driving game. It enabled creativity for people to basically do anything they wanted.

    • @asterling4
      @asterling4 Год назад +4

      you're talking about minecraft as a software, not minecraft as a game. it's not special because it's unique as a game. it's special because it is a very powerful software that players build on top of. things like SMPs and crazy redstone contraptions and bedwars and skyblock can be constructed on top of minecraft because of its viability as a software. that's like saying legos are a really unique game - they're not, they're not a game at all, but they ARE excellent building blocks for games.
      the thing you're trying to identify is its orthogonality. think about the core gameplay loop: break the world, collect the drops, craft new things, put the crafted blocks back in the world. the rules are simple, limited, and they _always apply._ everything can be broken. everything drops something. all of those drops can be crafted into something else.
      there are exceptions, of course, but the important thing is that gameplay arises from the rule, not from handcrafted exceptions. compare with other games which are very limited so that you can only do what the game "wants" you to do - there is no orthogonal, systemic rule with meaningful applications to every imaginable situation.
      that orthogonality is why people call it timeless, and what gives minecraft its depth. minecraft as a game is very bland. combat is easy, survival is trivial, gathering resources is a grind. that depth and potential that you're talking about? that's the _engine_ of the game. the exceptionally accessible and orthogonal software that everyone builds on. that's the special bit.

    if Java were ignored, modders would basically take it over, virtually recreating every update that comes out on bedrock, but actually making it better, also microsoft would never ditch java, it's basically an advertisement campaign, it's what the vast majority of creators post on, and as such getting rid of that will basically ditch all of minecraft advertisement.

    I think it's important to note that the java abandonment theory has no confirmation from any official source or any past occurrence that hints mojang would do this, as far as the latest update is concerned mojang still develops both versions equally. It's just nothing more than a fan theory because it feels like it makes more sense in a player perspective: if the game is suffering from dual development, just delete the version with less players. But this doesn't make sense in a business perspective. A lot of the game's advertising and longevity stems from the culture being formed around it through player made custom maps, mods, smps, mini games, and youtube content... All of which use Java for its flexibility and freedom. Bedrock may be necessary for more players to access the game in any and all platforms and devices, but java still has the heart and soul of the game.

    • @Topunito
      @Topunito Год назад +22

      That last sentence, that's it. Java is everything that has to do with the game's cultural impact. The most iconic servers, mods, etc.
      Tbf, I don't exactly think it's impossible for Microsoft to not care about any of that, but the "less players, less monetization and makes development harder means they're automatically gonna discontinue it" mentality ignores the value Java has beyond that.

    • @SnrubSource
      @SnrubSource Год назад +12

    • @charlestonianbuilder344
      @charlestonianbuilder344 Год назад +9

      @@SnrubSource the main problem with that is that they cant make a fully 1:1 version of java, you cannot fully replicate all the quirks, things like bugs which became features like integral redstone mechanics, tnt duping and anything the technical community comes up with cannot be replicated onto bedrock, mojang tries their best, but its like translating words from one language to another, there will be words for things that the other language doesnt have words for to properly explain and communicate and vice versa. both are unique in many ways, and you cant just stop people from speaking a language either.

    • @cericat

    I have several thoughts regarding many of your points.
    First, i think the real reason 2 years had past was because they needed to discuss, coordinate, and work with Mojang with their goals and direction. They needed to figure out a plan of attack with code and limitations. The red tape of acquisition and direction takes time and so i think they started working on almost everything that was coming out long before so they can figure out what to release when to make the best sense. Look at how long games take to develop and they are pumping out new updates quite rapidly. These updates are also quite large in scope so that was probably a good thing they took some time to sit back and make a plan of attack at their new product.
    Second, eventually Java will stop receiving updates. Java inherently is not great for performance since is almost exclusively uses cpu and ram. This bottlenecks how much you can actually perform (though modders have done things to improve this) and as you said it is also the best for creative expression as it is easier to work with for the community at large. Bedrock is now to perform FAR better, but the modding community suffers and it has many bugs i keep hearing about which java rarely does. I said years ago, before the acquisition, that it would be better to go away from java and use a tool, very similar to how Bethesda provides the tools for modding, that facilitates the community to mod minecraft. There is still a problem with that though. As java stands now it can almost be modded down to some of the underlining workings of the game. People have even undone the combat changes, or many many things. The updates to minecraft add many good things, but what they add is nothing the modding community cannot do (with not as clean work) given some time. As others have stated once they do stop supporting java (it is inevitable that it will) the modding community will just replicate the updates from bedrock edition. In the end, as some others have said, minecraft is digital legos. All the pieces are there to allow for creativity in interesting ways, the community makes this game keep going. The game itself is very simple, but the community coming up with mods, different challenges, restrictions, or other such things actually keep it alive and fresh. What mojang does is less than what the community does for the life of the game. People play older editions for mods and specific things not yet introduced, or removed. Hell, i have played on 1.16 and much of the things in newer editions was made available in 1.16 just because of modding.

    Hytale shows a lot of promise, but it feels like it will never release. Like, ever.
    But, looking at their blog, it does seem they are still working on it. I believe that once it realeases, even if it takes another 5 years, it will absolutely detonate in popularity.
    that being said, at least early on. people liked Minecraft's simplicity and janky blocky nature. Hytale almost seems TOO polished and great. But time will tell if it succeeds.
    Side note, being written in C++ really has no effect on performance in the long run. With mods, Java edition can completely blow Bedrock Edition out of the water in terms of performance. It all depends on how much effort the team puts into optimizing the game.
    In fact, using Java might be a reason the game succeeded; Java applications are extremely easy to beak apart and modify - They didn't even need an official modding API, because the programming language itself allows for moding by default. Compare to C++ where modding without an official API is basically impossible.

    An interresting fact is that minecraft java edition even if has a lower performance with huge fps spikes, most of its problems can be solved by mods like sodium, lithium, iris shaders and some resources packs (capable even of rezolving bugs), giving rock solid performance and also increasing fps by big amount and I find it incredible. Also these solution are implemented by using api's, like forge or fabric, and not by directly modifying minecraft's code (which would give more power), and out there, there are lots of optimitation mods that make the game more lighter, more performant and enjoyable. Even if C++ would be a better programming language for mc, java still has a lot of potential for optimization, and our Modder community proved it to us. So I think Microsoft and Mojang should take inspiration from our community that loves so much that game and do these improvements.

    Some informations here might be already a bit outdated. The Minecraft platforms were already combined years ago via community mods.
    Java Minecraft servers can by joined by consoles and mobile phones via the Geyser plugin/proxy, which just translates the data packets.
    Also there are many pros of also having a Java version:
    - It's the only one running on MacOS and Linux. Scrapping it would mean loosing support for these platforms.
    - Even if stuff is written in 2 languages, the algorithms for the world generator etc. only need to be developed once and can be used by both teams. So the additional costs might be moderate.
    - It also has advantages to diversify. The overall brand will be more resilient and doesn't depend on a single technology.
    - Using different technologies allows to use the advantages of both for different audiences.
    - Java is much more suited for server programming than C++.
    - Java Is only maybe 10-20% slower than C++. Not 100-200%. And in some scenarios faster. Proper algorithms can be used to fix performance issues.
    - Tons of mods and plugins have been written in Java. It's the engine where most of the community and server development takes place.
    - Even if Mojang would decide to discontinue the Java version, the community probably won't.
    - The consequences and damage for the brand wouldn't be predictable when scrapping it. Eventually having the community even split up more than before.
    This in a sum doesn't look like support for the Java Edition would end soon.
    Rather it would be possible to have a shift to a combination of C++ clients (which typically run faster on GPUs)
    and Java servers (which typically are better with complex CPU-bound logic and networking).
    Also, Simon is not working on Hytale anymore. Core of the Hypixel staff were Java Developers, not C++ developers.
    When Hytale was sold, the original C#/Java edition was scrapped. They then hired many new C++ developers, visible in job announcements.
    By that you can assume that the original Hypixel team isn't involved anymore.
    So the game here to come won't have all the previously announced features anymore and will very likely be a totally different one.

Now you get, total "full" freedom. Minecraft is more than a game, it's a game engine itself that happens to be playable by default.

      Minecraft and Terraria released pretty close in time to each other and Terraria is very much its own thing anyways. The comparisons between the two games were always quite superficial and they weren't ever really competing with each other that much. Terraria just took inspiration from a few basic ideas from Minecraft but it plays VERY differently. Minecraft didn't have much to lose from promoting Terraria and rejecting the (at the time) widespread idea that it's just a cheap Minecraft copy. Same for Terraria.
      Meanwhile, Hytale is basically Minecraft+. It's trying to be a straight upgrade. I do not see Minecraft promoting Hytale, that would be like suicide, the two games will be fiercely competing with each other.

    Minecraft has all the things you need( mostly ) .personally , i love to be in village and protect the f**ckingly stupid villagers , ( whom i feel alone without) , pet cats , tame wolfs ,and the best companions of me are the persons who brought me to this game , whit whom i took my baby steps in this game , with their hepl i got my roots deep in this game .
    We started multiplayer, and till this day , as an introvert , i still mess the charm it has with my brothers , .
    We are five brothers , we started thi game 3 to 4 years ago , and till this date , we're playing it .
    After all , I love this game more than any game I've ever palyed .
    This was my story if this game ever dies ( praying that this won't happen ) .

    People keep bringing up TF2, which has a community so dedicated, that through 5 years of ZERO major updates, the game is still incredibly popular. Minecraft is an even bigger game. Unless Microsoft seriously does something awful to it, it won't die. It can't die.
    Throwing in my two cents, I started playing this game in 2011 when I was 5. Although I have grown up now and am almost a legal adult, I still play this game every single day. I took breaks sometimes, but in the end I would always come back for more. I know I'm not the only one who feels *this* connected to the game. Realistically, if Microsoft *did* do something that killed the game, I might honestly keep playing older versions for the nostalgia alone.

    The main issue with hytale is the development progress, the initial trailer is now 4 and a half years old, and they've delayed the game for the foreseeable future "2024" but they said the same thing "2023" back in 2022 when they delayed it the first time. Hytale will either flop or overtake minecraft instantly because of what the development team has been doing.

      I don't think they've even said 2024 lol, I think last I heard from them they've straight up admitted they have zero idea when the game will release. It might release 5 years from now, who knows.
      I mean, it doesn't matter either way. The only period where development time would've mattered was the initial hype period after the trailer, and they've missed that already so they can take as long as they want. Beyond that, for their success it doesn't really matter if it releases tomorrow or in 5 years. Either way the only following it has is dedicated fans, the hype for everyone else died down a long time ago.

    As nice as Hytale looks, the difference is high pixel count to Minecraft's more retro low pixel count.
    Hytale to me is not giving off the retro 8-bit vibe of Minecraft, but it is giving off the kinda MMORPG style vibe similar to games like Warcraft and Runescape, but with the added feature of being a sandbox.
    Hytale will gain a great audience, but to call it the next Minecraft, is like saying the Nintendo Switch is the new Game Boy.
    Also the issue with Java is an issue with Java script itself, Im not sure the company that makes the program for Java but they may be limiting the programs capability which then dominos down to Mojang having to work with Java's strength and weaknesses.

    I have high hopes that Hytale will be the better game, but even still, it's not clear if it can *kill* Minecraft. Though I'm actually not sure if MC has achieved such a cultural status that it can even survive when a game that does everything it does but better comes out. I think it's possible that its playerbase drops to a fraction of what it used to be if Hytale turns out to be better, but another possibility is that Minecraft will fight back and try harder than ever to deliver amazing content to compete with Hytale. That would be a win-win scenario tbh, maybe this current lack of competition is the reason Minecraft's content has felt lacking for a while, and some competition will give it motivation to be better.
    Either way one thing we should never doubt is that it will absolutely be remembered. Nobody's going to forget Minecraft's existence anytime soon. And also I doubt Hytale will achieve the same level of nostalgic magic that Minecraft did (especially with its C418 soundtrack), so that's one thing Minecraft will always have value for.

      You typically cant easily fabricate information (through means the devs are going "LALALALALAA THAT ISNT REAL THERE IS NO EXPLOIT!!!" at as we speak) in those games, and it typically DOES NOT apply to stuff like LAN servers or singleplayer.
      Which is where most bans come from (LAN, Private Realms servers, and generally small personal servers), hell, in a few cases you dont even need to be REPORTED to get banned.

    Minecraft in its golden age was no doubt a masterpiece. Its one of those things that I will 100% admit it should have ended when it did, but considering how big it was, there was no reason to stop. The Nether Update was REALLY needed, and I loved it. The Caves and Cliffs was cool, but the "Wild" Update was where it kind of felt like there wasn't enough to consider it being called that.
    Should Minecraft have ended when it did? Sure
    Is it still good? Pretty much
    Is it as good as it was in its golden years? No
    Could it be worse? Yes
