This was literally taking place outside of my office window. Occupy Wall Street spontaneous march through downtown NYC. No permits or permissions. The police were respectful, more so than they needed to be. The protesters made a lot of noise, both literally and figuratively. This took place Wed October 26, 2011.
This is what the news should be like. Completely non-opinionated and fully documented.
+Mack Pairan That's what I like about the BBC news and PBS. They're not trying to sell commercials so they're more rational-presenting.
+Mack Pairan indeed
Yeah 5 minutes long and no information about who, when. why. what.
Who = the people, When = Wed October 26th 2011, what = a protest against police brutality, why = to stop police brutality
It's quite too obvious, isn't it?
A year later you realise how biased Casey is.
that's how a news report should be
Welcome to Neistat News
Would be nice to have a little bit of background, not having seen this at the time and watching this 5 years later I had no idea what it was about. Only by reading the description I found out it was Occupy WS. Yet I still have no idea of the motives of the people walking in the protest. He asked nobody questions about why/what they were protesting.
But this all might be because it's assumed I already know these things from watching the news. (Or following the NYC scene in Oct 2011.)
that was actually the first BEME news video!
I really liked this video, because of how unbiased it is. You didn't try to make the the cops or the protestors look bad, you just showed it how it was. News channels should take a page out of your book and try it sometime.
It is easier for news groups to target 1 aide rather then both; for views
Very unbiased labeling them as a mob throughout the video implying they were seeking some sort of justice through the use of force and violence , praising the police for being "more respectful than they should be" (what exactly does that mean? How respectful should they have been?).
Alex Chew
Look up the definition for the word “mob.” Its use was completely accurate. And as far as the police showing the protesters respect, yes, they definitely did considering the fact that the protesters were in violation of the law by walking down the middle of the streets and blocking vehicular traffic. The police were quite lenient.
super8films66 but hey won’t
Eh he kind of glossed over the rioting part where they were knocking over trash cans and throwing things into the street
I like how he casually says : "i was chased by a cop with a baton"
Ikr lol
Lol
Elliot Mermet I would make a bigger deal about that lol
Casey always has the best vlogs, but it's always the "... by Casey Neistat" videos that I long for.
Bohunk Funk same

Protesting against police brutality
Causes police brutality
Ugh
Irony
+Turmanation5
no irony if your a cop.
They have rules against hiring anyone of above average IQ they want you only if your smart enough to follow orders but not so smart that you would question orders or to see error in procedure or policies.
That's half the point, it makes the police look bad if they are using force on a crowd protesting police brutality.
If it's peaceful protest it shouldn't do which is the entire point of the protest to begin with.
+likeOMGitzNICH! Bullshit. Brutality among protesters against brutality was obvious. When a Policeman is calling you and you try to escape - it is a violation, when you cry out loud in from of somebodys home at night - it is violation. There are no bad or good thing in life, but there is the relation and the law.
RUclips recommendations clearly have a sense of irony...
2:01 when you got a protest at 10 but gotta fight the civil war at 11
Yes.
That was a marine corp dress uniform.
I get your joke but it wasn’t a civil war uniform it’s marine corps
2020: Here we go again
Edit: Thank you for so many likes!
you got literally 26 likes
My like is the 69 like ;)
You know its going to be good when it says "...by Casey Neistat".
I like how Casey isn't biast
Nobody going to mention it's spelt biased?
You might. Because you are anknoening
+John Patti haha niec one
John Patti you are a horrible speller
keith perkins Ja,thei r.
Anyone else here while protests about George Floyd are happening?
Seeing this in 2016: That one cop is a hero. That could have been really, really bad. Good work photojournalist Casey.
@depro9
mob (mb) n.
1. A large disorderly crowd or throng.
2. The mass of common people
CaseyNeistat
Oh hi Casey!
Lol
1:42 hahaaaha she doesnt have a clue why r they protesting lol
LOL
Yeah, like most protesters around the world...
Sooty Rabbit not really most protesters know why they are why they are protesting
egomz123 Sad to tell you that ain’t the case. Guess the rich don’t know that.
Among many others, this is the kind of content that CNN admired in Casey, which is why they bought out Beme and brought him on board. I can't wait to see what Casey and his team will come up with.
lol sad
DiscoverWithDima Oh the irony
Spoiler alert, he quit
Another episode of "Where I ended up thanks to RUclips recommendations!"
Only this time it's actually relevant and it shows that nearly a decade later things are still the same, if not worse.
this vid gives me much hope ty for posting
Awesome filming and editing! This movement is getting so big, it will be interesting to see where it will go from here.
Congratulations on 10 million Subscribers!
Casey Neistat, still my favourite youtube content provider. All your films have a humanity and a lightness of touch. Keep up the great work...
I like how Casey did not mention even one time why they were demonstrating
The police weren't reacting since it was a protest against police brutality- the occupation was almost something akin of Martin Luther King where he'd march almost for the purpose of getting attacked, in order to increase recognition of his cause.
As always, great video Mr. Neistat.
Ahhhh yes they chose to recommend this to me now
at CaseyNeistat i just want to say i appreciate every one of your videos and wish your HBO show was still on and running strong...keep it strong and ride some bicycles!
This Is AMAZING. Thank you.
We need more of this.
wow = awesome to see this; as the populous still deals with this issue. the point made of 'one' cop changing the other nypd group actions; offering alternative outcome - to choose. this rare view that you show of a positive team action by another cop. = this is Great Reporting & can help to change the world (by example) to be a better place. All People need more compassion & to review our own personal ethic's of how we respond to others. (choices ~ how do we respond.)
Love your indepth reports & movies; you have become a great artist.
AWEsome to watch you 'Becoming your greatest potential' ~ & attempting to be a compassionate role model for so many who need such. Proud of you.
Thanks for the video!
i was waiting for something like this
Democracy is beautiful
PhlpxWslf Democracy is an illusion, your just brainwashed idiot.
ChilloutSessionZ We don't live in a democracy we live in a republic... Thus regardless of what your opinion of democracy is, if you have never lived in a democratic country, where you have been personally and directly given power amongst a group of peers for a limited time, to make decisions regarding all life in that country, then your current view of democracy isn't as true as it could be. Id love to invite you to such a country but seeing as population density has grown to its current proportion i'd have to inform you that that is impossible to do.
Cj Elliott Great comment :)
+ChilloutSessionZ You're an idiot.
veoozo keyboard balls say im an idiot, and you will be 17 feet under the ground with lime on you.
Very good video. Nice camera work and great work on showing what happened.
The mob look a bit like they just came from an England match at Wembley XD
I just love the music at the end. Thanks
What a bunch of sheeple. "Occupy" never accomplished or changed anything, besides ruining plenty of people's day. Most, if not all, never knew quite what they were protesting, or what they aimed to accomplish. In the end, everybody went back where they came from, having improved nothing.
Shut up you moron. It's better to be out there doing something about the inequalities and injustice in the world than sat on your fat arse doing sweet fuck all. It's time for change.
David Ciaramella Can you give me an example of something they've accomplished with their marching, their pounding of drums, their chanting, and their signs? Something they've changed for the better? Perhaps an injustice or a grave inequality in the world that they have eradicated with their efforts.
Ah, please. THEIR marching and pounding of drums? Maybe not so far but history is littered with examples of normal people rising up and demanding change - and succeeding! Quit being so narrow-minded and content with a system that gets more greedy and corrupt year-on-year.
David Ciaramella I never claimed to be content with the system. I volunteer my time in legitimate, effective endeavors such as working on political campaigns, community service, etc.
Essentially you've admitted that so far, they have accomplished nothing. But maybe in the future something good might come of it? That's a pretty idealist, pie-in-the-sky way of looking at things, which is not grounded in realism.
What they have accomplished is causing cities to lose inordinate amounts of money. The protests in Philadelphia cost at least $13 million all told. That money wasn't spent on public welfare programs. Or public transit. Or the improvement of roads and other public services. It was spent repairing damaged and destroyed public and private property, cleaning up massive amounts of litter, paying police overtime to keep the crowd under control, and all the other costs involved when you have a mob of unruly people overtaking a public space.
Then you have New York City, which had to spend at least $17 million on police overtime alone.
All of this and we're still waiting to find out what they've changed for the better.
The Occupy mob is comparable to a small child, angry that he's not getting what he wants. So he crawls to the middle of the floor and throws a tantrum. He screams and shouts and cries and pounds the floor. All his parents have to do is walk into the other room to escape his protests. In the end, the child wears himself out and accomplishes nothing.
The parents may be a corrupt system, but sitting on the floor screaming is not the way to change a corrupt system.
Seth Meyers
So you are dreaming of people behaving nice? Doing a polite political campaign that doesn't cost a thing? That improves welfare in the US? Well if you are so interested in cost-effectiveness look at this: the last election campaign in the us cost 6 billion $. People making use of their right are much cheaper. More than 120 billion $, does that sum ring a bell? It's the money spent in 2012 for waging war in afghanistan and iraq. You could easily save that money and improve the "worlds biggest democracy". Change won't be done by nice, well adapted us-citiziens, it will be done by those with courage and passion and a vision of a change that is overdue since the murder of JFK.
New Zealand lets this happen, they have permits to shut down the chaotic parts of the biggest city in NZ called Auckland. When the police don't do anything the protest happens and no one is hurt.
Watching this in 2020. All these years later you can see just how much Casey developed his style and videography.
How does this not have over a million views this is incredible
Tks CN!
These vids are amazing:)
This is one of my favorite movies of yours.
Go people of NY! Love the videos casey!
You make great videos man, keep it up.
excellent video - thanks and I hope you make more like this :-)
I like your outro dude that shits dope
very good video casey! thank you
This video is amazing bro
Such high quality for 2011 omg
2020 we need that good cop
Even after 9 years it still isn’t figured out.
very good video casey.thank you
"At one time the protesters were sprinting to get away from the cops" or their parents
+Talk4 Kids revolution and being against the establishment is always the job of the youth and that is good
Most people on the force are nice kind hearted people who understand the struggle others may have and respect that (as seen in this video) its when the protest against violence become violent by the protesters themselves to try and prove a point. This group handled everything very well! Made their point loud and clear without damaging other people's property and I respect that. (I was in NY with my family when this happened, was absolutely insane but from what I saw both the protesters and the police where kind about one another. The cops seemed to only be there to protect bystanders just in case.)
McClover thats positive yeah... sadly here in Italy the majority of cops are fascist (and they really are, i dont say that because they are cops), and they beat people who protest peacefully-non violent, and those who actually destroy everything are free to smash everything ... sorry for my english btw, greetings ;-)
valzerna Reminds me of an Italian government in the 30's and early 40's with Mussolini...
valzerna Reminds me of an Italian government in the 30's and early 40's with Mussolini...
***** That sounds like a conspiracy lol.
what were the protesters protesting about?
another good video casey thanks :)
It’s crazy the difference between now and then.
Not my favourite video of yours Casey, you didn't explain why the protesters were there and what they hoped to achieve apart from causing obstruction to traffic!!!
They were protesting against police brutality. It was on all the signs.
OMG I ALMOST made the Vlog! I would have been right beside you while filming Shamar Thomas.
This is Amazing where else can you see real footage of events like this?
I think it is encouraging to see US law enforcers showing such restraint. The NYPD ought to be proud of themselves.
I remember this, It was so close to becoming a riot, that's why the cops didn't use force.
This made me smile.
:)
well I think we all know why this is being reccomended
do you edit in iMovie? That's awesome
How cliche to put Semper Fidelis at the end. Love it.
The best news reporter in the world
Got this in my recommended during the ongoing protests lol
+CaseyNeistat truly the best story teller/video creator in the Internet
Watching this in 2020
Great time to recommend this RUclips
I love the in the street reporting Casey.
Casey making bangers since ages ago.
Very cool video sir, you just got a subscriber
LOVE the end!!!!
Very well made brother. One note - maybe make clear this was only part of the mass of protestors the police having split y'all into several parts earlier on.
there should be a city mob simulator were you have to stop protest and riots in cities
Holy crap. That is brilliant. I'm actually considering making something like that now.
Would be fun game. Includes strategies and tactics.
I understood "totally unefficiently' at the end and it made me laugh big time
its awesome that people may feel strongly about a certain matter, but getting in the way of cars that are trying to get home to their families is not the best way to end whatever they were trying to end
i love you!
saludos desde Colombia!
Screw Fox News! We've got you!
So... What were they protesting against, again?
Update 2020 here we go again
love the shih tsu at the end :)
Hey Casey,if you are seeing this, I want to tell you man I miss ur vlogs... I know it must be hectic but sometimes maybe I would look to see more ur vlogs ...
what editing software do you use?
And here we are again....
When I read the title , I thought they were protesting because of you
@caseyneistat
You can add an overlay annotation. In the list of your uploaded videos, for this video, click the little arrow next to 'insight', and choose annotations. Then just make the 27 into a 26 :)
Btw I'm in NYC for the moment. The first thing I noticed was there is police everywhere. Really even the schools overhere are protected with cops on every corner of the street. Is it always like this overhere? No wonder people protest ;) I'll have a look at Zuccatti park tomorrow.
Just weird thinking people in this video are nearly a decade older
Peaceful demonstration, even the police respected it. Love your videos, Casey. You're gonna go mainstream one day soon.
@Sam Ellis A little late to the party, bro.
great video
God nothing in comparison to now I miss at least this
History repeats itself
this protest was amazing
Nice report!
Who else is watching this in 2020 and was thinking. “Where Tf are their masks”!? 😂
Always that one guy
Either the date's wrong or I'm looking 12 hours into the future.
This is pretty good!
wow.. my school had a protest and got like two other schools to join us but clearly not this big :P we filled up the roads too :D it felt good. good job btw Casey :)
@WTFadtheking I understand perfectly what you mean, thanks for the information.
