NOTES: 1. Long video, I know. You asked me to publish it all together instead of in episodes. Use the chapters, you don't have to watch in one sitting. 2. Apologies for the muddy audio in the tour/features section, GoPro failure (again). 3. Subscribe and don't miss the rest of the series (trips, modifications, comparisons). 4. Are KTM's reliable? Honestly, I don't know. If you plan to ride a TON of miles, I'd stick to a Japanese bike. I never noticed how asymmetrical the fuel pods are That would really bother me Is the norden like that too? Also why no wind shield spoiler/lip as usual? How does the wind protection/noise compare to the Tuareg
Just bought a new 890 adv but from previous-old version, cost me about 30% less than the 2023 model, and it came with the tech pack with no additional charge.. Since I don’t really adjust suspension, I couldn’t resist the price difference and took the old one. Riding it 3 weeks already and very happy with it.
Even in the name of science, the sound of a dropped bike is the most frightening for any biker. It’s like hearing a puppy get hurt. It’s both violent and sad…
I drop my three times on average every time I go on the trail. So far I had no problems. Just some very mild scratches on my fuel tank protector. However, I have a 22 model. It's just plastic insofar metal
@@kloppskalli Thanks for the incredible new information, Captain Obvious. Question, since your wisdom and knowledge knows no bounds: will Christmas be on December 25th this year? Thanks for enlightening me.
I bought a 2020 KTM 790 Adventure S in December 2020. Added a few additions to it, But overall one of the best Motorcyles I have yet owned. Does every thing. LOVE IT !
I upgraded my 790 to this bike earlier this year. I still cannot believe how much better the 890 is in many aspects. I put 5000km on in 2 months and loving the bike. Thank you for an amazing in depth review!
I put 95K miles on my 2014 BMW 120GS and sold it to buy a 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R thinking at 71 100 pound less weight would be a good thing. Loved the handling and power (faster than GS) but found the high speed damping extremely harsh on sharp edge bumps and tried to have it addressed by a suspension shop a couple times and never got it to where I wanted it to be. Buffeting was bad and best I came up with was cheap eBay deflector that helped, but far from perfect. Mechanically the only issue I had in 10K miles was the OEM battery had a bad terminal and replaced under warranty. I found the bike is still nearly 500 pounds and lays flat making picking it up a pain! Ultimately I decided to sell it and bought another BMW GS. The GS just covers miles better, easier to pick up, but mainly at 71 I'm not going on any single tracks and GS will do fire roads all day long.
Then maybe its spring rate, not high speed damping. Its weird that revalve wouldn't solve it ; My '18 africa takes high speed hits very nicely,.as long as they not too big ; Rear is meh, but no bike have factory good shock :/
IDK what bmw puts in their dampers, they do really well with high speed damping. I know what you mean, it just soaks up the tiny road textures and undulations so well
I keep hearing moto vloggers drop passing comments about reliability concerns on ktm's, but they never actually explain what they are. As someone who is looking at buying either 890 Adventure or a 690 Enduro, I would really like to know what these are. Can you please talk more about this in the next episode?
200 lbs , you look a lot slimmer. I’m watching you after 11 months, due to a health situation. I’m starting to enjoy my riding. Sold my dream bike (Hayabusa) after 5 months due to my health problems. Now I’m coming back baby. I’m riding a Ducati Diavel but can’t wait to get back my Busa hopefully in a year.
Outstanding job as usual!! I really appreciate the "drop and pick up" demonstration, and it seems to be something that is somewhat unique to your channel(in my experience). I just want to say that personally, I would totally understand if you somewhat "placed" the bike on the ground as opposed to letting the bike free fall from the upright position.😃 It's painful for me to watch, so I can only imagine how hard it is for you!!..just saying. Appreciate all your hard work and dedication! Looking forward to the next video! Thanks man!!
Ian, my local KTM dealer chose the standard 890 adventure over the R as his personal bike and he’s owned nothing but R models. He said it was a game changer for the ‘road’ riding side of ADV. I can only imagine how good it would be on road as my 2021 890R is pretty damn good😎
I agree with you about cruise control being such a key feature. At this point it just feels lazy on the part of the manufacturer when it is not available.
Interesting times we live in with respect to motorcycles. My solution to the stupidity of trying to find the impossible do it all bike is to simply buy two bikes, a fully built/modded 2023 KTM 350 EXC-F for difficult and technical riding, and a fully modded 2017 KTM 1090 R for awesome high-speed rides to easier and less difficult trails. This decision has taken a few years to become a reality, but now I have two incredible purpose built bikes that can handle my favorite choice of riding each day. The 890 R is too heavy for technical riding and I have no use or desire for the complicated electronics, and the spiderman headlight. That has been my solution to the non-existent do it all motorcycle. Another great video Big Rock Moto!
WoW. OK.. looks like we have a game changer here!!!! Suzuki is listeng to their customers! This bike reminds me of a tiger 800xc but with a little better suspension perhaps? Cant wait for the full review!!
Loving the 890 R. Not sure it was the right choice for my riding but I love it. I do think I’d have benefited from the non R from a height perspective but I’m not getting rid of this bike for ages. It’s weight is carried so low that it feels so light. It only off camber stuff I’ll get in trouble and I have had a few close moments. I sold my r1200gsa for this and the 890r is incredible but I wish I’d seen this vid before pulling the trigger. On reflection, I would have most likely picked this one. Great bikes, great engines, ready to ride.
I feel your reviews are very honest and accurate. Even my wife likes your reviews as you are not a show off self centered individual. I have a 22 890 R and was interested in the wind buffeting improvements for the 23 which you covered. I rode from NH to Colorado and did the BDR on the 890R and found the bike to be amazing at everything except the wind buffeting. The only other strange thing is the chain tension when set per the manual seems on the loose side and makes a bit of noise and vibration. I am guessing this is probably the same for the 2023.
As usual and as expected great review Ian... I am currently in the market for an Adv bike and I was seriously considering 2023 KTM890 S model... I was happy to see you also got one and reviewing it. So I went to my local KTM dealership here in NorCal and sat on one and talked to owners of the dealership and other KTM owner friends... In all honesty after doing all that my excitement level went really down and I got cold feet towards 890S... I have no idea what's the reputation of the KTM trail models or larger 1260 models but none of my KTM riding friends told me that they will buy it again if they knew what they were getting into. They all love their bikes "when it's running" as they put it. But they complained of the relentless issues pushed them numerous times to the service for warranty repairs. Many minor and few major issues almost every KTM owner friend I talked to... Then in my personal experience when I sit on a 890 Adventure S I realized all the buttons and the plastic on it looks like it was purchased from Radio Shack and installed... Quality is nowhere to be found in any of those material. I am sure you also noticed that since you're coming from GS/A platform like I do... When I sit on a 2023 GSA and look at my dash and control buttons, levers etc, everything looks and screams quality unlike what 890 offers from the riders point of view. I understand we get what we paid for but still OTD price of $16,000 is not a chump change for not to expect a little better quality workmanship from a company like KTM.... I hope your experience will be a positive one with your 890! Ride safe!
I've been consuming 890 content like a big kid on a cake. After just finishing a 2000 mile trip up to Amanda's Rocky Mountain Roll, my AT is getting downsized to either a T7 or an 890, with the 890 as a strong favorite. The 890 checks every box my AT doesn't, lighter weight, tubeless tires, cruise control, lower CG and love the display. My only reservation are the reliability concerns in the back of my mind. Everyone I've talked to with an 890 have had generally good responses but I am leaning towards a new one for the warranty. Going to rent a T7 for a day and see how it feels, but everything I've read says the 890 is the better choice. Tell KTM you very likely sold a new bike for them ;) Again, thanks for the great vid.
Get training. It might save your life. My first bike was a KTM 1190 Adv, and that thing was 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. I took a LOT of classes. It's a light saber, and when I started riding I was not a Jedi. You'll spend less time being scared and more time enjoying yourself the more classes you take. Love the content Big Rock Moto!
Purchased my '23 KTM 890 Adventure base model over the R because it has fully adjustable suspension. It is lower tonthe ground. I can ride with the seat in high position on the highway, but as soon as I hit trails, I can quickly lower it! Love this feature! The Rally mode is a game changer for all sorts of varying terrain from sand, rock, gravel, mud! I seem to be able to get through muddy areas easier than many of my other Adventure companions because the intelligent traction control does limit the slip and bites. Gravely hillsides, I can increase the slip number and prevent that rear tire from chewing itself, the bike feels solid with necessarily needing the friction zone of the clutch. This bike is SO DAMN easy to lift from a drop, easier than my 300cc. It is light enough to maneuver or back up/push the way the rear handles are! Without racks, dropping it has caused little damages, that tank does a great job. I replaced the OEM skid/tank protector with AXP from Rottweiler. Adding your Puig wind screen atop the OEM screen helps with highway winds
Hi. I have watched all your videos about the KTM 890's. Last week I bought a used 21 890R. It has a starting issue. Did some research online and found many different people with the same 1 cylinder low rpm start and stalling. 10 to 12 tries before the bike stays running. There is a warranty history of this bike having the problem, with many parts replaced. Oddly, your in depth reporting has not covered this known issue. My bad for not doing more before buying this bike. Unlike you, many of us have to keep our bikes for a while after the warranty is gone.
Nice review I really prefer the cable clutch I think I get better feedback from it. I have a 2021 ktm 890 base model and I love it I agree about the base 890 being capable of most things. I don’t regret it.
Bought the 890 Adventure yesterday. This content is so valuable, thank you! Came off the Harley Davidson Pan America and already appreciating the huge difference in weight distribution
Nice video, thanks for making this. Sold my 2018 1290 Super Adventure R last fall and replaced it with a 2023 890 Adventure. I'll admit I miss the crazy power of the 1290 sometimes but since I ride with almost all of the rider aids off (just use the front ABS), this bike is very responsive. Other than the outright horsepower, everything else about the 890 is better. It's more agile, easier to move around the garage and I can actually pick it up alone. I generally don't do any mods unless I get something other than looks or sound out of it, so I wouldn't do the exhaust can change unless there was an increase in power or significant weight reduction. I'm considering one of the Rottweiler intake systems 'though. Also wouldn't mind a longer shift lever but haven't managed to find that yet.
I put an extension on the screen which made a huge difference to the wind noise. I had a Tiger 900 GT Pro before the KTM 890. I find the KTM suits me better.
Something has stood out in your reviews, Ian, that I think many folks need to keep in mind. In your comparison between the Yammy T7 and the KTM 790/890, you commented about reliability and were straight up honest that reliability is not a major consideration for you. You go through bikes really quick and don’t keep them all that long and that’s fine, but not everyone can or wants to do that. So in that vein, your reviews may be somewhat misleading to some folks. I believe reliability SHOULD be a key discussion in every review because a large percentage of viewers ARE concerned about reliabilty. There’s no doubt, KTM’s are not known for their reliability so talking up the 890 may be leading many people to a bile that though great to ride, might not be the bike for them because it does tend to be a lesser reliable motorcycle than others.
I enjoyed your in-depth 890 video. My KTM dealer just completed the first service 1000 km on my 2023 890 R. The oil screen was full of blue plastic particles. They cleaned the screen and told me to ride for a few days. They are going to look at the screen after the weekend. Could it be sealant or thread lock no one knows. They sent a report to KTM HQ but have not heard back from them. Could you provide the part # for the missing piece of the KTM skid plate
Agreed, cruise control missing would be a deal breaker nowadays... in the US with our long distances and fuel injection there is no excuse except cheapness... Maybe you wouldn't miss it in Europe, but if you do any long distance here in the west you need it... and this is coming from someone who has been riding for 55+ years.... mostly without cruise control.
Errrr ......... no CC is a deal breaker for me and I live in the UK. Once you have it and use it, you want it. It's especially useful to stick to the lower speed limits otherwise you constantly have to concentrate on your throttle which I have to do when I ride a couple of my older bikes that don't have it. Frankly it's a pain not having CC.
Very nice review. I was debating between this KTM 890 and Aprilia Tuareg 660, and ended up with the Aprilia. Your videos were everything needed to ensure I was making the right choice for my riding, so thank you for the videos. I really enjoy watching and listening to your experiences. Keep up the good work.
What made you choose the Aprilia over the KTM? I‘m at the same point as you were deciding between these to machines. But i‘m still not sure what to pick.
@@patrickkechter3698 for me it was the availability and the price of the bike. The Aprilia I got a 2022 demo bike for 10K with 1000 km on it, which is significantly lower in price than the KTM around 14K on a 2022 model. I also like the smaller size of the Tuareg, the sound and performance is amazing on and off road. This is a personal note, but I really like the design of the Tuareg as well. But overall, I have been very happy with the Tuareg. The cruise control is amazing and the bike is super light in terms of going around the curves on the road. The suspension off road is super good as well. I could not argue with the specs and the price of the Tuareg. I test road the KTM 890 adventure, the 790 Duke and the 890 Duke and all of the KTM bikes are super powerful. It is an insane amount of power that you get from the KTM. Hold on tight is all I can say. haha so this much power was too much for me. I did not see it as a winning factor. The Tuareg has a nice punch, and gives me the same feeling, but milder punch on the throttle. I cannot say enough about the sound of the Tuareg for the intake....it is amazing I really enjoy the sound. I would say... GO for the Aprilia! You will not be disappointed. You will have a blast.
@@austingann313 Glad to hear that you are happy with the Tuareg. Yeah the price difference is quite big here in Germany. 12k for the Tuareg an 15k or 16k with the tech package for the KTM (23 model). That alone should be enough to make the decision the more i think about it. Plus the suspension has way more headroom like you said. Thanks for your opinion
Aprillia seems quite limited on long distances/ heavy carrying/ another person with you. I havent riden it, but seat doesnt look comfy for multiple day / weeks trips eithers, too narrow. I like Triumph, but maybe its in different price category, and more into long touring, while Aprrilla is for day trips in woods.
Happy Memorial Day and thank you for always making my Mondays better. I commiserate with you over the lost footage. How frustrating! Currently riding a Hypermotard 950 SP (desert X motor) which has a fantastic engine and comfortable ergonomics. But... no cruise control, wind protection or large fuel tank. I'm looking for something that combines fun on twisty roads, long-distance capability, upright seating, and the ability to handle short stents of maintained gravel roads. I would be riding pavement (90-95% of the time) so I don't know if I would be wasting its potential. The new 890 SMT also looks amazing.
Finally, after what seems like years I finally got a M/C dealer to "negotiate" a deal again. Yesterday, 10/5/23. I signed / purchased a new '23 KTM Adventurer. $300 off the $13,999 MSRP. $13,699 plus the $700 Tech pack installed for free. a Center Stand, and Heated Grips installed for free, (there's some confusion if Heated Grips are with the Teck Pac, anyway they said that it will have heated grips and a center stand on it when I pick it up) and, they're giving me $3500 trade-in for my '08 KLR650. Thank you, Ian
Looks very comfortable for Maggie and full size panniers would not interfere with the pillion. Good to see Maggie doing reviews 😀👍. Like to know what she thinks of Ian being out on his bikes all the time. Also not another bike! although your lucky as it's your job. Like production values are going up with the smoke machine. 👍 Good stuff Ian your reviews are the best on the Net.🎉
Another excellent review, as usual Ian. Thanks to your experience and in-depth knowledge, it is a great service to consumers and the sport of adventure riding. Keep up the great work!
Great in-depth review. Thanks Ian. Love your work. Very interested to hear your overall comparison with the Toureg 660. A future vid perhaps? I live in Europe half the year. So no issues with service with either Apilrillia or KTM. Both bikes look the goods, though I am inclined to pick the lighelter bike . Thanks
I also would much appreciate a comparison between these models, since i‘m currently debating between these two exact models. However the Tuareg is currently winning, for today.
Great review, actually change that to an Awesome review! KTM makes amazing bikes, had a 450, then a 690, then a 1290 SAS. With all the power you could handle and more, these bikes actually make you grin like a school kid. Your reviews are the most thorough I have seen out there. You really do your homework on the bikes and it shows. The 890 is probably all you need for an off-road bike, I think you will enjoy it in the dirt more than your Big BMW 1250. But, you will miss the comfort and power of the BMW. You should ride the 1290 SAS with some better tires. I can't believe that you dropped your NEW bike! Keep the reviews coming!
I'm really looking forward to your videos on this bike because it's a finalist in the running for my next bike purchase. I'd consider my riding 85/15 at this point but I really like the ADV style seating position. The struggle for me is I'm 6' tall but have a 29" inseam and while I can tiptoe taller bikes it just isn't very comfortable. While they're completely different classes of bike, at this point I feel like I'm trying to decide between the HD PanAm (that adaptive ride height almost sells the bike by itself for me) or this base model 890 Adventure. Hope more videos are coming soon on your 890 Adventure!!
Thanks for all your effort! Really appriciate your channel. This is the only channel I follow in terms of all my get to know stuff. Just fantastic!!! Well done❤
Loving my 28 890 adventure. 1700kms in just 7 under 2 weeks. It's been very comfortable and so far more than capable on and off road. I have found air down the stock tires a bit helped a ton with traction on gravel. Looking forward to your comparison between the aprilia tuareg 660 and the base 890 adventure off road Ext.
Great video Ian! Bought the same as you (also the orange), got it late April. Done in excess of 5.600-5.700 kilometers with it. Coming from a 1290 Super Adventure S and used to travel long distances across Europe I was, and still is, not quite sure if it will deliver. But I will say, this far, it's been a hoot. Very satisfied. No issues except a vibration noise that turned out to come from the top box mounting plate. I've had no software issues re favourites on mine. But the CC conked out one after being washed. Came back though. Going to report that. For Scandinavian conditions, which is more gravel/dirt and less sand, I find the STRs tires work surprisingly well. Even deep gravel isn't a problem, the bike behaves very predictably. And steers phenomenally. Being 6"3 I put on the lowest KTM risers. It helped but not entirely sure it's adequate for me. Agree on the mirrors, they vibrate a lot although field of view is pretty decent. But I'll change those. Also got the Ergo seat (with heating), think it a lot better than stock. Looking forward to your next video! Cheers :)
That 9k mile oil change is misleading. KTM in the owners manual says 9k or every year. I have the 2024 790 adventure and it is identical to the 890 except for adjusting on suspension. Love the bike!
Been waiting for EP.2 so thanks for the comprehensive version. Can’t wait for the long term EP.3? version. Still a little apprehensive about KTM reliability. Especially after owning a T7 for two trouble free years. But the 890 ADV is on my short list so I’m being patient for now. Great review.
Great review. Thanks a lot. Looks like a great bike . Just one thing I don't get... the suspension behavior off-road. You weren't going very fast at all . How can a performance oriented bike by a company like KTM still come with suspension that you immediately plan to replace? It's not a matter of cost reduction because it's only 1500 $ less than the R . And it's not like they don't know how to make a 200mm suspension that is properly damped and has pre-load on both ends... So it just doesn't make sense... Would still love to own this or a lowered R
The plug you referred to as the diagnostic plug is for the factory alarm. The diagnostic plug is above the battery and has a small panel you remove to access it. It is a Euro5 red connector
I also have the 2023 base model and when I was returning from Overland Expo a few weeks ago, it was very windy on the highway, several truckers were complaining about the buffeting on their vehicles. My 890 was super smooth and I was riding my stock tires. The stock tires had great traction on dirt, than after about 1500 miles, they became less effective on dirt, so I ordered some Motoz GPS for the rear. I am a satisfied owner with about 2500 miles on the bike so far.
What a review! Congratulation! I just bought it, and I'm still trying to figure it out and get to know it, so far just great feeling on this bike! Hello from Italy! 🇮🇹
Very much enjoyed the video, thank you. Just got one as my second bike after learning on small cc dual sport. Agree with your theory about this being a good bike for most riders- cost, tech and seat height were main considerations for me (I did try to swing my 30” inseam up on the “R” model and; at my level of experience that was a deal breaker, and am sure quite humorous to watch). Low center of gravity makes it quite easy to hold up on toes when I blow my lean angle coming to a stop. Your review is helping me learn more about the bike. She does have a bit of a naughty side, quite fun!
I am riding a 2020 790 Adventure. 7000 miles trouble free. i wonder if upgrading toa 890 in lignt of my limited skills is worth it. I have all the toys on mine already. Great bike though
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a long term Desert X video, some Australian channels have replaced the airfilters with aftermarket ones that last an amazingly long time in the bush, sort of removing the anxiety over access to the filter.
Can you interface with the diagnostic plug to monitor engine sensors, reset error and service codes, upgrade firmware, etc? I mean you as in us at home with an interface and computer program or smartphone app. Since the ECU knows the coolant temp at the sensor, same with the intake air temp, maybe oil temp -- can these be displayed on the dash? How about manifold vacuum, battery voltage, throttle position, engine load, etc? That's so accessible to developers, would be very valuable even with an unpublished procedure to access. Could be called troubleshooting mode. They're definitely getting better. I love your enthusiasm when riding, that speaks volumes. Having wiped the recording sucks but it feels like this outing is likely to be a better representation of your observations now that you've got more seat time on it.
Modern bikes get hot from running too lean. Its something that manufactures do to get pass different emission requirements. Cooling can be improved by doing an ecu flash. Cheers
Rapid bike EVO fixed that , and a load of other mods i usually do to a new bike , smog/cat delete intake/exhaust ect..... runs far better and way cooler without any lean spots or hard cold start or that stumble right off idle
Nice review! I went the "very tall" route with my 2022 890r and added WP Pro suspension. Still more than good enough for me on the highways. The whole 890 range is a fantastic design. Every time I ride my bike off road I am so impressed at what it can do. If I was buying a new mid size adventure bike right now it would still be the 890, even with all the great new bikes out there. The Desert X is gorgeous but the 890 is the best fit because of it's great overall design.
Great video as always! I own an African twin 2022 but I really like the looks of this ktm, as I mostly do on road trips I've been tempted to switch but looking at build quality, technology, cruise control I feel I would be a step down with the KTM. Probably better handling on curved roads and more comfort but I am not sure if it is a clever move. Any of you have tested both?
Just pulled the trigger on a 890. When I tested I new this was the bike I was looking for. Very agile on road with an egine very revy and capable offroad as well on easy terrain of course. Comfortable enough to ride two up. I a bit affraid with what's been said about reliabilité and heat coming from the engine but worth the try. Life is short.
Great information here. I think you just knocked me off the fence. Thanks for the shove and for putting this together. BTW, I've never subscribed to anyone's channel.... until now. Very informative piece.
Great review! Speaking as someone for whom English is also a second language, I am impressed at how articulate Maggie is with English. Her accent is deceiving: she seems to have great command of the English language. I know how hard it is to get proficient on a second language, so my hat is off to her. Maggie's thoughts and insights regarding passenger accomodations were very interesting! Please keep up the excellent work! Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
You may think about comparing many models sitting position by every time positioning bike and camera at the same spot and then comparing them frame by frame when you sit on them and mix that later. That might be helpful for a lot of riders.
Would be interesting to know why the 2023 890 Adventure is worth the premium over the "smaller" 2023 790 Adventure, because the 890 Adventure is 30% more expensive compaired to the 790.
Another great review. Watching it for a second time and thinking through my experience sitting on it. This is really my best option body wise I think (5’6” w/ 29” inseam). I have mixed feelings about that reality at this moment, but I have to go with the low seat on pretty much every other popular ADV bike and I am still not quite comfortable on a lot of those. Coming from a Japanese bike, I am kind of worried about the reliability, but this is clearly the best combination of size, weight, flickability, features, and price for someone like me. Still getting comfortable with the idea, but I keep coming back to how I felt sitting on it. Thanks for another helpful video.
I just got home from one of Denver’s biggest dealer’s 75th Anniversary Festival where they had almost every single ADV bike there to check out except ones I have tried elsewhere. I loved the fit of the base 890 Adventure again, but I have decided to go with the base Norden 901 as my upgrade. I was surprised to find that I fit that just as well and as a short and picky rider, I liked it significantly more than the Tuareg, new Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE (which was much taller and bigger than I expected), the HD Pam America I sat on at a different dealership yesterday, the 890, the Africa Twin, the Tiger 900 and BMWs I checked out last week.
Love your stuff. Long time subscriber. In the market for a new ride. Been riding for 35 yrs. Went from crotch rockets, roadracing for a few years, then got too old to bend over that much. Went into big cruisers...then in 2012, i boughy a very slightly used DRZ400S for a sweet deal of $4200 out the door. Still cant buy one for that. Now 53,000 miles and a ton of mods, have completely changed to adv/dual sport riding and also help run the big PNW Dual Sport Riders group. Which if you do facebook, i feel its the best club out there. We moderate it pretty good. Anyway, just having such a hard time choosing. Im short, 5'8" w/30" inseam. Lookinh for what i would call a lightweight...well light as possible. As i have difficulties lifting even my DRZ. I have to completely take off all my luggage just to lift it up. So weight is a big deal. Was really hoping for the 490 to be made. Even my KTM dealer took a down payment in it so i could be the first to own one here. Yeah, when they dropped the news, they refunded it. Super nice dealer that gives the club bikes to give away. Love the 790/890 plateform. But picking it up would be a chore. I do mainly forest roads. Like WA BDR, Idaho BDR and such. Love the little CB500X. But weighs about the same as your 890. So kind of doesnt make sence to buy that. Price is not an issue, i build jets for a living. Can you suggest a bike that maybe i havent thought of? Guessing the tuareg is a tad easier to lift than the big 890 due to the gas tank. Am i wrong? You would be the one to ask, with all your drop tests. Let me know your thoughts. Keeping the DRZ400 as she has been perfect, zero issues in 53,000 miles so far. So im looking for an easy as possible adv bike for those long slabs to get to the BDR routes. Easiest to pick up, capable of long freeway rides, decent suspesion, or i will have to modify it. Thoughts?
Thank you for this review. Very interesting, and I love the landscape . I just sold my bmw r1200gs (2019). I run for 4 years and do 52k (km). And this ktm 890 adv S is on my list for this summer. I want more Offroad orientation and a lighter bike. I like ktm before my R1200GS. I run for 2 years, the ktm 1290 Adv 2016, with the 30-liter gas tank. Great one. This model, the 890 adv S 2023, looks like a very good one for dayly driving and for making nice trails . Have fun with..👍👍👍👍
Love the review and the information! I just bought one (2023 890 standard model) before your first video came out and I am loving it. First KTM. I agree the wind protection not too good. I added a clip on visor and it was a huge improvement. I also agreed with your assessment of the Tiger 900 Rally Pro...I just about bought one when I test rode it. Great machine, great windshield, comfortable...tall and top heavy. I look forward to more videos on this machine!
ah, i forgot to ask in my previous post: Vitold in Poland has also reviewed the 2023 890 adv and was not happy with the heat from engine 'grilling his legs'. Nothing in your video about the heat coming from the engine, all good during your rides? Thanks
I just wanna say, I have been watching your content for a while and I really enjoy it. You have your own way of doing things, you are really thorough and I would like to thank you for that! Like your video for instance about Honda AT DCT I mean nobody has made a video that would cover so many aspects of the DCT (good and bad). This KTM also is on my radar and your videos help understanding what the bike is about. Thank you! You are great!
Great review and hoping to pick up one soon! Can you tell me what gloves you are wearing in the short ride portion of the video? Thanks for the great content and time you spend reviewing motorcycles.
I loved riding the 890 on some test rides. Like riding a Honda Grom. Full throttle all the time and lightweight. But at my height and weight I had to get the 1290 but there is something to be said for a low power light bike, so much fun!
Wanted to purchase this bike but the stock in South Africa is all sold out for 2023, and according to the dealer they will only be getting stock from the distributer again in 2024. So now I am looking at the next best option being the Triumph Tiger 900. And no, not even any second hand options available at the moment.
Is the cruise control generic or adaptive? How good is the quick shifter?works up and down? Do they offer extended warranty? Are the brakes linked? Same questions towards 1290SAS
NOTES:

Great video. Must have convinced a lot of people to get one of these amazing bikes.
I never noticed how asymmetrical the fuel pods are
That would really bother me
Is the norden like that too?
Also why no wind shield spoiler/lip as usual? How does the wind protection/noise compare to the Tuareg
Best review on the internet, normal guy with everyday experiences.
Just got a 23 Ktm 890R because of your videos, thank you for the great content, ? Is what cell phone holder do u have in this video?
About reliability, my bike is a 2019 with 27500 km on it. Not a single problem except a battery that’s needed changing.
It’s both violent and sad…
...I still hate much more the one muffled by my body (and trust me, I fall a lot in dirt) :D
Total cringe moment
it's built to fall over
I drop my three times on average every time I go on the trail.
Then maybe its spring rate, not high speed damping. Its weird that revalve wouldn't solve it ;
My '18 africa takes high speed hits very nicely,.as long as they not too big ;
Rear is meh, but no bike have factory good shock :/
I can only imagine how good it would be on road as my 2021 890R is pretty damn good😎
That's exactly why I'm swapping my 790 R for the new 790 next week. I like the 790 engine better and the price is good.
I'm loving the updates they have made to this bike over the last few years. Attention to detail. ❤
I agree with you about cruise control being such a key feature. At this point it just feels lazy on the part of the manufacturer when it is not available.
Lazy in this case = cheap
@@Angry-Lynx agreed
Truth!
The new Honda Transalp no cruise control.
Great bikes, great engines, ready to ride.
now you’d prefer what?
I feel your reviews are very honest and accurate. Even my wife likes your reviews as you are not a show off self centered individual. I have a 22 890 R and was interested in the wind buffeting improvements for the 23 which you covered. I rode from NH to Colorado and did the BDR on the 890R and found the bike to be amazing at everything except the wind buffeting. The only other strange thing is the chain tension when set per the manual seems on the loose side and makes a bit of noise and vibration. I am guessing this is probably the same for the 2023.
Big Rock Moto makes my fav moto reviews on youtube. Down to earth guy, and drives in nice places. Explains everything very well, too.
Excellent review! I’m riding the 390 Adventure now and feel the 890 may be my next bike. At 5’8”, I’m really liking the relatively low seat height.
Just pulled the trigger two days ago ;)
Watching from Australia. 🇦🇺
I've had an R for 2 months now. No issues, love it. Even the R makes a great street bike. Great video and looking forward to the others.
Nice one! I went with the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition
🏍️💨
Would love to see your review and breakdown of it.
Roads can be very long and very straight in the West.
Hi Ian, love zur approach to bike-testing. Best in class. Could you make a mid-size adventure buyers guide for new bikes in 2023? (600-900cc)
@@patrickkechter3698 happy to help! Looking forward to you next bike 😎🙌
This is another wonderful review! Very thorough and as good as I’ve seen done anywhere. All you need and no fluff! Thank You Sir!😊
Amazing chanel!
Very complete!
Drops a new bike. That's commitment excellence.
Great reviews. The best.
Thanks.
Thank you for including serviceability info. The practice of forcing dealer visits needs to stop. KTM scores high in this regard IMO. Cheers
Another excellent review, as usual Ian. Thanks to your experience and in-depth knowledge, it is a great service to consumers and the sport of adventure riding. Keep up the great work!
You had me sold until you bottomed out the rear shock. Prefer the R model I think, but happy on my 690 for now. Great review thanks.
Which bike generates more heat, Aprilia Tuareg or KTM 890 Adventure?
Thanks for all your effort! Really appriciate your channel. This is the only channel I follow in terms of all my get to know stuff. Just fantastic!!! Well done❤
Loving my 28 890 adventure. 1700kms in just 7 under 2 weeks. It's been very comfortable and so far more than capable on and off road. I have found air down the stock tires a bit helped a ton with traction on gravel.
Looking forward to your comparison between the aprilia tuareg 660 and the base 890 adventure off road Ext.
I'm loving the fact that you invented time travel. Well PLAYED, Sir!🤣
The husky expidition looks a great bike as well
Great video Ian!
You are so methodical and logical Ian, I love it.
I'm on a verge of purchesing this bike
My only concern is that it will not be that comfortable as a daily bike (homework commute)
WDYT?
23:39 that should be the connection for the optional alarm system. Diagnostic is the red connector above the battery(OBD2).
Regarding the quality and reliability issues that may occured until this moment, do you still prefer it over the new transalp 750?
Thank you for the amazing video on the bike, I am thinking of getting it for my first bike. Would it make a good first bike?
Great review. Thanks a lot.
Looks like a great bike .
Just one thing I don't get... the suspension behavior off-road.
You weren't going very fast at all . How can a performance oriented bike by a company like KTM still come with suspension that you immediately plan to replace?
It's not a matter of cost reduction because it's only 1500 $ less than the R . And it's not like they don't know how to make a 200mm suspension that is properly damped and has pre-load on both ends...
So it just doesn't make sense...
Would still love to own this or a lowered R
Suspension difference between the 23 890 and the 901 Norden? Wind management?
Loving the 890
The plug you referred to as the diagnostic plug is for the factory alarm.
Get the GIVI airflow and you’ll be very happy on long distance. I was told to not do it but honestly best addition to the bike.
How does the standard model compare to your previous Norden 901??? I'm leaning towards the Norden based on my research thus far...
I also was looking for comments covering that very question! Great video Big Rock Moro!
The most clear videos about this motorbike, loved it
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a long term Desert X video, some Australian channels have replaced the airfilters with aftermarket ones that last an amazingly long time in the bush, sort of removing the anxiety over access to the filter.
Cheers
That’s a good point
Rapid bike EVO fixed that , and a load of other mods i usually do to a new bike , smog/cat delete intake/exhaust ect..... runs far better and way cooler without any lean spots or hard cold start or that stumble right off idle
Actually, the unused plug under the seat is for the OEM plug & play alarm system and not for diagnostics.
Can you compare the wind protection on the highway with the BMW F 850 GSA? Which do you think is more comfortable?
Great information here. I think you just knocked me off the fence. Thanks for the shove and for putting this together. BTW, I've never subscribed to anyone's channel.... until now. Very informative piece.
Hello Ian. Thank-you for all you detailed reviews. They were definitely helpful in my decision to purchase a KTM 890 Adventure.
Ktm 890 adventure base or norden 901?
Let's appreciate the guy at 43:18 for letting Ian pass him.
Thoughts?
Your best review yet! Well done. Any chance of comparing the Ibex 800 against it?
Thanks
Also watching as I travel I’m from Australia 🇦🇺 the 890 will be my next bike for ADV in Aus
I appreciate that!
Thanks for the thoughtful review. What brand seat cover are you using? Thank you.
Really good review!! Interesting bike. I wonder how reliable it is in a long term. Any chance for honda transalp 750 review ?:)
Ian, how do you feel this compares to the Norden? For mostly touring use (with some light offroad, gravel roads, etc.)
Just a thought on the Techbox, looks about the right size for a GPS to be locked up to make sure it doesn't sprout legs and walk off
Great review and hoping to pick up one soon! Can you tell me what gloves you are wearing in the short ride portion of the video? Thanks for the great content and time you spend reviewing motorcycles.
I loved riding the 890 on some test rides. Like riding a Honda Grom. Full throttle all the time and lightweight. But at my height and weight I had to get the 1290 but there is something to be said for a low power light bike, so much fun!
are you 6'6" and 300#
It isn't low power. 100+ hp on a bike of this weight can easily loop you or shove back in the seat in a very fast manner.
@@freeheelsak I’m 6’6” with a 38” inseam and weigh 260 so yes, 100hp is not enough. Even my dirt bike makes 60hp.
My de-catted Triumph Scrambler 1200xe has no heat issues, a great touring/luggage set and great offroad. Needs a bigger fuel tank.
Wanted to purchase this bike but the stock in South Africa is all sold out for 2023, and according to the dealer they will only be getting stock from the distributer again in 2024. So now I am looking at the next best option being the Triumph Tiger 900. And no, not even any second hand options available at the moment.
Outstanding effort on this review. Impressive evolution of the 890 platform with the base Adventure a great option for many.
Is the cruise control generic or adaptive? How good is the quick shifter?works up and down? Do they offer extended warranty? Are the brakes linked? Same questions towards 1290SAS
