I’m by sorry I stopped trusting this company a few years ago It doesn’t matter where they manufacture they are just not worthy of my hard earned money.
it makes no difference to me where a bike is built - if anything the bikes built by CF will be better on QA because they will really be cracking their own whip due to breaking ground and building their brand, they know how the west is and they know not to give excuses or reasons
The only reason I don't like this bike being built in China is that it's probably a cost-cutting measure, but at the same time it costs a good 2-3 grand more than its Japanese competitors with KTM service intervals.
I'm a dealer. I have sold a ton of 790/890/901 units. I have yet to see a camshaft issue and I have gotten several bulletins form KTM on how to take care of the problem if I see one. If its still in warranty just submit a claim, if its out of warranty just submit a goodwill claim and I will get paid to fix the bikes.
@@dg1019 So then explain to me.... My dealer set the claim. Rebuild my engine due to worn cams... I payed all the labour and parts. Parts meant to be refunded to me... It´s already over 6 months and I am still waiting for refund. And dealer keep saying hes waiting for KTM. :-D Sounds like BS to me :-D
Ktm‘s email doesn’t even come close to addressing the scope of the issue. They are correct there is nothing wrong with the camshaft. This has been proven by hardness testing and heat treat testing. However the main oil passage and the main oil jet does not allow proper lubrication for the camshaft, which is destroying the camshaft. This is confirmed by Ktm North America rep. It is also confirmed from Ktm North America rep, that all 790s 890s and 901s duke and adventure have this problem. My 2023 890 adventure R with 2300 miles was in a dealer for the same problem at the same time a 901 was in there for the same issue. The dealer had also confirmed what the Ktm North America rep said this is affecting all bikes, all models globally.
The whole letter: "If your feeling..." lol feelings have nothing to do with a wrecked engine lmao. And everything is "goodwill" - no, it's not. Its warranty and they better honor it but the difference is in accounting and KTM is thight on money right now.
I would just like to say. I have watched many of your videos and find them amazing. You cover the whole topic with great detail. For people that have less bikes to try the videos and information is fantastic. Thank you. 🙏
Currently 3k miles from home on my 2024 790 ADV. has 7k miles on it now and will have 10k in the next week. It’s had 0 issues so far. Gets 58-60mpg and is comfortable and fast. No complaints so far.
Thanks for the informative review Ian, well done! This 790 is my sixth KTM product, no more issues than with any of the four Japanese brand bikes I’ve owned. They have all been good while applying the correct maintenance to them. Without question, the KTM’s offer a larger grin factor than anything else I have owned. I now have over 6500kms on the 790, which has all the Tech Pack, no problems to date. The bike is a true hoot to ride on or off road. You do need to pay attention to the air box if riding in groups in dusty conditions. I run a pre filter and check the air filter after every extreme dusty ride. Suspension, comfort and fuel range work perfect for me and my riding. Love this bike!
Perfect timing ! I got quotes from my local dealerships last week for this bike and you have just released this video today 👍As I'll be using it on the road mainly, with some offroad from time to time, it suits my needs perfectly. I think it is the best value for money if you want real performance and electronics. I had a Tenere World Raid before, it was a fantastic bike for offroad use but not so great on the road. Not at all concerned about the camshaft issues or the fact that it is being made by China. Thanks for your review, I am off to sign the contract... 😁
This is the thing about owning reliable bikes, we just take reliability for granted and don't even comprehend what it is like to have the bike at the dealer for 3 months, or waiting 6 months for parts.
I have the 790 adventure 2023/2024 off road addition. I got it back in march this year and I've put just over 6000 miles on it. So far all running great. Plenty of green laning and I love the bike so much 👌🏻
I'VE e owned (2) 1290 SA , 690 Enduro R and many 250/300 platforms . I just bought a Vstrom 800 DE and absolutely love it ! It gives me piece of mind knowing im back on one of the Big 4
The new 790 has been out in Europe since 2023. I have 15k km on mine, apart from a small radiator liquid leak (easily solved under warranty) I haven’t experienced any issue so far. Of course I hope I will never have any other isse as I truly love this bike! This is by far the best entry level adventure bike, I can say this because I did everything with it: solo and couple traveling, light and heavy offroad. The engine is superb, comfort is good and no other competitor come even close on electronics.
At 15, 000 miles , I'd research Valvoline's Restore' . It's targeting symptoms the factory says needs addressed in there assessments of problems over time . T/C/E
85tt has so much going for it. If I was not going off-road much, it would be my very first choice. Great looks, character, reliability, easy to maintain yourself and they can be had for a good price for everything you get.
Ooooh... You got me interested in the KTM again.... This is such a great bike it seems. I've wanted a KTM for YEARS but it just never happened. I rode a 990 Adventure once when KTM came into town and had a demo day. It was scary fast! Haven't had a bike in over a decade but got to get one. I think 2025 is going to be the year. My two top choices: The Himalayan 450 or KTM 790 Adventure. I love the cost and relative simplicity of the RE. But the KTM is so perfectly designed and I love the looks. It's so perfect I think I could be happy with it for years. In that sense, it would be less expensive to own than the RE. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your great videos!
I have one. 2024 model year. Put Motoz tires on it right away. Side stand sensor went at 5000km, replaced by warranty. No other issues. I plan to replace oil every 5000km. I am now at 10,000km and just did the ORBDR. It performed flawlessly. Happy with my choice.
Here is my impression of every 790/890 owner. “Well I put 3,000 miles on my KTM the last 3 years and it’s been perfectly reliable!” The milage these KTM guys are citing is embarrassing. These bikes don’t fail till you get over 10,000-15,000 miles which is also embarrassing but I keep seeing KTM owners with shockingly low miles praise the bikes reliability. Every modern two cylinder fuel injected motorcycle should be able to go 50,000 miles with only oil changes and valve checks. These KTM guys pay for the prestige and the “Look at me” factor and then do a bunch of mental gymnastics about how they need professional level performance and don’t mind dealing with more maintenance because they really need the best off-road performance for riding 1,000 miles of dirt roads every year. Adv is the new Harley. Klim is the new leather. Lots of mid life crisis getting cut short by cam shaft failures. That being said. Ian does this motorcycle stuff better than anyone. What a fantastic opening 😂😂
@@IRLtrolls thank you for pointing this out. I thought I was living in the twilight zone with these ktm guys listing miles that are barely break-in miles for yamahas that go 100k miles with just valve checks and oil changes.
@@justsomedude445 Don’t know any? I personally know people with KTM issues and all of them were pre cam shaft. My good friend just sold his 1290 because of electric issues the dealer basically told him “tough luck”
@@DB-sd3cw I swear to God I was on instagram the other day and saw a guy say he has a 2024 901 with 1,000 miles and it’s been flawless. Geez I hope so!
Whatever the 790/890s are capable of ... all those reliability issues makes them a no go for me. I would also choose the T700 over the KTMs. An adventure bike first and foremost has to run. A low center of weight or a great suspension is not worth a penny, when your bike is not running and you are far away from the next dealership. Before considering one of those bikes, they would have to rebuild a good reputation over two or three years. Then we can talk again.
@@bpatinas1578 Adventure bikes are always a compromise. Of course you could do better on the roead with a Panigale, offroad on a 2-stroke dirtbike and long distance on a Gold Wing. You just have to shrink the two bikes you don't need at the moment and put them in your pocket. Problem solved. BTW - the bike, the video and my comment was about, is 9 kg heavier, than a T700 ;-)
I got my T7 out the door with all dealer fees for 10k. It is light enough and has plenty of power. I also don't have to spend an extra 1000 to unlock all the modes. The KTM might be faster and have more features but I am of the philosophy less is more. I think the T7 looks bad ass and has a lot of presence on the road. If I have unlimited funds I would have my T7 as a daily driver and. 1390 super adventure as a toy.
Big fan , but chewing popcorn while seeming annoyed by the fact that people may bash on ktm because of lack of maybe weak parts or QC seems a little counterintuitive! The bikes they make in Austria have these issues as well. I realize you like ktm and I do as well but that’s the world we live in. I don’t really know a lot of serious adv riders that don’t consider reliability at the top of there list when buying a bike.and ktm has issues more than Japanese brands , it’s just the truth. How was the popcorn?
My 2020 adv R is being fixed for eroded cam lobes right now. Whole new head and components that KTM is covering in full so that is the good news (I have a good dealer). IF it is ONLY poor oil delivery and not also a combination of possible metallurgy and or heat treating issues, AND it really is random and most bikes will never be affected, I hope hope hope that the replacement parts will resolve this issue for good. If I have to revisit this same thing in another 3 years, ANGRY will be a gross understatement! I really love the bike otherwise and would hate to become a "Never Again KTM" former owner. Do admit though that the performance bang for buck is great for these bikes.
I bought one and have enjoyed 5000km problem free this summer. 😎 Only problem i had was the screen that created a lot of buffeting. So i put on the screen from the 890 SMT and now it is fantastic..
Great review, and I believe you know more about the 790/890 platform as an owner and rider than any other reviewer. My 2 cents, the 790 KTM is an amazing value, period. Start of the year I seriously considered the purchase of the 790 KTM, and if the bike had shown up in dealerships when promised, I probably would have bought one. As it turned out I bought a Tuareg 660, which I love riding, and it really is as good as you rank it. However, I do think the KTM 790 is better suited for longer distance touring and riding with a passenger, my wife doesn’t appreciate riding with me on the Aprilia. Thanks!
Despite following break-in procedures (varying speed, revs under the break-in warning zone, staying away from full throttle), and strictly following the maintenance schedule performed by the dealer, my 390 Adventure has had a wide range of issues. Day 1 coolant leak, occasional check-engine and throttle input not responding, weird issues with cold starts where it starts, idles 2 seconds, then dies (but ALWAYS runs on the third try), warping two front rotors despite normal road use (no track, no abuse, just commutes to work and occasional casual trails), sudden drop in fuel econ (48-62 instead of the 70-75 I was getting), quickshift+ operation difficult, issues detecting neutral preventing the bike from starting with the clutch out, 5th gear now sticking and sometimes popping out under accel, and recently, bolts backing out... It's been in for multiple warranty fixes (and I don't like being "that guy") and while they fixed the throttle issue, everything else has remained. Other than being disappointed by the suspension and overall offroad worthiness of the bike, I've really enjoyed it when everything works but my other bikes have needed nothing more than regular maintenance. I just feel like I made a huge mistake not going with one of the Japanese Big Four and I don't think I'll trust KTM again.
Spot on review Ian. I currently have close cousin bike the 23 901 expedition with 13k miles. You hit all the key points for the platform. Just to emphasize, high fun factor, versatile and confident on/off road personality. Only issues I've had so far are quick shifter needed calibration, both spark plugs not torx correctly from factory, and failed water pump seal. All covered under the 2 year warranty. My local ktm service center currently has a 890 waiting on a ktm good will request for camshaft repair/replacement.
I was a big advocate of KTM prior to these issues and how I saw them treating their customers. In that facebook group there are many stories of customers who had to eat the cost of the repairs if the dealer didn't do 100% of the service maintenance on the bike. It will be a long time before KTM regains my trust. I even opted to go old school on my latest 300 two stroke purchase and picked a Rieju over a new TBI bike. I know the TBI is better but with all the tech in it, I just don't trust it not to fail. The rieju's old tech will last trouble free for a long time.
Glad you were ready. You may have to turn the comments off. One thing about it. Current KTM owners will be building much more machines from there. There's a big world that will be glad to buy them. It's a lot to due with the price. Not everybody lives on a USA standard of life. I wonder about the warranty available in other markets. All good. I own KTM's and love them. There's a lot of issues with many manufacturers these days. Social media drives a lot of it, really a lot of things are contact parts without good quality control. The auto world has been swamped with bad parts of late.
It took the internet to get KTM to admit it. When Ducati released the Multistrada and that experience cam failure, they went "yup, we have a problem and we will recall all units...".
And their response to the Desert-X wheel failure was complete denial. Ducati of 10 years ago was good, but their handling of the wheel issue ( and other issues I had) convinced me to never buy another. My Tuareg is a much better made motorcycle.
Many bikers, who encountered camshaft / other issues, bought these KTMs because they wanted to RIDE them - not to fight the dealers.... People did not purchase these bikes to prove a point, or to engage a war with the company, so KTM SHOULD HAVE, with no arguments, and as soon as the cases piled up ( to more that 20 ), declared a TOTAL RACALL on all these 7-890s ! - which they STILL DID NOT DO ! Yes - there will, always be those, who are willing to take a risk, but for ME and many like me - NO thanks ! The indifference demonstrated by the management = a smelly fart in the owners' faces 🤷♂🤷♂
If not a recall then a commitment to remedy any problems with the camshaft/head funded by KTM should have been given. They have extended warranty on new 7/890 from 2 to 4 years, this does nothing for existing owners into it having exceeded their shorter 1 or 2 year warranty, apart from to dump the value of their bike
My KZ650 had 79,000 miles (127Kkm) when I sold, no repairs ever. My Concours 1000 had 126,000 miles (203Kkm) when traded. It had had one repair, to the final drive. My ZX1100E had 106,000 miles (170Kkm) when sold. No repairs ever. None. My last Gold Wing had 116,000 miles (186Kkm) when traded. Only repairs were two switches replaced. My FJR has 90,000 (145Kkm) miles. One repair, a starter motor replaced. When you start seeing KTMs running like those bikes, let's start talking.
@@IRLtrolls On the other hand, how many ignorant comments have I read that people say "race tuning" (whatever that means) is why motorcycles aren't built for reliability and longevity. Yeah okay dude. I'm sure racing circuits don't prioritize longevity or reliability for winning races.
@@exothermal.sprocket Uhhh they don’t? All professional race bikes and cars are rebuilt often. Most factory Motocross bikes get a new top end every race. A twin cylinder adventure bike is not a race bike and you nor I are a professional racer. Even the most extreme endurance races like La Mans, Baja or Dakar are still destroying equipment with no intention of using that engine again without a complete rebuild.
@@IRLtrolls My POINT was, people spout useless drivel with no detail, and in the process imply that race builds are mostly garbage, or that high performance (what is "high" by the way?) cannot coexist with reliability and longevity and efficiency.
I own a 901 and a 2018 FE450. I haven't had an issue with either. That being said, my confidence in the brand going forward has taken a hit. Selling these bikes on the used market may become a challenge. I've seen some bikes of this platform taking price hits or sitting on the used market for extended time periods.
My 2019 790 Adv had its 18k "big" service back in June with no issues and it still runs sweet as a nut. I've had two 990 Adv, one of which almost made 100k (myopic car driver killed it and almost me) and neither had any issues. My only annoying KTM was a 640 Adv and that was mainly because I wasn't prepared to rag it off-road. Maybe I've been lucky but I do recall other bikes I've had that were utter pigs and they were Italian and Japanese.
The 990s were quite reliable. I'm currently on my second one. P.S. There's a guy with a 990 Adventure with 300K miles on the original motor with no rebuild ever made! FB group guy.
I have the 790 adventure since july 2023 it has 19000Km and she's amazing litle problems with it, and Ktm solve it. loving my bike and about reliability, well my friend has a t7 and had problems with it, the other one as a voge 900 and 0 problems...
It is a nice looking bike. KTM has never been know for reliability. For 30 years. Heck mine seized 2 times before 10 hours. If I was to do any long distance riding I would never buy a KTM, Husky, GasGas as I want to ride and not be held up getting it fixed. They have issues with 4 and 2 strokes.
I’m just going to by a new adventure bike and it stands between the KTM 790 Adventure ore the Aprilia Tuareg 660. I need some help to choose??? What would you suggest? I ride more dirt and enduro trails.
Aprilia for sure, it is more capable for off-roading. I was on the same boat as you, but I’m leaning towards the KTM because it has the cornering ABS and I mainly will use the bike for commuting in Seattle, which means a lot of rain.
You don't do any serious miles on a bike. You don't $uffer the crap regular blokes do. Good to see you are recognising the Pieir KTM has issues. Cant wait till you try the Empty 450 - I see lots of backflips ahead. I do follow you and like and support your work ...love the intensity.
The Low slung fuel tanks is an absolute game changer, the weight distribution is similar to what BMW did with the Boxer engine, it’s one of the main reasons I purchased a “24 790 Adv, love it so far, time will tell on its reliability, in the mean time I’m gonna ride the hell out if it and enjoy Adv riding
I bought a CFMOTO 450NK at the end of March this year and have just under 8k miles on it and zero issues so far. So in the discussion of trusting the reliability of Chinese manufacturing, the CFMOTO facility is one of the most state of the art factories in the world and are striving hard to be known as a global player with their own brand as well as partnerships with other companies. So it’s no longer a question of production quality trust and boils down to geopolitical biases that would turn anyone away. That being said, almost every motorcycle from every brand has some part(s) that originate from Chinese manufacturers. Like it or not, we are a global economy and in order to keep consumer prices lower while still maintaining good profit margins companies will always source cheap labor, and right now that comes from China and India. But cheap labor doesn’t mean inferior goods so long as the demand to adhere to high standards remain firm.
GREAT review Ian. Thank you. As you said, ADV bikes are so good there is almost no reason to get a street bike. That said, please give your fun factor rankings of these five bikes assuming that they would get little if any off-road use. Thank you.
Some of the dealers and internet post say don’t put a lithium battery on the 890/790, it can cause electrical issues. I have had one on my 2023 Adventure for 6 months no issue yet. Do you have any info on the topic. Nice review. Thanks
Jaaaaysus. It's pretty bad when in 2024 you buy a motorcycle for half a years salary after taxes and have to take the motor apart and inspect the god dam thing to make sure the oil passages line up and it's not eating itself like you would some kind of freakin kit motor for a gocart or something...
One thing you, and a lot of other reviewers don't mention with KTM's. Every KTM I've ever bought, the dealership gave me the tech package free. I understand you can't advertise that they will "always" give it free, but at least mention it so people can give the dealership the ultimatum and I guarantee 9 out of 10 times, they'll give you it for free.
I got a voucher at a motorcycle show that got me the tech pack gratis on my '24 790 adventure. I am also taking the bike to the dealer for oil changes to get the 4 year warranty. After having a Ducati and a Harley serviced at the dealer, the KTM oil change is cheap!
Bought my 2023 KTM 890 adventure S in Southern California it now has 3500 miles on it. I got the complete tech package thrown in free with the bike. Also to note I paid $ 10,500 before tax and licenses for my bike.
My biggest question is, what happens when I want to sell or trade in a 790? Buyers will want to get them at giveaway prices because they are made in China and have known manufacturing issues. Trading them in the dealer will give you nothing for them because they are taking a risk. All in all it just screams "don't buy".
Thank you for this super helpful and thorough review. I'm noodling between a used ktm 790s, a new KTM 790 and the Ibex 450... this reminded me that the new engine might be much more manageable at low speeds, and the warantee is a huge draw. I'll have to check the cost of local shops maintenance, since that is something we usualy do on our own. Thanks again!
Thanks good review. What would really be fun is if you could get a BMW R80 GS to review. I sold mine a few years ago or I would let you use it. The R80 started it in the 1980s. I think you would find that the new adventure bikes are not an order of magnitude better.
Lots of people in this comments saying things, so shall i! I own a 2024 790 or at least my wife does. I purchased a V85TT...4k miles into ownership. We had a poor purchasing experience, not KTMs fault...we had a 'botched' 1st service that was remedied quickly by the servicing dealer. Story: Purchased bike without tech pack, 1st service is before demo mode ends, added tech pack at 1st service demo mode ended, tech pack didnt activate. Few days later got back in and got it added. I hear many people talk about the menu being intuitive and sure maybe compared to some other convoluted menu systems, but its way more complicated then my V85TT. Other then that tho, oh boy what a great bike, forget everything you want to think about the bike and give it a shot, it climbs onto the cams around 5k has an comfortable surge of power, that can excite even us, 20 year riders with sports bikes. The chassis handles its wheel sizes well for the road and the standing position at 6'1 requires no adjustment from my wifes 5'10 setup. I do think the STR are kinda trash offroad, very low lateral grip and even the trick rally mode slip control cant hide it, but on the road in the pouring rain, theyre legit. We got the bike to do 200+ mile days and FS roads, it does it. Reliability to be determined, but honestly im lucky we have the n+ 1 curse, if its down for the count we have a spare bike to ride. I daily an Italian bike, lol... who am i to throw spears? We often talk about the KTM as we ride and hot dang...we dont know what you would get instead if you where in the market for something like it. It'll blow the doors off a t7 on the road (we have an mt07 to compare), Its got more feaures then the transalp (what we cross shopped it against), and its waaay cheaper than the rally/bmw 900gs. My wife doesnt know what she would move to within the KTM line / other line when she looses confidence in the 790, she just hopes they keep the model alive. For my V85TT? Love it, cant wait to put the I told you so to bed and get the base africa twin, lol. Great review, stinks this bike has so much baggage, if youre in the market def try to throw a leg over. When you ride it like a complete fricken goon like we do sometimes that quickshifter works a dream too, the bike can hustle. Were about 10-15k a year across a few bikes people, sure if it'll break we'll find it...lol Final note, the engine sounds horrible...its marbles in a box, legit biggest complaint
Haha .. exactly I purchased a 23 V85TT to replace my 2013 GSA 90th anniversary….after seeing how momma BMW was cheaping out in the 23 GSA ..all for $30k+. I told my Piaggio dealer , after the first 500 Mike service to “stand by”.. I put 6000 miles on the V85TT in 2 months just waiting to be left stranded… nope… bike was bullet proof , zero mechanical issues aside from a loose rear brake master cylinder..3 minute fix….. from Daytona to Utah and back.. limited highway droning, plenty of 2 lane cruising and a “ respectable” amount of single track in Moab… 10 months later , the V85TT has over 12k miles….. easy/simple at home maintenance as well…
Thank you again for another world class review! You are, our source of information when it comes to anything motorcycles… I believe a long-term test somewhere in the range of 15 to 30,000 miles to determine if the 790/890 is truly reliable Motorcycle… thank you again for all the information that you put out there for us motorcyclist.
Love the intro Ian😂😂😂 couple of things: I have a 23 Norden Expedition, I've owned a total of 6 KTM products and none of them have given me issues. But ifdthe Norden eats it's cams, it is what it is. It's just parts. I don't care. Also, I run my throttle in Rally mode all the time. With the bike in Explorer mode. I found off road to not have the snap you need to loft the front over rocks or logs or whatever on command. It will pick the front in off road it just won't do it immediately. I also would not be afraid of the Chinese manufacturing of the 790. China is more than capable of producing quality.
Didn't stop me from buying one a few weeks ago. Rode it home and hit the brakes getting off the highway to get a feel for them. The entire top triple clamp shifted forward. An embarrassed service manager came and picked it up and had it fixed by the time they opened the next day. The explanation was that the bearing races were not fully seated when head bearing was torqued. Doesn't make me feel confident. I heard BS about my 390 being built in India and I bought it anyway. 390 has been flawless. I am questioning my sanity for purchasing the 790, but in fairness it's not my everyday bike so I was willing to gamble.
I read so many comments like this, so many issues from brand new bikes. Isn't that insane that I'd feel safer buying second hand bike than brand new one? Seriously, give me used 10kkm+ bike over brand new anyday
great vid as usual, thank you! Engine sound: compression is significant lower that on on the 890, that might be a contributing factor for more smoothness. Suspension: the suspension from the 890 standard version should fit 1:1, shouldn't it?
it doesn’t matter what i think ..sadly the damage has been done , they basically ruined their reputation by not addressing the issues quickly enough ..however the actual elephant in the room is if this bike is made in china it should be competing with CF moto prices not a premium for the name
Interesting that KTM have given this bike an Offroad mode considering they're on the record telling us the original 790 (non-R) wasn't made for offroad
I never received any communication from KTM. My KTM dealer which is eurosports out of Asheville North Carolina assured me if I had any problems with my 890 adventure r that it would be taken care of. I don't know what else to say. I'm sick of all of the social media garbage by people who don't even own one of these motorcycles. Or from people who don't even know how to change their own oil, or from people who have an ax to grind with their local dealership. My dealer has been very supportive since I bought the bike and I have over 6,000 mi on it. Mostly off-road. Decent comments like the one I'm writing usually receive no response, no traction whatsoever in the comments because I'm telling the truth. Of course I hope that my bike never has any problems, and it is absolutely impossible to watch any video about adventure bikes and KTM without being bombarded with all of the loud mouths in the comments who have no experience with ktms, would never buy one because they don't have the money to purchase one, and they just like trolling the internet to see if they can get thumbs up by other trolls. So whatever.
@@BigRockMoto Dang it - I love your channel. I am VERY concerned I never received ANY communication about this from KTM at all. I have a buddy who is going to pull the top end for me around 10,000 miles. I am not able to do it myself so I will let you know.
So, I bought a crf300l in late 2021, but while I was at the dealer there was an 890 adventure r that was recently traded in, and I sat on it and had a hard on for it for over a year, and was dead set on buying one new or used, and then the transalp came out, and I bought the transalp. There’s a huge difference in “quality parts” that much is obvious. Honda doesn’t have nice wheels or tires, doesn’t have the nicer chain and sprocket setup, doesn’t have the nice bars and hydraulic clutch, doesn’t have the nicer rider interface, doesnt have nice pegs, shifter or brake lever, doesn’t look as cool as the KTM, basically the KTM is better in every category on paper, and that’s a fact, but the Japanese reliability cannot be stated enough. 5S, SMED, and kaizen mean something to me, now that I know what it means, and it’s direct correlation to long term reliability in bikes. This is all my opinion of course and that means absolutely nothing on the internet.

Great.... Great, review, Did you ask Ben if his blew up yet, Ben Mr. KTM hater just can't say enough great things about his 790. I want one so bad but still out of my price range, and probably ability I'm a 70 year old rider with a 2022 KLR, and will probably end up with an IBX 450 or Himalayan 450. Looking forward to an IBX review. Keep up the awesome work.
@@IRLtrolls 16085 miles on my 2022 Husqvarna 901 no cam wear , 32000miles on the 1090r i had prior without issue , 36500 on a 690 prior to that without anything out of the ordinary
odd dude i stopped watching him when he sold the 901 with almost no miles on it because he didnt trust it and said his channel was going back to being geared for the beginner then he puts $4000 worth of high end aftermarket suspension on a Honda 750 transalp and then buys a 790 made in china and openly states over and over he did so to break it and prove his hatred for KTM
I find it really strange, how pricing works in different parts of the world. And I am not talking about simply differences in prices, but how the whole relative positioning of different products to each other completely changes. Because here in Switzerland, the 790 Adventure incl. tech pack costs 13.030 CHF which is significantly more than the Tuareg660, Transalp, VStrom and Tenere, which all 4 cost pretty much the same at 11.995 CHF. (Tenere 200 bucks less). Anyway... at those prices, I would say it is pretty much a no-brainer to get the Tuareg instead of the 790. Considering that the only argument against the Tuareg usually is "I am afraid of the uncertain reliability of an Aprilia" and KTM certainly doesn't win THAT argument ;)
I 'd buy one if I wanted a big bore ADV bike. But at the moment I'd rather have a smaller displacement machine like the CFMoto 450 or the Royal Enfield Himi.
I decided against a Chinese motorcycle. I had Vstrom and dual sport Honda bikes. So I’ve been choosing the more reliable option. Recently I bought a Ktm fully aware of the reliability issues. Thanks to your great videos. I chose fun over reliability. But I draw the line on the Chinese Ktm and got a 890 Duke. Baby step I guess. The adventure was too wide for city driving in Mexico where traffic is more hectic. A lot of driving through narrow spaces between cars. I use it to daily take my son to school. Overkill. I use rain mode with my son and sport mode when I’m solo. Having to pay extra for the tech pack is ridiculous but hey i bought it. I struggled with my choice for 2 years. I can see the appeal of a lower cost Chinese moto with Ktm support. In addition to quality you also have the lack of parts for Chinese motos. With Ktm you avoid the latter issue. Great content and videos!
Thanks from this comprehensive video. From a short test ride I had the impression that the Aprilia Tuareg 660 is far superior off road (ground clearance, suspensions etc.) and overall similar on road (Ktm better low rews, Aprilia catching up (being also 10kg lighter) at at high rews). Your opinion? Thank you.
Almost everything you use is either made in China or is chock full of Chinese made components. Like anything no matter where it’s made, what’s important is quality control, and that’s down to the brand.
@@spencervidal3168 Why? The camshaft issue has nothing to do with QC. I’m not aware that KtTM has a particular issue with incorrectly assembled bikes. Why do you think their QC sucks?
4 2023 890 R's discounted at my dealer for $11.9k. As an owner of a 1290 SAS, I'm not a fan of the APEX shocks if you plan on doing any serious off roading. Already had a leaking front fork seal and rear blown shock. Front fork covered by extended warranty, rear shock KTM is covering thankfully.
Love your videos Ian, I have a question witch you might or might not know the answer. Since KTK are going through a difficult time for the last year and a half, I herd that they were going to transfer most of their production to China and India in the future. Witch bike from KTM is completely build in Australia? Or are they all made in Asia from now on ?
Great review. I’m interested in buying a new 790 but my dealer is trying to sell me a new leftover 22 890s instead for $2k less. They claim the biggest difference is the street oriented tires. Thoughts on 890s vs current 790?
No sympathy for anyone expecting longevity or reliability out of a KTM - their business approach "Ready to Race" is upfront with performance being the most important criteria - and they do perform. Anyone taking a cursory inspection of materials and build quality (switchgear and dash say it all) will understand it is a high maintenance brand with the philosophy affecting the whole manufacturing process. I have owned multiple KTM's but got tired of the constant issues and decided to lower my performance expectation in favour of reliability and reduced maintenance. But I do rider recreationally and outright equipment ability is not part of the equation.
Thanks for the great video Ian, Thanks for the great video Ian, really appreciate you answering my question thank you for that. It looks like an amazing bike. It would be a consideration of me moving from my 2017 Africa twin down to this bike as it has so much and also with you showing how easy it is to pick up off the ground that would be a game changer for me , in a good way, always appreciate your honest, accurate reviews and yes, I would buy a Chinese bike
I always try to buy products that are made as close to home as possible. It doesn't matter if it's a potato or a motorcycle. I try to buy European v Chinese whenever possible. I don't care about any of the extras in the Tech Pack. No need for cruise because I ride in Europe, no need for a quick shifter because the gearbox is ace and I'm not looking for split second advantage, and I prefer not to have traction control because I've been learning to ride without for 44 years. So I save $800!
5500 trouble free kilometres so far. The fuel gauge is annoying but it is what it is. The ride is a little stiff but once loaded with camping gear and panniers it’s quite comfortable. I’m liking the upgrade from my 390 Adventure.
I’d be curious in your thoughts of this bike compared to your Vstrom 800de adventure model. I’m stuck between the two, but for someone that mostly rides on road the reliability and “out the box” affordability, partnered with comfort seems like the Vstrom would be the safer bet.
Ian never fails to give an outstanding and thorough review. Best reviews you can trust on RUclips. Zack Courts for street riding and Ian for off road/all around fantastic reviews and information.
I have 2 points to make, one about KTM versus Yamaha reliability and the other about Chinese manufacturing. I have owned two KTMs, a 1290 and a 525 enduro, both bikes were reliable and didn't give me any issues outside normal maintenance and wear and tear. That said the 525 was very high maintenance. A few years ago two friends and I brought the same model Yamaha, for all of us they were the worst bikes we had ever owned. Nothing but issues with mine from the day I brought it until the day I sold it, and Yamaha tried to give us the run around on warranty claims. This kept happening until the local Dealer advised them that the three of were friend that rode together and knew exactly what was happening with each others bikes. In this case the Dealer support was great. Overall the point is that any motorcycle manufacturer can sell bikes that have problems. Maybe KTM and their dealers need to improve their after sales customer support, if they don't riders are gong to vote with their feet and buy elsewhere. The second issue with Chinese manufacturing needs to be looked at more subjectively. The Chinese manufactured items depends on the quality outlined in the specification. Some of the world's leading brands are manufactured in China and we all know about the cheap junk from various auction sites. The difference is normally in you get what you pay for. Another part of this argument is about how many Chinese components are used in the build of Japanese, European and American motorcycles, are you going to stop buying them as well because they have Chinese parts. If I was in the market for a bike buying a bike, something manufactured in China would not be the issue, but how the bike suited my needs and how it performed would be the basis for the decision.
Great video as usual, reallylike all your videos! Would be interested to hear you point on the other versions of the T7 with upgraded suspension etc.. Im thinking of buying the T7 extreme.
I bought a KTM 790 Adventure S brand new in May 2024. It’s technically a 2022 made from Austrian parts and assembled here in the Philippines. I absolutely love the bike. The suspension is amazing! However, I was having trouble with surging when riding up the mountain. Had it tested and I need a new oil pump. It should be covered but KTM management is changing here in the Philippines so my dealer has no idea when I might get the replacement oil pump. Fortunately I can still ride it. Pretty frustrating.
I have a 2020 1290 SAS. Apart from eating batteries, it has been a great bike, great fun to ride. I am trying a NOCO lithium to see if that lasts better.
When you read that email, the first line was all it took for me to swear off KTM (and I love their bikes). If they're going to take the approach that certain people "feel" affected, they're clearly, and legally, distancing themselves from a larger class action. Obviously there's a massive issue with cam shafts across models & years and the ideas that they can issue a statement, but no recall or recourse, reminds me a lot of Jeep Wrangler's "Death Wobble". They both admit these issues don't exist and customers are left holding the bag. I hate to say I'm not buying a KTM again, but I can deal with it. I'd rather not have to deal with them.
"A cruise control button that doesn't work" Yea it is strange especially when you paid for it but what is likely a faulty brake sensor prevents it from working.
Great info. Thanks for putting this together. I have been a Honda man most of my life but my last two bikes have been KTMs. 690 and 390ADV. both were great bikes. My question is about your comment on the fuel gauge only reading after 1/2 tank. Does it also give you milage remaining at current fuel MPG for the entire full tank? I could live with that.
Yes... It would stop me from buying it. My experience with buying anything from China is that it's extremely difficult to resolve any issues that may come up. If for some reason I can get a reasonable solution it most often takes weeks or months to have issues resolved. I've just resolved to accept that I'm taking a risk when buying something from China and therefore limit my purchases by weighing cost against how much I'm willing to take a loss on in the event they (more often than not) don't provide support after the purchase...
mate ( an depth) vid was made with a stripped down 790 engine) Apparently it’s not the cams , it’s the oil wells that feed the top end - cams etc , not large enough or wrong angle and top end is not getting sufficient oil lubricant.
Great review. Love the low center of gravity on the KTM design, but until the KTM demonstrates reliability, I will just stick with my DR650 or buy the T7. Reliability is a critical factor to me SINCE I like to ride solo. IMO, Manufacturing in China is risking backwards step in reliability and reputation. Now if KTM went to Japan to manufacture, and with the design improvements, that might have been interesting to me. I really like your comparison chart showing three Japanese bikes in the same price range.
Can you please make comparison between KTM1290 S and R.. also do you think they will change anything in 2025. Thank you for all your time and great job
If things are ambiguous as to the real problem and the number of units affected, the best thing KTM could do is offer an extended warranty, maybe 30,000 miles and 5 years on those engines. And then be johnny-on-the-spot with repairs. That would give buyers peace of mind.
The 690 is the better deal; better performance and a smoother engine. I have a 2018 Duke 690, setup with bags and a windscreen as my “adventure bike”. It has been completely reliable and wicked fast for the 25,000 miles I put on it.
Nice review! the 790 adventure R SH is like 4k usd cheaper. should I buy a new 790 2024 adventure or get a 790 adventure R SH . I had a tiger 900 rally pro which was great . I am 181cm and rookie on dirt, but would like to do the TET roads. thanks a million

Yup. Not a fan of slave labor
I’m by sorry I stopped trusting this company a few years ago
It doesn’t matter where they manufacture they are just not worthy of my hard earned money.
it makes no difference to me where a bike is built - if anything the bikes built by CF will be better on QA because they will really be cracking their own whip due to breaking ground and building their brand, they know how the west is and they know not to give excuses or reasons
yes, we have to let this new form of corporate communism fail
The only reason I don't like this bike being built in China is that it's probably a cost-cutting measure, but at the same time it costs a good 2-3 grand more than its Japanese competitors with KTM service intervals.
Its not camshafts thats the biggest problem of ktm. Its how they handle it, or rather how they put head in sand instead of taking responsibility

Good info - if this is correct, I wonder why KTM is not sending this message out.

I’ve got 33,000 miles on mine and it runs great. It’s a 2020 and I’ve not received a letter yet
I have the 790 adventure 2023/2024 off road addition. I got it back in march this year and I've put just over 6000 miles on it. So far all running great. Plenty of green laning and I love the bike so much 👌🏻

This is by far the best entry level adventure bike, I can say this because I did everything with it: solo and couple traveling, light and heavy offroad.
The engine is superb, comfort is good and no other competitor come even close on electronics.

85tt has so much going for it. If I was not going off-road much, it would be my very first choice. Great looks, character, reliability, easy to maintain yourself and they can be had for a good price for everything you get.
I agree…I have. 23 V85TT.. 12k miles in 10 months…. Just waiting to experience MG unreliability…… nope…. Bike has been bullet proof
No one WANTS chinese bikes. But those that do definitely don't want to pay European prices for Chinese products.
Uhhhwe do actually. China isn’t bombing people. They are building bridges and helping people. They are the future.
Great work Ian! Great review as always & even better intro! lol!!
I have one. 2024 model year. Put Motoz tires on it right away. Side stand sensor went at 5000km, replaced by warranty. No other issues. I plan to replace oil every 5000km. I am now at 10,000km and just did the ORBDR. It performed flawlessly. Happy with my choice.
I keep saying it but people won't listen, the Chinese made bikes don't have the issue. Otherwise the 800mt / ibex would have this problem, they don't
Here is my impression of every 790/890 owner. “Well I put 3,000 miles on my KTM the last 3 years and it’s been perfectly reliable!”
The milage these KTM guys are citing is embarrassing.
LoL so you dont know any your just another internet expert hater boi

The Yamaha T7 is the same price. It has less power but the Japanese reliability makes up for it
Whatever the 790/890s are capable of ... all those reliability issues makes them a no go for me.
T7 worst of all worlds.. too heavy for off-road , too slow for the road
@@Neil-s4x They need to make T7 less top heavy.
Thanks Ian. You’re the best and honest. Keep em coming.
I've had my 2023 CFMOTO 800T for 2 seasons now with zero issues. I'd trust this bike for sure.
I bought one and have enjoyed 5000km problem free this summer. 😎
Only problem i had was the screen that created a lot of buffeting.
Nice job Ian, will you really keep the whole thing moving forward quick with rapidfire knowledgeable Q&A pretty impressive over the years
Spot on review Ian.
When Ducati released the Multistrada and that experience cam failure, they went "yup, we have a problem and we will recall all units...".
lol Ducati is even worse. If you are a motovlogger and talk shit about Ducati you can get sued.
Yeah but bro are any of those bikes “Ready to race??” That’s what’s important here. We have to be ready to race!’
@@IRLtrolls Funny!
Great opener - brilliant! This comment sans any KTM bashing but I do hope they find their way in terms of delivering consistent quality.
I own a 901 and a 2018 FE450. I haven't had an issue with either. That being said, my confidence in the brand going forward has taken a hit. Selling these bikes on the used market may become a challenge. I've seen some bikes of this platform taking price hits or sitting on the used market for extended time periods.
Just put a deposit down on a black one! Pick it up on Monday.... so stoked
Great review and honest evaluation of current issues with quality/reliability. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I have the 790 adventure since july 2023 it has 19000Km and she's amazing litle problems with it, and Ktm solve it. loving my bike and about reliability, well my friend has a t7 and had problems with it, the other one as a voge 900 and 0 problems...
This is cool, detailed and still on spot. I have the 2019 model but I think about changing to the 901 because I like the optic way more.
Stop the BS 3 ktm 500 and each went to 40000km 600H without getting valve adjustment. Ride your bike instead of watching in the mirror. SMH
Fly out to Aussie and I'll let you ride mine for a week.
I put the Nordon 901 suspension on mine...much improved!
NO CHINA FOR ME. iPhone is OK, no other choices. It’s purely economic politics. The less money I give china, the better
GREAT review Ian. Thank you. As you said, ADV bikes are so good there is almost no reason to get a street bike. That said, please give your fun factor rankings of these five bikes assuming that they would get little if any off-road use. Thank you.
Please try reviewing the Kove 800 pro or Kove 450 rally or better still the CF MOTO 800MT-X when it comes out..
Sorry, but you are correct
Were about 10-15k a year across a few bikes people, sure if it'll break we'll find it...lol
Final note, the engine sounds horrible...its marbles in a box, legit biggest complaint
Haha .. exactly I purchased a 23 V85TT to replace my 2013 GSA 90th anniversary….after seeing how momma BMW was cheaping out in the 23 GSA ..all for $30k+. I told my Piaggio dealer , after the first 500 Mike service to “stand by”.. I put 6000 miles on the V85TT in 2 months just waiting to be left stranded… nope… bike was bullet proof , zero mechanical issues aside from a loose rear brake master cylinder..3 minute fix….. from Daytona to Utah and back.. limited highway droning, plenty of 2 lane cruising and a “ respectable” amount of single track in Moab… 10 months later , the V85TT has over 12k miles….. easy/simple at home maintenance as well…
would you pick this KTM one instead the new BMWs 800GS and 900GS as a unique bike for the long term?
Definitely bmw
The dealer SHOULD BE embarrassed by that, that’s nothing to do with the bike and everything to do with them.
I read so many comments like this, so many issues from brand new bikes.
Isn't that insane that I'd feel safer buying second hand bike than brand new one? Seriously, give me used 10kkm+ bike over brand new anyday
Should have asked for a refund on your dealer assembly fee. They should have caught that just pushing it around.
great vid as usual, thank you!
It seems like a very fair price.
Negativity is like a virus, especially with social media. Great comment, wish I could pin this to the top.

Looking forward to an IBX review. Keep up the awesome work.
Dude he has 1,000 miles on his KTM. Let it hit 15-20k and see what happens. Every bit of criticism of KTMs reliability is warranted.
KTM makes good performing machines at the cost of being an overall trash product.
@@IRLtrolls 16085 miles on my 2022 Husqvarna 901 no cam wear , 32000miles on the 1090r i had prior without issue , 36500 on a 690 prior to that without anything out of the ordinary
@@DB-sd3cw what models have you owned with what issues at what miles ??
odd dude i stopped watching him when he sold the 901 with almost no miles on it because he didnt trust it and said his channel was going back to being geared for the beginner then he puts $4000 worth of high end aftermarket suspension on a Honda 750 transalp and then buys a 790 made in china and openly states over and over he did so to break it and prove his hatred for KTM
Light is right! 👍
Same way I'm leaning, debating whether to go see if my dealer can pre-order/reserve an ibex 450 for me for when they start arriving here
I decided against a Chinese motorcycle.
Went through the rear tyre in 1500 miles. Crazy fun.
I do miss hitting the trails though.
this particular model is an absolute beauty
That sounds like a great bike for you. I am on holiday in Italy and there are a lot of new Transalps with owners who look happy driving by.
Thank you.
I have owned a couple Chinese bikes, and they were crap. Knowing the 790 is built there as well, I would RUN away from any bike made in China..
With the bad history of Chineses QC, I was surprised to see BMW having their GS900 motors built in China as well.
@@Interbeing_CDN Down here in Central America, it is a running joke.. "Oh it's made in China" With the understanding that it is CRAP!!
Almost everything you use is either made in China or is chock full of Chinese made components. Like anything no matter where it’s made, what’s important is quality control, and that’s down to the brand.
@@Howling-Mad-Murdock I think it's safe to say the QC at KTM and their affiliates SUCKS!!!!
Amazing review! Best in the world
Great review.
Well done, as usual. Thank you Ian
Very welcome
Let's see what the 990 engine offers as far as reliability concern. From what I've seen they relocated the exhaust CAT which is a good point!
Wow, thanks!
Great review, as always!
"A cruise control button that doesn't work" Yea it is strange especially when you paid for it but what is likely a faulty brake sensor prevents it from working.
hahaha love the opening! 🤣
LOVE THE INTRO!!
