Good story. Nice change from the 'humans outdo everyone else and make it look easy'. My only complaint was the observers didn't help at all. Yes I understand they were testing human endurance. But were they willing to let everyone die in the name of science?
Yes they would! Scientists record and analyse, just like wildlife photographers do not interfere, just photograph the life and death before them. Science doesn't care about feelings just data.
Sad to say, but observers often disassociate and don't realize that they could help. As an example, I watched news from helicopters over the aftermath of Katrina, asking where the help was for the stranded survivors who needed food and water.
The aliens should've just watched hacksaw ridge

This is why you pack a couple of mineral/vitamin tablets and dextros sticks.
Humans are persistence hunters.
Great story! Thanks a lot. I look forward to many more!
I have seen responders after an earthquake digging through the rubble use small adrenaline shots to keep going!
Ah the aliens, the juus
I wonder why the aliens didn't assist with the rescue?
Maybe the observers are really small, or weak?
Because they are observers helping would ruin there results
Wow, fishers, how about fissures ?
Alien, not alian
