Cats are for someone who needs to be needed. Gives, a Little love. Little company. Little entertainment. Little pest control. Little of this an that.
Good story.
Always trust a dog. If your dog doesn't trust someone you know, you shouldn't either. Returning to the states I was hyper alert. Noisy places overloaded me. The drone of a mall would make me collapse. Insomnia, neighbors pulling into the apartments or walking up the stairs, I could hear it all. Like being a bat. Drinking, fighting what ever would distract me. A friend tricked me and stuck me with a really smart dog. Saved my life until I could get my head straight. Even more alert than me. Felt safe, could sleep. Dog on the bed could wake me if anything was wrong. I have more dogs in my home than friends these days. Dogs don't lie, easy to read. Honest. Kid's and wife have all the dogs now. 6 dogs total. 3 are for PTSD and seizures for my wife. My old canine partners are long dead but remembered.
I have a small dog, who stays by your side if you feel ill, have the flu, pain, for whatever reason. She has done it to guests, me, little kids with colds. She knows to comfort people who dont feel the best.
It fits this story.
All dogs, especially working/ service dogs are pack animals who have transferred their pack loyalty to their humans. Also many animals exhibit extra-species altruistic behaviors.
Just imagine if the aliens found out we selectively breed dogs from wolf to get different breeds.
I have a feeling that these aliens would completely lose their minds seeing service dogs in training or actively helping other humans, nit just protecting like good boy Titan. Imagine them learning about seeing eye dogs or special needs therapy dogs
Many “animals “ can and have exhibited loyalty to humans. No explanation fits every human-animal interaction
Dogs; along with many animals; do have a level of sentience, just not as high as ours. Like people, dogs have personalities: some are easy going, some are paranoid, some are sensitive to loud noises, some are friendly to everybody, some are only friendly to certain people; very Human-like. Dogs also have the ability to learn and adapt to new situations without being taught. Dogs are somewhat aware of the passage of time; my parents dog always knew when it was time to take her medicine. Among many other things; dogs are not some dumb meat sack that just barks, though some dogs are an exception lol
Excellent story. No absurdities, no magic super-science, and sufficient backstory to make the characters seem real. Valid starting theory, reasonable opinion change.
The part where the alien called a dog an inferior creature would have made me mad lol
Most non-single celled beings have sentience, but few have sapience.
Wolves from which dog are descended were once man’s most feared enemies. (And still are very dangerous). But we were also very much alike. Both pack animals with social hierarchy’s and most significantly we were both persistence hunters.
We don’t know exactly how it happened but once we started to domesticate them we complimented each other’s strengths and weaknesses and became even more effective hunters. And fortunately the Wolf genome turned out to be extremely malleable.
One last fun fact. The English word Dog has no known origin. It just appears and we can’t find any precursor word it could be derived from, yet at least.
I have always studied the origins of words and phrases and you are exactly right. The word "dog" has no precursor, it just "arrived,". Lol, and thank goodness for it!
but thruout history dogs especially, made life easier and safer. pack animal, pack will die for pack. people have become part of the pack. animals have become more as a result of relationship with people. early in our history, humans died to protect the clan. Socially, humans and dogs click.
Love is not an emotion. Love is acts of service. When you get your head around that you understand the thieves of joy, the perpetrators of harm, the people that hurt others, in the name of love. For example, domestic violence and workplace harrassment.
*Its not just true for dogs* [TLDR at the end], all mammals and many birds are like this, _probably_ also at least some anphibians, but due to size & preferred environmental differences this is much harder to confirm. Also potentially some arachnids, also like sea creatures of various types but again, environmental differences, tho this hasnt prevented such bonds from forming, like divers and certian "fish"[taxanomically meaningless term, if it meant anything then all vertebrates would be fish], sharks, cephalopods, and even the likes of crustaceans and ofc the aforementioned mammals, this time the water types lol.
This is due to the large-scale implementation of team survival strategies and this kind of bond is more prevalent in species that implement methods of reproduction that favor investing in their young. Furthermore this kind of binding is even more common in species that engage in _Alloparenting_ or _alloparental care_ this is the term for when parental duties are or are capable of being considered communal tasks, it can also be considered the act of caring for the young of another, i.e. the young of a different (though often closely related) genetic line. *_In simple terms_* , the animal version of daycare/foster care/adoption, which is quite common among: especially mammals, but also certian birds, "fish", and invertebrates... also maybe microbes but lets not get into that. In some species its even been observed in at least some species that alloparenting is not exclusive to those within the same species, or even closely related species. Ravens will help parent wolf cubs and wild dogs and cats will get all over. Also stories of wild animals being protective and caring towards human young are not unheard-of (I even have my own since im an avid outdoorsperson) and are often at least partially true. There are countless others but you get the idea and this already a novel of a comment. So:
*TLDR* :
On a planet that runs on team strats having a diverse party makeup just makes sense.
[Also im a dyslexic on mobile so dont crucify me]
Edited to add: I did not include active symbiosis because that's more biological than behavioral so likely isn't earth specific/exclusive
Also, believe it or not im not a redditor, tho im a stoned ADHD aspie who's also on my adhd meds, so i might as well be
Whomever said pets - particularly dogs and cats - aren't sapient?
Dogs are better then humans in all the ways that truly count. People have ego they suffer jealousy and bias dogs don't they are simply better then people. They don't destroy their environment they live in love and loyalty.
Humans format a symbiotic relationship with our dogs.
That man needs to find a safer park 😅
I would not describe myself as religious, but I do believe in Dog.
The AI does not understand timing, or inflection.
Pack mentality
Exactly, dogs see us humans as part of their pack
