I feel the same about this game, it feels like they targeted not the right players with this game, as the cult and quest aspects recieved a lot more love than the roguelite aspects. You can just see it by looking at the two upgrade trees.

In the current state it is one and done, maybe second run trying to do dungeons out of order to see if dialogues change, definitely easy co sidering that by the time i beat Leashy i could access 3 remaining areas

I think stray did a pretty good job on what it's trying to be, it not really that good but I don't think it was trying to be Fantastic. I personally thought its pretty good but not as good as people claimed it is.

However it's a good "Baby's first rougelike"

Honestly I'd put it in a solid 7.5/10 in rouguelikes, at least this one doesn't punish you for NOT picking up things (like enter the gungeon) like, I never got why that had to be a mechanic
@@dnidaz2553 you should always pick up keys and shields anyway, health is never stolen from you.
Also the ammo drops are stolen because this game has a lot of cool guns, and they want you to use them instead of trying to get through everything with your starting gun until you have guaranteed refill.
@@NikoFromOneShot the starting gun has infinite ammo, and also, with any luck you could get 2 guns per floor, which is not something to write home about, and also, FUCK THAT ANOYING RAT
It's unfortunate that the combat never got the same love as the base building. Good for a single playthrough.

I felt like the balance between dungeoning and culting was really good I just hope the dungeons get a little more love through DLC or free updates, like SUPER CRUSADES or new weapons or something like that, i just hope that because the have a roadmap option in the menu a big content update will come that helps out the dungeons more than the city- er.. I mean cult builder aspect, I wasn't really disappointed when I got it but i was a little sad. (Kinda edit: I know that basically what foekoe said in the vid it's just I'm feeling/felt when I played the game, also hammers are cool don't @ me)

Idk, I’m not really against there being a “rogue-lite” sub genre. I personally love games like Risk of Rain and Isaac, but I can empathize with those who are new to the genre and find it difficult getting into them with the tons of items where sometimes (especially with Isaac) you have to either ask the internet or slowly learn by pouring hours into the game to figure out what each item does. I can see how someone would appreciate this game as a sort of introduction to rogue-likes as opposed to just being immediately overwhelmed when jumping into games that have so much content. Otherwise, I agree on pretty much everything else
Yea thats why most new players should play with external item descriptions, also RoR is a pretty bad example, because every single item is beneficial to you, while also telling you what it does

My introduction to rougelites was Isaac and I dont find it overwhelming. Granted, the first mods I downloaded was the item description mod. The sheer amount of time to unlock stuff and beat routes are far apart from each other enough that I dont really feel overwhelmed. Your thrown in a room, here are the instructions, goodluck.
anytime someone says a roguelike is too easy and compares it to other, harder roguelikes I just figure that means I'll enjoy it because I like 'em easier.
Updates and dlcs have endless possibilities, they can add new upgrades, weapons and more land and buildings
The amazing thing with indie devs is, they can do anything they want
With them it's not about paying the hundreds to thousands of people who work on the game, it's about having fun and goof since most times, at most there are 20 people working on the game or atleast 1 guy with a dream
They are still constrained by the budget and time.

@@Randomyoutuber-4831 i mean... i dont find the binding of issac fun but i find cult of the lamb fun lol 😭issac has so much going on on screen and its way more punishing. it was too complicated and difficult for me so i ended up just putting it down about a year ago and never picked it back up. meanwhile i literally get excited to come home and play cotl every day. its my little treat i love it so mcuh

As someone who loves this game a lot, I kind of agree with the roguelite aspect being undercooked. But the base building aspect makes my brain go brrr, so it’s definitely worth the price of admission. Hoping for DLC to give this game even more meat on it’s bones.
Oh for sure. Let me just say I have over like 30+ hours in the game so far and 80% of that time playing was just me managing my cult than doing the battling.

The way I describe the game to people is as:
“…a base-building, resource-management, mini-game-fest… with a roguelite attached.”
Glad to see I wasn’t alone in this sentiment.
note: they're also planning to update the game with more content once they fix the current bugs, i'm extremely excited to see what they have planned next and i really hope they flesh out the roguelike part of it more! this game oozes charm and love and i'm excited to see what massive monster is gonna do with it in the future

Fair review! I feel like with it's success, a lot of the missed potential here can be fixed ( I hope) with constant updates, new maps, weapons, base expansions etc.

I believe if they added more diversity of weapons, curses, and maybe new things, and mechanics to the roguelite aspect it would be improved by a ton
The Graphics / look of the game is personally my favorite part of the game.
Great review. I had trouble organizing all my thoughts about this game, but this review pretty much said them all in a very concise manner.
Honestly this is just why I love Foekoe's content. Whatever review he makes is just perfect, I felt exactly this way when playing cult of the lamb, and it's reassuring to know that whatever review he makes will almost always be completely accurate for the game.

Honestly, I’m fine with simple roguelikes, for example, 20 Minutes ‘till Dawn, but Cult of the Lamb didn’t have something that really drew me to it.

I can see how base building is the best part of the game. Like I got all the crusade upgrades and I didn't even finish the second big boss.

What if you need villagers to craft gems to install on dungeon entrances which adds modifiers. Once completed you can fight the big boss in the dungeon.

My favorite quest so far was when my cat follower decided it would be funny if we pranked a deer follower by making them eat poop. A few days later, poo eater turned on me, and I sent them to prison.

You’re right, imagine if someone actually add more a chaotic battling system & added more things to do at your base that gave you different playing styles & story beats.

I think that there's something we have to remember, cult of the lamb is not just a rogue like, is a city simulator game TOO. So i think is kinda unfair comparing it to other roguelikes like tboi (one of my favorite games of all time) that are, only, roguelikes. The team of COTL had to basically make 2 games and manage to connect both into one. That's FUCKING hard, specially to a small dev team.

I finished this game yesterday and I do have to agree with a lot of the points made in the video - I was definitely expecting a more challenging roguelike experience, but as you said... it IS roguelite. Either way, I had a lot of fun building a town and taking care of everyone while also going out on little resource hunts. It did take me back to when I played don't starve all the time - build a nice little base, go out for more materials, then return to your base and improve it. Thanks for the video by the way! I always love seeing the art you make for the thumbnails, even more so when it's of a game I know about. Keep up the good work Foe

I love the game, but I honestly wish it had more lore. I Get the protagonist is supposed to be something that you can project yourself on, but the character has a backstory of their own, one that's really interesting and could make for a good story however they just.. never mention it past the introduction? I was hoping when they added relics of the old faith, they would have some lamb-related artifact, but no. Even just one scene where they look at something sheep related, like a small statue on the ground or even something bigger like a crumbled sheep city or home and they change their expression for 2 frames would add so much to the character but they just.
Don't.
They don't share WHY it doesn't bother them, or why lamb related items are rare. It's not like the bishops burned all sheep related items after the genocide and, even if they did, it's never said or implied. I hope they add something like this in the next up and coming content update. Their entire race is dead, and they just don't care.

If they made it so that your cultists could help you while in battle it would bridge the connection between roguelike and base construction a lot better, but there’s a reason why few games don’t do that. It’s really freaking hard to balance it gamewise. What could be better at tackling down demonic entities but with the power of friendship?

Yep, bought it when the game came out , perfected the game over the past week, and now I’ll probably be done until they add something or I share the game with a friend. I was also really expecting more attention the crusades/rougelike aspect and replay value.
That said, still super happy with the purchase, thought it was a great game, not exactly what I was expecting, but I had more fun in the 20 hours I played it than I’ll have in 100 hours of other games. It is an incredibly fun and enjoyable game to play.
Tbh I loved it. I’ve really never minded repetitive gameplay much so it’s perfect for me

I put off watching this review until after I beat it and I somewhat agree. But I think the shallowness of both the crusading and the attention to upkeep for your followers was sort of nice. When I got frustrated because I couldn't beat a boss, I just stayed and helped around the town to cool off, expanded a bit. I enjoy that I didn't feel rushed to beat it, it wasn't an 'end of the world' plot, you can take your sweet sweet time.

I personally liked how chillax the rougelite sections are. I'm kinda tired of pouring hours into rougelites/likes and not feeling like I've made much progress. Which I understand, learning is apart of the fun for some people. I'm just not one of those people. But I am excited to see how they add more meat to the formula

I really liked this game! Yeah sure, the fighting could of been better, and the ending could of been improved a lot, but it felt really good to play! Loved it! And I really liked the cult aspect of the game!
Its a very campy game, i love its atmosphere and while i agree its not nearly as chaotic with build crafting as many other roguelites, i think with time it will shape up to being great in its own way.

Cult of the Lamb is just like the Eidolon Mod for Minecraft. Incredible animations and textures, cool concept and O.K. execution. But the biggest part is, THE ARE STILL IN *ALPHA STAGE!*

I think what your saying is true for the most part, I haven't played the game yet, but I will say give it time. A lot of the other big roguelikes you talked about in this video had a lot of time to develop and add new content. So give it time.

I like this game very much and i agree with you.
I finished cult of the lamb yesterday, and yes, it's no hades or underminer, but I enjoyed it because, while simple, is just really comfortable. I agree with everything you said, and personally really hope that a DLC or expansion comes where one can explore different lands, fight other cults and make the dungeons more complex because it really does feel like the cult building was the main priority. Still, I love f***ed up animal crossing and am excited for more to come from Massive Monster.
