I guess they do try and make the worst possible scenarios, dark skin against bright background, low light... It's just the nature of the tests I guess and not a real world scenario. Anyone would change the composition to find a better and more pleasing angle/light

@@namelesssnitchyNot really, HDR can be enabled with eye AF, but not in portrait mode (at least with the older version). That's why the background was blown out. What made it worse is indeed Marques skin tone which Xperia has not optimised for. That said, even flagships from Apple and Samsung including Chinese brands struggled with his skin tones, with only the Pixel properly handling the situation. It's not unexpected given how Google bragged about their "Real Tone".

I've heard from RUclipsrs, who have actually thoroughly tested the device, that there is quite a difference between the basic mode and the proper auto mode, with the latter apparently being much better. In addition, I've heard that HDR is disabled by default, which would explain some bad shots. So many reviewers are like "well, there's the basic mode, the equivalent of a point and shoot mode on other devices, and a couple of complicated manual modes. Let's compare the photos with the iPhone ... Erm, the iPhone is better, you're better of with it."
It appears they don't bither to properly test the Xperia devices because they aren't as popular, which is a shame.
Anyway, keep up the great work as one of the people on RUclips doing Xperias justice. Regards from Germany.

Appreciate that thank you ☺️ in all fairness, like I said in the video Sony should make it less awkward for new users and make 2 camera apps, one which will fare just like the Samsung's and apples of the world with dumb full auto / processed HDR and can be used at the click of a finger and a second app aimed at enthusiasts which would basically photo pro app minus the basic mode. Would make things soooo much easier and less complicated for people who just want to take day to day photos like 90% of people.

I purchased the phone recently, used Basic and Auto and Manual modes on the phone app. Actually lost hours trying to actually learn to use the camera. When I'm outside the camera is very good, 9/10. I had a Zenfone 7 pro and I can say I didn't really feel the difference, in fact I actually perceive it as a downgrade, not on just camera, but phone overall. I want to like Sony, but I'm tired of it. It's just not a phone for me, I just can't understand how it works, idk maybe I'm dumb. For my day to day use 21:9 is awful on youtube. Sony is very good on audio thou. I can't feel the 4K display, but I can feel the creator mode display mode. And yeah, I use Android 14.
I will return the phone in a couple of days and return to my old Asus. I wanted to like this phone, on paper is very good, but dammit I just cannot use it as a daily.
PS: No it's not the colors of the photos, I really like the colors and I'm a big fan of real life colors. It's just ... the photos are really weird inside. Outside they are nice. I think there is some overall clarity of the photo that my eye is used to. And let's be honest, I would like some AI on the camera because it's a wide lens not a normal 50mm, at least fake it a little.

I see where you coming from and from what I've seen, a lot of people could do with a separate app for those who just want a good result without having to delve into the complex manual mode, a bit like the apple camera app where "it just works" .
Now when it comes to the manual modes that's where to me the Sony shines. Coming from years of using DSLR cameras the interface and menus is like second nature and where the sensors really shine as you can really push the end result. I made a video (in fact my very first video) going in depth about what all the menus do and the concept of photography talking about the interactions between shutter speeds and iso. Give it a watch, it's fairly long but like I said "in depth". Hope it helps 👍

While I believe I understand what you wanted to say (and as a fellow photographer, I agree with most things you said here), I believe it was a great test since 99.9% of people are using their phone cameras this way - point and shoot. And it doesn't matter if you have a RAW option, better color science etc, the idea here is to see which phones take photos that most people like and are happy with them. Yes, they are mostly over saturated, over exposed and sometimes too sharp, but that's irrelevant here.

The thing is, phones now are so capable that they have their own color science, processing, etc.
Some know how to do it, others go for too much. That doesn't mean one or the other is bad, that's a matter of taste after all
The tricky thing is first, that big reviewers can't be called reviewers when they test a phone according to what they know/want, instead of checking if the phone does what it's advertised for.
Then, I'm not saying I'm a Sony camera phone master, but I've never got such a bad picture like the one that looked bad, even point and shoot is great in my opinion. And I just switched from a 13 Pro (that doesn't rank well either in these types of scenarios), that a lot considered to be along the best shooter.

I very much agree with you, it's all about taste, it would be like comparing a Fuji and a Sony camera, they both have their fanbase and have very different ways of interpreting colours ! It all comes down to use case and taste. In terms of reviews it's very hard to not fall into the "niche market" if you go too in depth when you talk about these things and that's definitely not something a channel like MKBHD would want, they want to appeal to the wide audience, who as we know, just want that bright saturated image, but yes I absolutely get what you mean 👍

@@UpsideLens It's when you try to be superman when it's ok to be just a normal strong man. Phones now are 100% better than phones in 2008. My photos of my Sony C905 still look authentic and so much character without any added sharpening. People mostly consume content through small 6" screens because if those people watched the same photos in large screens, like I'm doing 99% 1.5m away from my 55" 4K TV using my PC, those photos are laughable to say the least. And then iPhone when shooting RAW it looks really good but why there is no option for authentic photography?

Sony did pretty good in Versus channel video released 4 weeks ago and Asus phone won the competition. It was a blind test too. In iphones AI brightens up everything to a similar level making the image look really flat.

Another perspective to look at this is that, the target audience for Xperia are never the same as how other phones manufacturer does, especially how the company push the product through ads and reviewer hands on. (at least not in my country in terms of it's exposure). In fact, they doesn't purposely shift the direction to cater the majority market, just like a lone wolf with their own thought.
Those who had experience with Sony alpha camera, definitely could jump in right away with the so-called "recognizable" camera UI. Shot in auto mode is an option, the manual mode is where you see this beast start shining, and also where the price goes. Not a professional myself but from a hobbyist point of view, photo taking nowadays with AI can be convenience, also at the same times interfering. It is great if the backlight lays directly on the camera lens, yet some phone camera still able to tone down the light with the help of AI. Sony probably doesn't, and that's where it reminds you to move the position. (learn to photograph)
Agree with not all eye candy color make the best photo, but I guess it could be subjective things. What's so cool about this is raw photo capture, and the ability to edit it afterward is insane, giving user more freedom to play with, hence making it a mirrorless alternative in pocket size.

Better basic auto mode would be nice (even if another app), but I was never expecting the Xperia to smash this challenge. It is not focused on point and shoot.
I was more surprised how the Xiaomi 13 Ultra went so bad (2nd last judt above the Xperia) despite being touted as a point and shoot camera focused phone.

See that's what I would like Sony to improve in their next iteration, a more simple and novice friendly app that just works, without having to worry about "Sony colours" give the people that processed look they're after and desperate for and the photo pro app for the enthusiast keeping it as natural as it currently is. That's my wish anyway.

I explained at length in my other video about my wishlist for the Xperia 1 VI go watch it it'll make sense. They need to have 2 photo apps, not just one trying to do a bit of everything and confusing everyone in the process and ending up being clunky. 1 photo app for noobs and the everyday shots that gives that over the top processing, and a 2nd PRO photo app that takes the best features of the current app and adds even more much needed features (zebras, bulb mode, bracketing...) Whilst giving the least amount of processing to the raw files.

Yep absolutely that and that's where Sony is missing the trick, by also catering for this crowd (which is 90% of people basically) they would open up their phones to the masses and it wouldn't take much !
