  • Not sure if the curb I chose is too high or if I just need to keep waxing and grinding it down a bit before I can actually slappy it, but I'll keep after it none the less. Shane, the ball is back in your court.

      Thank you for tuning in for so long and thank you for the reminder about jumping and ollieing being equivalent. You are so right.

    I'm 42, bought a good skateboard about a year ago. Liked the idea of being able to ride it, but haven't been out on it yet. Too self-conscious and worried about what people will think of someone my age trying to just keep his balance on this thing. It's stupid, but a hindrance nonetheless. Maybe your dedication is what will get me started.

      Yeah man, you just gotta get out there and give it a go. I'll be honest, I was a bit nervous about working the slappies at a street spot with people walking by and then i remembered how much I used to do this in Brooklyn. After the initial sheepishness wears off I was more focused on the trick than anyone around me. Just needed to watch out for cars.

      Back when I skated in the 80’s it was for campus transportation and I never even learned to Ollie. Now I’m 54 and have been at it for a little over a year and am just starting to land kickflips every once in a while. The embarrassment can be real especially if you have to go to work and explain why you’re on crutches... yeah, that happened but I just owned it and took it as a badge of honor. Bottom line is I love it. I also used to skate down to the local school after dark and practice so I wouldn’t have to worry about people watching me. Cops stopped to check me out a couple of times but they’re pretty chill to a 50 year old in a helmet and pads learning to skate. Get a helmet and pads and go for it! Oh and wrist guards were a great investment for me. Really boosts my confidence when I can worry less about getting hurt.

      When starting out I would suggest you find a big parking lot to just roll around and get comfortable on the board, doing tic-tacs and kickturns. Just the back of the lot where there's little traffic and not many people staring. It's fun and good exercise.

      East Orange? I dig that park man, lot's of obstacles and a little something for everybody. Still not crazy about metal ramps but it's better than nothing and there are enough smaller obstacles that I don't have to go too big with the metal transition.

    Enjoying the videos. I just got back into skateboarding after a 20+ year break (42 yr old), not that I was great back then. My nephew and daughter brought me back. About a month in and I've landed a kickflip. I get sore in my upper front thigh area just from doing ollies. I'm a pretty fit guy and a runner but I'm using muscle I don't usually use I guess. Anyway keep the videos coming I'm hoping to share some in the future myself.

    Those 50-50s on the box are starting to look real solid. good work, keep it up

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Jacob, Yeah, I decided instead of getting fancy on the box, I would try and get my 50-50's more solid, with some speed, and to start working on popping out of them if possible as opposed to just rolling off the end. I've been getting a lot of comments about running before I know how to walk and so I've been trying to honor that mentality by working more on ollieing things and basic core techniques more than new tricks.

    • @jacob-spring
      @jacob-spring 3 года назад +2

      @@BenJaegerThomas Sounds like a good plan. Get some of the basics down so you can do those tricks 100% Would be a lot more rewarding instead of chasing new tricks and getting everything 50%

    as usual, incredible skating!

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад

      Thanks Hunter. I'll be honest I wasn't feeling like skating on this day but I knew if I got myself out the door i'd be able to pull it together. Was feeling a bit defeated at the first skatepark but i pushed through it and deciding to leave was also helpful. My surroundings weren't helping me out at all with all the leaf blowers. I'm a bit sore today but happy with the session and happy that i focused on my ollies as well as trying to pop-out of the 50-50's. I didn't really get to where I wanted to with the 50-50's but I was very happy with the height I was starting to get on those ollies over the hip.

    I'm jealous... the are no painted curbs here in Germany...

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, they aren't really well maintained so I think I'm going to hit it a couple of times with some spray laquer and maybe even another coating of paint or two when I can. Might have to build that curb up over time. Might be a DIY project for you.

    Good to see the 50/50s with more speed and you landing some.
    I am wondering if you did something with the ads. I noticed there were the little yellow dots that mean ads in this video but they haven't been in other videos. The ads seemed to appear randomly in other videos lately. It was more annoying that way. It seems in this video you plan for them to hit at natural transitions between scenes. That was a lot nicer then when they were hitting randomly

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад +1

      Hey Brenda, thanks on the 50-50's. Unfortunately with ads I have no control where they land, and also some of the user agreements in regards to ads just changed for youtube content creators so they are adding more ads overall, i think? I don't know, my mind has been more focused on career stuff and home improvement than youtube analytics. This is more just something I do for fun. I don't get all into the numbers like some folks do, trying to figure out what content hits ore than others. I just skate and edit and post and reply to comments. It works for me. Sorry if the ads get annoying. Tends to be the nature of the beast. Free platforms need a way to keep revenue streams coming in.

      @@BenJaegerThomas I wasn't trying to get on your case. I wasn't trying to complain about having ads. I am sorry if you thought I was. I only mentioned about ads being annoying because I thought you had done something to fix it. The placement was better in this video
      I thought maybe you had done something with the ads because I saw the yellow dots in this video. So I was trying to give you a compliment on what I thought you were doing. I thought that creators could choose at what point they wanted ads to appear. I thought that was what the yellow dots signified.
      I was assuming in previous videos you were letting RUclips do it and in this video you were doing it yourself. But I guess you weren't. Maybe RUclips's algorithm is getting better and they are seeing your black screen as a time to put in an ad. so then I would suggest maybe leaving the black screen on a second longer because it could make it so we don't see the screen.
      Yes I have heard that now RUclips is going to be putting in more ads. Also that people that don't have monetize channels are going to get ads added!
      How I actually watch videos is to watch them normally on my main account and like the video. Then I switch to this account and leave the video playing in the background so you can get view time while I am reading the comments.
      Yes real life is more important than trying to figure out RUclips analytics

      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад +1

      Well thanks man, I appreciate you following along and reaching out. I currently ride an 8.25” deck from Vu skateshop in Baltimore. It’s one of their decks I picked up over a year ago (reminds me that I might need to do a new set-up.) I have bones 52mm STF version 5 wheels that I just dug back out of my stash of used wheels because they are smaller than most of my other wheels and I was working on kickflips. After 5ish years of skating I finally delegated my Indy trucks to my cruiser set-up and purchased a set of thunder hollows in august and have been riding those on my current set-up. The bearings are a set of ceramic bearings I got online from a company called Breeze. I’ll say that they don’t feel all that fast but the price was unbeatable, so there you go.
