Oh boy Aaron. First off what a great video for always check your brakes and bearings. I was raised on my dad doing this every year on the Campers and boat trailers. He had to chip a race off a camper spindle in 100 degree heat once. Never again. Timken bearings!!! A thousand times yes without a second thought. We even rebuild our hubs on the vette that sees racing duty with Timken parts. Have used them for all our offroad jeeps for years. Totally worth the slight cost over the cheap stuff. I was holding my breath when you said you didn't have races and the rear seal was not looking too hot. Again watching you there is no wasted motion. Great video and great job sir!! A perfect video on why you carry spare parts and tools if one can. This stuff never seems to break in town or near anyone with the right parts in stock!! So good to see Tina and Maggie. Wonderful video work Tina!! - Paul & Julie

Tina says thanks :) She was my understudy for the day but dont tell her that LOL
My favorite bearing story is.. one day a good friend of mine showed up at my house just about dark and asked if I could look at his truck. The front right wheel was making a funny noise as he drove. Out at the driveway, and I kid you not even one little bit, I walked around the front of the truck and all I could see was the end of the spindle, where the little hub cap would be, and it was just a red ball. The bearing was fully seized on the spindle and no way to get it off. Cutting torch, sledge hammerand a lot of cussing later and we got it apart. I as shocked he didnt have a fire.

Good job! Good advice, my DRV 38RSSA are oil bath and as part of my pre trip inspection I check for leaks around the rear as well as the front sealed caps. They all leak some and it’s not hard to tell when they need replacing Some people replace the seals every 2 years, some only when they start to leak. I change them out when I notice more than normal leakage. A few drops or more will causes a dry stream to form. Nonetheless oil gets changed every 20,000 miles or every 2 years. A couple of spare parts is never a bad idea thanks for the advice! Glad you guys are safe and well, God Bless and safe travels 🙏🏽

You did a great job. If you'd had to, you probably could have just removed the wheel and limped to a repair shop using only 2 tires on that side, maybe shifting weight inside the coach/storage to the side with 3 tires, and/or toward the front to move some weight from the wheels to the hitch, to help a little too.
In 2001, a wheel bearing went out on the trailer behind our safari vehicle in the middle of nowhere in Zambia. Of course the safari company had spare bearings, and the guides were half-decent mechanics. While the rest of the tourists (including my two young teens) took a walk, the more mechanically inclined guide and I replaced the bearing, and the other guide was our gofer for tools and lookout for wildlife.
In the late 1970s while studying mechanical engineering, Timken provided our entire mechanical design class with a bearing selection book which of course included a catalog with specs for all their bearings. Their tapered roller bearings really are top-notch bearings. I reconfirmed that after I started having front left bearing problems in a 2003 Olds minivan. Mechanics all swore they replaced it with the genuine GM part, or a "great made in USA part", but in fact all probably used $35 Chinese crap off ebay. Finally I bought the Timkens myself in their hologram-sealed orange boxes, and replaced them myself. No more bearing problems! I kicked myself for not having done that the first time.
They are easily worth what they cost, about 4x the price of the cheapest bearing that looks fine but is inferior. For anyone who doesn't do the labor themselves, and even if you buy and provide the part yourself to a mechanic, I'd advise not taking your eyes off the Timken bearing from the minute the box is unsealed, until you drive the vehicle away repaired. They are like gold, and a shady mechanic will swap it for a cheap one like a magician replacing your Rolex with a TImes, the second you're not watching.

Oh man, I am so gald you shared all that awesome info. I agree with 100% of what you siad. If a bearing from over the pond is $9.99 on Amazon and the Timkin is $20 that should tell you somethign about quality. :) Safe Travels

Destroyed the back bumper putting the trailer on the flatbed.(took vidoe of the whole ordeal) Insurance reimbursed! Dragged the trailer for 15 yards while putting it on the flatbed 😬 Luckily a garage mechanic was at trailer craft a d overheard everything a d fixed ours with a new axle in 2 days! Did I mention Alaka hotels get very hot when it's 93 degrees out.

I like this video. Good content and some great tips. An extra bearing set is excellent advice. You didn't mention it in this video, but those heavy duty battery impact wrenches should be considered for anyone who would replace a tire/rim, or for that someone who may be kind enough to do it for them. In my wrench case, I ensure I include the correct size deep impact-tough sockets for all wheels on all vehicles.

Yep your comments of “I should of done it my self”. Exactly what Troy said when we were in Indiana and found a bad bearing…Aaron do you check your axels with a laser? Or solely depend on the tpms for temperature monitoring? Also what made you check it? Was tire leaning?

    • @JonesN2Travel
      @JonesN2Travel  2 года назад

I do check them with the laser thermometer on occasion. When I turned into the area where we stopped I noticed, in the mirror, a slight wobble in the tire. Once we parked it was much worse. We were just lucky that it happend soon before we stopped. Safe Travels

Great video! Had the same thing happen to our rv. You got lucky, you have disc brakes and the caliper held the hub on the axle. Mine was drum brakes and the wheel got ejected from rv and I had some minor body damage and the axle had to be replaced. I had stopped less than 10 miles before it happened to fill up with fuel and walked around and felt all the tires and there was any signs the tire was crooked or grease running out of hub cap. The alarm temp on the wheel that fell off didnt go off until I was walking down the road to find it. The air temp of the tire didnt go up until after the damage was done. I hope you made it to your next stop without the other wheel bearing going bad on the wheel you saw a little grease on.

    Check more often
    Consider upgraded suspension systems
Look at prepacking the bearings and store in sealed container,if you get a emergency install they are ready to go .
After installing, and some miles on new bearings, recheck while they are hot and see if they tighten up or not
A good drop sheet would be an essential item for working on the sand
And also check your brakes are not binding causing extra heat build up ,as this can force the seals to let grease out and also spatter on the brake disc.
Use a digital thermometer tool to check randomly your hubs and brakes
But you did well with what you had and you know what your doing ,many don't .

Aaron, wow talk about the good Lord watching out for you guys. Will be ordering Dexter axles except I'm putting oil bathed bearings like on commercial trailers. That way I can always look at the bearing and you can never over grease them.
We have had to replace the whole hub, races and the spindle once on a semi trailer. The ironic thing is we drove over a thousand miles with just grease packed into the hub because someone busted the sight glass. But we got the load delivered.

@@JonesN2Travel True, but I think they will be lower maintenance in the long run. Commercial trailers run thousands of miles before we do any major maintenance on them.

Perfect example of why men should know how to do some of this mechanical stuff. It’s not hard, just messy but very important. I’m not sure what caused your failure but I’m not a fan of buddy bearings because just shooting grease into here without inspecting them you could miss a problem.

I just saw your video now - and I wanna thank you very much for (in my case) reminding those of us with campers to have a spare set (or three) of bearings etc., when the time may come where it's necessary to change them out.. I literally just made a shopping list for bearings, seals and races for our Fuzion. How long have you had your coach? And (roughly) how many miles have you put on it? I've watched many of your videos and I want to offer my sympathy for all the troubles that have befallen you over the last year or so..
