Took a while to find this video, but am i ever glad I did. Most of the other RUclipsrs teaching mandolin barely mention the upstroke in their beginner lessons . One very popular guy mentions it as an aside in LESSON 2!!! Where he says something like "and you can throw in an upstroke here to fill out the measure," or something to that effect. At that point beginner says "Huh?!?!?". Thank you sir for the thorough explanation.

Thank you! I was working on Buffalo Gals, having trouble getting up to tempo with the upstrokes. After I watched this video I played it nearly perfectly

I’ve been teaching the same concept for over 40 years at Elderly Instruments, Lansing Community College, and in my home studio in the Lansing Michigan area. I’d like to add using the metronome to this approach. I encourage students to move with the metronome before touching a string with the pick. Be a head banger. Nod your head to the floor on the beat, and bring it back upwards on &. Get your whole body in sync with the beat. Then, start moving your right hand with the rest of your body.
Next, for ghosting. Have metronome only clicking on 1 & 3 beat. Then only clicking on 1. Then, to get groovy, have it set to click on 2 & 4.
Again, it’s critical to sync your body with the desired accented beats for the style of music you are working towards playing.
