This really helped me to ditch some old bad habits. I'm really working on it.
    Thanks Emma.

That’s good to hear! Getting rid of old habits can be a tough job, but it’s a very rewarding one!

Haha, I wish I'd seen this six months ago - I've just spent months totally rewiring my brain to shift 30yrs of pick technique and this clearly surmises pretty much everything I learned over that time.

Wow! That’s hard work! One of the hardest things to do is to overcome old habits-but it can be done and is so rewarding when you start making progress! That’s awesome!

I've been playing for almost a year now, and still seem to struggle with the pic hold . So thank you for this video. I am completely blind, so part of it was a little difficult, when you mentioned to fold your fingers like this, or put your fingers here, but I do think I learned something.

Thanks for posting this. I have been playing for about 2 weeks. It has puzzled me that trying to control the pick is something I have to work on. It seems like it should be a natural thing but I haven’t found this to be the case. I have gotten downstrokes under control but am still having trouble with upstrokes. I have no problem when I strum up and down with my finger but as soon as I add a pick I lose control.

Thank you! Yes, it is harder than you think it should be!

Beginner mandolin would be great. I'm right handed but due to a finger injury I have no choice but to play left handed and it's a total different feel

Nicely detailed and informative, thanks. Off topic, but do you do any songs on mandola? I know you have a number of tunes posted on octave mandolin, and those are beautiful. I've been playing mandolin for about two years, and added a mandola to the mix several months ago and really love its tone, but its tough to find many mandola recordings on RUclips.

Thank you! That’s so awesome! I’ve played a mandala before, and it really does have a beautiful tone. However I don’t own one sadly. If I did, I would certainly use it!

Thanks so much for this detailed explanation. May I ask what mandolin you're playing with? Thank you!

Emma, How many picks did you experiment with until you settled on the Blue Chip. And what specific model Blue Chip is it? Thank you!

I experimented with a few different ones before finding Blue Chip. My teacher used a Blue Chip pick, and she recommended it to me! Mine just says “-CT- 55” on it.
