Oh man... I didn't know Oda suffered from Gout. My late grandfather did as well, and it's an extremely painful form of Arthritis. Praying for Oda right now. Not just for One Piece but as a human being. One Piece could be biweekly. It could help him.
It doesn’t fall squarely on Shueisha to give Oda a break. The real question is, “Will Oda actually take a break?” This man was still working on One Piece in the hospital at one point and he’s not particularly a digital, so I doubt he was using a tablet or anything back then. I think that’s what makes it really scary. Sometimes (or just with some artists), there’s an infatigable drive to keep going despite the risks. It could be for so many various reasons. I totally understand that drive myself, though I haven’t done nearly as much as he has. But like I said, that understanding is what makes it more scary for me. Same for Togashi.
I feel like one piece is gonna experience a similar fate to bleach as the anime ended due to Kubos declining health at the time and the manga being rushed but then recently came back with the TYBW anime and the hell arc. So I feel as if Oda is gonna suffer the same fate as Tite kubo, but who knows
I doubt it. Kubo didn't get axed because of health issues, he got axed because of conflicts with his editor and magazine. Oda has a lot of money and a large team, he genuinely doesn't need to overwork himself on One Piece, but he is obsessed with working on it. I don't see him rushing it, or taking a long hiatus. He is 47yo with diabetes. He knows he won't live long. One Piece is his life's work, and he is likely more scared than anyone that he will die before finishing it. So he won't stop working.
This man works day in and day out, delivering Chapter after Chapter every week for over 25 years. Oda well deserves his break, however long he needs to.
Oda can take as long as a break as he wants, the man literally has been working on One Piece for decades. Prayers for Oda-sensei all the way to Japan. 🙏
Weekly releases are possible, but not the way they're doing them with one guy basically handling most of the work. They need to start having teams of writers and artists to pull this off, sometimes multiple artists per chapter. They make more than enough money to afford that and it'd really help with longevity so authors don't keep having grave illnesses from their intense schedules
Gout? Goddammit. I'm just a few years younger than Sensei- and I've been having Gout flare ups since 2019, but it really got so bad for me last year. How bad? If a pillow or blanket so much as touches the part of your body that's swelling from Gout (usually feel or hand) the pain is akin to having your bones broken. My bathroom is just a few feet away from Mt bedroom - there were times I literally had to crawl to get there. If he has Gout- in addition to everything else. That's really bad. I seriously doubt 2 weeks will cut it. 😢
I might be wrong but right now he's got a rythm of 2 straight weeks with a achapter and a break after that. Plus other breaks. So he's doing about 30 chapters a year. Fully expect him to go down to 25 or even 20 chapters a year. That's why they've probably started with redoing the old arcs for the anime. That way they don't run into the problem that the anime catches up to the manga.
we're seeing how Tabata is doing in Jump GIGA after a year (very very well i might add), i'd love Oda to move to GIGA as well, but happy hell has an iron grasp on him.
Fuck man… this is probably the beginning of the end. Elbaf might unironically be the last arc oda gets to write. I know it’s early and we don’t have the full picture, but I would be so devastated. I know his editors know where to take the story from here, but it won’t be the same…
I am of the mind that One Piece should become monthly. Oda's health, the complexity of the final saga, him being involved in the live action and the anime... doing all of that while doing a weekly manga is insane.
The reason why Oda works so much, is likely because he is worried that with all his health issues, he may die young and leave it unfinished. It's his life work, so obviously wants to see it done. Making it monthly would basically double or even quadruple the amount of years he needs to invest in the story.
@davidgreen5994 The amount of breaks he needs to take are already doing that, but since his work schedule doesn't change, he can't take care of his health. It's the worst of both worlds. Making it monthly, but increasing the page count a bit, could actually make the story go by faster, since more events could happen each chapter.
I totally agree with the idea of keeping the magazine weekly but not the individual manga in it. I’ve said before this would also solve the problem of good manga getting dropped just because they aren’t in the top 20. I’d much rather see 40 titles rotated bi-weekly or even 80 titles rotated monthly with a different 20 each week.
Manga get's dropped to optimize sales and the chances of finding excellent manga and artists. Rotating 40 or 80 titles won't change that. That is the model of Shounen Jump, Shueisha has other magazines too you know? They also have bi-weekly ones, and monthly ones, they have Manga Plus. No reason to change Jump. Is likely CNN starting to air movies, because there is too much news on the channel - its a news channel. Additionally the artists themselves won't want this either. If they wanted to publish monthly, they would aim for a monthly magazine, same with bi-weekly. They have lot's of options. They chose weekly, because that's were you make the most money, and can get successful the fastest. They get paid by page, not a fixed salary. If they take a break for a week, that is a week with no pay. They go for weekly, because the pay is double or more than what they would get from a monthly chapter, and get 4 volumes published a year, rather than one or two a year in a monthly magazine. And they could get an anime in as little as 3 years, rather than 5-10 years with a monthly magazine. It's as if you demand overtime work to be banned, because workers shouldn't work more than 8 hours a day. But many workers want to do overtime, because it means more money.
I've been saying for years Oda should take a long break. One solution might be to switch from a weekly release to a two weeks release or go even monthly. At the end of the day I think the main issue runs deeper. As some have pointed out Oda is a workaholic. He's been putting his body to stress for 27 years as he's getting sleep for 3 - 4 hours every day. I don't know if a change in his release schedule would fix that. Oda himself has to have a change in his workload. At this point there is hardly anything Shueisha can threaten him with. It's unthinkable OP could be axed same as for H×H. Hell every other publisher would publish OP immediately if possible. Not to speak of all the money he has acquired in his life. I hope he finally takes this in to consideration. At the end of the day the primary focus is not OP, Shueisha, us fans etc. It's his health, his two daughters, his wife and his life overall.
The one thing I tend to worry about mangakas who often have series that go on for years or even decades is their health. Don't get me wrong, as much as I like One Piece and I support the popularity, but I think it really should've wrapped up its story ages ago. The working conditions for the creative industry in Japan is already inhumane, but it shouldn't take 20+ years for a group of pirates to find a legendary treasure. Is Luffy ever gonna be king of the pirates? Will Oda even live long enough to finally finish One Piece? Does he wanna finish One Piece one day and move onto something else?
This is very worrying. We've had a lot of cases of mangakas suffering from health issues with some of them even dying from them. I hope Oda takes a long, good rest. The last thing we want is him ending up in a hospital because he tried to write the latest chapter.
He has hypertension, diabetes and gout? Is he insane? He not only should take alot of breaks, but he needs to just end this as fast as he can if he really wants to see the end. Thats crazy.
Shonen Jump needs to put it's foot down and force the man to take a long term vacation. I think fans would accept if Oda went on a vacation until beginning Feb 2025, better than the One Piece remaining a mystery.
I hope that Oda´s heath gets better, unfortunately Gout and diabetes are chronic desease that are only controllable and you're not able to cure. He also is a known smoker, which is bad not only for Gout but also por cardiovascular deseases. If I´m honest the eye problem was probably cause by the diabetes so It's most likely that his health is only going to go down. The solution will probably be not only giving him a long vacation but also a less stressful schedule cause Oda is not going to die from this deseases but from heart problems.
Did i just hear that this man is getting 2 weeks no no no no no no no no two weeks He doesn’t deserve two weeks. He deserves a whole one year vacation matter fact make that two years to relax look, I seen those videos and heard how stressful being a manga artist is especially when the individuals manga is being adapted into an anime
Dude, is Oda, not some new guy who is trying to break into the industry. This has nothing to do with Shuiesha, is Oda who is the problem. The dude is an workaholic. He is worth $200 million dollars, he doesn't have to overwork himself in any way, he more than affords a studio and a team to do most of the work for him. And he already has that, the man just can't stop working, because that's his nature. He is obsessed with working on One Piece. He probably doesn't expect to live to see 60, or maybe even his mid 50's, so he is desperate to finish One Piece.

@davidgreen5994 ok
Chibi for Shounen Jump CEO. Dang that's a great idea!
This man works day in and day out, delivering Chapter after Chapter every week for over 25 years. Oda well deserves his break, however long he needs to.
After one piece is done he should take a long vacation. He really deserves it.
I think he will fully retire after One Piece, rather than getting a vacantion.
Oda can take as long as a break as he wants, the man literally has been working on One Piece for decades.
Prayers for Oda-sensei all the way to Japan. 🙏
I’m really sad…. 😢
Health is important🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️
At this point one peice will never end
Ikr. It seems endless
You was right chibi
Weekly releases are possible, but not the way they're doing them with one guy basically handling most of the work. They need to start having teams of writers and artists to pull this off, sometimes multiple artists per chapter. They make more than enough money to afford that and it'd really help with longevity so authors don't keep having grave illnesses from their intense schedules
Damn if they don’t let Oda rest his manga will end up like Berserk or Hunter X Hunter.
prayers to oda
Gout?
Rest well Oda-san. Honestly I'd be fine if he could take the rest of the year off and heal up. I love OP but his health is more important.
DON'T WORRY HE ISN'T THAT OLD , HE NEEDS REST THAT'S ALL
Jump Should Allow Oda Sensei to take at least 8 week break.
Fuck man… this is probably the beginning of the end. Elbaf might unironically be the last arc oda gets to write. I know it’s early and we don’t have the full picture, but I would be so devastated. I know his editors know where to take the story from here, but it won’t be the same…
Is there a way to send mail to Oda? Because I will personally write a letter to the man to take a break, we cannot lose this man!
Shut up. Oda does not give a fuck about you.
For his crazy schedule it's time for good break I wish he would take a 3 months rest.
ChibiNinja from psn?
Weekly deadlines and some anime studios having multiple anime projects and expecting it to be done within a week back to back.
Let the man rest I say we will wait as long as it takes
I remember reading an SBS where Oda said he has been sleeping 5 hours a night for decades so he has more time to draw and write
Pretty much the American schedule for comics I can dig it
I've been saying for years Oda should take a long break.
Oda needs to take a break for as long as he needs to man. Can't lose another goat.
Do not doubt the gout.
Review the Dandadan recent episode Chibi!
If we want him to see the end of his story he needs to take a break and recover.
He has hypertension, diabetes and gout? Is he insane? He not only should take alot of breaks, but he needs to just end this as fast as he can if he really wants to see the end. Thats crazy.
Ik it's not anime but you GOTTA talk about Arcane. Its so PEAK.
Yup
If Shueisha/Shounen Jump drives him to an early grave, fans will never forgive them.
I want Oda to take more breaks he should not have deadlines at all. We’re just lucky he’s still even doing three chapters per month.
Shonen Jump needs to put it's foot down and force the man to take a long term vacation.
I think fans would accept if Oda went on a vacation until beginning Feb 2025, better than the One Piece remaining a mystery.
please let him take a long break, or just work at it on a pace that's sustainable to him & not being hounded by weekly wolves
Monthly release but more chapter pages, this I would be in favor of.
Oda should take two month breaks at time. No need to push. 🙌🏽 self care is so important.
Give him a year or two off, man. Oda truly deserves it
Is time to end manga
If I could I would give my remaining lifetime to Oda so he can comfortably complete One Piece.
that was looking a little hunter x huntery and i was low key scared
I hope that Oda´s heath gets better, unfortunately Gout and diabetes are chronic desease that are only controllable and you're not able to cure. He also is a known smoker, which is bad not only for Gout but also por cardiovascular deseases. If I´m honest the eye problem was probably cause by the diabetes so It's most likely that his health is only going to go down. The solution will probably be not only giving him a long vacation but also a less stressful schedule cause Oda is not going to die from this deseases but from heart problems.
People angry at Oda for not completely ignoring his health should take a long look in the mirror.
Honestly, Oda needs a protege or have guest artist handle certain chapters.
He has a studio with 10-12 full-time artist working with him.
