I think that the Cadets will kick Cavies back out of the top 5 this year. Both corps have great talent but the Cadets show is just easier to understand and follow than this.
This show is easy to follow. They're playing songs with the word "Man" in the title or lyrics, and overlaying a theme of evolution. Nothing to get. My Way is a brilliant song, and accidentally adds layers of meaning to a show where there would otherwise be none.
Ok... I get it. 1. This is really early in the season 2. The video quality is not ur standard DCI show But from what I have seen so far (and I haven't seen much from the Cavies)... I'm sad. Gone, it seems, are the days with a cohesively flowing brass book and drill replaced by a bunch of ideas that are loosely pieced together with a lot of choas in between where the guys r running around doing god knows what. Don't get me wrong... I love Cavies. Been a hard core fan since the Four Corners show in 01. But it just seems like the golden times are over and have been for a while for them. I'm a tenor player myself from high school days and it's great to see their drumline featured like that. But I just see a bunch of stuff tied together with no cohesive theme (other than the name of the show itself). God, I hope I'm wrong about my initial feeling about this show. I really hope I'm wrong here :(
Max Cherkasskikh The Cavaliers show this year has quite possibly the most meaningful show design/concept in terms of depth. Every single beat in this show is planned with a theme and motive. You should check out the design video they just put out on their channel.
I saw that video. It makes total sense. I'm just saying that based on what I've seen so far (which is of poor quality and in bits) I'm not too thrilled about it. But I'm certain that I am probably wrong on my initial gut feeling. At least I hope I am. The problem for me as a fan and someone who has been involved in this sort of a thing before is that having a theme or themes is great but when there is no continuity between them and what seems like a bunch of awkward breaks in between loosely tying those themes it just looses that energy level (at least) for me when watching the show. Like, if you look at some of the early 2000's shows when the Cavies were dominating there was an energy flow from section of the show to another one. The other thing that gets me is how much the Cavies have lately (and I mean a few years) resorted to throwing in a bunch of drill chaos where sections of the corp r running around for a number of measures with no clear drill purpose other than to fall into another drill pattern a few measures down without actually moving in a logic way into it. I don't know, but that just irks me. I'm not against it per se. Throw one in there for variety. But when like a quarter of the drill in the show (or what seems like it) is guys just running around it just looses that energy flow. Look back to 2002 Frameworks and u'll see what I mean. That show was pure energy from the brass book stand point, drum book stand point, drill book stand point and overall general effect point. That's all I mean. I still love my Cavies to death and I'm a lifetime fan. I just wish they would steer back towards some of the golden 2000's stuff. I'm hoping I can see a clean (great quality video) show sometime before the season is over to really get the full idea of what the creators were trying to do. I can't see em live since I live in LA.
Nick Niehaus won't argue with u on that. Every Cavaliers show has its magic. I'm not saying that it's a bad show. I don't like to make a personal judgment until I've seen a great quality video of a show and than make a personal judgment for myself. And frankly my opinion doesn't matter. It's the majority opinion that matters. I'm sure this one will have its success. There have also been times when I wasnt too thrilled about a show and than went back later, saw the show ten more times and than was like "damn, that's actually genius". I'm just saying that personally for me as a fan I don't enjoy the show as much when there is a bunch of chaos happening in the show and when there is an energy break down when ideas r loosely tied by a bunch of random breaks between the ideas. It makes me ask the inevitable question than... Is this (meaning, some of the drill chaos) what is holding them down from higher grades and breaking into the top 3 during the championship week? I want them to win every year. But I just wonder if some if this "loose" idea writing is what is holding them back. I'm not saying that the ideas and the writing in themselves r bad. Just that it might be holding them back. Because than it gets harder to judge if a certain section of the show is actually meant to be chaos or is just the inevitable product of not being able to clean it up in time due to loose writing ideas. That's all...
Thanks. I'm loving this show forever.
