    Are you reading this thinking "Oh, I would love to support David in making more videos?". If so, have you clicked the share button and shared this video on Facebook? This really helps the RUclips algorithm especially as I just took 5 months off and RUclips thinks I disappeared!

      I am sure there is two sides to living anywhere and we can focus on the danger or the safety. I am from San Francisco, and yes it's beautiful but there is also a lot of crime and homeless people. Some journalist are even comparing SF to Mumbai, India!...I've lived in East Oakland, CA and felt like I am living in parts of Mexico and I am not DUMB. I don't go out late at night for a walk around the neighborhood. Oakland is considered very dangerous but it's not THAT bad in my eyes. SO I am curious as a single women with basic Spanish level -how safe is Durango, Mexico? What US city might you compare it to?

There's no a lot to see in Sonora, but you might like Álamos and San Carlos. Avoid Ciudad Obregón, not safe and nothing to see. Hermosillo = meh. Go to Baja. La Paz, Loreto, Mulegé are nice.

    About time one of my first youtubers I started following visits Durango, everyone says they'll visit the North and than they go to Monterrey or Sinaloa (nothing wrong with that, I love both places) but everyone think that's all the north is, Durango, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and few other states don't exist for most of the youtubers or they think is not worth it if they go visiting
    Until now my favorite video from you was El Real del Catorce from SLP but now that you're visiting my home state that might change, this is amazing!

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  3 года назад +3

      Amazing Enrique!! Your comment is EXACTLY why I came to Durango. For some reason, it has always been on my list. I remember the impact a RUclipsr going to SLP had, so I'm hoping Durango has the same effect! The only problems with northern Mexico as you know is the SIZE and the travel distances! Other than the supposed 'danger', I think these reasons also turn people off. But I love Durango, it's totally my kind of place.
      Coming up are Nombre de Dios, Mapimi & Puente Ojuela, Torreon (briefly in Coahuila!) and Mexiquillo. I'm hoping to get to Zona de Silencio but it's proving difficult to organise!!

    David, when you talk about safety I think about how I live in a suburb of Detroit which does not have a real good history in regards to safety....4 hours away is Chicago which I believe has the highest murder rate in the USA, last I heard it was almost 1 murder a day, 355 or so a year, out of control. I have been to Puerto Vallarta MX around 17 times for a week or 2 each time and a few times even more. We plan to move there as soon as my husband clears a lifetime of "stuff" out of our home and we can sell. I don't have a problem going downtown Detroit at times but am aware of my surroundings and act accordingly, which means I am careful and keep in mind that It is smart to be cautious. In PV MX, I don't have that feeling of being unsafe but I do keep in mind however that there is the possibility of unsafe conditions if I am not careful....it is not a fear but accepting the reality of my surroundings. We all need to be smart and careful and not ignore the facts with regards to different places we visit and the true reality of whatever situation we are in....but to have somewhat ignorant fear because of exaggerated or completely false reporting of Mexico for example, limits us in our ability to experience great places and people etc....it is a shame that many people fall for that, their loss I suppose. Hugs, Joe

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  3 года назад +4

      Wonderfully put! You described it much better than I could! Absolutely, it's the same with where I'm from - knife crime, gang crime, hitmen, guys selling guns and plenty of drug crime (ok alot of that was involving me LOL). I imagine Mexicans feel differently about safety in Mexico as I do about the UK, simply because they're from there and they have more knowledge/experience. As a foreigner there's always an element of detachment, we can know about things going on but never be truly 'aware', so having your 'wits about you' is essential anywhere. I see people SO worried about safety that they focus so much on that that they don't actually experience a location as you said!

Oh and another thing when you mention the scorching heat in Monterrey, i just have to clarify that when it gets that hot is just for a day or two then the weather cools abruptly, in the summer after a day like that it usually rains alot and from 40 it drops to 19 degrees and in autumn from 32 in a day can drop to 8 degrees. If you get to Sonora you will really know waht a scorching summer is really like in Mexico.

    Thank you for talking about how Mexico is portrayed. In October I'm driving from the US to explore more of Mexico and far too many people who know about my plans are constantly warning me about dangers in Mexico. After trying to explain how wrong they are, and failing, I now have an answer. I say nothing more than, "so far this year there have been 247 mass shootings in the US. 283 people have been killed and 1,005 have been injured."

    Hey there! Durango is honestly such a safe spot in Mexico. I spent my younger years there and could easily hang out late at night without any worries. The place is a real gem: neat streets, lovely views, super friendly folks, and, bonus, affordable living and tasty food! Plus, it's right near the jaw-dropping Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. It's a bummer though, the local and national governments haven't done much for the state, and lack of good jobs means many folks end up leaving.

    David, this is the first video I see made by you, thanks so much for your objective opinion about safety in Mexico! I retired last year from working 3 decades in the US but I’m originally from the state of Sinaloa, west of Durango, moved back home over 6 months ago and I tell you! I dont hear any accounts of street violence or otherwise from family, friends or acquaintances, and I think it is because most likely the incidence of crime is just like any other medium size city in Mexico. But that said, of course its hard to believe to foreigners because I’m sitting on the capital of the Sinaloa cartel and there have been incidences of violent confrontations between government forces and cartel operatives in recent years. The most recent significant one was in the summer of 2019; kind of stuff you expect to see in narco movies. I was told by relatives that a few innocent bystanders in that thug of war lost their lives, unfortunately! After that violent outburst things have been normally peaceful in the city and state for us common people, not involved in drug trafficking, however, members of the mafia are a different case. Its common to hear rummors and tell tales of how they get murdered by their own organizations and that type of news can always be found on the news with all kinds of gruesome details, especially if you look for it. So, yes Its safe to drive in city and highways but I dont venture to drive alone after dark, especially because I’m female and I’m still not knowledgeable enough of the city neighborhoods. I spent 40 years abroad and things changed a lot, especially traffic became quite heavy. My friends and relatives they all drive at night and I havent heard anything unpleasant in the 7 months I’ve veen living here. So far so good! I think feeling safe in a place is a very individual state of mind depending on what we know and what we fear or what “we think we know”. Thanks David, I found this great vid as I plan to visit Durango soon.

Been going back as often as possible, and everywhere I have lived since then. Still get reactions of concern when I tell people I am going to Mexico, but not to a resort. Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Durango, are a beautiful chunk of the earth.

I wish I had visited Durango while I was there. Comments on the obsession with the "is X safe" question is quite spot on! I spend about a year in Guanajuarto, half a year in Oaxaca, and half a year in Cuernavaca. . . and lots of visits to CDMX and Tlaxcala, and danger was not foremost on my mind, despite being a completely neurotic human being. I mean, life on the street in Mexico. . . well, it's certainly no Baltimore! Much more sedate, actually. Sure, like anywhere, you think, and should, do I want to walk through this narrow little dark callejon after sunset? Nope. Simple common sense. Anyway, thanks.!!

      I'm just watching this video because I'm planning a trip to Durango, so I hope you see my response a year later. I am a 61-year-old US American, and I've been going to Mexico for more than 20 years. I've been there for 4 longer vacations, not counting short trips across the border. Unlike the author of this video, I don't consider myself reckless. I have to say, I have loved every one of my trips to different parts of Mexico. I have never felt in danger while I was there. It has the beauty, the cultural richness, and the delicious food of a European country like France or Italy, all at a much lower price, and frankly with friendlier people. By all means you and your husband should go. I might suggest that you try Oaxaca as your first stop. It is a delightful small city with amazing cultural richness and incredible food. I think you and your husband will love it, and it may inspire you to see other parts of Mexico. Your next stop might be Mexico City, which is huge and a bit overwhelming, but one of the great cities of the world like London or Paris, with amazing architecture and incredibly rich culture. Of course you want to think a bit about safety. Don't walk down deserted streets at night. Take a taxi if you need to cross emptier spaces at night. Don't display expensive jewelry or cameras. Pay attention to your surroundings. Drink bottled or purified water. Look at a map or ask locals to find neighborhoods best avoided. But all of that (except the part about water) is true of most US cities. Use a little common sense, and you'll not only be fine, you'll have a wonderful time.

    Great to see you back amigo! The Francisco "Pancho" Villa museum is in Durango. If it is open, please review it for us. Now, about safety ... I just read a review this morning of a new US tv show called Mosquito Coast. It is about a father (on the lam, I think) who takes his family to Mexico - with all the dusty dangers that inevitably come with Mexico in US entertainment. As a Canadian living close to the US border - I have been listening to this crap all my life. I know burly cops who will not leave the all-inclusive in Mexico unless they are on some expensive excursion (and yet they would roam all over US cities). Not because of what they have experienced, but because of what they saw in US movies and tv. So, I think for many Canadians and US citizens - it is a genuine revelation to learn that Mexico is no more dangerous than it is at home. Yes, safety has become a RUclips click bait cliché - but it will take a long time to dispel the stereotypes that have been constructed over many decades. Anyway, as for the UK - I have watched many British crime series on Netflix (Luther, River, The Fall, Marcella, Happy Valley, etc) - holy cow the UK has a lot of scary psychopaths! I am so traumatized - I need a video - is UK safe? Will an axe murderer get me?
