That’s why Tomb Raider fan Nicobass is leading development on The Dagger of Xian, a Just Demo remake of the second game in the series, only this time built on Unreal Engine 4.
He’s been at it for a while now, but I’m talking about it today because he’s released a playable demo for the project which you can download and try out.

This is the LARA CROFT i fell in love with. Athletic, self-sufficient and gorgeous. Impeccable remake I must say.
This is incredible and I would buy it in a heart beat! Beautifully done... I can tell that the developer really loved the original game and respectfully recreated it without dramatically changing Lara. Something a true fan would do, and I love that so much!!!! The nostalgia is strong with this one!!!!! Ahhh I want to play!

This is amazing; an old school Tomb Raider but made in the same vein as the Legend-Anniversary-Underworld trilogy. As much as I like the new Tomb Raiders I'd take this over those any day. This is beyond amazing how it doesn't look like a fanmade game but more like a funded dev and publisher's product. Big kudos to Nicobass and his team.
I think of the new Tomb Raiders like Resident Evil franchise. I don't mind the new stuff, but I yearn for the old classic style back now.

@@jubeiyagyu8316 it's not that it sucks, or that it's an uncharted clone, it's that Lara was made in the reboot is nothing like what Lara actually was when she was younger. Young Lara was more ballsy and daring than that originally. And three games later, we still don't have any evolution when it comes to Lara's personality, she still acts like an absolute idiot and in a very childish manner even after going through so much, no evolution with her fighting style because they want to keep on going with a bow even though Lara's signature weapons will always be two handguns, no matter what they try to put as the new canon defailt weapon for Lara. It bothers me that they don't listen to the fans and try to please them as well at least by adding a layer of cockiness to her personality through the games, and making her develop a fondness to hand guns as well. I didn't like a lot of things about S.E games and a lot of things were badly executed, like her "loss of innocence" in the first game. Her resorting to killing someone should've been way later, almost at the end of the game. It should've been more of a hide and seek game, not like MGS or anything, but with sneaking sequences, and using your wits to find a way to stay hidden, maybe with a crawling and hiding in plain sight mechanics and such. The older TR games weren't as perfect as a lot of people's nostalgia filter makes them remember them as, nor were they good exploration games though. They were sometimes very tacky, awfully linear with hair pulling puzzles that often made no sense, had a lot of bad level design etc etc.. Actually when it comes to exploration and actually roaming around and always discovering small details and treasures, caves and tombs to explore, Square Enix reboots get a 9/10. But for the storytelling they get a 4/10 and a big ol' 0 for character developpement.
This is how you make the exploring and fun Tomb Raider game! No pointless dialogues, whining, talking to yourself, Rambo, skinning animals or "press this button to win".

4EverGamer X agreed as do I . But sometimes you can be nuanced and subtle using expressions rather than words and be just as if not more powerful . Too much, often clunky dialogue can get in the way of good story telling . But everyone has their preference and they have a right to enjoy it.

I know, right! The reboot Lara is super whiny! They also picked an over-acting voice actress. Everything sounded so exagerrated. Even when she's just reading something off a wall, she sounded out of breath and yelling, kind of like Emma Watson in the later Harry Potter films.

@Tiredofdumbfuks its not even about adding action the story is trash, the game is in general brain dead to play its way too easy on the hardest mode, Shadow of TR has barely any combat segments yet there is a bunch of upgrades for your guns, all the characters are extremely generic, atleast in TR 2013 there was atleast constant action to distract from how boring the game is

I took a nap for about 3 hours haha I genuinely don't know if I'm awake or still dreaming. Remakes aren't made because people don't care. Point Blank. But you do, and you took it upon yourself to make something I don't think the very producers would make with such integrity and honestly, love. I felt right back in Tomb Raider 2. This is a PURE remake.

@MyboiJAEGER As much as The Angel of Darkness was unfinished and unplayable, I was able to see the potential in it. It was the logical evolution, a game that kept the core idea of Tomb Raider. But then came TR: Legend, jumpy and acrobatic, no substance, and it was the end. That was the turning point. They destroyed it, then went with the yet another reboot! Clueless and detached from their audience. Thank heavens, the power of game making is becoming more accessible. People know what they want.

older games just overall have something that the latest games don't. is it that they are more authentic? i don't know, but something about them is definitely special. call it nostalgia, but in my opinion, it's not just that.

This is how Lara should look like! The old one but upgraded. I like the new ones but this. Just bring so many memories. It wasn't easy to finish this game. It took days of hard core playing because you had to do everything by yourself. And the way she looks is just perfect!
Lol i remember rage quitting so many times the last mission in the manor bc i would get overwhelmed by the enemies and no more healing items... my 8yo ass was so salty at the last stage i actually only finished the game like, 5 years later.
If this is what a remake of tomb raider 2 looked like, I’d love to see what they’d do with 3 4 and 5.

This is amazing. We need the acrobatic Lara Croft back. If his had the same gymnastic moves as Underworld, I'd call this the best remake I've seen recently.
Underworld didn't have "gymnastic" moves, they were full blown superpowers. They didn't even look like something a human could realistically do. I remember just darting myself up walls. The swan dive had like 2 and a half frames.

I don't disagree with the game being Americanised because that is true- but playing ALL of the Tomb Raider games (including classic ones made even before I was born) I have noticed more of a character developement in Lara. In the first reboot she truly learns that she has to stop this organisation that is only looking to do selfish things with artifacts of great power, and the first time she kills someone she is puking and crying because she is realizing the tasks at hand.
I agree, there are a lot of unnecessary explosions, but in the most recent Shadow of the Tomb Raider you get to see her as a sassy, strong, and beyond life character- because she developed from the girl who lost her parents to a Survivor. While having those qualities she is still a character that is very much human and isn't just a killing machine with no emotion.

Just played this, was blown away, I loved the exploration, the surprises (different and additions to the classic version) and minimalism.
This really needs to be a full blown project... Games like this are rare gems.

Speak for yourself. I'm sick of all of you who belong to a noisy minority feeling entitled to state what "true fans want". I consider myself a true fan, been playing TR since 96, and I think the new Lara is far better than the old one, who was a one dimensional character with no purpose.
This new character has so many layers and is so complex she feels very realistic. She is now more than a hoe with two guns stealing artifacts for herself.
Also the gameplay is deeper and more balanced. Puzzles make more sense and are more varied.
If you don't like it, it's ok. But don't lie saying everybody wants what you want, that's simply not true.

This fan made remake is pure gold, Tomb Raider saga should return to his original essence, so the iconic dual pistols, unique enviroments, less dramatic storyline and the cool and classic Lara, the good old Exploration game instead of a survival game, Tomb Raider reeboot games have nothing to do with the previous games

Bringing me flashbacks of both the classic games (as far as level design goes) and the Legends trilogy (as far as controls go). This has been my ideal game for a TR game for a long time. A game with the level design and puzzles of the classics, combined with the controls and move set of the Legend trilogy. This remake of 2 is already looking better than the original

Wow..I am so amazed! How you even have the knowledge and skill to be able to do this is beyond me. Amazing stuff. I’ve always dreamed about a complete remastered tomb raider series so watching this was amazing and also very nostalgic.
the closest experience to this in the reboot trilogy is by playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider but playing on Deadly Obsession on the first playthrough and disable the survival instinct. the exploration will be greatly improved because you rely on your own senses for awareness to your surrounding without those handholding feature.

Because a true fan knows exactly what other true fans want, as a person who grew up on the original games I so desperately miss the old style Tomb Raider. Everything was perfect and if you were stuck on what to do then tough shit basically, the newer ones they made them too easy and the way you control Lara too over complicated with buttons. But even still Tomb Raider overall is just amazing.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I'm a bit of an old fogey, but loved all the earlier TR games. I loved exploring without having to kill stuff every 5 mins. I hope whoever did this manages to do the whole game.

It is not a shooter. I play shadow of tomb raider and it is what every omb raider promised to be. Fights are short and interesting, exploration is paramount. There was more fighting in TR2

Completely agree. I do feel that TR has lost something over the years. I loved the original games. I can remember myself and my brother playing until gone 4am some mornings on Tomb Raider 2. Couldn't imagine myself doing that with some of the more reacent additions.

Omg it is so authentic! I got those feeling I had in childhood again. Sound tracks brings memories. 'A' when Lara jumps. Mean traps that give you heart attack same as jumpscares from 'outlast". And eternal question from tr2 level 1 "where the heck I need to jump" (I really spend years to find out, i was 12 when I finally got to Venice level).But there was 1 tiger and he was fearsome enemy... (kinda dissapointed).Might be just me, but I think TR anniversary was awesome and I would gladly play remakes of old series. Nowadays heroine of TR is so lame, female winny copy of Nathan. Old Lara had strong personality, she was a model for others herself. Be cursed SE for killing the game and consumerizing series. RIP Lara Egypt 1999.

I am baffled how the heck has someone made this!!! It’s incredible, I loved the first 4 tomb raider games but recent ones I’m just a bit meh about, they aren’t the same. But this is tomb raider through and through, the Lara I loved playing as a kid, the atmosphere in this video is giving me all the nostalgia feels 👏👏👏👏👏
Let's open a kickstarter for this dude, so he can hire more people to help him out with this, so it would release faster. This is absolutely amazing and well worth releasing. I think that the fandom is strong enough, I mean we raised over 100000 pounds for recording of the music from the first 3 games by Nathan McCree , WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!
I'd love to see that, but it unfortunately wouldn't work without Square Enix's blessing. Unless he contracts with Enix, he can't profit off this without exposing himself to an intellectual property infringement lawsuit, which can be very, very, very expensive.
I enjoy the reboots, but watching this made me feel misty-eyed and nostalgic, and kind of regretful over what the reboots COULD have been. This is gorgeous; the animation, the backgrounds, the music, and of course, the "trap" jumpscares that the originals had.

I couldn't get passed the ghost in that room with picture you're supposed to grab. After days of doing everything to pass the challenge and failing, I gave up Tomb Raider forever. The game is supposed to be fun not infuriating.

Preston Cooper i did and i played them both but it seems more like survivel horror games instead of a tombraider game! They missed the two guns and replaced them with stupid bow and lara seems very weak in these game and the story is much less than we used to have plus i didnt like the open world shit that they made...it seems like another game and another lara..i prefer the tomb raider legend style ! Strong lara with strong story and strong adventure that can beat anyone ass !
Ehab Sy I honestly enjoyed the original ps1 tomb raider 2 more than rise of tomb raider n as pixely as those graphics are I was somehow so immersed that the world of tomb raider 2 is more vibrant n better looking than that of rise of tomb raider
I personally think that shadow of the tomb raider is a perfect blend of the action from the previous two and the exploration from the originals. If they remade the originals with similar gameplay to the reboots (specifically shadow) then that would be everything
I think this argument about old and new is stupid. I really miss the old games, going around in circles for 3 hours and trying to figure out what you're supposed to do. I really miss that. But those days of gaming are gone, no more puzzles like that. Story is linear and you know what to do immediately and the exploration is done in the rest of the sandbox. That's how it goes these days. Graphics are great in new games, something to appreciate. But really now, times are different as is the player base. Maybe we need to look things from other angle and enjoy both the old and the new, perhaps different things but alltogether just appreciate we have the new games in the first place.

If you by chance missed Tomb Raider Anniversary, buy it. It's old school and the graphics (to me) hold up OK. For the PC.
It's just what a lot of people do know, they like to live in the past. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
The Batman Arkham games are still like that. New one coming out this year, too. They know how to keep your head spinning.

This is what everyone expects from a Tomb Raider remake. The only thing that is unsuitable with this version is, the fan developer is exactly knowing where to go in this demo game play, otherwise it's a little bit hard to know where to go in these new design and environment. That's just a mention by my side.

I felt Tomb Raider Anniversary did so many things right for fans but it sold poorly so they went back to action heavy with the newer games. I don't want a Tomb Raider game where I have to worry about crafting arrows, upgrading Lara's abilities and doing side quests. If only they'd have continued remaking the games after Anniversary into the next generation of consoles. Also...they should remake ICO.

It was buggy. The fight sequences with bosses were changed to QTE. Not a bad game though. Still liked it very much.
