Hi! As brazillian, first of all, thank you for this review, and second, I don't think it will have a continuation (session 2)

I liked it, but they left out The Lap of the Gods: 1993 at Donington Park.

The single greatest lap in the history of F-1, while during the race he made everyone else look like f3 drivers😂

    It's a miniseries. There wont be a season 2.

From a technical standpoint, the series is amazing. The attention to detail is superb. The scenes during the races are very well executed. But, as a narrative, the series is mediocre, at best. Senna is presented as this unidimentional character. The writers dwell on details about Senna's life no one wants to see. With only 6 episodes, wasting the full first episode on Senna's girlfriend story is such a waste of running time. The main events are shown in the most superficial way possible. And as a result of the poor time management there are huge and unexcusable jumps in time. One of those time wasters is presented in the form of the fictional reporter character, which is almost unbearable to watch. She was created as a result of lazy writing. She is there only to do the most lazy and obvious exposition and to steal screen time from real and more interesting characters and events. If the writers weren't as lazy as they were. They would have written more interesting scenes of other REAL characters interacting and when really needing to do exposition, they could've used Galvão Bueno, also a reporter, also a friend of Senna, and also a real person that existed and still exists in this world. With such a legend and complex human being as its subject, the writers really, really, REALLY missed the mark here.

I highly disagree. I think the series does what it set out to accomplish, tell the story of Senna’s life from his perspective, and it does so incredibly. Everybody knows the details of his racing career, and that’s why they explore his personal life as much as they do. For supposed racing “purists” who only want cool cars going fast, I can see why this is a dealbreaker, but from a storytelling standpoint it helps establish just how dedicated Senna is to racing. To say that this show is “mediocre at best” is a disgrace to all the people who produced it. These filmmakers have more passion than most people do for their regular jobs, and they care about Senna’s story and who he was. Superficial is not how I would describe the events of this show in the slightest. And Senna as a character might seem unidimensional, but if you look deeper you can see his subtle character development in the form of his mentality shifting: he goes from being this “winning is everything” hotshot to a man who cares deeply about his craft and about the other drivers around him. And any “flatness” that Senna really does have as a character is most likely a product of the writers not wanting to fabricate details and complexities about his true personality out of pure respect. And while I can see why people think the fictional reporter detracts from the story, I believe her presence in the show was totally inoffensive. In fact, there are parts where I feel like no other character, fictitious or otherwise, could have filled in for her. However I will say that Galvão is quite underutilized outside of being the Brazilian commentator. But overall, this is one of the greatest pieces of Senna media out there, because of how much care the filmmakers had for his story, and how well the actors understood their characters. This show for me is a 10/10.

I fully agree about huge time jumps they are making, and it feels like Senna and Prost are only drivers winning (very little to no mentioning of Piquet and Mansell, completely ignoring Williams being major force in 1986 and 1987, etc...)

@@glitchingbee "tell the story of Senna’s life from his perspective, and it does so incredibly." No, it does not. Everyone here knows that the script had to be approved by Senna's family, and when I say Senna's family I mean his sister Viviane, who is well known for having a tight grip on everything Senna related. So, it's no surprise the script is so watered down and keep just promoting this idea that Senna is almost a saint.
"Everybody knows the details of his racing career" - No, they don't. Maybe motorsport enthusiasts like yourself may know. But, I'm a Brazilian and know first hand the reactions of people here. Many born after 1994 are watching the series just to know who that Senna guy is and why he is so relevant to our country.
"For supposed racing “purists” who only want cool cars going fast, I can see why this is a dealbreaker" - I'm sorry to disappoint, but I couldn't care less about racing.
"These filmmakers have more passion than most people do for their regular jobs" - I don't care. Their passion does not make them immune to criticism. Every work of art when released to the public is going to cause different reactions. And I bet they're not those snowflakes you think they are. I bet that they can take it.
"Superficial is not how I would describe the events of this show in the slightest." - It is superficial. It only looks deeper to us because we know the story very well and can fill the gaps. But, think about those that are getting to know his story.
"Superficial is not how I would describe the events of this show in the slightest. And Senna as a character might seem unidimensional, but if you look deeper you can see his subtle character development in the form of his mentality shifting: he goes from being this “winning is everything” hotshot to a man who cares deeply about his craft and about the other drivers around him." - The fact that you think that this evolution was "subtle" tells a lot why you think the script here is a genius piece of art.
"And any “flatness” that Senna really does have as a character is most likely a product of the writers not wanting to fabricate details and complexities about his true personality out of pure respect." - Not out of pure respect. Just like I said before. Viviane Senna, his sister has a tight grip on Senna's legacy. And she approved everything show in the series. It's not the writers respecting Senna. It was that they had their hands tied behind their backs by Viviane. As curiosity, in Brazil the series is suffering a huge backlash by the way they have shown Adriane Galisteu, Senna's girlfriend at the time of his death. The hatred Viviane has for her is well known in the county. And it show's in the series by how quick and superficially she is shown, compared to Xuxa and his first wife, both of whom had 1 entire episode each dedicated to their relationship with Senna. The point is: The series was heavily censored by Viviane and that's a fact.
"And while I can see why people think the fictional reporter detracts from the story, I believe her presence in the show was totally inoffensive. In fact, there are parts where I feel like no other character, fictitious or otherwise, could have filled in for her." - Every single scene and every single line of dialogue by her could've been replaced by others talking with each other or talking to Senna. She is just a device the lazy writers used to make exposition and say things out loud instead of trying to show more and trust the audience. They even try to create a family drama with her through some lines of dialogue with Senna and then bringing her daughter into the show. It's so embarassing to watch. Really.
"However I will say that Galvão is quite underutilized outside of being the Brazilian commentator. But overall" - I agree. Any Brazilian knows that Galvão and Senna had real and deep friendship. That's what is enraging about that stupid fictional reporter. There was so much that could've been explored here. So much material. And they threw it all away just to create an embarassing character, that had no real anything. The show would be so much more richer if they used the screen time given to that stupid character and used to show Galvão and Senna instead. Instead, Galvão, the biggest announcer in Brazil, is relegated to be just one of the other announcers. And even that they do poorly, as I think James Hunt was much more insightful during that racing scenes.
"But overall, this is one of the greatest pieces of Senna media out there" - It is. But, I would still recommend the Asif Kapadia's documentary over this to anyone interested on knowing Senna.
      "This show for me is a 10/10." - I'd give it a 6.5/10

First sentence and you killed it for me. Wrc I'd say is 10x more dangerous than F1. Plus this Senna commercial intensity of F1 milking more and more it's annoying.... Hope the Senna family getting their share.

His family is the one that most explore his image. Not only they are getting their share, but also made changes and demands on the script
