The playoff round is completely unnecessary but its there as safety net to protect the big teams who have had a poor league phase, keep them in it. Wouldn't be surprised if the final was contested by two teams who finish outside the top 16 in the league phase..joke of a format.
I get your point, but you'd have too many disinterested teams if only 16 through in this format, I don't mind this format seems a nice compromise to suit the objectives of all parties.
