JEEP WJ Rzeppa to Double Cardan Swap Grand Cherokee

- I changed out the rzeppa joint front axle to a double cardan joint. Doesn't vibrate much on the freeway and also doesnt make any noise. Its been about a month since the install and I am pleased with the swap! Make sure you have the correct yoke for your tcase when swapping or else you will have to make some adjustments how I did!
Thanks to the folks on facebook Jeep WJs Only for helping out with the yoke issue!

good to know of the splines that need to be ground (machined) down before I get into it! I just pulled a 242 from the wrecker today to swap out my 247, since I have a spartan locker for the front dana 30 (full time 4hi not compatible with lunchbox locker in the front). Old 247 has double cardan, which I will keep. [new] 242 has rzeppa (junk) for offroad.
Do you know for sure that the used shaft you used is from a v8 WJ? Everyone says a v8 ZJ will fit perfectly but I get mixed answers on whether or not a v8 WJ front shaft will fit some say it is not long enough.
Just finished my swap! I wouldn't have been able to do it without your input! I have a '04 WJ 4.0l with selectrac. Took the shaft from a 94 ZJ with a 4.7l. Had to grind the splines like you showed on the video and it works perfect! Thank you so much!
You found a ZJ with a 4.7L?
@@user-uj3zk2cx8t yep. It was in the local parts yard. I don't know if it was the original engine... it was someone's project for sure but looked like it got t-boned... 😔
@@danwall5010 I have never in my life seen that before. Wow. It was a factory 4.7 in a 93-98 Grand Cherokee?
@@user-uj3zk2cx8t like I said it was a project jeep for sure. It was sad to see it I the scrap yard. I doubt it was the original engine. It had a 242 transfer case so I think it may have has a 4.0 from the factory but I don't know for sure.
Thank you for this video, i have been debating on doing the swap, for some time now. With your instructions, i am a lot more confident on the swap. Thank you for the details.

Thanks dude! No problem!
I advise to replace the seals when you at it, they cost like 10 bucks. As well as the crush sleeve in the fwd axle.
the landscape looks like montana 😍
Does it really 🧐 I’m in Southern California do thats crazy haha
Sorry i didn‘t know 😁 i‘m from Germany
How has the drive shaft been holding up? I also have a 4.0 WJ but I heard the double cardan from a 4.7 WJ wouldn't fit because it was too short.
same thing happened to me this evening i just finished my 4inch lift went to put the new shaft in after the yoke and i extended it fully and im 3 inches or so short
Part numbers? Where to get them from new, not junkyards. From what Jeep year and models? Please let me know!
I seen you in Grand Cherokee WJ's on Facebook when you were seeking help, I'm currently scraping every penny for the swap, i have the repezza 242 case
Hey man! Yea it’s a good source for help! I’m with ya on the scrapping every penny! Hopefully by the end of summer I’m on a lift kit instead of budget boost
@@NajarOffroad i was a BB lift (2.5 pucks from supreme) then i had spring sag, so i purchased FBGs 2.5 springs and wasnt disappointed, I'm on bilstein 5100series and 32s JK rubicon take offs
Thanks much for this video. CV on my rzeppa drive shaft disintegrated on me. Have it pulled off already. I’m going to look to put in a double cardan shaft now. 2004 WJ with 4” lift
+Mitch Hinkle No problem! Yea they go fast once you lift it! Super easy to change aslong as you have the spline for it
My bro, how can you measure t case oil so you know there's a correct amount.
Is there a transfer case yoke for the 242 or are the only ones the one I would have to grind down?

Getting ready to do a zone 4" lift on My 04 limited with the 4.7 v8. Was worried, so I crawled under at 430 am in the dark to check to see what I have....... It's a Double Cardon 😊❤️ now, I can just order My Lift kit and get this Build Started !! Thanks for the video Bro !
So how can I tell if I have one too? I have a 2004 limited 4.7. What am I looking for?
@@accountsreceivable6948 on the front shaft going to the front rear, look at both ends . The end connected to the rear and the transfer case. Make sure both ends look like a universal joint , like on a driveshaft .
@@kingsoutdoors4379did you have to order a custom length drive shaft for a lift bigger than 4”?
@matthew7972 I did not, I bought an fzj80 and now I'm building a 16 toyota trd with a 4 inch lift
@@kingsoutdoors4379 sweet. I’m gonna buy the IRO 6.5” lift and wanted to get more info about what I need to do with the driveshaft
Great video bro! I recently acquired a 2004 wj awd and I want to lift but need to do the swap as I have the rpezza on the tcase side. From what I found I need a driveshaft from a 93-95 zj with the double cardan. Are those years correct?
Where did you get your shaft and yoke?
Did you find a vibration after lifting your WJ?
I just did the rough country 4” lift on my 04 grand.
I bought one used tire to do a test fit and see if it was going to rub before buying new tires.
There is a horrible vibration. I’m wondering if it is the Quadra Trac 2 seeing the substantially larger tire spinning different and putting the transfer case into 4x4 this causing the bad wobble.
Good news is the tires don’t rub.
What a Yoke is on Transfer case? Right article!
The NV247 has a 27 spline. All Yoke i find has 26 spline!
I try same to, but the market in Germany is very small for this parts.
IronRockOffroad.com has your solution. They are specialists in the Jeep WJ department.
I need to do the same thing, but for my ZJ, but my front drive shaft on the front rzeppa lol. I can't find any youtube videos explaining the process...
i have a nv245 transfer case and have the same exact style front drive shaft on my 2006 jeep commander that you had in your jeep. i would like to do the same conversion. i've already changed mine out twice in the last 5 years.
I have to do this on the Front diff of a 98 ZJ.
Was that "size 8" wrench in women's or children's? And I'm wondering, that tool that pulls - what's it called? lol I'm sorry, just bustin' your chops a little.
😂 I hit it with my purse to
Bro my WJ is making some noice like from the transfer case only when u put it on 4 low idk if you can help
So I noticed that you were in 4 Ed neutral. How did you brace the transfer case end to keep it from moving.
Where did you get double cardan? Junkyard? Good one, i need to do this.
Did you have to mess with bearing preload?
Where did you buy the new shaft from? Oh what kind of truck is it donated from?thank you in advance
It’s from a v8 WJ I bought it off someone on facebook
Is your WJ lifted? I recently lifted mine a couple inches (3.25") and now my driveshaft is starting to fail. Someone told me I need to do this swap. thank you for making this video!!!
yea i have the front at about 3 inches and the rear 2.5 so it sits even. Yea i would recommend doing the swap my old one was making a loud noise so i had to replace it.
@@NajarOffroad I joined the Jeep WJ only group and found the guy that sells them. Luckily he is close enough that I can drive to him and not have to pay the ridiculous shipping fee to Canada.
Hi guys any of you can tell me where to buy these parts on the internet? can you tell me the part numbers? thank you guys
@Land and Lore Photograph Off Road Adventures @omnipotence hey how are you guys? how is the noise when the driveshaft is failing? I need to check it out, my WJ is 2 inch lifted with almost all stock parts.. On the highway I feel some vibrations and when I change the transfer to 4lo there is a clicking sound in the wheels when I turn around mostly.
@@jesusrperezd did you figure what the problem was? Transfer case ? Were u using a cv type Zeppo front drive shaft? I’m having the same issue
Where did u get that double shaft from or does it come from a different car thanks
Its possible have the numer part of cardn or link?
Where did you get that driveshaft?
What's it mean if it has play.. I just put mine on and I tigented it Down tight and it has play. And I got the right yoke for the 247j

Nice job brudah.
So whenever i lift my wj i have to do this ? And where i can get this driveshaft
Excellent video
I just did this on my 04 with 4in long arm and it feels like it's vibrating and in 4x4 should I drop the tcase ? ughh ! I'm about to give up on wjs and go back to an xj lol
No maybe you need to adjust caster? Or take it to a driveline shop and have the test balance
@@NajarOffroad I took it there they said its the yoke bouncing from grinding the spline down ? Never herd anything like that in my life lol so I took the front drive shaft out and posted it for trade lol
Hello, where do i Buy the Kit ?
The bolts for the double cardan. Did they come with the yoke or the shaft? Or is it the same bolts as the. Repezza
Found can buy the strap bolts thank you
Some of them came with it. The ones that attach to the yoke I picked up at a local hardware shop.
Hey I’m just wondering how much did you grind? I’m doing double cardinal sway I’m my Laredo! Thank for tour help! Love the video!
What do you mean by grind?
How much depth you grind the yoke? To fit properly in the tcase.
I see what you mean! I just grinded it then checked if it fit until it was good!
Najar Entertainment ok thank you so much for your help!
Where did you get the double Cardin drive shaft from?
Look for Dan Como on Facebook groups! He sells used ones with new joints for great price

Hello , what's the Number of the piece 2:23 ,
Nice intro
My brother so I solved the back lights issue now I have the front drive shaft making clunking noise when I use the 4 wheel drive. Do I have to replace the whole shaft?
Thanks for the Video dude 👌
Where did you find the new dust shield for the yoke, I’m having a whack a time finding one. Or I might just try and re-use the old one.
I think I just got it like that
I have a Jeep wj 1999 I did a proyect lifted 3.5" ( rough country) but I had 2 times the same problem. How can I get the right part zzepa?? On facebook??
What is the donor shaft and yoke from?
What did the donor shaft come off of ?
How do I get those drill adapters to remove that nut? it's a special drill
Great Video! What's the name of that tool you used to get the yoke out?
I’m not sure 😂 some sort of puller maybe a jaw puller
2 Jaw puller. you can rent of from a autoparts store or get one from the usual scumbags.
Any chance you have the part numbers for the shaft and yoke?
How is the driveshaft holding up?
Still solid 💪
I come to this channel to learn how not to do things the right way and what to avoid

Hey everybody i need advice i bought a 04 wj in great shape this year and im getting pops and bangs from the drivetrain now sounds like its coming from the front leftside wheel, like maybe as if the front left side is locking up. I dont think i have varilock diff or lsd i doubt i do, i changed both cv axles in front diff and the front driveshaft with a stock cv rzeppa type. i disconnected the front driveshaft and no more pops and bangs , so is the problem the transfer case, the fairly new cv rzeppa shaft or the fact that the lift kit is causing binding maybe with the cv rzeppa shaft. I bought the wj with a rough country lift maybe 4-5 inch lift. what could it be i need the select trac to work because winter is coming. this will be the second time im changing the transfer case can the rzeppa shaft be causing a problem for my transfer case or visa versa because of a 4.5 inch lift??
que plataforma fue el donador de cardan doble nudo???? xj?
What 3 inch lift do you recommend for a wj
How did you keep it from spinning while removing yoke
My guess is he left the trans in park. He has the AWD t-case so it is always locked and with the tires on the ground there is nothing to spin.
Question!! How did you keep the yoke from spinning when you were using the breaker on that 28mm bolt?
I need this answer
Lock the car into 4wd
@@MillsMagicFishingLures 4h or 4lo locks it up from spinning freely on you
Were can I find drive shaft like that and my vehicle is land cruiser 105
junkyard
What was the driveshaft you upgrade that you put into the wj ? I need to buy one my stock one broke off and I got 6.5 long arm lift
It’s from a v8 Jeep Grand Cherokee
@@NajarOffroad ok thnx can the axle CV be done this way too
@@NajarOffroad do you have a part number or anything I cant find anything?
With a 6.5 Longarm you are going to have to get custom shafts or your going to roast Ujoints. That is a stock shafts and will not be long enough to have the correct angles.
Did you add rtv sil gasket between the new yoke & tcase? since oil came out when removal
+pinoycos actually no I did not. But I haven’t seen any leaks from that area.
Najar, when breaking the nut. How did you prevent yoke from turning?
@@pinoycos I believe i used an impact gun so it made it real easy.

You can use 93-98 zj shaft from rear
I can use the front driveshaft from the 93-98 ZJ ?
what year and make did that front driveshaft come out of?
I'm not really sure. I purchased the drive shaft off of someone selling it on a Jeep WJ facebook page.
