It’s so amazing to see mountains now in your videos, what a difference! You made it through all of that flat, hot, land! Your footage of west Colorado is gorgeous, it reiterates my desire to move there eventually. It’s sad that you’re having to do highway/road walks in W Colorado, I thought there were tons of trails there! You’re doing awesome!!! I have been loving watching you cross the US!
Great miles today despite all obstacles! Remember, with Taters gone, you are always chatting with us even if we can't help you decide where to pitch your tent. Hike on into the beautiful mountains. Tortoise
I can't imagine how good that bed feels after twenty-five miles of mostly highway walking. I'm glad you got a nice place to stay. Good luck & Thanks for sharing.
The Wheel of Time series? You're in my old stomping grounds. I recall when I was staying in Victor and was cutting a bunch of firewood thinking, "This would be a real good place to put some air." BTW, some of those old Cripple Creek mines are great place to drop bodies. :)
Have you tried the Murderbot series by Martha Wells or the Ancillary Justice series by Ann Leckie? Maybe not as hard science fiction as you may prefer.
Ancillary Justice is my goto example of where I loved the first book and hated the remaining two. I’ve own the murderbot series and I’ve listened to a few of them but while I enjoy the concept the books haven’t clicked with me so far
My dad worked for a pharmaceutical company and said they’d hear from the authorities right away if there was any run off, but also that area has an underground trash fire closing in on nuclear waste! lol and locals nearby have disproportionate cases of cancer that they’re trying to litigate. I think anything around humans is extra sketchy. So even if the mine is on the up and up, I’d have a hard time trusting it too. At this point, I think areas where water can be trusted are truly so rare that the only reason to risk it outside of said areas would be if there aren’t other options. If you can score a golf ball, it’s the best for rolling out the foot. Lightweight too.
Dresden was great. I read the entire series years ago before his hiatus and listened to the two since he came back as audiobooks. We’ll see if he releases the rest on any sort of reasonable schedule
The Monsoon is an interesting time of year. Its nice because it breaks the summer heat for good, though at the same time beckons the arrival of autumn, and can get downright chilly. Last night here outside of Grand Junction, CO we had off and on lightning, thunder and rain all night, and this morning is probably the coolest morning since spring. I do love the pre-dawn thunderstorms though.....
With all the mining going on out west it always concerns me about any water source you may encounter. Oh look the sun is going down I better pull out my head lamp then all of a sudden you realize you dont need your headlamp because you have a nice green glow all around you.
There tend to be larger swaths of wilderness areas and mountains out west making it easier to trust the water. As long as it’s coming from uphill and there isn’t a marked mine it’s usually going to be fine
The views are spectacular. On another note, I'm a huge Malazan fan, but that would not be the series I would choose if I was hiking with audiobooks. Have you tried Joe Abercombrie? All his books are spectacular. And the audiobooks are so damned good. Start with the First Law Series, listen to the standalones, then go to Age of Madness. There's a lot of goodness there, and it's not too dense, but still some great listens.
Yep. Listened to the first law books twice and the half series once. Top tier especially with the narrator. Malazan actually worked well for me on audiobook but Jen ended up DNF’ing despite it being the second time for both of us
I switched back to my StormLine Stretch. The lightheart gear is just too much of a sweat sock and blows around too much in the wind. See that storm the day Jen went ahead
You missed the entrance to Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp. Probably the last thing Mennonite you'll see on your hike unless an occasional bakery or such in Amish country.
@@ripvanrevs I'm sure they do somewhere. There might be a store by Westcliff. I think there's a bakery there. I know there's a bakery in Del Norte run by Haldeman Mennonites.
I’ve been waiting on that new Bobiverse and a few others. I bought the first of a few different BV Larson series during the cash sale this year but I haven’t jumped into any of them yet. I’ve been having some issues sticking with books due to the struggles recently
What is "wiggy??" .. I have many MSR STOVES ,, A variety over 55+ years ...no problems ..other than jet cleaning on the International...Same Pocket Rocket Deluxe for past 4 years , no issues ... .. Soto Amicus ,, seems to be popular lately ..
I’ve had a good number of MSR stoves also and when it just used to be a matter of being out 40 some weekends a year they held up great. Since I’ve been basically living off of them full time since 2019 there is a lot of gear that doesn’t last near as long as before
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Hwy 67 south of Divide, east side of the road, IIRC. I think it was a pipe coming out of the ground, an artesian well or something of the sort, ran 24/7. I’ve mostly avoided the franchise written books in recent years. I read a bunch of them as a teenager including more of the random Star Trek and Star Wars books than I should probably admit but I feel like they often felt more like someone writing for a paycheck. Though I do remember the Doom novelization being fun
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Ya. It's been a few years but there are several that aren't teen shlock novels. The Forerunner Saga / Greg Bear were very good. There were a couple others that weren't "Master Chief" novels that I thought were well written.

Have a good hike, Matt! I’m loving the Colorado scenery.
The views were so beautiful! I’m glad that you had another nice stay at a hotel. Take care and stay safe. God bless!
I'm finally caught up on the series, having started watching a couple of weeks ago. This has been an insane journey. Thanks for sharing it!
You're doing great, the Aspen leaves are still green!
Day 135. Keep pushing Bishop! The rewards of the journey are many.
The mountains with the views, towns and people are so damn cool. I do miss living in Colorado sometimes
keep on moving Matt! it never ceases to amaze me how much people don't understand the Enviromental consequences of mineral extraction.
On the other hand, there wouldn't be any hotels to sleep in!
Hey Matt, 25 miles of huff and puff, narrow shoulders to walk, masochist paradise!

I will be on more trails further west. They just wanted to hit a few of the towns along the way I guess
Here's towards the next audio book 📖
Very kind of you, Jessie

Great job recharge and push on ,safe travels !
I have to say that the Katy trail, and the Colorado videos have by far been the best scenery
Those flash Colorado thunderstorms! I was in a nasty one way above Telluride that washed out the trail. Didn't think I'd make it down.
Because of my health, I can't hike like Matt, but I sure can get some good Audible book suggestions!
Matt, it is so much fun listening to you rationalize reasons to get a hotel other than a perfectly rational desire for a bed and a hot shower
Good 'Ol Microtel.....!!! That hwy 24 kinda sucks! Nice work.....
I live in Woodland Park.Would have been cool to see you pass through
Great job!

Read it already about 1.7 times. (Wasn’t finished when I first read it)
I love watching you masochists. You are creating a historical document.
Thanks
My mom told me of a story where they ran out of gas and literally "rolled" into a gas station in Cripple Creek.

Try the Dresden series lots of books funny and easy listen, Jim Butcher

12:30 looks like you found the poorly maintained bicycle lane they constructed several years ago.
Have you ever checked out the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. Nice long books once you get into it

With all of the trails in cripple creek, divide, and into Woodland Park it seems strange the ADT uses state highways there…
It would annoy the hell out of me to head EAST from Divide to Woodland Park.
Just wait until you have to go south east to get to garden of the gods…
In situations where I need distraction but can give full attention either, I really like to reread audiobooks.

Hey Matt, is everything okay?
Came down sick after Colorado Springs so things are going to be a bit disrupted
Painful road walk
Just wait until the next day…
There is, or was, a good water tap south of Divide, lots of people would stop and fill up there. Not sure if it's still open to the public.
Any idea where it was? I didn’t see anything on the map
