  • In this one we take on the famous Southern Crossing in the Tararua ranges.
Ran into the classic assortment of weather seen in the Tararuas but were given a break in a weather allowing us to do a 12-hour day from Kime hut to Kaitoke road end via Alpha hut on day 3.
    Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for posting. Took me back more than 50 years when 4 of us did a BIG weekend. Came in at Kaitoke on Friday night, by passed Dobsons and overnighted at Tauherenikau Hut. Next day walked up the valley towards Cone, up onto Marchant Ridge, past Bull Mound, Alpha, Dress Circle and rolled a couple of boulders down Mt Hector. Weather was brilliant. Could see the Kaikouras. Along the Main Range, past Tarn Ridge Hut and overnight at Shoulder Knob. Sunday dropped down to Waitewaiwai and out to Otaki Forks. Great memories. Thanks again.

Back in February I did a section of the Southern Crossing: from Waiohine-past Cone Hut to overnight at Alpha hut, past Kime then horrendous ridge in gale force winds and zero visibility to Maungahuka hut for the night. Definitely not recommended in such dangerous conditions. I learnt a lesson and live to tell the tale!
What is it like on Marchant ridge? From what you said it can’t be too bad yet I’ve heard others saying how steep and muddy it is.
You were so lucky having family waiting at Kaitoke otherwise I can’t see any reasonable way to get back to the start. That’s the problem with linear routes.
I see you didn’t suffer from cramp this trip. What do you put that down to???

@@jeffc1604 Yeah those tops can get dangerous very quick definitely want to pick your days heading along them…Marchant ridge going south was fine I think people make it seem worse than what it is, going the other way wouldn’t be very fun but the way we went wasn’t bad at all.
I did get terrible cramps on the first day which I didn’t add into the video but second and third day they didn’t give me any grief which was good.
      Thanks for the comment👍

I'm an Aussie who lived in Shannon for about the last 4 years and just by looking up at the Mitre and experiencing the weather at 65 metres above sea level in Shannon that this Aussie boy should not attempt any stupid trek past the golf course at the end of the street.
