the cornell method is by far the single most useful note taking method for lectures. I'm surprised by this video. Medical Professionals, Med Students, Pre Meds. Outline Method is difficult to do during a lecture. Whoever is saying the Conrell method is stupid needs a reality check. Highly efficient.
I have a different perspective: take notes twice. First, take almost verbatum notes or just ensure everything is down on paper (written), while trying to pay attention and underline or bold what is emphasized. Then, later that day (absolutely that day, not tomorrow), re-write a highly condensed version of the notes. This involves focusing on what is important and summarizing in my own words. This is also the second time I have reviewed the information, and this second note-taking step is also essentially a review step. I then file these secondary notes as a section in a binder before the class notes and typically don't review the original notes again unless a friend missed the lecture. Yes, this is a lot to do, but I found this process was best for me and helped me a lot.
I used to do this in high school and it was awesome for memorization and understanding overall concepts, but with 5 courses in university I immediately found it overwhelmingly time consuming. Summarization of key notes after a lecture is a great tip though, maybe I’ll incorporate that into my study routine!

@@thatoneuser8600 Everyone has a different study method what’s important is finding something that works for you, and it’s always a good thing to involve active recall in your study in someway. I am a medical student and for me my notes are indispensable but I also know fellow students who don’t make notes at all, or other ones who just make active recall sheets. It all depends on you

Audio record your lectures! It's a life saver, especially for professors who have very dense lectures. Take notes too and use the audio to fill in gaps as needed

For me, taking notes while listening, even if my notes are crap, is mainly coz it helps me pay attention (but sometimes I barely write anything if there's slides or something visual to look at, so I just focus on paying attention and only take notes of specific key words or points). those notes aren't good enough for revision though but actually that's okay. during revision time, I prefer to take my time to re-read or re-listen to lectures and make good notes then, I'm actively summarising, and the writing process helps me remember it. So it's like first time is about listening and grasping the concepts, second time is about memorising the details and synthesising the information.

As an artist, I find doing detailed drawings helps me remember anatomy. It's impossible to not remember the parts of the brain after drawing it for 1-2 hours, haha.
I'll use both methods. Cornell during the class and outline after the class specifically when I'm studying at home. In my perspective, this is so as Cornell is efficient during the class as you can't classify easily what's much more important than the other things your teacher is talking about, just let him finished teaching. Your teacher might emphasized something, then emphasized another one, it's unpredictable. Your teacher might tell something very important later on and you just realized that it's much more important than the one you wrote first so you need to reorganize it(if you're using outline during the class) and this could mean hundreds of erasures so Cornell is good during the class as this doesn't require a hierarchy. Outline is efficient when I know what's much more important and put the information from the Cornell notes I've made during the class into a hierarchy of information that I can easily remember. What has always worked for me regardless of subject or tool (paper/computer) is first transcribing as much as possible without overthinking if something's important/interesting enough. When in doubt I write it down. Then I create a condensed/reorganized version of my notes while studying, along with other active practices (answering questions, testing myself, etc.). By far my favorite tool for organizing notes is a computer hooked up to 2 monitors so I can have reference material (original notes/digital textbook/outside resource etc.) maximized on 1 monitor & note-taking software on the other.
I use an iPad and Apple Pencil. I type my notes first, then condense my typed notes into concise hand-written notes. Then use quizlet to memorize facts, concepts and definitions. EDIT: I have replaced Quizlet with Anki - for it is vastly superior in every way.

Another superb video! Writing via Cornell method still is my go-to note-taking technique, since it has helped me throughout most of my quizzes and exams.
Handwritten notes are more memorable and customizable then digital - Handwritten is a win for me! The less I have to touch my phone or a laptop the better.
Is it possible for you to do a video that is literally a live example of pre-class prep, in class notes, following class synthesis, Flashcards making, and revision? A lot of people give great advice on how to study on RUclips, but they are all abstracted instead of walking through the process with a real, live subject.
Gosh, I would love a video like that. Since I literally have trouble following steps unless demonstrated to me, that would be very helpful. I'm not sure if they're allowed to do that though, but fingers crossed 🤞
Just took my second midterm and I feel like I need to make some changes from this video! I’m doing well but having to study really “hard” before exams but I think a lack of synthesizing and too much transcribing of notes is to blame. Thank you!
I use my iPad and pencil. When I use my iPad, I open up split screen and on the left have their powerpoints up, on the right I have my notes app. I also have my text book open underneath the iPad and quickly highlight subjects. After school, I take all 3 (PowerPoint, notes, and book) and combine them in a note book. To study, as I review my notebook I have a blank piece of paper and I write as I try to remember details without looking at the next page

I have ADHD and I always wondered why I hated the Cornell method since grade school. After being diagnosed nothing changed with that method, even though all my teachers told me it was the best. Thank you so much for helping me understand why this was never the right strategy for me!
I am not a medical student, but I'm trying to teach myself electronics because when I was in school I got intimidated by the math and gave up on it, I always regretted that and now have a bit more time to re learn things, I have a feeling this will help greatly, thanks for the work you do.
I've noticed what works best for me is not taking too many notes during class, just adding things the teacher says that are not in the book. Then, when it's time to study, I sum up the class into my own words.

Surface books are quite nice since you can type with a tactile keyboard and draw using the touchscreen. It helps me so much to have a physical keyboard!
I take handwritten notes on a Remarkable 2 tablet, making a few drawings and charts along the way. I then export the notes to Google Drive or Notion to organise them. You can export them as PDFs when there are lots of drawing, or convert them to searchable text. That solution works well for me. Thank you very much to the OP, very useful video.

Dr Jubbal, I bet you can’t help me so far no one has but here goes. I’m a single parent to 2 amazing teenagers. In order to meet the needs of mortgage, groceries, family heath insurance, orthodontics payments and teenagers athletic, music and scholastic activities I work as the director of nutrition and diabetes at a hospital averaging 60 hours/week. I am able to dedicate 20 hours/week for mcat studying from courses I have not taken in 20+ years. I wish to be an endocrinologist. I have a hard time with mcat studying as my mind in full of work and kids and elderly parent concerns. I’ve listened to all your videos and love every single one. I’m on my 7th and final mcat attempt. I’ve gone from 471 to 490 but obviously still not good enough. The coronovirus precautions has opened up another 10 hours study/week where I don’t have to attend kids events. What advice can u give me please and thank you
my favorite thing to do is to type notes and then rewrite them in a notebook dedicated to that class. it works well for me, i’m in high school, looking to go to college and then med school. so thank you for the help!
I take note from samsung galaxy tab s7 at University. I can use it as a tablrt and as a pc. Once back home i read it and rewrite the notes in my notebook. This actually is helping me to find easy what i study.
This video is amazing what would be cool is if you could real time "watch" a lecture and take notes and then do your follow up with those notes . Make this information practical. Summarize every paragraph in one or two sentences chain link them into one concept while understanding and actively thinking through each paragraph then any questions pull up chat gpt tab copy and paste and ask it to “explain it to you as if you were 5 years old for the most simple context of the note” Thank me later
I just take messy but still organized notes with two colored pens using the outline method. When I feel the need to re-do some of them, I get fancier and use highlighters, more symbols and maybe drawings. Another thing that I like to do, specifically with textbooks, is to read and comprehend what's written, draw an arrow from the paragraph(s) that I've read and summarize the info with my own words in a way that's creative/funny. It works perfectly.
I think the way you take notes evolves along with your personal growth. - When you're young and have a lot of time (eg, students, even med students, who I once was), you can take notes twice. Regardless of the methods, take a simple quick notes when you listen to a lecture or read a book, then review the notes again, highlight important things or summarize things that connect. To learn is to forget, so don't push yourself to hard just to memorize everything, because when you graduate and start work, many of the things you've studied will become useless (trust me, lol) - but you'll need them to understand the fundamental knowledge and shape your professional mindset. - When you've grown up, you often study with purposes and you approach a course or a lecture with certain backgrounds. So think before you take notes, like the aim of your notes (to answer a particular question, to learn something new, or just to get to know something strange, conflicting, interesting, or intriguing). Now when I've been working for years, I find it so hard to go through a formal course, take notes of everything including things I have known and try to develop a new framework of concepts for the knowledge that's been inside of me for years. If you can do so, that's good; but if you can't, just don't do it. Just write the things you think are new or important to you, save the lectures and the notes, and one day, when you need to solidify or standardize your knowledge, spend some free time reviewing and summarizing. Teaching is a very effective way, because when you teach, you must be serious and responsible, so look for some juniors (but only do this if you're certain your knowledgs is accurate enough to be a mentor). Just my personal experience. It might not apply to others, but I'd love to share.
I typically write all of my notes by hand and essentially copy down whatever the lecturer says, using different colored pens to emphasize whatever is important. This is done just to get down the lecture of the day so that I could review later. When it’s time for me to review, I use a laptop and more paper to get down every question and all of the notes based off of that day’s lecture. These “review notes” are like scratch paper; this is what I refer to when reviewing because they have all of my questions with answers based on the lecture, all while being much more lengthy to help me understand everything.

The first step I would suggest the process of elimination, divide them in topics like important, not important, useful to read , then ----- for the important topic make typed outline or notes + your simplest understanding of the notes in hand writing + diagram -------- for useful to read =make head topic & write the important one in 1 or 2 line and mention the references like page number of books , writers , or date of the lecture and any link topics ...... For not important write down all the headings and keep it at the front of your notes because you might have to put them in the important section ...
As how much I love outline method, it only effective with organized topics. A topics that already structured from up then down to bottom. Most of my lectures brought the subject with inorder main topic to outlined and whether it was sub-topic or just fun-fact. *So I use **_mind-map_** method.* Personally speaking, It's match my spontaneous trait to take notes in free-form without need to worry about the run down structure. Also it's recommended if you want to take notes from a RUclips videos such as TedTalk. The mind-map can be combined with outline as well. In my workflow, after finishing the mind-map, I then organized it like a summary sheet.
In terms of avoiding/minimising distractions, I have my iPad entirely dedicated to study, no social media or games just email and work (study) related apps and have found that helps me as I only associate my iPad with studying. I am watching this video so obviously it’s no where near flawless but definitely find that strategy has helped me in the past couple years :)

For studying I have such a long way to go cause I basically write a big summary of everything and try to structure it nicely (especially now with open book exams), then I also listen to the lecture and write it down in one note. Later I write the most important information of the summary into one note aswell (often into a Mindmap) and lastly, I do notion questions to really test my understanding of it and sometimes it's much easier to get myself to go through those questions than to actually read through my notes
For people that cannot process words as fast like me who learned english as a third language, you can always transcribe/record a lecture and then after class, listen back to the lecture/read over your transcribed notes and rewrite them in your own words
What i do is... handwrite notes on my ipad with notability during lectures and then when i get home, i look at those notes and use notions feature with toggles (uses active learning) and create questions with the notes i took today.

For taking notes digitally you can also use a graphic tablet with o without a screen, it is cheaper (if you choose a cheap one of course) and you can use it right with you PC or laptop.

I actually make basic notes first . Then copy to canva and make them later . Since i only have a laptop . And grafic design stimulates my brain . I absorb information and understand better this way .
Get an iPad Pro... you can type your notes when you want to and write them conveniently with a plethora of colors and highlighter functions at your disposal.
bumblybird i have the 2019 ipad pro, and i never bought the apple keyboard. It takes some practice but its possible to just use the on screen keyboard fast
Really there is no right or wrong, it's more about what works for your brain (The X in the thumbnail is what helps me while the other strategies I end up distracted or just getting bored)
I have 2 classmates that are in the top. The first one is the one who’s notebook is SO messy filled with info. They basically filled/colored the whole page with highlighter. It’s not the aesthetic type notes but so messy. And the second one only has little writtings on her notebooks. And I kinda was shock.
I used to do even less than the second example you gave. I just read my textbook and in a certain amount of paragraphs I drew an arrow and summarized the information with a few and my own words (even used slangs) to read it after. My notebooks from eighth and nineth grade are almost empty and I still managed to have my best results ever in terms of tests and exams.
I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite which has S-Pen included. It's simply amazing for note taking and studing ! I've tried different note taking apps but at the end I found Samsung Notes to be the best, for this particular tablet at least. Conversion to PDF it's super easy and after conversion I can send it to my google drive without leaving the app! I would really reccomand this combo for students with a limited budget ( 350-400 euros ).

For note taking, if your budget is low , you can use a graphics tablet (I got mine for 47$) and connect it to your laptop instead of going for an iPad. I am not a pro artist or anything to rate it properly, but I think the handwriting experience is very good and enough friction is there to write properly. I also have a Lenovo M10 Tab with the stylus, but handwriting on it feels very 'glassy', so I hardly use it for notes. If you want to stick to a tablet instead and want a really good handwriting experience, then go for an iPad.
I highly recommend digital notes making on tablet it is best way to remove time consumption and exhaustion in writing paper notes especially in college!!!
I was taking notes on this video and right when he got to the Cornell Notes I paused, and copied the diagram he provided. After painstakingly writing/drawing the whole Cornell Notes diagram he said DON'T use it. lesson learned, I will first watch all the way through first before writing notes on it..
If you're cheap like me and already have a laptop, get a drawing pad! You can get one for like $30 and they make it super easy to reorganize/review your notes

After I study everything, I like to summarize everything by explaining it to myself as if I'm discussing the topic to myself. Sometimes I'd also annotate my notes. I exert a lot of effort into studying and note-taking but only when I really like the topic. Otherwise, I'd just get really lazy and make some terrible notes that make me even the more uninterested on the topic itself and end up regurgitating most of it

The Outline method for note-taking (using tab, dots, etc to mark subtopics or helping argument) Note interacting and reflecting when revising the notes, active learning not passive There are two types of subjects: Fact Heavy (History, Biology) and Concept Heavy (Mathematics). For Concept Heavy +active learning (not copying, but thinking, shortening and telling in your own words, making comparisons and tables) summary sheets are ideal. Synthesis questions (objective ones), which you can make by yourself. Flashcards.
As a windows lover, I use Lenovo Yogabook (128GB version) for taking note. It's cheaper than surface, lightweight and the writing experience is excellent. The only problem is battery, but I can handle it by bring 1 10000 mA portable mobile power. The keyboard is small and suitable for women.
In my country teachers teach you the outline method since, I don't know, 3rd grade? They tell you "write that point" explain, tell you to write a subpoint and etc. That from 3rd grade on. Some have criteria how the notes - the "plan", should look, but most let you do whatever you want. Especially in high school. Having seen Ali Abdaal's evidence-based studying techniques, i'm trying out cornell method notes with synthesis questions on the que column and outline method in the main note taking section.
Unlike you said the Mueller and Oppenheimer study did compare the „product function“ of longhand and Laptop notes by letting the students review their notes before testing. Students taking longhand notes did significantly better in all of mixed, factual and conceptual knowledge, even when all students had reviewed their notes be it handwritten or typed.
I‘m sorry but it seems like you just read the abstract of the Mueller study and didn’t actually read it. Without studying there was no difference between conceptual and factual knowledge when comparing long hand and laptop notes. But *with* studying, and that’s how most students will use their notes, hand written notes were shown to be superior.

I used to do this in high school and it was awesome for memorization and understanding overall concepts, but with 5 courses in university I immediately found it overwhelmingly time consuming. Summarization of key notes after a lecture is a great tip though, maybe I’ll incorporate that into my study routine!

Audio record your lectures! It's a life saver, especially for professors who have very dense lectures. Take notes too and use the audio to fill in gaps as needed

For me, taking notes while listening, even if my notes are crap, is mainly coz it helps me pay attention (but sometimes I barely write anything if there's slides or something visual to look at, so I just focus on paying attention and only take notes of specific key words or points). those notes aren't good enough for revision though but actually that's okay. during revision time, I prefer to take my time to re-read or re-listen to lectures and make good notes then, I'm actively summarising, and the writing process helps me remember it. So it's like first time is about listening and grasping the concepts, second time is about memorising the details and synthesising the information.

As an artist, I find doing detailed drawings helps me remember anatomy. It's impossible to not remember the parts of the brain after drawing it for 1-2 hours, haha.

I'll use both methods. Cornell during the class and outline after the class specifically when I'm studying at home. In my perspective, this is so as Cornell is efficient during the class as you can't classify easily what's much more important than the other things your teacher is talking about, just let him finished teaching. Your teacher might emphasized something, then emphasized another one, it's unpredictable. Your teacher might tell something very important later on and you just realized that it's much more important than the one you wrote first so you need to reorganize it(if you're using outline during the class) and this could mean hundreds of erasures so Cornell is good during the class as this doesn't require a hierarchy. Outline is efficient when I know what's much more important and put the information from the Cornell notes I've made during the class into a hierarchy of information that I can easily remember. If any of you have a good suggestion, do let me know. :)

What has always worked for me regardless of subject or tool (paper/computer) is first transcribing as much as possible without overthinking if something's important/interesting enough. When in doubt I write it down. Then I create a condensed/reorganized version of my notes while studying, along with other active practices (answering questions, testing myself, etc.). By far my favorite tool for organizing notes is a computer hooked up to 2 monitors so I can have reference material (original notes/digital textbook/outside resource etc.) maximized on 1 monitor & note-taking software on the other.
I use an iPad and Apple Pencil.
I type my notes first, then condense my typed notes into concise hand-written notes. Then use quizlet to memorize facts, concepts and definitions.
EDIT: I have replaced Quizlet with Anki - for it is vastly superior in every way.

Another superb video! Writing via Cornell method still is my go-to note-taking technique, since it has helped me throughout most of my quizzes and exams.
Handwritten notes are more memorable and customizable then digital - Handwritten is a win for me! The less I have to touch my phone or a laptop the better.
Is it possible for you to do a video that is literally a live example of pre-class prep, in class notes, following class synthesis, Flashcards making, and revision? A lot of people give great advice on how to study on RUclips, but they are all abstracted instead of walking through the process with a real, live subject.

I use my iPad and pencil. When I use my iPad, I open up split screen and on the left have their powerpoints up, on the right I have my notes app. I also have my text book open underneath the iPad and quickly highlight subjects. After school, I take all 3 (PowerPoint, notes, and book) and combine them in a note book. To study, as I review my notebook I have a blank piece of paper and I write as I try to remember details without looking at the next page

I've noticed what works best for me is not taking too many notes during class, just adding things the teacher says that are not in the book. Then, when it's time to study, I sum up the class into my own words.

I take handwritten notes on a Remarkable 2 tablet, making a few drawings and charts along the way. I then export the notes to Google Drive or Notion to organise them. You can export them as PDFs when there are lots of drawing, or convert them to searchable text. That solution works well for me. Thank you very much to the OP, very useful video.

In order to meet the needs of mortgage, groceries, family heath insurance, orthodontics payments and teenagers athletic, music and scholastic activities I work as the director of nutrition and diabetes at a hospital averaging 60 hours/week. I am able to dedicate 20 hours/week for mcat studying from courses I have not taken in 20+ years. I wish to be an endocrinologist. I have a hard time with mcat studying as my mind in full of work and kids and elderly parent concerns. I’ve listened to all your videos and love every single one. I’m on my 7th and final mcat attempt. I’ve gone from 471 to 490 but obviously still not good enough. The coronovirus precautions has opened up another 10 hours study/week where I don’t have to attend kids events. What advice can u give me please and thank you

I take note from samsung galaxy tab s7 at University. I can use it as a tablrt and as a pc. Once back home i read it and rewrite the notes in my notebook. This actually is helping me to find easy what i study.

Cornell method is absolutely a very good method to use, and you can use it in conjunction with outline method or others like flow
I just take messy but still organized notes with two colored pens using the outline method. When I feel the need to re-do some of them, I get fancier and use highlighters, more symbols and maybe drawings. Another thing that I like to do, specifically with textbooks, is to read and comprehend what's written, draw an arrow from the paragraph(s) that I've read and summarize the info with my own words in a way that's creative/funny. It works perfectly.

I think the way you take notes evolves along with your personal growth.
- When you're young and have a lot of time (eg, students, even med students, who I once was), you can take notes twice. Regardless of the methods, take a simple quick notes when you listen to a lecture or read a book, then review the notes again, highlight important things or summarize things that connect. To learn is to forget, so don't push yourself to hard just to memorize everything, because when you graduate and start work, many of the things you've studied will become useless (trust me, lol) - but you'll need them to understand the fundamental knowledge and shape your professional mindset.
- When you've grown up, you often study with purposes and you approach a course or a lecture with certain backgrounds. So think before you take notes, like the aim of your notes (to answer a particular question, to learn something new, or just to get to know something strange, conflicting, interesting, or intriguing). Now when I've been working for years, I find it so hard to go through a formal course, take notes of everything including things I have known and try to develop a new framework of concepts for the knowledge that's been inside of me for years. If you can do so, that's good; but if you can't, just don't do it. Just write the things you think are new or important to you, save the lectures and the notes, and one day, when you need to solidify or standardize your knowledge, spend some free time reviewing and summarizing. Teaching is a very effective way, because when you teach, you must be serious and responsible, so look for some juniors (but only do this if you're certain your knowledgs is accurate enough to be a mentor).

I typically write all of my notes by hand and essentially copy down whatever the lecturer says, using different colored pens to emphasize whatever is important. This is done just to get down the lecture of the day so that I could review later. When it’s time for me to review, I use a laptop and more paper to get down every question and all of the notes based off of that day’s lecture. These “review notes” are like scratch paper; this is what I refer to when reviewing because they have all of my questions with answers based on the lecture, all while being much more lengthy to help me understand everything.

The first step I would suggest the process of elimination, divide them in topics like important, not important, useful to read , then ----- for the important topic make typed outline or notes + your simplest understanding of the notes in hand writing + diagram -------- for useful to read =make head topic & write the important one in 1 or 2 line and mention the references like page number of books , writers , or date of the lecture and any link topics ...... For not important write down all the headings and keep it at the front of your notes because you might have to put them in the important section ...
As how much I love outline method, it only effective with organized topics. A topics that already structured from up then down to bottom. Most of my lectures brought the subject with inorder main topic to outlined and whether it was sub-topic or just fun-fact.
*So I use **_mind-map_** method.*
Personally speaking, It's match my spontaneous trait to take notes in free-form without need to worry about the run down structure.
Also it's recommended if you want to take notes from a RUclips videos such as TedTalk.
The mind-map can be combined with outline as well.
In my workflow, after finishing the mind-map, I then organized it like a summary sheet.
In terms of avoiding/minimising distractions, I have my iPad entirely dedicated to study, no social media or games just email and work (study) related apps and have found that helps me as I only associate my iPad with studying.
I am watching this video so obviously it’s no where near flawless but definitely find that strategy has helped me in the past couple years :)

For studying I have such a long way to go cause I basically write a big summary of everything and try to structure it nicely (especially now with open book exams), then I also listen to the lecture and write it down in one note. Later I write the most important information of the summary into one note aswell (often into a Mindmap) and lastly, I do notion questions to really test my understanding of it and sometimes it's much easier to get myself to go through those questions than to actually read through my notes
For people that cannot process words as fast like me who learned english as a third language, you can always transcribe/record a lecture and then after class, listen back to the lecture/read over your transcribed notes and rewrite them in your own words

What i do is... handwrite notes on my ipad with notability during lectures and then when i get home, i look at those notes and use notions feature with toggles (uses active learning) and create questions with the notes i took today.

For taking notes digitally you can also use a graphic tablet with o without a screen, it is cheaper (if you choose a cheap one of course) and you can use it right with you PC or laptop.

i enjoy taking notes to remember what is going on by hand.
I have 2 classmates that are in the top.
The first one is the one who’s notebook is SO messy filled with info. They basically filled/colored the whole page with highlighter. It’s not the aesthetic type notes but so messy.
And the second one only has little writtings on her notebooks. And I kinda was shock.
I used to do even less than the second example you gave. I just read my textbook and in a certain amount of paragraphs I drew an arrow and summarized the information with a few and my own words (even used slangs) to read it after. My notebooks from eighth and nineth grade are almost empty and I still managed to have my best results ever in terms of tests and exams.
I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite which has S-Pen included. It's simply amazing for note taking and studing ! I've tried different note taking apps but at the end I found Samsung Notes to be the best, for this particular tablet at least. Conversion to PDF it's super easy and after conversion I can send it to my google drive without leaving the app! I would really reccomand this combo for students with a limited budget ( 350-400 euros ).

For note taking, if your budget is low , you can use a graphics tablet (I got mine for 47$) and connect it to your laptop instead of going for an iPad. I am not a pro artist or anything to rate it properly, but I think the handwriting experience is very good and enough friction is there to write properly.
I also have a Lenovo M10 Tab with the stylus, but handwriting on it feels very 'glassy', so I hardly use it for notes.
If you want to stick to a tablet instead and want a really good handwriting experience, then go for an iPad.
BTW, you still need a little practice with the graphics tablet to write properly 😅
I Use a Onyx Boox note or Max 2-3 or a Max Lumi 2 for notes. It's an e ink device with virtually no distractions.
I highly recommend digital notes making on tablet it is best way to remove time consumption and exhaustion in writing paper notes especially in college!!!
I was taking notes on this video and right when he got to the Cornell Notes I paused, and copied the diagram he provided. After painstakingly writing/drawing the whole Cornell Notes diagram he said DON'T use it. lesson learned, I will first watch all the way through first before writing notes on it..
If you're cheap like me and already have a laptop, get a drawing pad! You can get one for like $30 and they make it super easy to reorganize/review your notes

Fact heavy concepts would be like flash cards a go to move/ or shorten notes to one page anyway it’s memorized in my head and put on paper.
After I study everything, I like to summarize everything by explaining it to myself as if I'm discussing the topic to myself. Sometimes I'd also annotate my notes. I exert a lot of effort into studying and note-taking but only when I really like the topic. Otherwise, I'd just get really lazy and make some terrible notes that make me even the more uninterested on the topic itself and end up regurgitating most of it

There are two types of subjects: Fact Heavy (History, Biology) and Concept Heavy (Mathematics).
For Concept Heavy +active learning (not copying, but thinking, shortening and telling in your own words, making comparisons and tables) summary sheets are ideal.
Synthesis questions (objective ones), which you can make by yourself.
Flashcards.
As a windows lover, I use Lenovo Yogabook (128GB version) for taking note. It's cheaper than surface, lightweight and the writing experience is excellent. The only problem is battery, but I can handle it by bring 1 10000 mA portable mobile power. The keyboard is small and suitable for women.
In my country teachers teach you the outline method since, I don't know, 3rd grade? They tell you "write that point" explain, tell you to write a subpoint and etc. That from 3rd grade on. Some have criteria how the notes - the "plan", should look, but most let you do whatever you want. Especially in high school. I was taught this:

Honestly, I just don't take notes because if the lecture slides are uploaded, I never look back at my notes. Gotta change before going to med school.
I love this video! I will really apply these concepts to my note taken and i love how you said we should use outline notes! Because I tried the cornell method in my language class(because they said i have to) and it didn't work. Thanks for making this video and for blessing people with the ability to make effective notes.
Having seen Ali Abdaal's evidence-based studying techniques, i'm trying out cornell method notes with synthesis questions on the que column and outline method in the main note taking section.
Unlike you said the Mueller and Oppenheimer study did compare the „product function“ of longhand and Laptop notes by letting the students review their notes before testing.
Students taking longhand notes did significantly better in all of mixed, factual and conceptual knowledge, even when all students had reviewed their notes be it handwritten or typed.
I‘m sorry but it seems like you just read the abstract of the Mueller study and didn’t actually read it. Without studying there was no difference between conceptual and factual knowledge when comparing long hand and laptop notes.
But *with* studying, and that’s how most students will use their notes, hand written notes were shown to be superior.
