Good job!! I’ve always thought that when I’m single digits then I’d start playing the same ball. It’s been 40 years and I still love playing finders brand!!!!!
lol hey man! Whatever makes the round more enjoyable! Finders Brand for the Win!! 👏🏾
You're right about the spin rate on the Kirkland golf balls and it going sideways if you hit it wrong. Still good and cheap balls. Great information and content.
Thanks man! But yeah that’s one thing about Kirklands.. you definitely going to learn how to hit straight. It makes your bad swings feel much worse lol
@@quaypotts 👍
Enjoyed the video! Over the last 10 years I played the Kirklands - the OG then went to vice pro plus and maxfli tours. Went to pro v1s since I get a few dozen as gifts and took advantage of the 3 for 2 deal during the masters this past year. Prefer the feel of the proV1s for sure but distance and spin wise I think the maxfli tours and vice balls are comparable and a better value. Next year I’ll probably go back to the Vice Pro plus or maxfli tours. Can’t shake the feeling I’m overpaying for balls with the pro Vs.
Thanks!
And I agree. I’ve never purchased proVs but it does feel like you’re just over playing for golf balls
When I first started five years ago, I bought 3 5 gallon buckets of balls from a guy that lives just off a golf course until I consistently started shooting in the 90s. Then I started playing Kirkland until consistently breaking 90 and then I switched to Vice pro plus. I love that ball like mentioned in the video sounds a little firm, but all the numbers are amazing. But I’ve recently been playing ProV1X 5a mint reloads for about $30 a dozen and it might be placebo, but I do think they feel a little bit better however, the performance otherwise is the exact same. Though it’s still more expensive than the $27 dozen when Vice runs their special, something about not paying the full $60 feels like you’re getting a better deal lol.
Btw I have 1 5 gallon bucket left. I originally paid $10 for all of them. 😂
Quay, found you after hitting next to you at the range once. The biggest key to improving your game is to play the same ball consistently so you are on the right track picking a ball that makes you want to keep playing and playing that ball consistently. Premium balls are not hype or marketing but they are pricey so I see the reason to step back from them. Distance balls last a long time but don’t check up on shorter shots like a premium ball is the biggest difference I see. If you go back and forth from urethane premium balls and ionomer surlyn cover balls then chipping around the green is drastically different. Keep it up and have a good time.
Oh dope! Were we at Hacienda Range?
And I get what you’re saying. But in terms of all the premium balls that are out there.. is there really a huge difference from a TP5 and a ProV?
Genuinely curious. People do tell me that proVs are better around the greens but they can never actually explain why that is . I feel like they just buy into the hype of what people tell them. Especially because the people that tell me this aren’t the best golfers .. so that’s why I say it’s all marketing.
When you’re pro level status I can see how those little details can make a huge difference but on the other hand I feel that pros are skilled enough to play any ball and control it the way the want.
@@quaypotts the prov vs the tp5 and chrome and Bridgestone tour balls really is splitting hairs but compared to the budget balls is where you really see the difference. I would say on the cheap end you see basically two categories: distance or soft where the distance is a harder ball and the soft is more squishy for feel. If I play a cheap ball then I lean towards the softer ball because it gives a tiny bit more backspin on chip shots but nothing like a tour ball. The titleist trusoft is an example. The taylormade tour response is the best mid tier ball on the market that gives you urethane cover at a cheaper price. The titleist pro v1 left dash and the AVX balls are unicorns for low spin if you want something truly unique. My longes drives are with the AVX and TP5x balls but the AVX gives up a tiny bit of green side spin. Anyways, like I said, play the same ball for a couple months at a time to get the feel and compare it to another ball starting with 100yds and closer. You score closer to the hole so getting the ball to end up where you want and react the way you want are really important. A little click off the putter isn’t a big deal so don’t go off that. And when all is said and done: have fun.
Definitely matters! I play TM TP5x it gives me what I like which is low spin with a higher launch. At end of day, I’m believer being consistent and playing same ball so you know what it does
I definitely believe in being consistent and playing one type of ball. More people need to do that so we stop having people steal golf balls on the course lol .
I been playing for a year now and I love the mizuno 566 was a great ball for me. 21$ a box on Amazon .i currently play the Callaway super soft 360 cause it helps me line up my putt .
Oh nice! I’ve never seen a mizuno ball on the course. lol
And for the Callaway.. did you mean the Chromesoft? Don’t think they make 360 balls for the super soft line.. if they do, it’s news to me! Lol
@@quaypotts yeah chromesoft lol .playas mess up to lol
@@quaypottsmy wife loves the 556 and at$21 a dozen it’s a great deal. I am currently playing the mizuno Tour. They are just as good as the pro v1 and I am getting them for $34 a dozen. I play a used prov1 or mizuno on holes with ob or water.
Once you are loosing 1-2 balls a round or less you should be playing some sort of premium ball. Ball selection should be based on short game and putting mostly.
I'm a novice but I love playing the premium balls lol. Since I still lose balls frequently I'll allow myself a few "premium balls" during a round. If I lose those then it's stictly Kirkland for the rest of that round. Some rounds I lose 0-2 balls, others 6-8.... :(
Yeah this is what I do. But a lot of those ‘golf gurus’ out there says I shouldn’t do that and just stick to 1 ball regardless.. eh. I don’t think it’s quite that serious for me yet. Lol
I'm a huge fan of Vice. I've never used the Air but I really like the Pro and Pro Plus. Srixon has been one I've tried recently that I really like too.
Have a friend that uses Srixon and he swears by it .
Currently playing Maxfli Softfli since I barely started golfing in February of this year and they were on sale. As soon as those 4 dozen run out I have a box of two dozen Vice Pro balls I got on Prime day for $30.
Solid deal! Keep looking for those deals man! 👏🏾👏🏾
TP5x or Pro V1 as my "distance" ball. TP5 for par 3s and short par 4s. Works for me.
Is that because of the spin and being able to hold greens? Or could you explain why the tp5s over proVs around the greens?
@quaypotts Spin. I found the TP5 hold the greens better than a Pro V1 and TP5x. Around the greens, I just do bump and runs, so it doesn't really matter what ball I use for that.
@@bradleyhenry2411mmm solid! Thanks for the info! I wanna test a few different balls around the greens and see if I notice a difference in terms of spin and feel.
Yes, it does matter. For me, if I buy the higher end golf balls, it’s almost a guarantee that I’m going to have the worst day of golf and will lose all 12 golf balls from the box. If I use the balls that I randomly find while I am looking for my lost balls, then I’ll have the best golf day ever and will never lose that ball. That’s why I never buy golf balls anymore.
Lmao !! Listen I 100% agree. The moment you pull out a brand new $5 ball. When you step up to hit it all your thinking is, “please don’t lose this, please don’t lose this!” And then BOOM! The biggest slice of your life! Haha
A ball you don’t care about your swinging free with no care in the world.
Golf Is Stupid! lol just gotta have that same care-free mindset with a premium ball, which is easier said that done lol
LMAO!
Chrome softs my main and kirklands for when I have a chance of losing it in water ect. I’ve had the same dozen of chrome softs for a good min mainly because I hit my driver good and straight a lot of the times which is my only strength in golf atm haha
Ay man.. that’s a good strength to have! lol
Getting off the tee and into the fairway on par4s and 5s is HUGE! so many people add a lot of strokes getting off the tee. I’d take that! lol
@@quaypotts it is too and I’ll hit it nice and be in great position on a par 4 and mess it up every time!!! Lately I think I’m just trying to over swing on my irons or if I do hit it nice it pulls left. Love golf always something to fix haha but I think I’m a get a iron lesson
My opinion might change as I get better, but as an amature I really like matte orange Srixon soft feels. Using one of the lost golfball vendors can get those things for like 60 cents a pop. I just like Srixon because no one at the short game practice area uses my ball so there is never any confusion lol. Gotta say I like the Callaway chrome softs but they are pricier and more popular, maybe for when I am actually playing!
people stealing your ball on the practice greens is a real thing! haha . I'm in the mindset of not switching to a premium ball until the ball you're using is holding your game back. until then, play your cheaper balls lol
Eagle Glen is a beast of a course! I think we've all had rounds where we lose a ton of balls, it happens. Lots of tight courses in SoCal that will eat balls. Looks like native oaks earlier in the video, water all along the left on that hole brings back some traumatic memories haha. Really great quality lighting and video work here.
The only thing for me that matters in a ball is a urethane coating, if its urethane Im into it, otherwise I pass. Compression for me doesnt seem to have a huge impact on performance, from supersofts (50 compression) to vice pro (90 compression) they behave pretty similar. Ive used chrome soft but that was back when they were $35 a box.
Eagle Glen and I have a Love-Hate relationship right now! Haha. Love the course but she puts me through it everytime lol.
And thanks for compliment for the video quality!🙏🏾
And I’ve heard of Urethan Coating but I’m not educated enough on it to even tell you if a ball has it or not lol. I’ve just heard the term before. Sounds like something else I should dive into and go through the research rabbit hole lol.
Appreciate the comment!
I'm a 20 handicap(i only get to play maybe twice a month). I'm on my 4th ball selection, Kirkland, chrome soft, Callaway ERC and now Chrome tour x. My swing speed had increased each time and the ball would literally drop off distance for the spin i created. I'm not consistent enough to manipulate a draw or fade on demand. I can stick a ball and get a lil spin back. And with that being said my driver usually loses my balls (commitment issues)
I feel you with those commitment issues. Im definitely the same way. until that gets fixed, I won't be playing a $5 ball. lol I saw my homeboy shoot a 74 with a Kirkland once. so no one can convince me that it REALLY matters.. work on ball striking and keeping the ball in play before jumping to a premium ball.. that's my take at least lol
Ball does matter. I produce a lot spin and went and had my clubs and shafts looked at. During the fitting the fitter asked me about my ball. Once he was done tweaking shafts and club heads we looked at my ball and still spun it quite a bit. We tried different balls and found that the Pro V1 was the best ball for my game. I was playing Snell MTB-X. I have dropped about 3-4 strokes from my avg score and dropped from an 8.7 to a 5.4 index. Ball does matter.
Interesting. How many balls did you try before coming to the conclusion of the proV?
@@quaypotts quite a few different balls. Pro v1, pro v1x, both callaways, both tp-5’s, bridgestones, vice, snell and a ball i had never heard before called legato.
Golf ball, and grip fittings are two of most overlooked things. Especially for mid handicaps
I’ll be honest. Didn’t know Grip Fottings was even a thing. Lol
@quaypotts yeah, getting your grip dialed in is insanely important. Ball wise you mostly just want to play the same ball as much as possible. But most people dont have grips that fit them properly, one of the biggest jumps I made when it came to gear and improvement on my game was getting my grips and swing weight dialed.
@@laronda10 interesting. so is it just mainly the grip size or is it feel, material etc. that goes into it too? I know for me, depending on the grip feel I'll swing differently. like some grips just aren't comfortable when in my hands.
@quaypotts grip feel is definitely something you'll wanna play with but alot of it is figuring out size and how many wraps is good for you underneath the grip. Like midsized grips were to big for me and I eneded up with standard MCC golf pride grips with +2 wraps under it. You'd be suprised what even just one extra wrap either way will do for you.
I never buy Pro V 1. I always find mine. I found out the end of last year The Bridgestone e12's works best for me. TP5's tour responses are my runner ups.
I've had good episodes with Vice.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Bridgestones
i play 4A pro v1s, $2 a ball and theyve treated me well.
What’s 4A pro v1s?
@@quaypotts they are used Like New balls, pretty much look like a new ball after 3 holes. Minor dirt maybe a couple have a scratch but overall ill take 48 of them for $90 so for me being 25hcp i can feel like im playing top of the line for cheaper
Not just the fact that you will lose them but you may not swing hard enough to compress a Taylor made tp5.
Exactly !! I really feel that people play premium because of ego lol. My boy is like a 20hpc and he swears that he can only play pro v’s because his game benefits from it. 🤷🏾♂️😂
I was using a DTC ball called Sugar Ball - but someone did a review on them - they sold out.. trying the Vice Pro Plus this week
Don’t you hate when that happens?! lol like something, someone makes a video on it now everyone buys it haha
The ball does matter a lot. I play the TP5 and fortunately for me so does a lot of other players at my club. So they lose it - I find it - I save money :).
WINNING Formula! Haha gotta love that!
But why do you play the tp5 and how does it differ from other golf balls? Is it mostly feel?
@@quaypotts The main reason is around the green spin control. I can control wedges and short irons with it better, it feels better for chipping and putting. Also has the desired spin allowing me to shape shots with longer clubs.
@@mikewilliams1479 solid. im going to go test some balls I have on the chipping area and see if I can notice a difference.
@@quaypotts Warning: feel is subjective. Sound has a part to play in feel. If you have access to an accurate launch monitor you can test spin rates.
It almost matters more for the novice… any good player can put any ball where they want.. spinny or non spinny.. 3-5 piece.. your green side spin or workability to shape shots can be more challenging. The novice player doesn’t want to be hitting an extra hard ball like a 5 piece ball or a spinny ball when most novice have a slice off the tee or not a high swing speed. Find a ball that you like that’s rated for your swing speed and play it consistently
I agree with that.
I don’t think many novice players have the swing speed to really compress a premium ball right? That’s from my understanding. I do agree about a spinny ball tho.
@@quaypottsyeah this is wrong.
Firm compression balls are faster and generally longer than something soft across all speed ranges. Not to mention they actually spin around the green.
@@MEAT0 noted! thanks for the info!
An Amateur golfer is simply someone who has never received any remuneration for playing golf. Not one penny, not ever. Ability has nothing to do with it, they play only for the love (agape) of the game.
Technically that is true. I agree but that needs to change . Because someone who shot a 71 and someone who just swung a club for the first time, doesn’t feel right calling both of them amateurs even though ‘technically’ they both are. Needs to change lol
The only thing that matters in amateur golf for all equipment is: (A) You hitting your flight windows and have gaps that work? Good! Then pick whatever (B) Feels best and (C) Looks best.
For golf balls specifically, Titleist is usually best because they have the best QA/QC process. TaylorMade has great customer service if you have a problem. Maxfli QA seems to be better than the other DTC options. Lots of these other brand balls come from the same factories.
What is QA/QC ?
I 100% think it matters…. Different balls spin more then other fly longer then others and just feel different…. All I play is Tp5x for over 10 years I played nothing but pro v1x but now it’s only the Tp5x it’s 100% best ball for my game…. 🙂👍🏼⛳️
Does tp5x give you more spin or more distance?
I feel like both…. I definitely get more distance with it then the pro v1x and I feel like it has slightly more spin around the greens as well. Only thing I found better with the pro v1x is better spin on the 70-100 yard wedge shots I was able to stop the ball quickly and not get as much roll out but overall I like the Tp5x better. I haven’t tried the vice ball maybe I will give it a shot I do like that black and red splatter! 🙂⛳️👍🏼
@@silverlionblades nice! I have a few tp5's .. im going to go test them out on the chipping area and see if I can tell a difference from the vice balls. Those Drippy balls are fun to play with (no Diddy) lol
I appreciate your honest opinion bro! Thank you for actually detailing your way of thinking while you are on your own journey. Hope to play a round with you one day!🫡
Appreciate that bro. I’m just like everyone else and trying to figure things out as I go lol. And what area you in?
