Today we check out 4 techniques you need to know to play fast - in this picking guitar lesson we dissect alternate picking, economy picking, hybrid picking and legato playing and compare them side by side! Here are the timecodes for the individual techniques: Alternate picking - 01:24 Economy picking - 05:55 Hybrid picking - 09:06 Legato playing - 10:49
Thanks for the lesson, Bernth! A question about lessons: is there a place to go to learn more about becoming a student of yours? Thank you so much and love your stuff! 🤘
@@TheTouristArrives Hey, thank you very much for asking that! I have a 10 week course on www.bernth.at with everything concerning modern shred guitar playing - I also publish the tabs, guitar pro files and practice backing tracks for all these videos on www.patreon.com/bernth :) There is also a limited Skype lesson membership right there, still some openings here! Hope that helps :)
Might seem left field but worth looking into Gypsy Jazz picking, similar concept, though more about getting the wrist off the bridge and getting some power behind the attack of the downstrokes through turns of the wrist, similar also to how balalaika players play without a plectrum. Hope that helps!
Great lesson by an awesome teacher. Just found your channel but I had learned more in 1 week from you than the last whole year of searching around RUclips. You Rock, Dude !!
It is funny Bernth, when you play very fast it seems like a magician who makes a trick and no one understand it but are fascinated by this and when you explain it slowly you are the magician who "transform" the trick towards understanding and at this moment everyone in the audience think : " ah o.k that s the trick !!!". Thanks for your work
The teaching, camera views, and graphics are all superb. I just watch too many of yours too quickly. I've got a year's worth of practice in my head and sore fingers already. :)
This....THIS is a tutorial I desperately needed - I have often improvised my soloing, but felt limited or stuck, as you stated - and this is a great practical application for me to improve my speed & clarity. Also, thanks to this, I just subscribed to continue my learning! Thanks Bernth!
Just found your channel and subscribed I’m a bluegrass player finding your lessons so helpful. You really are a great teacher. Really. Thank you for keeping it real.
Thanks man for concision and FOCUS so we can keep up with the convo! Many teachers don't clarify the WHY or the WHAT. While hyper-advanced you're teaching gives one hope that these techniques can be learned if not.mastered taken in small pieces and steps. Super helpful putting "tablature style" fingering patterns with numbers so we can follow what the heck you just did after ya did it!
I have been playing for 30 years and I never heard of economy picking before - wow, thank you so much. This opens up a whole new world in terms of tone. With the angled picking technique used in alternate picking there is always a compromise in terms of tone.
Yep I do agree with a lot of people that has commented on your channel man.... you’re seriously underrated my friend!! Awesome stuff you’re sharing .... I for one really appreciate it!😎 Thx!
Economy was very easy and fast to start using for me but it is somehow changing my brain connections and becomes hard to play a lick again with alternate. Alternate is much harder to pass a certain speed barrier when facing this string change after upstroke, but I find easier to keep the good tempo with alternate. In economy it’s needed somehow to slow down the second downstroke (or upstroke) to keep the tempo and makes a bit irregular motion for the hand, but some licks become really easy... Great video again, I’m on my way to break the 130bpm 16th barrier, still far from the 300... your slow burst exercises are helping me a lot, thanks!
Badass guitar, Bernth. Look Geigeresque. I like the sound and articulation of alternate picking, so it gets my vote. 11k views? Should be 11 million with all likes. Thanks for the lessons!
Hi bernth! It is true that switching from the alternative technique to that of economy picking is difficult at the beginning. Especially when there are not always 3 notes per string. I like hybrid picking, I have to work on it. Tom Quayle is impressive with this technique. It is more difficult for me to go up a range than to go down with this technique. I love your videos and your guitar.
Great subject! Actually every single approach needs to be taught n practice. I personally don’t favor one over the other, it all depends on the phrase n how one wants it to sound. Love all the technics, thank u 😊
Good job dude..👏👍 Very kind of u for sharing with a lovely demo and highlighting the pros and drawbacks in each of the types..Very well-done..👌Warm cheers..😊 Please keep up this sharing mind for long dude..👍 God bless..🙏🎶😊🎸🎊
Thank you Bernth. I'm new to the channel and you've helped me heaps in raising my standards to take on new challenges that you've presented. I am very grateful. Thank you very much! I have studied the alternatiing/sweep technique with Frank Gambale lessons and found that to be really good. I then found Tom Quayle and study his hybrid technique a few years ago. I found that really awesome and too easy to pick up on. Almost felt like I was cheating hahaha. But it works really well and I love both of those techniques. Then the funny thing is that I ran across the up down alternative picking technique and I totally struggle with it. I see the logic in it and that's cool! I quite like the idea of it! But one month into it and I still suck at it. Hahaha. 🙈 It's going to take some time. Keep up the great work! I'm so glad I found your channel!
One thing I do really miss you haven't talk is about the right had 3 finger what is not holding the pick should be straight or like a fist, different players holds different way and the hand dinamics changes alot when your right hand last 3 finger is straight.
Your alternate picking looks like 2 way pickslanting sounds like that's what you use based on what you said before you started talking about economy picking. You should check out troy grady's channel, he talks about all different types of alternate picking techniques

Bernth Brodträger Thank you so much! ❤️
Hey thanks
You're probably the only guitarist on RUclips that doesnt make their lessons boring. Short and straight to to point with everything explained.
Man I wish this guy lived in my town
Why? Weirdo…
@@stoneybologna1019 Nothing wrong with wanting your ass stretched once in a while bro.
Legato Lesson please !! Thanks for everything, one of the best guitar chanel out there
I was doing economy picking without even thinking about it. Didn't know it had a name.
Same. I was like experimenting for easier picking when switching string without knowing it has a name 😅
1:45 oh god that’s better than my normal playing
I think they are all very good techniques, but I find economy picking really interesting, that would be awesome if you made a video all about that!
I'll second that.
