economy picking is something i've always struggled with. I've been a die hard alternate picker for so long that it gets in the way of my economy picking. I'll try this workout and report back. Thanks uncle Ben
Normally if I practice this stuff for hours I can get pretty good at it for that practice session. But then if I leave it for a little while and try to bust it out at a jam session or gig it never seems to work, and the next time I try to practice I feel like I have to start all over again
I know the feeling. You have to be consistent with the practice over a few weeks for it to really have an effect. It's better to distribute those hour long sessions into 10 - or 15-minute sessions every day. It takes a while for your brain to adapt. Also, try making it harder by picking in reverse, i.e. starting with an up-stroke and adding some improvisational elements. Maybe randomly change directions, make up new patterns, etc.
I'd aleays tried to alternate pick until very recently when you did another video on this, it absolutely revolutionise my runs! Only taken me 35 years! 🍻
Ben !!! Thank you so much for offering this !! Your timing is Perfect !! I needed another Economy Picking Exercise to prevent me from saying to Hell with that Technique . No luck until now , with your Video . Thanks for all the work you put into creating all the Video Lessons you make for us all . Hope you're doing well and staying safe . 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Thanks a lot Uncle Ben!! I can relate regarding economy picking usage. I was primarily an alternate picking guy and when I would practice "just" economy picking, it felt less natural and I felt it just wasn't sinking in. When I started incorporating "bursts" of economy, it became more applicable and in the last year, I've seen it pop out more and lately I find myself calling upon it more in my playing. Thank you again for sharing this lesson, I needed this!
Well I am finally getting my guitar in my hands and it took me for ever to not up stroke on the E5 after D6 LoL its such a habit to alternate pick that but I am liking it!! thanks man this will for sure help and clean me up a little to!🤘🤘
So I was just playing the blink 182 song what's my age again with my band today. And the interlude part in the middle of that song is a great example of economy picking. My band who are not as metalized as I am was like whoa you're going to have a hard time with that song! But it's not difficult I don't think anyway. But the key to the interlude in the middle is using economy picking on the it starts on the A string it goes E B G. 11 D. 8. 8 A. 9 9. 9. 9 9 E D U D U D. U D D I know it's not exactly what you are teaching but just an example that without patterning it correctly it would be very difficult. Also without doing other drills I learned from your channel I probably wouldn't have just adapted and got it up to speed nearly as easily.
Just a thought. Economy picking should also be worked out both ways... so, maybe you can descend using economy with a minor alteration: pick up - up when you jump from the higher string to the lower. Granted, it may force alternate picking when running from low to high, but again, introducing 1 extra note (or substracting 1 notes, like Gambale) you can do economy picking going from high to low, and low to high. As Petrucci so wisely said .. you want to be "ambipixtrous"...
I can't focus on the technique due to the awesomeness of the tone. Hollowbody PRS guitars sound insanely good. That's probably why they are so expensive!
The Volcano lick was my first intro to economy picking and unlocked Pandora's box for me. Stoked to have a new lick to add to the Wank Bank. Thx Mr. Uncle Ben.
Your economy picking is dangerously socialist. It is evenly distributed and doesn’t recognize the notes that work harder to make the melody what it is. 😂 . Tio Ben is the bestest.
So I've been practicing economy and sweep picking a lot lately and have gotten pretty decent with it. One small problem, though: now I can't alternate pick those same phrases worth a shit. Example: the major sounding arpeggios near the end of "Ride the Lightning" solo. Am I alone in this or have others had this issue?
Uncle Ben @2 mins in. My little finger is short so wont physically reach the low e string that high up the neck. What to do, just use three fingers when I'm this far up the neck on the low strings or take up drums? Try to use my little finger means dislocating my elbow and playing at step dads had a stroke speed.
You can use 3 finger, sure! Lots of players do. I doubt your little finger is that short, though, it’s really all in hand position. I had a video around 2021 called “hands too small to play guitar? Watch this” or something similar. Watch that one.
@@BenEller Could you do me a huge favour and measure (in mm)your little finger from where it attaches to your hand to the tip? (ie from the base where it connects to the fourth digit) Absolutely convinced your finger are much longer than mine 😛
You created this inspired by Chris Impelitteri's 17 Century Chicken Pickin', dintcha, Uncle Ben? I like it. And if I'm wrong, still the melody reminds me of that, so don't mind me.

This is a really cool exercise for breaking BAD picking habits. Keep making us better, Uncle Ben!!!
More to come!
Lmao, that reference came outta nowhere. Of course it had to be breaking bad...

That’s exactly how my teacher taught me! Alternate picking was a must!!

Thanks, Uncle Ben!
Love the paintbrush analogy
Thanks Uncle Ben for the inspiration I always find some useful ways to play in your videos painting a much smoother picture of musicianship

With my limited talent budget, economy picking is all I can afford

Actually sounds like Giorgio Moroder a bit. From the movie Electric Dreams! If you’re old enough to remember it.
Dude. This channel is THE shit.
Another Amazing Lesson !! 🎸
Thanks Uncle Ben!
You consistently put out awesome video after awesome video.
😍👍👍

Dude I LOVE that guitar!!
My alternate picking identifies as economy picking.
Hey Ben thank you so much for your help you are great my brother. How do you get that lead tone it is killer.
Thanks bud thats all Axe FX 3.
Yin Yang Milkshake is a big dude.
The Volcano lick was my first intro to economy picking and unlocked Pandora's box for me. Stoked to have a new lick to add to the Wank Bank. Thx Mr. Uncle Ben.
Great video Ben. I have that guitar and an AXE FX III but I DON'T" have your playing ability.

hahahaha
Tio...Bernie???
These unheralded notes are surely going to rebell.
Resentment will grow until one day the hard working notes will rebel. And then burn a spliff.

Dude, Guitar Scientist. Way better than some sharpie.
Hi Ben, do you release the axe fx presets you used for this demo? Thanks a lot!
