Like many other posters here, this was also my first Todd/Utopia album- I had managed to wear the grooves off three copies (though the tonearm on my CS515 did its best to keep on track) before I bought the CD copy.
Bolt ahead some 30+ years and I met Roger Powell, purely by chance, at my workplace. He was whimsically amusing as he guessed correctly that I was wondering if he could be "the" Roger Powell. He introduced himself by name, and added that he had been a musical cohort of TR. "Of course!" I exclaimed. "Adventures is one of my all-time faves!" He could only chuckle with me; how many times has he had the very same exchange with other fans over the years? A true gentleman, it was an honor to meet him in that fashion. And, while Utopia and his other musical projects have been inspiring some three generations of fans, and he has been extremely busy in other successful endeavors in the years since, he is still honoring that connection that he, TR, Willie, Moogy, Kevin, Kasim and the rest had back in the day. You have to love the guy!
This music is still way ahead of it's time
Todd. Pure fucking genius.
absolutely ~
It's hard to be bigger than 4 people at the same time...
yenius
Been listening to this album since it's release. Never get's old. Utopia were all superior musicians. Can't ask for better with Todd manning the lead. I only wish they had more success.
They are an acquired taste... I've been a faithful fan since 1973
@@lilyradloff2377 THIS^
Wow,that's a long time,
@@lilyradloff2377 Most people I've met who like Utopia are quite bright or very much musicheads.
2023 still not old, in fact the opposite
I still remember seeing one of his first concerts in NYC in the early 1970's just Todd , a guitar , a piano , and a reel to reel recorder with pre recorded tunes he played along with. Turned my wife into a major Todd Fan as well as his European sound man opened up a theatre in 2011 and Todd was the first act to play. As my wife is disabled in a wheel chair Todd did something he never does , changed his set to include medley from AWATS dedicated to her. Hoping his UTOPIA Tour stops in to play and that my wife gets out of the medical facility to see him.
In 2008 I rented a car and drove 3 hours to Nashville to catch a plane to Chicago...I then took a train downtown...and then a cab to my hotel in Lincoln Park....the next night....I walked about 6 blocks to see Todd at the Park West...for agreat show......my friends and family thought I'd lost my mind....I did not even try to explain......
This is a masterful album. Never get bored listening to it.
A classic album! Most of the songs sound like big radio hits. I played this quite a lot in the early 80's.
I was 19 when this was released, now I am fifty eight. A long time to not hear this beautiful music. I keep toads as pets, they bring me a glimpse into Utopia.
Is that glimpse after you lick them lol
Can't count the number of people I turned onto Utopia with this album. Been listening to it 40+ years strong!
Songs for the bedroom in the basement....hey don't bogart that joint man...!
I wrote Todd Rundgren a three page letter in 1979 concerning all the synchronicities I discovered in my favourite film "2001: A Space Odyssey".His PA at Panacea Management wrote me a charming letter saying Todd had read my letter with interest and made a few jocular quips about our water draining counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere, then less than a year later, Utopia released "The Road to Utopia" which had this obvious reference to Stanley Kubrick's watershed film as the cover and I recalled my letter to him in late 1979!
That's so cool ! It's true though when you flush a toilet in Australia the water goes counter clockwise !!!
I wrote Bearsville Records, just prior to this one’s release, was working for a non-profit publication in N.Y., around the age of 17…& was sent a promo vinyl 12”….I had seen at least 3-4 gigs,(Todd & comp.) so I really liked getting it as a comp. I should have kept writing other record companies….
Spent many night's at sea listening to this cassette. Todd is a true star!
My first Utopia album, and the disc that launched my 30+ year obsession with Todd Rundgren!
My first was the Utopia album in 82! Then I found all the older stuff back to Oops wrong planet.
@@tt14life90 The previous two albums to oops wrong planet are amazing, Ra and Utopia are really something else, specially the latter.
So this is how it works kids... one day your digging on all the new music, and loving a certain album. You listen to it over and over. 100 + times, who knows. Then in an instant it’s 30 years later. The artist Todd,.... is coming to your town for a concert,,,,,whooo. Indeed awesome. Waukegan 2017. Them your watching youtube.... HF. you remember all the words to entire album..... TR, Is one of most under appreciated artists....NOT under rated.....UNDER APPRECIATED, In 20th century.
Only positive Reply’s accepted peace! Todd’s Technique in the studio is so obviously advanced at this point. Cool.
Such a great band...so underrated, so criminally unknown. Should have been huge. The singing and playing is never less than breathtaking.
One of my favorite Todd albums.. NY shows on the pier NJ shows small venues. God I miss how simple things were back then... We were on the road to Utopia and didn't see all the intersections that were to come.
This is one of my favorite albums ever recorded! Amazing stuff!
Todd I played backup for you over 5 years when you came to Long Island! Now I am 56.. still your music come out frist... I worked for Goldman, Sachs... was a Partner and Deloitte... THANK GOD.. I quit!~ Back to the beach!
This is such a kick -ass CD back in the day my sound man and I played this constantly. No one else had this CD and we turned many people on to this Music. Still sounds great after all these years. Love You-Tube for this kind of stuff. ROCK-ON Glenn Augustyn
I did the same thing in my high school & college days (it was vinyl and cassettes back then). I still love turning people on to Todd and Utopia all these years later...! ♥♥♥
Hey Thanks Jeanne I do too. I sometimes wish he would get this particular band together and tour I`d see him Live in a Hearbeat. Keep Rocking Glenn Augustyn
saw the show at the Philly Spectrum back in the day. 'nuff said...
YUP, I was turned on to Todd/Utopia by our sound man in '77, and I've turned many others onto Todd ever since. Loved all his shows in Chicago, solo, and w/Utopia.
Last Of The New Wave Riders is just a superb rock song...a massive stand out for me.
Alan Levy
Without a doubt ol mate
I am embarrassed to say I just discovered Todd and Utopia last night due to a recommendation by a friend. He saw them last night in concert.
Thanks Mike! You rock!
All of Todd Rundgrens albums are amazing! I've been a fan since mid 70's! Enjoy the journey! It's a great ride!
You're blowing my mind !
This was a missing piece of my memory.
Classic album. Todd and Utopia were always fabulous!
The first Utopia album I bought, and still my favorite, it's a typical day on the road to Utopia
Working at a radio station when this came out. Couldn't play it enough! Great prog rock!
30 YRS LATER ITS STILL A GREAT ALBUM
H D this album is over 40..
I don' t know how I didn't know this group back in the day, they are amazing! I only knew Feet Don't Fail Me Now from MTV. These guys are amazing!
You can hear where Adrian Belew and Hall & Oates got their sound... both directions are so different but both are present in this music. Todd rocks, plain and simple.
That is the perfect way to describe this music, and I never thought of it either way. But you are right!
I was listening to Caravan when I saw your post.
Great album i get lost! My FAV. Is CARAVAN!
I agree! Roger Powell really does a great job,it's better on this album than when live.
I grooved this album it was so great. Played it into the ground.
Don't know how many parties ended up with this album, wore the grooves off, long live todd
I remember buying this album when it was first release. One of Utopia's best!
Still way underrated, even to this day.
Todd still stands for everything he sings: a real intellectual: saw him in Amsterdam with the Philharmonic: listen and shiver..
you saw him with the metropole......
I was in Mississippi when I read the tour was in London on a Thursday & on to Amsterdam Saturday night.Broke folks missed the show.It must have been in 2009'.Still broke.......but a true star 4 Todd.
One of my favorite. From the beginning at the end, awesome, amazing !!!! I still have de LP and the cassette tape.
If you want to escape for awhile, just play this , any Todd album is a way to go back in time
Great album! Amazing first track!!! "THE ROAD TO UTOPIA"
Amazing how the demos come "fully realized" and could have been released on their own. Great stuff!
Amazing album along with Swing To the Right.Todds golden period.
I heard this playing in a "record store" when first released, with the cover displayed behind the counter, bought it and didn't take it off of my turntable for a month!!! Caravan got me! :)
Adventures in Utopia is freaky good album! I put it in the top 100 albums of all time....it is in my personal top 10. The best song I believe on this album is Caravan... but, what an album!!!!
I like The Road to Utopia, The Very Last Time, Shot in the Dark, Set Me Free, Rock Love, Love Alone and You Make Me Crazy.
Saw this tour in 1980 at the Spectrum. Unfortunately didn't see Kasim and Todd again until 2015! But this concert hooked me, been a follower ever since!
I had the same thing , saw them in 1980 then not again till 2015 at the Ponte Vedra Music Hall. The show was very small probably 500 or so,we had front row seats and got to meet Todd after the show and got him to autographe my original Runt album and an old concert booklet from the Ra! tour in 1977. Great memories Todd was very aligning that night.
+Lee Wilkerson abliging !!
Just saw and his fun crew live. I have so many of his albums and they were the main listen for so many years. Still are.
Saw these guys on this tour. Unreal production. Classic Tod.
My 2nd concert I ever attended. I was only around 12 or 13 @ the time. I remember what a great show it was!
One of my most favorite albums from my college years...
Saw Todd with my future wife to be at Cleveland Music Hall around 1975 ish.. I just turned 61 yrs..
Another of my favorite bands broke huge in Cleveland back in 75. I'm curious.....do you remember being one of the 1st RUSH fans back then? I know....Geddy Lee's vocals don't in any way compare to TR and UTOPIA, but good rock is universal, no? lol
I rem when I bought this album . Than the cassette to listen on my Sony Walkman..thinking to myself OMG I can walk around and hear TODD.
by far this is one of my favorite utopia albums. my other faves include, oops, wrong planet, & that "beatle-esque lp they also released in 1980.
out standing in their field on the back cover -Deface the music
yes sir!!! :-)
Its called FAITHFUL, one side are cover songs and the other side are all origanals.
Faithful rocks!
Lee Wilkerson The "Beatles" album was Deface the Music which was a Utopia album. "Faithful" was a Todd record Side one was covers, two was all new originals
Upper Darby Pennsylvania, was an outcast like me,did his own thing and people Loved it.
Expression in Music is not easily done today in what we use to call "Classic" and Memorable.
Music today is Shallow and over processing that isn't familiar to the Older Audiophile listeners.
Thanks I haven't heard this since in my teens and I use to listen to over and .......again.
Fantatic, I firstly heard it in my young days as well... I am now 61, and still love it
Thanks for our Todd Rundgren
(in addition : I am from Denmark, and have never been visiting the USA)
For ever love to your music, my dear professor!!! 😊
Best regards
Thomas Johansen, Copenhagen, Denmark.
I saw them live at the Civic Center in Des Moines IA in 1980, and at one point, we all rushed the stage. Afterward, we chased their limo to the Hilton Hotel where they were staying, and my friend knocked on his room door. He answered and my friend asked him 'how do you play the Wheel?' To which Todd replies, 'It's all in the first two strings!' Then my friend asks him if he wanted to 'smoke' with us, and Todd goes 'It's too late now!' He closes the door. We went back a few minutes later and I slid some psychedelic drawings I'd made before the show under his door, and we left. Great memories! We went to the POV concert on a couple of the tour dates in 85, followed them all the way to Rockford, Illinois, and bugged them there as well. Shared an elevator at the hotel with Willy and Kaz.
Man, you are so lucky and fortunate to have seen Utopia live in concert, and at hotels.... if I was a millionaire I would pay them to come back together and make more albums...
SB1: Great, fun story! Thx for sharing.
Burnt this cassette out listening to it. Was fortunate enough to see Todd in 1977 and 1980. Willie Wilcox was in some sort of spinning drum set.
I saw him around the same time! Always was a killer show! Utopia were awesome! Especially at Royal Oak!
did all this w/ the Tubes in 83 ,unreal
The Traparatus - electronic drum kit built on a motorcycle frame!
Haha. Saw this tour in OKC at the Zoo Ampitheatre. Willie was on a motorcycle drum set!! :) "Guess I'll join in the laughter. On the Road to Utopia"!
Thank you for this !
Saw this tour!!! Awesome!!!!
My first Utoipa album
Mine too! I think.... either this or Oops Wrong Planet. Either way.... ;)
Saw this band 13 times from coast to coast, USA. Never disappointed. Can't get much tighter. Very underrated awesome foursome.
Oh, I forgot, Honolulu, too.
Gorgeous!!!!!!! Todd Rundgreen is the Master of Dreams,Spaces,He has the Wonderfull Utopia like a Magic Word!!!!!! I'll Hear Again &Again &Again!!!!!!!!!

Man I missed this! Thx Mojo!!!!!
ty so much for this its the most played song on my ipod now, the entire hour of it :)
Don't Tie My Hands -- got a lot of old old boots, but never heard this remake. Also Rundgren singing Umbrella Man, refreshes the old Kasim version nicely. Thanks for the post.
Big thanks for mastering this and sharing!!
Love love love Todd Rundgren! I got to bang the drum at his concert in Madison Wisconsin back in the '80s. There's my 15 minutes, lol.
thanks, very good mix, haven't hear this in eons, was looking for "Road...." and found this
Ahhh my album cover..
Just saw on AXS-TV the Utopia tour. LOVE AFFAIR ALL OVER AGAIN!

I love this album, one of my "favorite of all time" is "Second Nature". Even I have the original album (with lyrics included) manufactured in 1980 by a company printing services recordings of Indianapolis and is in perfect condition.
A detail: In the printed lyric of "Second Nature" is not a part of the lyric and starts saying "Nobody knows ..."
Screwed up my exams left school album I bought to sooth nerves. I knew nobody else had it. Was my sanctuary.
Thank you so much for this!!!! TR is THE BEST and a true musical genius!
79 zoo amphitheatre norman okla dusk...guitar rings out .last of the new wave riders and so it was....a moment in time froze
Todd I love yya greatest. Music to grow up withlove laurie santini
Won't stop..
Till I find what I am looking for, thanks Todd, your a good pard
3rd song....2nd Nature to Me Now....doesn't get any better than that for sap or rap....both great song genres....it just doesn't get any better for someone who has been in love or is in love Thank you all involved!!!!!
Good job man...appreciate it!
- Excellent! I had this on vinyl back in the day...
thnx for the hard work mojo. i had this as a bootleg on cass. when i was stationed in south korea way back in 82! it's funny how you get used to hearing the songs in a certain order. this lp. is perfect when it comes to that!!!
I forgot about this music for quite a while. Thank God that I finally thought about it again and RUclips!
listened to this to death when it came out on my walkman ;)
+Marcy Rauch i think i wore the record out by playing it too much. i know i definitely wore through that cassette tape! xxx
I still play this album/cd like it just came out..enjoy all Todd and Utopia music ..
I love utopia since I guess the 80s when I first hear them
Just sold most of my vinyl collection, but this is one of the 60 I kept. Extraordinary.
Wonderful. :)
When I first heard this album weeks after it's release, I was underwhelmed. Mind you, I was a huge fan of TR and Utopia for years by then. My fellow TR friends and I turned many people onto Todd through the years. My own sister and step-brother for two.
My initial reaction to this album likely had a lot to do with the fact that I was a fan of his more expansive, experimental, proggy efforts with Utopia. RA was an amazing effort showcasing the stripped down four piece band and their new bassist singer, Kasim. I was sort of taken aback with Oops because of it's simplicity, but there were so many excellent songs on it, plus I "got" their punk approach with the ratty tee shirt look. Kind of a poke at punk music, but kicked up several notches in terms of the music and musicianship, much like The Police, Cheap Trick and Blondie. Not that I was listening to those bands. I was quite into acoustic jazz and fusion then, which likely added to my reaction to this very poppy music.
My step-bro had this album, and whenever I found some time with his stereo system, I would listen to this album, finding more and more things to like. Just enjoying it for what it was. Funny thing is that my reaction to the double album Utopia release in 1982 was the complete opposite to Adventures here. I loved it from the first note. Oblivion was the same. Loved it from the first note.
Oblivion album back story: I met TR at his video studio around that time. The night before we met (Halloween day!), I sat outside his studio on Mink Hollow listening to him work on the songs for Oblivion.
Bought the album in the way back, love it all.
seen todd so many times I will remember till the day they lay me down
Fantastic
Great job on this Mr Risen.
Easily THE best Utopia album where nearly every single track is pretty damn good or at least interesting coming across as almost like a Queen album
merry christmas thanks 4 great music1 Keep uo good work1
Second Nature is an awesome song.
Sent me down the road, down the tracks.....
Saw Utopia at the Center Stage in Canton, Michigan during their tour for this album. They were really on top of their game at this period. Always a great show, but wow... This is one of my favorite Todd/Utopia albums.
I saw this tour at the Agora Ballroom Atlanta Ga. across from the Fox Theater . I wish they would have been there.
Makes me HAPPY
LOVE THIS ALBUM!!! I've gotten to see Todd with his band, and also with Utopia a few times - What a talented guy and such great musicians on all his stuff. The songs are so "telling for the time" .. You might like JELLY FISH or GODLEY & CREME too .. *(thanks for uploading!)*
Todd Rundgren's Utopia made intelligent, serious, yet humorous music. Despite hard core fans, they didn't have commercial success...thank goodness.
CANT get enough of "Caravan" .. SO MUCH like the "RA" album ..
Unbelievable! Great Album!!
