    I don't think it's fair for them to compare the civic SI to the BRZ/FRS and the Miata. Both of those cars cost more than the SI and have much less practicality, the BRZ is a much harsher ride with very little cargo room, and the Miata is a two seater car. The SI is a fun, practical car that makes it compromises by not being too soft nor too hardcore.

    Consider adding a bigger rear sway bar (SI stock is 15mm) like the Eibach 19mm or the Progress 22mm. You'll love it. The best $160 - $180 you can spend. Will also reduce understeer, dramatically. .

    Pretty sure the Si costs significantly less than a WRX or a BRZ.

    • @JrZodiac
      @JrZodiac 9 лет назад +1

      Si and brz r about the same!! Si have wayyyy better interior and more spacious while brz is a RWD.

    • @danielbond2702
      @danielbond2702 9 лет назад +8

      Xiaoyang Li brz is 2 grand more. But yeah the Si has more features. But if you compare it to the limited manual its 4 grand more. And the series blue is 7 grand more. And I'm not even sure what you get for the extra money. All I know is the Si has a nice interior, but for being a sport edition car it should've had the option for a deeper bucket seat. Also if it came lower from factory it would be nice

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo 8 лет назад +2

      +Daniel Bond Agreed, the older 8th gen type r seats are much nicer. I'm pretty sure the Si just has standard seats with different colours and stitching (now with the red inserts).

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo 8 лет назад +3

      I notice Honda have restored the bucket seats in the 10th generation. :) (Seem to be Type R seats with different fabric.) Pity about the 1.5L only...

    Thanks a lot for watching and being a fan of the show. We will continue to put out pieces every month - and faster when possible. Our show has a smaller crew and budget than pretty much everyone else doing this kind of thing, so it takes us a while but we aren't going to sacrifice the quality for speed. Tell a friend or two as every new viewer helps! We've got some really cool shoots coming up the second half of this year - we're excited to share!

  • @EverydayDriver

  • @CoreyJones314
    @CoreyJones314 9 лет назад +4

    Can you review a sedan? I've driven both (and I own an eighth gen sedan), and the sedans feel more communicative to me. They have more polar movement in turns. I haven't seen any big-league, legitimate reviews of the Si sedan - all of the major reviews have been with the Si coupe, and the coupe body doesn't seem as playful to me even if it is point-whatever seconds faster to 60 and has two doors.
    Honda has always been good at providing seemingly-random, unusual design changes that end up making sense, especially when you actually use them (see: '02-'06 CR-V parking brake). Maybe the sedan body for the Civic Si is one of those design changes. Recall the FD2 (The last JDM Civic Type-R) is a sedan body style. Honda must have chosen the sedan for their most recent performance-oriented creation over the coupe for a reason (I'll nominate frame rigidity).

  • @jmillermcp
    @jmillermcp 11 лет назад +3

    It's important to note that Honda made notable improvements in the 2013 model of the 9th gen Si. Steering, handling, interior, etc. Any chance of getting an updated review with the 2013 model?

  • @rheniformer
    @rheniformer 12 лет назад +3

    The clutch and transmission are superb. I used to be anti Honda. I stopped at the Honda dealer on my way out of town to purchase a New Scion XB with manual transmission. I expected to try a Civic to prove I was making the right decision to go Scion. I got hooked by the new Civic, then I tried the Si and knew in the 1st two gears it was mine. I'm old school and hate that the manual shift option is gone on so many vehicles. That Si only comes in Manual shift makes it a real honest car for me.

  • @EverydayDriver
    @EverydayDriver  11 лет назад +1

    The MazdaSpeed 3 is more of an enthusiast car than the SI. The MS3 is more focused and hardcore, so if that works for you then you'll be pleased. The SI has a better gearbox and is likely a more reliable used buy than the MS3. In power, handling, and driver involvement, the MS3 wins. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

  • @TassieLorenzo
    @TassieLorenzo 8 лет назад +2

    "I got to ride in the SI last year maybe it was the one I was in but when it shifted u actually felt the rough jolt when gears changed the ride is good. " It has a factory lightweight flywheel since Hondas are designed properly and thoughtfully. [AFAIK, GTI manuals have a dual mass flywheel which is just ridiculous for a sportyish car.] Just need more practise driving the Si. :)

    Very good review. I personally loved my 07 civic si coupe way more than the current generation. The styling and motor was far more interesting IMO. I now drive the 2010 mazdaspeed 3 and it is a riot in every way! But I have been urning for RWD so I now have the Scion/Subaru FR-S/BRZ in my sights. :)

    That's the beauty of the SI though, If I don't want to drive like it's a race car I don't have to; when i want to to rev high I can make it do so too, it's not necessarily a bad thing for that type of driving.

    This is a really good car. I feel like this review does not do the civic justice. I've been shopping around and the Civic is the best thing you can get for your money. Fun to drive, lots of tech, above average interior, and good looking exterior. Not to mention civics hold their value (if you want to resell it later) and last forever. What car was Everyday Driver looking at ??? Total loss of credibility :( !!!

      I agree, I bought the last 2013 brand new Si HFP Coupe, and I'm just loving the car, the 2013 interior is heads and shoulders above the competition and it makes a great noise, yes it doesn't corner as fast, yes it doesn't make as much power, but overall as a daily driver, which this channel refers to "Everyday Driver". The Civic is tough to beat.

    Bought a Civic Si 4dr. Hard choice, some things I preferred about Civic LX but think in the long run I’ll be happy with the Si as long as it is durable. Almost went Lancer Ralliart Premium (have an '11 Outlander, dealer is A+) but I started out for basic transportation, at that the Si was a huge step to a zippy cool car. If I really want to dial up the pulse I’ve an ‘03 ZX9R Ninja in the garage. Love your test format, very original, keep up the good work, very cool that you responded to my post.

    Tested lots of cars today inc the Si. Price $27,485 inc freight & PDI (Canada). WRX is $34,190, MX is $35,790 (MX is -34 hp, -30 lb/ft). BRZ is $32,758. I wouldn't call these "same price bracket" if you’re going that far lets inc Mustang 5.0 at $37,545 drove one today but I shouldn't have. Hard to come down from 420 hp & 390 ft-lb. Hard comparing, nothing's really close to the Si, that’s a good thing, choices should have clear definition, Si is best bang for buck if your bucks stop at $27,485.

    Body roll exists on street cars for a reason. Complicated to explain. But my Miata with the stock long travel suspension (body roll included) handled better in the real world of bad roads than it does now with custom stiff and low sport suspension. Stiffer sway bars eliminate body roll easier than stiffer springs, but if done wrong can give you massive oversteer or understeer.

  • @adamlreiner

    "There is just one problem with this engine. It's LOUD."
    I prefer the loudness of a four-cylinder to a quiet V6. Honda four bangers are exceptionally loud. To tuner enthusiasts, this is an advantage, not a problem. I love the sound my I4 Accord makes at high revs.

  • @rheniformer
    @rheniformer 12 лет назад

    I tried most of these cars and a few more. Then I bought a 2012 Si sedan. When it is cold the engine does sound like florescent tubes going through a chipper, but when it is warm it takes on a nice sporty report especially when the v-tech kicks in. I have been enjoying the car every day for the last 3 months, it is a very interesting daily driver that should be competent when the snow flies as well.

  • @SINE382

    The civic is just tires, springs and sway bar away from being track happy. Honda needs to come out with a civic sir not a type r but an sir that still keeps it's low maintenance naturally aspirated motor, with a full suspension upgrade it would be killer on track or back roads because in stock form it already pushes a good lap time compared to the competition. Hopefully honda maybe adapts tees much more aggressive suspension changes

    Todd your review is spot-on. I currently have a 2009 Civic Si Coupe and I'm ready for a new car, as I look around at the 25-35k price range their is just better choices in-term of power, handling, tech., and so on. Honda needs to wake up. I see people argue about reliability. If reliability is your main concern save your money and buy a regular Civic. I choose a fun car that makes me smile for all of the 100k Miles, rather then a boring car that will last 200k.

    I had an 06 Si in Fuji Blue Pearl and I agree that the previous generation of the car had a more menacing look, a nicer interior, more of a kick (K20) and smoother lines. It was referred to as one of the best handling front wheel drive cars ever (Tommy K.) and a front wheel drive M3. I miss it from time to time. Funny thing is, I made it over steer around a wide corner and met a ditch....and a pole. I picked up the Accord coupe V6 6MT and it was faster but never felt as pure.

    And you could always go used - You could get a very nice S2000 and have money left over... decisions, decisions.

    All I can say is thank god for the 2013 "emergency" redesign! Either way I'd still buy the sedan, or a used 2011 and keep the revvy K20. The current coupe is fugly, which is kinda sad, but considering the last JDM Civic Type-R was sedan only, it kinda makes sense. Yes there's many great alternatives for the price point, but Honda still offers a great overall package and gets many things right that other brands don't.

    You guys should test the EM1 99-00 Si, it is better than the newer Si's and it is barely slower than the new Si, and it is lighter, smaller and handles better than the new one, it also revs at a higher redline (8K RPM) than the new one (7K RPM). The older car was fast back at the time when it came out and it was the only true Si, that and the Integra Type R, Prelude, and RSX Type S were better FWD cars at the time and they still rot on the new Si. I agree you can find better sports car for the same money as an Si and also, you can buy a used S2000 for a cheaper price.

    Yep. 99-00 were the last years they used doublewisbone at all 4 corners...+ the car was about 500lbs lighter.. The motors on the new ones seem to have a big torque increase, but, the extra weight and cheaper suspension negated any of the benefits on the track..

    The only things I like about the Civic Si is the transmission/gearbox and the sound of the engine. Other than that, it just feels like an ordinary economy car. The Civic Type-R however, that's a different story(they need to bring it to the US!!!).

    I've been researching into the pedigree and racing history of Honda and it seems to me, as a beginner Honda enthusiast, that the S2000 is quite a easy choice for the performance and tune oriented crowd. (Can find a great used S2K with less than 70K miles on it for around $12,000 nowadays)

    It's not just Honda's though. I used to own a 2000 Si and loved it. Honda's still have great feel and reliability... but alas the competition has caught up.

    I agree about the engine. I have a 2007 Si and I've pushed it close to redline many times. It is a little noisy but who gives a crap? It sounds like you're driving Formula 1. I was giving my son and his friends a ride, and passed in 2nd gear at 7500 rpm, and they thought it was awesome. I used to have summer tires on it, and the handling was sick. The gearbox is one of the best. It also looks better than the 2012. They sissified the 2012 styling, as if they were selling it to 40 somethings.

    I think you really nailed the car. Not a bad car. But a step down from previous Si coupes and the car is not keeping up with the competition. Honda should delay the next civic by 3 months and really improve on quality and car excitement.

    Sports cars are dedicated to younger drivers, correct? And how many young drivers do you know can afford a fully loaded BRZ? The Civic Si comes fully loaded at around $25k. The BRZ starts at $25k. I'm a full time college student working full time and I bust my ass off to pay for my civic. The last thing I care about is how cool I look driving a 'sports car'. The car looks nice and gets me to where I need to be and that's what I care about.

    The Honda Civic CERTAINLY compares with the BRZ/FR-S considering that this is the SI version, therefore it is definitely aimed more towards the everyday enthusiast, just like the BRZ/FR-S is. If you're going to get a Honda Civic SI instead of a regular Honda Civic, then things like a overly loud engine is definitely something you are going to want to consider - you might be willing to pay a bit more for something a bit nicer like a FR-S. So great video, again, EveryDayDriver!

    What about the Mazdaspeed3? It's faster in 0-60, quarter mile, and on the track, it handles better, while being more practical since it's a hatch. Oh, and it's turbocharged, which may cause some lag, but is ultimately cooler in most enthusiasts opinions, including mine. So it's got a smiley face on it's front end, but i'd rather have that than a Honda badge. Worth the extra $1900 in my opinion.

    agreed. SI is not really that exciting to drive compared to other sports cars. it just doesn't have that "feel" of a sports car. but it's an economy car that you can depend on for a very long time. people buy honda for reliability, fair price, and resale value. i think if it's going to be your only vehicle and you don't want to spend a lot of money on a car, this is a perfect vehicle. perfect for young adults. German cars are usually for middle aged people who can afford to waste money.

    In the outside shots, the car sounds like my Honda lawnmower.
    This isn't the 90s anymore where a lightly tuned Si was able to hang with the Fox bodies Mustangs from the dig. If want to get an Si coupe, you might as well get a V6 Mustang. It's practically same price and fuel consumption but you get 100 more horsepower to the proper wheels. Winter? Nothing proper winter tires can't fix. The car isn't small either, I figure space wise, it might be even more practical than the Si coupe.

    I Totally missed that, FRS is $5,173 less than BRZ (for same car?). Heavy snow here in winter and I commute 30 miles at odd times as I am a shift worker. Didn't drive FRS because I didn't want to get attached, Had to drive Mustang because I have been a fan since we had a 1990 5.0, wife wanted to go Mustang as bad as I wanted even though she'd never drive it (manual tranny). I'm 54 (old school) so love RWD but couldn't bring myself to drive a Mustang, FRS or S2000 in snow.
