    @Lovely Etc. I just came across this video and found it so helpful. There was a time that people’s options were replace or refinish cabinets. I’ve never done either one but I’m sure they were BOTH expensive. Refinished cabinets less expensive than replacing entire kitchen cabinets but I’m sure still expensive. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this option so much more!!!! Thank you.

    • @LovelyEtc

      Thank you! I agree - there's no reason to replace or even do an expensive refinish when the cabinets are still perfectly good. Paint can do wonders!

    We bought our house in 2009 (built in 2005) so it had the builder grade honey oak cabinets. They've been driving me crazy the last few years-it seems they've gotten uglier! I wanted to replace, but it's way too expensive, so painting was the alternative and that scared the crap out of me. Especially since I decided to paint them tricorn black . I've watched about a dozen videos and didn't feel very confident....and then I found yours! Oh my gosh! I admit I re-watched to absorb as much as I could. I love how you calmly explain everything. I spackled and sanded, did two coats of paint and two light coats of sealant and they look Ah-maz-ing! The grain does not show through and visitors think we replaced the cabinets! Thank you soooo much!

    Love this video. How long in between coats? How long did it take to full dry (prior to top coat)

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  3 года назад +2

      I wait at least an hour between coats. If it feels completely dry to the touch, you should be safe to do the next coat. (If it feels cool to the touch, it isn't completely dry yet). The same is true before the top coat - just make sure it is fully dry. On their website, they say it can take up to four hours depending on temperature and humidity.

    This was most helpful video so far TY. I literally can't decide what kind of of paint is best. (For bathroom also) I want to do mine white, not bright- maybe GF antique white (mine are very dark wood now). GF says on their website not to use topcoat for whites, due to yellowing. can u recommend a top coat that is good for whites? Or just none at all? 😀

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  2 года назад +1

      You can go without a topcoat with GF milk paint, but for something that gets a lot of use like a bathroom cabinet, I think a topcoat really helps. I know GF doesn't recommend their High Performance Topcoat over white paint, but I have actually used it on bright white furniture multiple times without yellowing and that is what I still recommend. I think the key to prevent yellowing is to prep your cabinets/furniture wll (always use a shellac or oil-based primer on dark woods to prevent tannins from yellowing your paint) and also make sure to apply the sealer using thin coats.

    • @LovelyEtc

      Ugh, it stinks the cabinets were already painted and aren't holding up well! I would use a palm sander to sand off any loose paint. (If you don't have a sander, you can do it by hand with sandpaper, but it will take a lot longer). You may have to remove all of the paint, but you might not - just make sure anything loose or easy to scrape off is gone. Then use a good primer and repaint. Good luck!

    Looking for advice! I watched your video and decided I was going to revamp my bathroom. I still need to do a top coat, but im worried I have do something very wrong as the paint scratches easy right now with a slight bump. Am I going to need to start from scratch?

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  2 года назад

      Paint usually takes several weeks to fully cure or harden. So if it scratches off a bit when you scratch it with a fingernail, it will probably be okay. It will harden with time. But if the paint is scratching off anytime it is touched, that is a problem. If it isn't adhering, it may be because the cabinet wasn't cleaned well before painting. Or because it had a very slick surface and really needed primer before paint. I would test a few spots and if it is only scratching off with something sharp or with force, you are probably okay to carry on and do the topcoat. But if it is scratching off all over, it would be best to start over. You don't have to remove all the paint, just gently sand any loose paint off. Then I would clean it well, use primer, and paint again. Fingers crossed you don't have to do that!

      Good luck with your bathroom! Once your paint the vanity, the tile top might not look bad at all. But if you don't like it, I know that some people use a concrete overlay or resin to turn tile countertops into a smooth countertop.

      Brush marks? If you use a high quality paintbrush, there shouldn't be many brush marks. If you are still seeing a lot of brush marks, you can add a bit of water or floetrol to your paint to thin it a bit to help it go on more smoothly. I also have a post on my website about how to get a really smooth finish when painting cabinets - www.lovelyetc.com/how-to-get-a-super-smooth-finish-when-painting-cabinets/

    so u dont paint the inside or the inside of the drawers?

      @jenniferb5540 3 года назад +2

      No the paint would not hold up in those areas. If you want to change the look, try contact paper in those areas.

      Some people do, but like Jennifer said, I don't. You don't really see those areas and paint doesn't hold up as well. But if you already painted there, it's fine. Just be really gentle and try not to put anything inside for a week or two so the paint has time to fully harden.

      Mine is from a yard sale, but you can probably find one on Facebook Marketplace if you keep looking. It's from an antique vanity.

      Well if you already have all the answers, you didn't need to watch anyway. 😀
