Worthwhile comments on A Love Supreme. The recording session for A Love Supreme was improvised with only a one page listing on a sheet of paper indicating how each of the four songs was to be played. Amazing Trace. Truly amazing.

Contrary to some opinions, things like this don't have to be understood to be fully appreciated. I was 17 years old when I first heard this record on a late-night CBC jazz radio program (thank you Katie Malik). To this day, A love Supreme gives me chills. Do I understand it? Probably not to the degree of the "experts" on the thread. Do I get it? Much like I get the pleasure/joy that the sunshine, ocean, wildlife brings, yup. Peace

At some point, A Love Supreme is going to be analyzed from other than a Christian perspective. The fact is in his poem, liner notes or however you refer to them, Trane made no mention of Christ, only God, only God. Trying to understand this masterpiece without recognizing this fact is critical. There was no mention of one in three or anything that speaks of a trinity. The oneness of God, the creator and sustainer of creation, is his (Coltrane’s) focus and the inspiration for his improvisation and the message he was trying to creatively and artistically convey. Trying to place this in the context of a country preacher, a sermon, a call and response like a church renders it to be more emotional than spiritual. I humbly suggest that anyone interested to explore the oneness and preeminence of God as expressed in Islam. That concept is called ‘tawheed’ in Arabic and was not only the concept expressed here but was the name of a famous album by Phatoah Sanders ‘Tawhid’ one of the two Coltrane sidemen along with McCoy Tyner who were indeed Muslim.

Coltrane presented a small part of his philosophy in an interview in Japan. He said that he was raised with Christian traits but then he said; I quote: “I believe all men know the truth.” And that to ME is a very eastern way of putting it. To me that line quote sounds like Taoism or maybe some sort of Buddhism. And those religions can be interpreted very widely sooo. His philosophy was that all men know the truth, which to me is far away from religion, more closer to present.
