      I just found out about the "guitarists" album he did. I went straight to the Derek Trucks parts and wow! Wow! Tyner and Trucks! I love that musicians across generations, races, and even distance are coming together like never before.

    Despite the beauty of a 'new' 1963 Coltrane recording - that goes without saying - the best thing about this track just might be the chance to hear Jimmy Garrison play an arco solo, followed by a chorus of him walking with Elvin Jones before Trane restates the Theme.

    • @samferguson9171
      @samferguson9171 6 лет назад +10

      ghairraigh Totally. The arco solo is very cool. It’s the most Paul Chambers-sounding thing I’ve ever heard from Garrison. And then when Elvin comes back in and they swing out! Talk about groove.

    • @ghairraigh
      @ghairraigh 6 лет назад +6

      I have always loved the sound of Arco - especially Paul Chambers with the Red Garland Trio. I admire all the great arco players like Mingus, Ron Carter (but you have to hunt for examples), and Jiri "George" Mraz. Christian McBride stands out among the 'younger' guys. Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen is a particular favorite of mine at this seemingly lost art.

      Guy Montag I agree, back then 50s 60s etc were the good old days, but racism and sexism and tensions were much more ignored, tolerated, and neglected. Then there was things like war, cuban missile crisis, nixon scandal, people didn't handle it as well back then and panicked.

    Structurally, melodically, and to a limited extent, harmonically, this tune sounds analogous to the tune 'Joelle' penned by Wayne Shorter. Though recorded a couple of years apart, the connection is eerily ethereal. One wonders.... 😢

    Wow what a great tune. My mother is a fan of jazz and turned me onto smooth jazz, free jazz, traditional jazz. I had heard her playing jazz in her van when i was younger and always opted to listen to classic rock instead which is another genre of music she loves. In 2013 i decided to listen to some John Coltrane and Miles Davis alone in my room without distractions and loved it upon first listen by myself. I started buying every MIles Davis and John Coltrane CD and record that i enjoyed listening too and now have quite the collection. I like some of the tunes on this album and will be picking up this album on CD and vinyl record for sure.

    Philip Ocasio A Happy Birthday to one of the great innovators of Jazz, who would grasped both the inner and outer spiritual realm of creativity on the saxophone. An amazing musician, see his documentary on NetFlix or RUclips. Who wasn't influenced by the genius of John Coltrane? I thought Coltrane was a complete nut, basket case when I first heard Giant Steps, and yet, even though he had passed when I began my journey playing the tenor sax in 1968. At 66 yrs young, I still enjoy playing at home along with so many of his music CD's, which include Giant Steps, A Love Supreme, Crescent, Transition, Meditation, Coltrane and Hartman, and many others...RIP... John and thank you for taking me along that vastness of your musical universe. Now I hear and experience these recordings and again find myself in awe of the ingredients in this lost recorded music, along with the visualization of what positively went on in your mind as you created the sound through your sax, is nothing short of amazing. 🎶🎷🎼
