Here in NYC there was a similar accident on the East River in about 1905 called the General Slocum Disaster. Instead of a collision the boat caught fire during a Sunday pleasure outing and something like a thousand people died. There is a marble memorial fountain in Tompkins Square Park .
Then there is the SS Eastland that capsized in the Chicago River early 1900s, killing 800 or so. Sadly, it was taking families to a company picnic somewhere, mostly lower class employees who couldn’t afford vacations.
@@geslinam9703 - The Eastland was one of three steamers employed to carry employees of the Western Electric Company from Chicago to Michigan City, Indiana for a company picnic. The disaster occurred on July 25, 1915, on the Chicago River between Clark and Lasalle Streets.

Congratulations on 91,000 subscribers!!! That George II coin is a stunning find with do much detail -a nice find indeed!!! Such a sad story of the Princess Alice, I remember my late Dad telling me of the night of the disaster. I'd certainly contribute to such a fund for the memorial to be restored and for a restoration of the plaque, now faded that marks the disaster on the thames, if a fundraising scheme could be set up.

Very sad story .i remember hearing about this at school and the badly polluted river .so similar to the marchioness disaster in august 1989 .51 died mostly under 30 sad waste of lives
I met someone who survived the Marchioness Disaster. Was below & managed to take deep breath & hold it untill they could slip out through a split in the side of the ship. They put their survival down to having practised Ki Breathing as a practitioner of Ki Aikido.
Lovely that you left some flowers Nicola. And it's very special to be able to learn of these events and remember those who died. It's a terrible thing that happened but good to know that there are people who make sure that the victims aren't forgotten.
I can remember the princess Alice story from my childhood. My history teacher at primary school liked to do an off piste history lesson now and again. When I saw the images of the ship being hit by the coal ship it came flooding back. A very sad happening. Amazing when these sorts of things fade from memory and even history. Almost worst than the Titanic.
the sewage being inhaled probably wasn't nearly as bad a problem as the foul water being ingested while the people fought to stay afloat in the water, probably a good many who survived initially contracted illnesses like typhus or dysentery and succumbed.
Just found your channel in the last hour, this is so cool! I love it! I'm planning on moving to nova scotia and it would b a dream to do this there! Edit: thanks for the swan stand off! I live in Stratford Ontario (Canada) and we have some swans from the Queen, that we put in the Avon river every summer but their wings are clipped so I've never seen them fly!
Thanks Nell! I love watching the swans here. They are real characters! They all have their own little section of the Thames. Good luck with your move x
Thank you so much for the wonderful “show” this week, Nicola. We are all amazed that you can spot such tiny objects in the muck. Scratching around really pays off for you sometimes. Keep doing it. That earring would have looked spectacular in its heyday. I wondered what those swans were doing at first, all fluffed up with heads invisible. They are very territorial. It must be mating season. Is that lovely instrumental music played by Your son? It really does make your site the best out of the lot, along with the wildlife clips and the very intriguing narration you offer. I, for one, am amazed how quickly those pipes fade back to beige, and how those long thin ones aren’t smashed to bits over the centuries. Nature truly is marvellous! Thanks again for a great video. Thankyou for sharing your mudlarking & the tragic story of the Princess Alice
Boker is a good knife manufacturer in Germany. They have good blades and hold up well.
Thank you for telling us about the Princess Alice tragedy and following it up with a visit to the cemetery.
I can remember the princess Alice story from my childhood. My history teacher at primary school liked to do an off piste history lesson now and again. When I saw the images of the ship being hit by the coal ship it came flooding back. A very sad happening.
Amazing when these sorts of things fade from memory and even history.
Almost worst than the Titanic.
yes, very sad and so unexpected. and actually not all that long ago really
I love how the swans start running when they land :) Keep up the great work Nicola
Congrats on 91000👍 amazing how George II looked better after 250+ years in Thames mud than it would have after just a few years of circulation 🍺
yes, very unexpected!!
We love you videos you have such a wonderful personality and you are very knowledgeable. Hello from Michigan USA 🇺🇸
the sewage being inhaled probably wasn't nearly as bad a problem as the foul water being ingested while the people fought to stay afloat in the water, probably a good many who survived initially contracted illnesses like typhus or dysentery and succumbed.
Never tire of watching the birds and listen to the wind such a delight
Come on we need to get it to 100k! Let everyone know peeps!👍🏻
Thanks Steven!
Great story telling, thank you.
I loved the George coin, and also the BATTLE SWANS
Thank you
Beautiful tribute, Nicola, thank you for remembering the past.
@@nicolawhitemudlark thanks so much!
YP
Love your video!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank you Sheila! x
I’d like to say how much I enjoy these I was over there in the mid-80’s on tour with Joe Cocker we had no time to learn much of your history!
