  • Join me as I go mudlarking along the River Thames to see what the tide has left out. Today's video is made up of several different outings and a few different places, and I enjoy wandering along the foreshore making the most of the last of the light evenings as summer draws to a close. Then come back to the studio for a quick round up before I visit the place where the Princess Alice collision took place exactly 142 years ago - on 3rd September 1878. This is such a sad story about hundreds of people, many of them women and children, who were returning from a day out at the seaside and who drowned when the Princess Alice was struck by a collier called the Bywell Castle. I visit the place it happened and then pay a visit to the Old Woolwich Cemetery where there is a monument in memory of the those who drowned.
I am very grateful to Rob Mitchell and Dave Rickard of String Whistle, who allowed me to use their folk song, the Loss of the Princess Alice, on this video. Also Hayley Lazell for sending me her uni project about the Princss Alice.
You do need a permit to mudlark along the River Thames. You can find all the relevant information at www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Tha...

It’s you who attracted the subscribers. It’s interesting to see what you find but there are many choices of mudlarks who we can watch finding similar things. The way you present everything and the stories you tell about them along with your personality and wit that keeps us coming back and telling our friends to check you out. Doesn’t hurt that your smile is like sunshine to our souls.

Here in NYC there was a similar accident on the East River in about 1905 called the General Slocum Disaster. Instead of a collision the boat caught fire during a Sunday pleasure outing and something like a thousand people died. There is a marble memorial fountain in Tompkins Square Park .

I love that you don't take everything you find. You're leaving treasures for future mudlarkers to discover! The sound of the river is so relaxing, reminds me of the ocean! Thank you for the history of the Princess Alice disaster.

I walk on past Tripcock Point on a pretty regular basis, although I confess I neither knew the name, nor of the disaster. That's what I love about the Thames, you're always so close to history.

Nicola, thank you for sharing this tragic tail of the many lives lost in the crash and sinking of the Princess Alice. I think its a good thing that you pointed out there were those who survived the crash and sinking itself only to die from being poisoned by the nasty waters of the Thames. It seems to have provided a push to clean up the river.

I was born and raised in the UK but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the Princess Alice disaster. Thank you for sharing the story.

My partners relations was some of the family that died in that tragic accident. The worst part about it was that they had a little girl aged 6. and all they ever found of that little girl was one of the little blue shoes was found washed up on the shore. Nice to see they are remembered to this day. Thank you Nicola.

Nicola perhaps your viewers could contribute to revamping the sun bleached sign at the Princess Alice site. I would love to help and I’m sure others would as well. ❤️
