How The Navy Poisoned Hawaii Families With Jet Fuel

  • The U.S. Navy has poisoned the drinking water in Hawai‘i with its jet fuel. After 19,000 gallons of fuel stored underground leaked into O‘ahu’s main aquifer, thousands of residents were displaced from their homes and reported health symptoms.
The Navy is promising to shut down the underground facility, but many are concerned about long-term health consequences, and how long this has really been going on.
Dena Takruri went to O‘ahu to investigate.

Even though they deemed us all safe now, that shot of the water spigot with the oils splash on our neighbors wall is still there, but it’s safe to drink right?! What our country did to the kingdom of Hawaii, is sickening. What we did to all native people that lived here before us, is sick. But the US navy/military have really really screwed the people of Hawaii. Taking their sacred lands they worshiped for hundreds of years and testing bombs. Destroying the natural ecosystems on the island. There were over 1000 natural fish ponds that provided people with a majority of their food, have all been destroyed by the military. There is now only three remaining fish ponds. Now they are poisoning the water. It’s just so sick all around.

What I fail to understand is, the solution would be very simple, and not cost that much. Why would anyone ever think storing any kind of fuel near a water source would be a good idea? Why would you not build proper storage facilities for the naval aviation jet fuel to be stored in? This makes absolutely no sense, until you consider that it was laziness that allowed this to happen, and the excuse of, "It would cost too much otherwise" is merely an unscientific opinion of someone who does not want to be held responsible. Jet fuel is not gasoline -- and even then, to my knowledge, gas stations can't be built where there is the possibility gasoline, kerosene, or diesel fuel could leech out of underground storage containers/tanks. Even gas stations have to go through a refit of tank replacement every so often to deal with the possibility of leaking fuel.
So the question becomes, why hasn't the Navy or Air Force done anything about this situation? Obviously, they have the money to. It just seems like incompetence at some point, coupled with apathy and ignorance.

There will undoubtedly be more to the story since most of us are skeptical about the integrity of the Dept of Defense and the Navy's ability to safely defuel and remediate the contamination. Keep in mind that the 19,000 gallons or so admitted leakage may only be part of the story, and that that amount of fuel is still in the main aquifer, and it is not known where the oil is, how it could migrate, and how to remove it. The people of Hawaii appreciate your continuing attention to this disaster.

Just simple common sense, which apparently you lack because you even have to ask a really clueless question like that. Most likely, your not from anywhere around here. And please if you are here, LEAVE because you know NOTHING about how precious our water resources are. Unlike you mainland people, our water is totally dependant on the rain flowing to our aquafers underground. We have no reserviors, lakes or melting snow to keep our water flowing. So it does not take much to ruin our water like the thoughtless ENGINEERS in the Navy did. All branches of the military are notorious for making/saving money by allowing experimental chemicals on their bases and military housing, as well as offering minimal support or denying culpability entirely for any lasting health effects. The only reason I know this is I had family who lived on a military base several years back. The problem we have now is that the military uses big war complex lobbying to get their funding, but makes no room for improving infrastructure. Alongside this, you have the currently presidential administration making a lot of noise about improving our infrastructure, but doing little to nothing about the biggest and most important projects: our water pipes, water sources, and energy and waste management.

The military has always overstepped their bounds in every realm behind a cloak of freedom. All MILITARIES have done this.
