On your jump gate for the dog find a piece of something shiny shiny plastic or maybe a silver blanket of some sort and hang them up on the inside. Remember goats don’t like water if they think it’s water maybe they won’t go through the gate. Worth a try don’t you think!!
As a kid I can remember when it would get 20 and 30 below freezing we'd put smudge pots in The Orchards kerosene heaters out for the animals and at times we'd be out of water and melt snow for everyone and everything. Stay warm and dont stay out long. Take care

No freezing temps in southeast NC but we have had enough rain for a month. The nearby river has crested and once again the small neighboring town 4 miles from us is flooded. The 3rd time in 3-1/2 yrs but it’s usually after a hurricane. We should all just count our blessings.

I've seen LGD's lay out in -23 degree weather. Not shivering, not shaking. They curl up in a ball and let the snow cover them up to stay warm. It's amazing to see. And if you try to confine them your home. It will be remodeled or torn apart. How ever you would like to describe it. As a former bleeding heart tree huger. Been there, done that.

I hope your pipes aren’t destroyed. I saw a house on CNN where water had come downstairs to a kitchen ceiling fan and was frozen. They might also have electrical problems. If y’all don’t use winter/summer tires and in some cases snow chains and your automobile doesn’t have all wheel drive, i’d stay off of the road. In fact stay off the road to be safe from the bad drivers. I think we have your winter ❄️ weather as we got some rain yesterday and I turned off the upstairs heat here cause it’s warm. We are in NW Arkansas and suffering -10 and 9inches of snow. My Pyrenees just looks at me when I try to get him in the house. He has snow balls on his feet and ice on his back. When HE'S ready he'll come in and sleep a while. He woofs at the back door and smiles all of the way to his treat bucket, takes a good snoring nap and goes back out to check his charges. He spends nights outside, maybe on the porch but he insists he's outside. Well lines are frozen in the ground and we're carrying water to sheep and cattle. We stored it in buckets with lids in the house, it's stacked everywhere. At this point we have been keeping them refilled in case the house freezes or we lose power. There is no such thing as being too prepared in this weather. We drug out a backup propane wall heater because the central heating system is not keeping up.
Yes, he grew up as a pet in our lap in the recliner at 100#. Now he takes his job pretty seriously and you can tell we are part of his charges. Typical Pyrenees, he thinks he knows best, but will listen if you insist. My husband just came in and said Wuzzy had rolled over on his back and wiggled like he was scratching his back in the snow. It's his time of the year.
I agree with you about dogs staying outside. You have shelter for them and they stay warm. I have beagles that stay out all year round. Their houses are insulated and have straw bedding. I had one in house for 2 days because she had a growth removed from face. She HATED being in the house. People also say I should put them in garage. I tell them it is colder in garage then in their warm doghouse. Stay warm.

Kevin my mom used to make a big pot of oatmeal and after breakfast for us she would take the cooled oatmeal and add a bit of milk and get dad to give it to the dogs it filled them up in the cold weather better than dog food stay safe and take care god bless 🙏🙏💕

When I was a kid we used to go to the grandparents up in Illinois during the winter and my Grandpa used to go out and feed the animals. So I do understand what you are going through. I'm trying to get caught up on videos I have missed due to the weather we got here in Texas. Love y'all
Keeping your guardian dogs inside is like keeping a Alaskan sled dog inside. Giving them some shelter is the proper way to do it. They are working dogs. A lot of people don't understand what it's like to have a working dog that's not doing their job. One you run the risk of losing your livestock from hungry predator's. Two your dog will rip apart your house to get back to their job / herd. To them. That's their family to protect. They need to imagine what it would be like for them. It would be like a man or a woman not being able to protect their family from something bad.
A gentle reminder Kev, all that clean fresh fallen snow is a water source if heated up and the cold outside temperature is your built in freezer if ( God forbid ) you loose power .
-27* air temp before windchill was brutal the other day here in eastern Nebraska during chores. I’m glad we’re between kiddings. However, like you said, we anticipate this in our area so we build all of our goat sheds with insulation. R8 insulation with plastic vapor liner and a few goats and babies in the kidding shed and it was 28* in the building while -27 outside.

Close big door at night then crack during day..the tarp will allow exit if needed . This will hold in body heat and help them survive.

A lot of people don't understand what it's like to have a working dog that's not doing their job. One you run the risk of losing your livestock from hungry predator's. Two your dog will rip apart your house to get back to their job / herd. To them. That's their family to protect. They need to imagine what it would be like for them. It would be like a man or a woman not being able to protect their family from something bad.

A gentle reminder Kev, all that clean fresh fallen snow is a water source if heated up and the cold outside temperature is your built in freezer if ( God forbid ) you loose power .
-27* air temp before windchill was brutal the other day here in eastern Nebraska during chores. I’m glad we’re between kiddings. However, like you said, we anticipate this in our area so we build all of our goat sheds with insulation. R8 insulation with plastic vapor liner and a few goats and babies in the kidding shed and it was 28* in the building while -27 outside.
