Horror was one of the most intimate genres for me in 2022. The cinematography of Pearl brought me back to The Wizard of Oz in a strange way, Barbarian’s plot twists conveyed the rediscovery of a time when film stories seemed less predictable, Bones and All created unexpectedly jarring moments and You Won’t Be Alone took me again to experiences of visual story telling from Malick. Uniquely beautiful year in horror.
"Dawn breaks behind the eyes" was by far my favorite from 2022.
'The Innocents' is strongly influenced by AKIRA's predecessor , 'Domu;' which is a one-shot graphic novel worth the read.
Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes was probably my favorite horror of 2022. Such a bizarre and beautiful flick!
Nope has to be at the top of my list. Human nature is our own real existential horror. Spectacle, master piece. Fight me if you dare 😂
You Won't Be Alone was excellent choice, a true masterpice.
Speak No Evil (2022) was the best film I've seen in years, and one of the most unsettling things I've watched. Almost felt like I had seen something, that I should not have. A true masterpiece.
Came here to say this. It’s surprisingly cerebral.
Speak No Evil is the one film that is definitely missing from this list. The Menu may be benefitting more from recency bias. Though the nod for the Innocents is a good contrast.
ya the end was traumatic
That movie was odd and traumatic. If I could go back and unwatch it, I would.
Watched a lot from this list last year but for me, "Speak No Evil" is the most terrifying of all of them.
Haven't seen them all but Nope is my favorite.
"You Won't Be Alone' was a huge surprise for me. I watched it 3 times in one weekend!!
Nanny, X, Pearl, The Black Phone, Nope, Helix Ad 🙃, The Innocents, Barbarian, Bones and All, You Won't Be Alone, and The Menu.
2022 is such a great year for horror. I'm happy lol
Barbarian is my favorite.
Great list and commentary!
You Won’t Be Alone was such a delightful movie to discover last year and was one of my favorite movies of the year alone, let alone a good horror movie. I too felt oddly hopeful at the ending
Most of the movies you talk about are on my watch list already, so it really rassure me that it could be some great ones !
For a few weeks now, I started to watch a movie each sunday afternoon or evening, it's a great thing to do to catch up all these movies I've never seen.
Great list!
Incredible video (as always)! Every time yall drop a new video, it makes my day, especially when it's about horror! Just saw the Oscar nominations for this year, and of course, no horror movies to be seen 😒 not surprised, just disappointed.
ANYWAY, I was wondering if you've ever considered making a video about animated movies? Maybe your personal favorites, movies that surprised you, or just some of your opinions on the matter? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that side of cinema 🤩
Resurrection is another great suggestion i haven't really heard people speak of
Rebecca Halls is impeccable in it
My favorite horror of 2022 and there were plenty of good ones to choose from
'You wont be alone' sounds like the anime To your Eternity: beautiful, heartrending, and bloody
Thank You for the Reviews & Video 😀
Thanks 👍
X is great.. the prequel's not bad either. Ti West makes good films
smile absolutely deserves a spot on this list kinda unfortunate nobody is talking about it
It does not.
Good list. I've seen a couple of these. A couple I haven't even heard of.
Awesome!
Just watched The Menu because of this. What if Gordon Ramsay were evil?
More like “what if he was nicer?”
@@thescapegoatmechanism8704 lmao
How are people in the comments here saying Nope isn't a horror movie when the vore scene is one of the most distressing things I've seen in a movie since the ending of The Lighthouse lol
2022 was a really great year for horror just on an experimentation level and the variety we got. Horror really thrives when it experiments, samples, and blends with other genres, and this versatility is why I love it so much. The fact that we can have straightforward slashers, comedies, body horror, sci-fi, and psychological thrillers all in one year is a testament to how thriving the genre is today, and it only makes me excited for the future
I'd say my personal favorites this year were Nope, The Menu, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and Hatching, at least from what I've been able to seen. I still want to watch the Hellraiser reboot, You Won't Be Alone, V/H/S 99, and Nanny sounds really interesting
Two pictures that reference Katsuhiro Otomo on this list. Nice.
I think Skinamarink has stayed on my mind probably as long as Nope. It definitely deserves a mention for being an experimental slow burn that makes you go back in time to the mind of your childhood self with all the conciousness and wearyness of an adult, making the whole experience as confusing, frightful and haunting as it is for it's leading children.
Skinamarink is definitely for next year's list for me👍
Great year for horror
Bones and All was a great film, honestly. Would have rather been warned about more explicit scenes in the movie, the one closest to the end specifically, rather than the gore.
It was an amazing year for horror! My favourites were Mad God, Pearl, Nope, Barbarian and Sissy
I’m kinda disappointed The Hatching isn’t on the list, it was a great metaphor of the passage from childhood to adolescence
Really surprised to see Barbarian on this list, there are far better films like Speak No Evil which should've been in its place.
I liked Barbarian but the second half just wasn't good enough and the ending really sucked. Also, I wonder why people aren't talking about its glaring plotholes.
Plotholes like:
1) A regular inbred is supposed to be both mentally and physically weak, but the movie's antagonist (who is the ultimate inbred) has the strength of a Marvel villain. She squashed Keith's head like a melon and ripped that hobo's arm off like it was mozzarella cheese.
2) The door in the basement can be opened and shut only from one side, but somehow the inbred woman managed to open it from the other side every single night (including the night Keith and Tess met) and every time she went back in, she was also able to shut it back properly.
9/10! Not bad
Love Nope! Nope is one of the best films I've seen in years.
Glorious
This unfortunately is the first list of yours I can't agree to at all. I was really disappointed by X, Black Phone and Nope.
X was really, really predictable to me and without any surprises all that's left is a pretty bland throwback to the "dirty" tendencies of 70s movies. It didn't work as a hommage for me but rather a lazy flick.
Black Phone - I have to admit Ethan Hawk, yes, good performance - otherwise the tension didn't really built up but rather got interrupted by the appearances of the dead children. Also the "payoff" did not feel resolving or worth the time at all.
And Nope... Maybe I'm just not smart enough, but aside the weak story all over the place the acting has been so bad. Like soooo bad. And that Akira reference, after enduring this pile of whatever, was like a slap in the face.
Though: The Innocents and Bones and all were really great. Especially the soundtrack of the latter one, as you mentioned, but for both also the unpredictable peaks and characterizations of all roles.
Barbarian, The Menu and You won't be alone are still on my list!
Thanks for this video though again, really like watching your content!
So many movies and I didn't go to the theater once.
I used to watch movies of any genre before 2015, loved to watch a lot of stuff.. but even now when I know horror and suspense are things I enjoy more.. all this just sounds boring, and even when I'm hyped for a movie it sometimes sucks. It's annoying, I'm waiting for Nosferatu, since the director has good movies that I like but even though a great idea might flop
I might be a bit too battle-hardened, but there was nothing particularly horrifying about any of the movies on this list. There's too many dramas being dressed up as horror these days. It's as if Blumhouse has created a new genre of their own - tame horror or palatable horror. Looking forward to the next filmmaker who can craft a genuinely scary movie. In the absence of that I'll settle for interesting - out of all the movies on this list I'll vote for Barbarian in that regard.
Smile
The Sadness
nice
When are you dropping the video of your favorite movies of the year 2022 not just horror?
Kantara a kannada film
[SPOILERS] The Menu has not aged well in my head. I enjoyed the film when I watched it, but I like it less and less the more I think about it. The biggest issue I have is the lack of motivation. The workers are not given a motivation. Sure, we can glean a motivation from what's on screen, but it doesn't hold up. Why should the workers who are all young and wanting, be willing to die for the chef loss of pleasure and enjoyment? Why can't they take the most obvious lesson from their teacher and enact change in their lives to pursue what they want? In short, The Menu's death cult is idiotic and trivially undone by it's own logic.
Does "Skinamarink" count as a 2023 film or 2022 one lol
I would say 2023 because of its theatrical release. But definitely a contender for this year
The Menu over "Mad God" is tragic
really didn't enjoy The Menu. Liked Deadstream/Piggy/The Sadness much more.
I paid to rent X. Got so bored I stopped paying attention and turned it off around 45 minutes in.
Barbarian and The Menu - no thanks.
The Barbarian started out cool but the “twist” was too goofy. And The Menu is too pretentious like oh well if you don’t like it, you must not understand art. Like Barbarian, it could have been good but it just stole from other ideas. I will say, I loved Finnes performance but Anna Taylor Joy didn’t fit the role IMO.
Looking forward to seeing Pearl.
You Won’t Be Alone, I couldn’t finish it was just too slow and boring.
MEN is missing on this list, is not perfect but it was more interesting and special than some of the movies mentioned here..For example I didn't like X, it was too predictable and was like any other horror movie that I've seen before, Pearl was a much better movie. Bones and All is not an horror movie to me, it wasn't scary at all, just a bit gory but as a movie it was good. Barbarian was just ok I guess, the black phone was fun and my favorites were Nope, The Inocents and The Menu. I haven't seen Nanny and the other one about the witch
It's been a bad year.
FRESH was one of my absolutely favourite films
not number one not even being a horror movie
Nope, nanny and Barbarian?
You really liked them?
Like you enjoyed the story and not just visuals?
What are you trying to say?
@Naruto the Ratio'd man
The movies I mentioned are not good. Not sure why they were included
The Menu was so basic tho
how is the black phone a horror??
Ikr, that's definitely a comedy.
Nope is not a horror movie eather
Amazing to see "diversity" in modern movies. Its so diverse i cant see anything but one colour.
X is the worst script I've ever seen. I turned it off when the girl got eaten by an alligator. A24 is just crap. Ti West never makes anything original...just rehash old stuff not as well.
The Menu kinda sucked IMO. Felt incomplete, unmotivated, and unsubstantial
Putting Nope kinda invalidates the whole list. Such a mediocre flick
how?😮
atleast point out what you found "Mediocre" about it other wise this will come off as if you found trouble understanding it, failed to do so then concluded this. Otherwise best piece of cinema we have gotten in years. It actually talks exactly about you in this context.
rewatch it lol it's fantastic
This list is all over the place. "Nope" isn't horror. It's a sci-fi thriller with a bit of modern Western. And how are you not gonna have "Smile" in a BEST horror film list of 2022?
the menu was so bad its funny
The Menu ???? Really ? It was soooo bad
🤓
