Years ago when I was in high school, my friends and I were having a sleepover on a weekend and after many attempts I finally managed to persuade them to watch Noroi: The Curse together. It was one of the best night that we still often reminisce to this day.
Noroi the curse is probably the scariest one I've seen. Its so atmospheric heavy and the way it has been shot, the shaky hand camera visuals. Man it was awsm
Cure is great, could not get that ending out of my mind for days... But I wish you picked Pulse instead (even though it is not strictly a horror movie).
Watched half of this list (including Kairo on the viewers' selection). "Dark Water" surprised me the most because it made me feel for the protagonist. The other half are already on my watchlist for a long time. 😅
I am just loving these movie recommendations series. These videos evoke the sweet sense of nostalgia for the movies that I have watched and makes me excited to check out the movies that I haven't watched. And you guys have such a great taste in selecting movies. 👍🙂
I've never seen the US version of Ju-On and when I watched the original when I was younger I had no idea what I was expecting. I'm not really a fan of the horror genre as a whole but I can say for a fact that my experience of Ju-On in my formative years contributed greatly to my overall taste in media as an adult. People who overhype movies are kinda dumb but I honestly think there are some films that every person needs to watch in their life, and this was one of them. Regardless of what you get out of it, it's certainly a masterpiece of cinema.
Ju-on is a pretty good intro into J-Horror. It traumatized me as a kid but having watched it again as an adult, the makeup effects made me realize that it was a lot less scarier than I had made it out to be. But still very eerie though.
any updates regarding good Japanese horror movies for 2022? Love to check out what movies I missed out on over the years. Definitely love the 10 films you highlighted here for this list.
While Perfect Blue is my favorite Japanese horror film I would also recommend Battle Royale. While not strictly set in the horror genre, its fair share of violence, unhinged characters and disturbing situation make it a definite watch for those looking for a dark horrifying film.
The plot of “The house” remembers me a little of the Mexican horror movie “Más negro que la noche, Blacker than The night” by the director Carlos Enrique Taboada. I recommend you this film.
Kōji Shiraishi Has a couple other movies that are similar to Nori. Both Occult(2009) and Cult(2013) are definily worth checking out for fans of Nori: The Curse
Tokyo gore police is actually fantastic on every level. Great starship troopers esque satire with cyber punk environment, incredible direction, extremely fun and incredibly impactful gore
Noroi The Curse is good, despite some flaws. The way it was arranged movie wise, we too act as a detective along with Kobayashi and his cameraman. Because we follow and see everything just like we are a part of the paranormal team with Kobayashi as the leader, we feel the unsettling atmosphere that he and the cameraman feel. The audience engagement was what made this movie stayed in my mind.
Takashi Miike's _The Happiness of the Kataguris_ (loosely based on the South Korean film _The Quiet Family_ which you featured in your Korean Horror video) is, dare I say, even more insane than the original. Wikipedia describes it as, "surreal horror-comedy in the farce tradition, which includes claymation sequences, musical and dance numbers, a karaoke-style sing-along scene, and dream sequences."
I used to watch horror movies and play scary video games with a Neighboor when i was a kid, he was a little older than me, and he was starting to get into Japanese Horror Films. After he showed me Ju-On, i didn't came back to that house for weeks, i spent years feeling Kayako behind my neck, that movie is insanely terryfing for me.
Ain’t gonna lie, I’ll never get over my first watch of Juon, after watching the grudge, and the very first time you see kayako, it reeeally looked like she was holding a basketball & was insanely..bewildered? Amazed? By the 😮 face she made 😂 it ruined my experience
YES! I'm so glad that Perfect Blue gets the top pick!!! Perfect Blue is hands down my favorite horror movie. It's absolutely amazing, and it's such a satisfying watch. I literally punched the air when it popped up as the top pick. XD Knowing we share that opinion, I'll definitely be checking out the other movies on this list that I haven't seen before.
@Screened I've been going through his filmography, I watched Millennium Actress, Paprika, and Good Morning. Paprika is already one of the best films I've ever seen.
AWESOME LIST! Have seen them all except Audition, AND you included Kwaidan, a true gem not only of horror but of cinema in general. I would have added only Kairo because it's one of my favorites. Really liked your presentation and you have a new suscriber.
Inunaki Mura (Howling Village) 2020 wasn't bad too. It's been long haven't seen a great jhorror movies and good jhorror movies are very hardly made these days. Howling Village was kind of watchable and it's from Shimizu Takashi, same director of Original Grudge Ju-On. He's movies are kind of hit and missed after the success of The Grudge. Howling Village though he did kind of right. I recommend to those looking for recent Japanese horror movie.
Some of the Kara no Kyoukai, primarily 2 and 3, anime movies were pretty good. Not quite as terrifying as these on the list but the atmosphere and the music make up for it.
i dont know why but noroi is one of my favorite horror movies if not my favorite of all time , maybe its because i do feel it as a real found footage . Never they use something that break the spell like the monster of big mouth in grave encounters that ruins the movie lol
personally not the biggest fan of House as a movie, but i do think everyone should watch it, ESPECIALLY in a group. watching my friends first time reactions to House and all the laughs we had was priceless.
I really like the movies you chose! In my opinion, I´d make one change, Noroi out Kairo in. I think Kairo does the same thing that ringu or Ju On but in a very original way, and It has some of the scariest scenes I´ve ever seen, also I think that noroi does very good with the found footage thing, but in terms of horror and scary moments, they are at the very end.
My local public library system at least used to have copies of a bunch of old Japanese classics (it was through them I first saw Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, among others). To my surprise, they also had Kwaidon and House, the latter of which did not so far as I remember have subtitles, which was...interesting.
Audition, Kwaidan and I have a Tales of Terror from Tokyo that are very short films, some totally terrifying. The Wailing is pretty good but I guess that's Korean. I own many of these and have seen all of them.
2 other Japanese horror movies that is good as well are One Missed Call from 2003 and Sweet Home from 1989. And Sweet Home is free to watch here on RUclips and yes its the same Sweet Home as the video game that Capcom made for the Famicom.
Just finished watching Strange Circus (2005) a few minutes ago. Came back to say that this film is probably the most disturbing out of all of these, even surpassing Audition imo. Really heavy subject matter and is not for the faint of heart. Would still recommend it though 👍
I remember.. the girl look like teenager with straight hair/uniform dress and attack bo staff on army monsters who's look like but no eyes and naked. I thought she was normal teenager girl. I assumed if it was japanese or not. I wish i want to remember what's the tile of movie, its forgotten movie i think.
Hideo Nakada is the director of RING, which introduced the trend of J-Horror. He's a cinephile. the TV video scene was inspired by Cure, and the rendition of the haunting scene was taken from "Videodrome" and Andrei Tarkovsky "Mirror." This Sence In fact, it is a scene that does not exist in the original novel. You can see how cinephile he is.
What are your favorite Japanese Horror movies?
Definitely Dark Water. Not just for the horror but also the emotions it hit me with whilst watching.
Noroi the Curse was really good, it gives Lake Mungo feels and it's creepy atmosphere!
Ringu for sure. I also have a soft spot for Ringu 0
Battle Royale is pretty good.
Definitely Perfect Blue!
Noroi: The Curse, is so underrated, it was the first horror film to actually scare me in years. Glad it was included.
Yeah that ending got to me...Kagutaba
Same here
Same here!
@@Screened Senpai noticed me! Thanks for the great content and film recommendations.
I'm glad someone mentioned it. Noroi is indeed really underrated.
Perfect Blue is the perfect ending for this one, love Satoshi Kon films!
Yeah he was great with psychological horror!
@@Screened He distorts your sense of reality where you question everything that has happened in the entire film to the point of racking your brains out, his films just leaves you in awe.
Satoshi Kon made some great anime movies. Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Perfect Blue are some of the great Anime movies from him. He will be always miss.
Years ago when I was in high school, my friends and I were having a sleepover on a weekend and after many attempts I finally managed to persuade them to watch Noroi: The Curse together.
It was one of the best night that we still often reminisce to this day.
I was abnormally ecstatic to find out that Perfect Blue was number one
The films are not in order.
Ju-on is sometimes criticized for bad effects but I think the simple white face paint makes it even creepier
Usually quality with special effects is linked to the budget
Ju-On is very simple, but it's effective.
it was realistic and scary back in the day, that's all that matters
Bro the scene at the bed, with the two of them starring... I can´t tell more than 5 movies that can produce such a scary impact in one scene.
It’s one of the most terrifying films I’ve seen
Good list! You especially included Confessions / Kokuhaku (2010) which is one of my favorite Japanese revenge films of all time.
Such a satisfying ending 👍
Noroi the curse is probably the scariest one I've seen. Its so atmospheric heavy and the way it has been shot, the shaky hand camera visuals. Man it was awsm
It's definitely one of the most unsettling 👍
@@Screened one of the best yess! Also love ur videos sir!
Man, 'Cure' is such a masterpiece. Worth getting on blu-ray.
Hi, does it have japanese title? Thanks
Oh nvm will just try to search it on google. Thank you
So glad “Dark Water” & “Confessions” are on here. They are my most favorite J-movies.
Noroi is fucking awesome, is one of the few i actually got chills up in my spine
Cure is great, could not get that ending out of my mind for days... But I wish you picked Pulse instead (even though it is not strictly a horror movie).
We enjoy both 👍 although I feel less people know about Cure.
@@Screened Even less people know about "Loft" which was too strangely compelling, despite being rather low budget.
Watched half of this list (including Kairo on the viewers' selection). "Dark Water" surprised me the most because it made me feel for the protagonist. The other half are already on my watchlist for a long time. 😅
Yeah Dark Water is very sad. The mother sacrificed her life and death for the daughter.
The real horror is when your Asian parents know that you scored less than 99%
This was a great video with interesting selections and just the right amount of explanation. Thanks!

These movies are too scaring for me. I will wait for the Disney's remakes.
Disney remakes will be like grudge becomes a fairy 😆
A personal favourite is One Missed Call. The slow reveal of the heroine's struggles and the twists in the story make for such a good atmosphere

Nice topic. I like J-horrors a lot. I've watched at least 20 of these.
Those little pieces you put of Noroi gave me some real chills 😖😖😖
Yeah it's one creepy movie 🍿
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING PERFECT BLUE!!!!
any updates regarding good Japanese horror movies for 2022? Love to check out what movies I missed out on over the years. Definitely love the 10 films you highlighted here for this list.
Fun fact: The piano scene in House was the inspiration for the haunted piano enemy in Super Mario 64.
死霊の罠& ヒルコ 妖怪ハンター
Seems even more underrated….
While Perfect Blue is my favorite Japanese horror film I would also recommend Battle Royale. While not strictly set in the horror genre, its fair share of violence, unhinged characters and disturbing situation make it a definite watch for those looking for a dark horrifying film.

I am so happy you included satoshi kons masterpiece. It is an experience!
I think 'Death Tube' was an awesome Japanese horror movie. Not well known and I think it deserves a remake
Because of Confessions I can’t listen to the “that’s the way uh huh uh huh I like it” song the same again.
Kōji Shiraishi Has a couple other movies that are similar to Nori. Both Occult(2009) and Cult(2013) are definily worth checking out for fans of Nori: The Curse
Perfect Blue is iconic and will never gets old. This film is legendary in Asian horror.
Thank you so much for including Dark Water
Tokyo gore police is actually fantastic on every level. Great starship troopers esque satire with cyber punk environment, incredible direction, extremely fun and incredibly impactful gore
The Doll Master is a good one too. Fun deaths and a nice settings with creepy human like dolls all over the place.
Noroi The Curse is good, despite some flaws. The way it was arranged movie wise, we too act as a detective along with Kobayashi and his cameraman. I would add Exte. NOT the one on Tubi but available on RUclips. About killer hair extensions. It's crazy. also Uzumaki or spiral series.
The forest of love (the show, haven't seem the movie yet) is absolutely fantastic
wait, no mention of Carved The Slit-Mouthed Woman?

Ringu started it all..❤
Wrong… Japanese horror has existed much longer than Ring (1998)

Tetsuo: The Iron Man was a great cyberpunk/body horror full of surrealism, psychological horror, techphobia and gore.
Nice. I missed this one..

asian ghost movies are unbeatable
Noroi: The Curse. My favorite.
Ju-On, Ringu, Dark Water and Audition are all great. Other really good ones are Kairo (Pulse) and Reincarnation.
regardless if they are objectively bad/ dated effects, the horror of ringu and ju-on will *always* unsettle me deeply
Tetsuo the Iron Man. I promise you've never seen a film like it before.
Also, Cold Fish.
I would pick Tag, it’s been a while since I’ve been watched that movie but I remember the movie being weird and grotesque
i regret you not having included pulse. i looove that film by kiyoshi kurosawa, it's way to good and unsettleing, left me feeling bleak for weeks
Marebito

the junji ito movie collection is good.
Tbh compared to the manga it ain’t that great :( they could have made it 10x more creepy
Yo Evil dead trap is super underrated and no one ever talks about it. Its like a giallo meets j-body horror super trippy but cool.
