I don't think it's to replicate Asian look..she did it around 2017 before K-pop really hit America. Its just her recent surgery to get an uplifted look made her previous more obvious. I feel like beauty standards are way too high. It's like you're expected to wear makeup. Look feminine or masculine all the time. which you don't have to do. we should honestly be able to wear whatever we want without backlash. I mean, i don't care what others think when i go out in public. But still, no one should be judged for what they wear, like, or how they live their lives. People can have plastic surgery if they want. But I don't accept the idea of kpop idols having to be forced to get it. Also, the fact that people will say mean things to others. "you're not pretty enough' "you're too ugly/fat" "no one would want to date or marry you" if people say those things to you, don't listen to them. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Don't let other people's opinions run your like and make you feel like you aren't worth anything. I hope Edvasion's video will shed light on the fact that makeup, plastic surgery, being made up llike a doll, or being skinny, isn't always the best thing. People are just too judgmental and think that everyone should have the same beauty standards. I hope people just realize that they are beautiful in their own ways.

The whole women more important characteristic is "being pretty " is such a toxic mindset, I am attractive and everyone I meet makes a big deal out of it, like I am nothing but a pretty face for them, my value as a person shouldn't be graded on my looks
I recently found body neutrality, and I must say, it resounded to me so much. You don't even have to regard yourself beautiful to value yourself. Just think about all the thinks your body does and appreciate that. That's way better than putting too much or too less emphasis on your body and beauty.
Honestly when it comes to beauty standards in the kpop community, it *gets* toxic. First of all, most companies will have visuals for a group, (the most attractive member) which honestly is a bit messed up to me since I believe all members should be deemed as “pretty.” And lets not even talk about the fandoms, people will literally hate the smallest details of kpop idols, whether it be their nose, weight, height, etc… their companies might even make them get plastic surgery as well. The thing is, everyone in kpop must look beautiful to even debut at all. Even if your vocals are amazing, or your dancing is top notch, you *have* to look pretty
It bleeds to the general community or it stems from the general Korean community. I heard that a regular person can't go out of the house even just to go to the nearest convenience store without dressing up and the clothes they have to wear should be trendy and branded, any old clothes and cheap brands no matter how good they look are judged. Parents also give plastic surgery as graduation gifts so they have better career success/opportunities
@@hinatamercury Korean here and from Seoul, this is not exactly true, I feel like I have to clarify a couple of things. We don't dress up to go to convenience stores, we actually go there in house clothes. It's pretty common to see people go around their neighborhood in hoodies and slippers with socks on (sometimes people on the subway too). I live in a pretty well-off neighborhood and trust me, nobody gets out all dressed up to buy ramyeon. To be honest, sometimes we don't dress up even to go to the neighborhood restaurants. About old clothes, we do like to keep up with fashion but people don't get heavily judged because they're wearing old style clothes unless you are in a really toxic environment, which tbh can happen all around the world. We don't have to be branded, most teenagers and people in their early 20s shop from cheap stores around universities or online stores. And by cheap i mean that H&M is more expensive lol. What you just described sounds more about stereotypes based on really REALLY wealthy families or areas, not the whole society. The type of people that do what you just mentioned are usually the ones that are trying hard to get into or look like they are form the suuuper upper class, to get married into a rich family or stuff like that. I agree on the obsession with looking good, it's a huge problem here, but the things you described are a bit too extreme. Plastic surgery is a big issue, we have plastic surgery ads all around the city and on the long run it is bad for your mental health. The "graduation" surgery gift is partially true, kids ask for double eyelid surgery after graduation so they would have time to recover and look "good" before starting university. Some people get more than the double eyelid surgery, but in general the first step for everybody is that. In conclusion, Korean society is messed up and we need to relax a bit when it comes to the obsession with aesthetics and plastic surgery, but we aren't at that extreme level... yet.

And even with the plastic surgury, its so much exaggerated. MOST people there dont do plastic surgurys, ether you are from a rich family or its an extreme case where its needed and not just for fun. All of a sudden people are trying to make it seem like Everyone in Korea does some kind of surgurys, while NONE of the people i know, have never had anything done. "SOME" is not the same as "ALL"..
Gigi and Bella’s mom saying that modeling is a feminine thing has me real confused…has she not heard of male models? But also as a woman it’s okay to have masculine qualities and as a man have feminine qualities. Or I guess what society sees as masculine vs. feminine because that varies depending on culture and time period. That's why you see more older people refusing to use modern technologies or accept new culture. Their viewpoint of the world has been solidified and it's hard to change. Changing their view means changing their whole world, and there's nothing more scarier to humans than the unknown, thats why most of us are obsessed in searching for new species or aliens... We are afraid of the unknown.
not even that long ago being skeletal thin was the beauty standard for models because designers would want their clothing to be presented exactly the same way as clothes would look on a hanger. so at least the industry has changed for the better in some way, still doesnt really represent the average person but at least being sickly skinny isnt the ideal now at least in the western side of things (this isnt counting instagram models those are a whole other breed of messed up standards)
Well, it's the same as saying volleyball is a masculine sport while there are tons of female volleyball players. The thing about gender roles is not that it actually is what each gender does or does not. Modelling doesn't become a masculine hobby just because men do it, and volleyball doesn't become a female hobby, just becaue women do it. It's about the underlying expectation. What it comes down to, is that for modelling you have to be slim and thin and pretty (not everywhere of course, but that's the general assumption) which are all "feminine traits" in the eyes of these people. On the other hand, for volleyball, you have to be sporty, have muscles (be "bulky" as she said), which are more masculine traits.

I have a double chin, hooded sleepy looking eyes, a tall and bulbous nose, thinner lips, and I'm starting to accept it. Honestly though it's hard, i have a phobia of getting my photos taken but at least now I accept that this adverse reaction to my own looks is something I have to change, and not the features themselves.
You have to learn to be more gentle with yourself, treat youself like you treat your loved ones, I don't know your age but you must be a young person, so you're probably at your best in terms of looks, in 30 years you'll look back and think that you weren't really that bad. Also, beauty is a really fleeting thing, even beautiful people get old and wrinkly, nature doen't care about "looks", so love yourself as a whole, our time in earth is precious, and so are you. From Real Housewives you could tell Yolanda really controlled their lives and decided for example which uni Gigi was going to go to in New York and where she was going to live etc. And the recent incident with Zayn I'm sure Yolanda had a big part in the splitting of Gigi and him because Yolanda is probably an intolerable mother-in-law and I'm just waiting for the day when either of the Hadid sisters break and snap at their mom.
I can't imagine what is would be like to have a mother that is nitpicking every single thing you do. Although they were well off, they must have had a depressing childhood, with every second spent giving up things they enjoyed because their mum was pushing them to go into modelling. It's interesting to find out that both Gigi and Bella had to suspend their university studies (Gigi in criminal psychology and Bella in photography) to focus on their modelling careers and both had stong interest in sports during high school (Gigi was captian for her school's volleyball team even though her mum was against it and Bella was an equestrian and wanted to compete in the Olympics) which almost gives me the vibe that their mother wanted them to model more than they did. Parents forcing their dreams and ideals on to their children is a whole topic in itself.
When you mentioned Heeseung’s nose and how people reacted to it, it makes me so sad that people would react that way. I’ve heard that he actually wanted his old nose back, and he looks beautiful with his original nose. I have a prominent nose and it does not look like the beauty standard of a nose, it’s more round and looks more like a button. So seeing how he went from having the same slim nose, pointed tip to having his original nose was nice to see. I just wish people would stop hating :/
I used to look at predebut (pre-iland) photos of him and think "why did he change his nose?" because I honestly think it looked better than the ultra thin and high nose he had when he debuted, he looks more natural now, more mature even. I think some Engenes were shocked at first but they are getting used to it by now. I really hope he can get more confident in the future, it saddens me seeing him being insecure in his looks :( he's not only handsome but a great person and SO talented (sorry for my english)

She was basing her preference off of what she thought would fit her daughter well, and while I do agree that it was distasteful, I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it insulting. Again, I'm not looking to defend anyone necessarily just giving my unbiased analysis on the situation. This is also coming from someone who has heard in 2021 people referring to cat eye makeup basically as Asian appropriated style by other people. There was recently an episode of Weekly Idol where Stray Kids (kpop group) guest starred, and on one of the segments one of the “fan requests” the show selected was for them to measure the members’ proportions-shoulders, wrists, _waists._ It honestly made me very uncomfortable and while they did try to make a joke about most of it, I can’t help but think about how stuff like that can enable body dysmorphia for people already embroiled in an industry where beauty is so intensely calculated.
The episode was very uncomfortable. The new hosts is less offensive than the previous ones, but I see when it come to body image, kpop (and korean entertaiment industry in general) is just fucking oblivious about it. Korean tv programs measures girl group members' waist on live television, in one program they even compare the size of her waist to the host's thighs. Idols talking about diets way to casually, too.
I recently had the surreal experience of Machine Gun Kelly and Meghan Fox coming into the coffee shop I work at. They were literally STUNNING visually. I truly appreciated seeing such beauty, but also felt like a cave troll for the next 3 days.

So, story time. I learned about pretty privilege relatively early on in life. Unfortunately. I'm not sure if this relevant, but I'm Asian (Filipino) and early on, I was taught by my mom (Filipino, dad's white), that if I wasn't thin and pretty I'd never find a husband. I was four. Unfortunately, that was just the beginning and I developed an ED and hated my face and body in my teens and through my 20s because I didn't fit into the white, southern (from the States) beauty standards. I wasn't considered "pretty" unless I was thin, then I was fetishized because just, ugh, some people. I couldn't get the thin, chiseled face associated with most European looks unless I unhealthily lost weight. Which means, every time I looked in the mirror, I hated what I saw. When I gained weight because of health issues, looking in the mirror or any reflective surface was horrifying to me. I saw everything I hated and nothing I liked, let alone loved. I'm dismissed now because I don't have the super thin Asian body and lost all "pretty" privilege. I'm in my 30s and it wasn't until I started getting into Kpop, watching Asian dramas, seeing people that looked more like me, that I actually became more comfortable with myself. I realized that we Asians naturally have rounder features, and so my rounder face is okay. I still struggle with my ED, although not anywhere near as bad as when I was in my teens and 20s. I have a love hate relationship with the idea of pretty privilege. I want to be thin and considered pretty by others because I was taught that's where validation comes from, outward, not inward. But I can't afford all the things to make me "pretty" and I have several chronic illnesses that make it hard to just exist, let alone workout like I need to to become thin. I feel like I will always be in a battle with my body and outward appearance. I just hope others realize that it's the beauty within, how you treat others, the kindness you give, that makes a person beautiful. It's how I see people, even if I can't see it in myself. Much love to anyone who struggles with these things and what they see in the mirror. And please, for your own mental health, don't seek validation from others. It really isn't worth it. Find it in yourself. That's where you'll truly be happiest. It's what I'm working on and the closer I get, the happier I feel. 💜
I'm really going through the same things u went through (and still which Ur going thru) and I turn 18 in 4 days. So yes, I also learned ABT pretty privilege at a young age. I developed ED, OCD, ADHD and also had epilepsy (for 6-8 yrs. Started when I was 7 yrs old lol). I didn't realize I had ED since I was like...6? Until a month ago. I relate so bad and with what you just wrote, it's like my heart wrote this. I'm trying to love myself even tho I'm struggling, but I'm still trying :'). And darker skin is beautiful, despite what our families might think of it. When I was younger I used to tan like it's nobody's business. I still do when I'm outside playing sports. I love my natural tan and the kind of tan I can get with little effort. I refuse to fall into the stereotype that lighter skin Asians are more beautiful because it's classist and tunes into Western desires. You are beautiful. this is a very interesting topic. I believe that "ugly" and "pretty" people face hardships all the same: "ugly" people are seen as less valuable, they get bullied and/or ignored by the mere fact of how their face or body looks, while "pretty" people are held to a standard that's very hard to reach in real life to keep their beauty and they are deemed less intelligent. I think the only people that truly have privileges are rich people (like the actual rich people that come from generations of wealth and power), because that's something that doesn't change; being rich was "in" 300 years ago and is "in" now, whereas beauty standards change overtime.

Ugly people generally have it far worse, take it from someone who had a massive glow-up and knows what it is like on both sides. The fact that people try so hard to make it seem like attractive people have it just as bad as attractive ones is ridiculous in itself, if being better-looking is ~so~ bad then why do people seek out plastic surgery to look and feel better? On the other hand those apparently oh-so-victimized attractive people barely ever try to make themselves look uglier Like sure you can say both have their negative sides, but it's definitely not "all the same" (on average). It should be obvious even from the examples they gave...humans are very social creatures so especially at a young age being bullied etc. can be devastating, definitely moreso than "being deemed less intelligent" (which is, like I already said, wrong anyways and teachers also give preferential treatment to more good-looking students) and uhh feeling pressured to keep their beauty? lol (Fun fact: studies show parents also care more about kids who are seen as being better-looking, even at a young age) It's so weird how people are always so desperate to make it seem like everyone has it equally bad or whatever blah blah. Extreme would be getting surgery. The device he promoted gives similar results to getting a facial, which is not surgery. Taking care of your skin and improving it is nothing that people should be shamed for. If people want to improve their skin then that should be fine.

I've been dealing with anorexia for 1 year and im already not overweight so short of story in just 1 year my body was literally dying! But no matter how much weight i dropped whenever i search " slim inspo " on the internet it seems like im "not skinny enough " . My bf was worried about me a lot and tried to convince me to start recovery because it just got to a point where i stopped drinking water as well because it made me feel fat . But because of this channel and because of you I'm 2 days in recovery now ! I hope i make it . Beauty standards are definitely toxic...but I dont think we will ever stop caring about them to some degree. I'm too scared to have cosmetic surgery but yeah im willing to give up cake to look better. I'm tired of being the fat ugly friend that has "a great personality " with a "pretty face". Ive had cruel people stop, point and laugh at me and call me names while shopping. High school was hell with all the nicknames and people throwing trash at me. I've lost 20# this year so far and have 45 to go. I'll never have to worry about a pretty tax but at least I'll be able to go shopping in peace
If I had a choice, i would prefer to be hot. Growing up, I got bullied pretty bad because of my weight and looks. I've felt with depression and have had to work on looking at my body without wanting to throw up or wishing I would get cancer so that the chemo would make me loose weight (yeah, my preteen brain was in an extremely dark place and i still deal with it to this day). I also ended up in an abusive relationship for 3 years because I genuinely thought that i was so disgusting that no one could ever love me or even stand my body so I grabbed to my ex because I thought he would be the only person who would ever want to have me as a partner. Being ugly is hard and society doesn't make things easy for anyone, so yeah, I would prefer to deal with people cat calling me all the time than having to deal with suicidal thoughts because of my genetics

There's actually another bad side to being "pretty" that i havent seen anyone mention but basically i feel like people dont see us as a person they literally see us as an object or pet or whatever (at least from my prespective , which i dont mean to be arrogant or something i always had terrible horrible self esteem but have always experienced a lot of pretty privileged to the point where rationality i think "yeah ok i must be pretty" but i just cant believe myself still ) but basically i've noticed people i meet rarely value more my achievements or who i am as a person like they tend to disregard that and just have the "ur pretty" to say about me like they areny willing to see me as anything else . For example i have had many relationships not work out cuz i literally felt like an accessory or a pet , they wouldn't care about anything that was about me as a person , i even had one guy straight up tell me he liked going out with me in public cuz i made him look edgier and i was like "wtf do u mean?" And he goes "well when people see u walking next to me and i really dont look like much they are gonna assume im really cool or interesting or have something special about me cuz ur with me" . It really didnt sit right with me especially because of other comments of that nature i've had from other people . And like when i go out with friends they always tell me they are counting on my looks to get us all drinks, just the other day we were going out and they told me that and when i went to get the drinks we payed less and even then they were still "u should've asked to pay even less , u could have negotiated better" and it really fucks with my head and self esteem like i just want to have fun not obsess over how i look cuz i feel responsible to use it to get free stuff
The advantages still outweigh the drawbacks tho. It's not about being extremely pretty but just a bit more than average. You have to think about beauty as a percentile. You'll have maybe 70% of the population withing the range of 4 to 6 and as you go up or down, the number decrease more and more. When you see it that way, it's not surprising to see how more ugly/pretty than average people are treated. Not that it's a good thing but being too different even in supposedly individualist societies isn't always seen as a good thing ironically. By the way, your problems don't come from you but clearly the people around you. You examples clearly don't apply to other people in your situation. It's easy to see that.
I truly feel your words, women are just a nice jewellery to man. It’s quite uncomfortable when you don’t know if people talk to you, cause they are really interest in you, or just because of your looks Of course there is pretty privilege and you get a lot of attention. You should watch the Kdrama called My ID is Gangnam Beauty. It covers a similar concept from a feminist perspective, and as a bonus the female relationships in the show are lovely
That show is far from feminist, it trys to put out a good message but fails where most of these kind of shows fail whenever they're trying to do something feminist.

But I try to consider things within a cultural lens, and I think the show does its best to address sexist behaviour and how media and class systems serve to judge, control and silence women. You can’t take western principles of feminism and apply them to other cultures, without considering the context in which they are operating.

This is the exact kind of mixed message thing that happens in films of my country, I can tell you from experience , at least, that it doesn't do much except scratching the surface at empowerment . I relate to this so much being trans, like we were told and pressured into looking a certain way and its so difficult to look cis or fit into society's standards of being a woman. I felt happy and free when I just say "F this".
I'm cis and i feel pressured to look a certain way but i cannot imagine just how bad it is for trans folks. Not all cis people look "traditionally femenine/masculine" There are thousands of cis women with broad shoulders, waists, flat chests, more naturally ripped and sharp features and cis men with bigger chest or hips, soft and round features, and i can only imagine how that messes up with a trans persons body image. I haven't watched it myself, but to anyone who are planning to watch the movie Beauty Tax I would ask that you please exercise caution in interpreting the messages it is trying to convey. When Edvasian explained the main premise of the film, I found it really suspicious because it feels like one of those media that accuse underprivileged groups of resentment, which enables people to not listen to their concerns. I mean, I personally hope I'm wrong but it feels like the plot is set up to reinforce beauty standards by depicting non-beautiful people as envious, resentful people that they would LEGISLATE against the interests of beautiful people (who are not at fault for being born beautiful). I will search for this movie immediately after this video.
As a long time watcher of Japanese films, it's pretty much a comedy skit (specifically dark humor)more on showing the absurdity of beauty standards. A lot of comics and movies tend to make issues like these look extreme just to highlight how absurd it is. It just takes a little bit of cultural familiarity to not just see or interpret literally.
I'm in my 40's and i try the best i can to deal with the signs of aging but I can see the jowls forming already. I don't have wrinkles but I can't stand seeing my face drooping. My fiance tells me its not like that, that my face is fine but I can see it; i know I'm obsessing but i have always had self-image issues as Ive been constantly told I'm ugly. I think if I had the money I would have gone through surgery, specially now as a mature woman. I used to frown upon plastic surgery but when we're in our teens and 20s we don't really think of ourselves in our 30s, 40s or even older and back in the 90s a lot of people thought plastic surgery was low or of bad taste; I remember a lot of celebrities hiding their procedures and a lot of controversial news popping up trying to out them and their procedures. I think the normalization of plastic surgery is a double edged sword because while its not as frowned upon it has now become a sign of wealth. As a side note i don't like the Kardashians at all, i think they're the epitome of toxic behavior but I can understand where Kris was coming from. I'm middle aged but I don't feel like that and I think its a kind of dysphoria in many cases because you want my inner me to match the outer me. I see my face as I grow older and I don't recognize it sometimes. I take pride in my age tho, Ive seen a lot of things and experienced a lot of things but I would like the face that I have to look like the one I had in my 20s or 30s even if people found it ugly. I think that's why the part of the vid talking about Kris's surgery hit so close to home.

I’d rather not have outside sources telling me that my appearance isn’t enough so I could be more comfortable with myself, with or without makeup and certain clothes, because I love doing makeup and dressing up, that is purely for myself and I love being artistic and creative with my style and aesthetics. I’d rather simply being truly comfortable within my skin, and not have people tell me that it’s ugly or weird or make really creepy and unwarranted comments on my body.

The thing with beauty is that everyone finds different things 'attractive'. E.g. someone might find who is conventionally unatractive to most people the prettiest person in the world. In other words: beauty is subjective
True, but there's a beauty standard people grow up with, and at least in asian countries, since there so homogenous, many people like the same ideal. Also, mpst of the time you can still tell if a person is pretty or not, even if they're not your type
My point was that it is a very complicated subject to discuss because everyone's taste is different. Yes, they can agree if someone is pretty or not, but what I feel like what real beauty should be like, and how I grasp it, is if you feel attracted or not, because it doesn't matter if you "think" that they are beautiful, thoughts and feel are different. As I said it is complicated and I find difficult expressing thoughts/emotions into words

depends on the situation, I suffer from asperger, anxiety and hyperacousis, getting into social situations is complicated and people made the effort to get to know me because I'm mildly pretty and have an original look otherwise they would have left me to my misery lol same for romantic or professional situations, it actually made my life better, not gonna lie.

Sexual assault is worse for people especially women with pretty privilege because people will use your beauty as an excuse to sexually abuse you and it's not OK as a survivor of sexual assault and having people in your family using your beauty and your body shape(curvy) as an excuse to why you ended up experience that trauma. All of the Jenners including mom had surgery before her face-lift on TV they need to quit it with all that cap, and Bella had more than just her nose done. If you want to have surgery I think it's fine, but it creates this insane beauty standard when they pretend that their beauty routine or vitamins made their bone structure or fat placement change, especially when they're selling vitamins and skincare products
I’ve always felt for the Hadid sisters (as much as one can feel pity for the ultra beautiful and wealthy, that is lol). Yolanda has always been a high pressure stage mom and no doubt caused disordered eating in those girls. Bella was born very pretty, but didn’t have the “fashion model” look like her sister, so I can only imagine feeling so bad about yourself in comparison. Like she would be the most beautiful girl an ANY room naturally, but her family put her up against the most beautiful women in the WORLD. And she didn’t inherit the more European “standards” like her sister. Just gross all around. She definitely is one of the most beautiful women (in my opinion) now. I hope she has found peace in her looks.
Pretty privilege is such an interesting and confusing concept to me because I get told I have pretty privilege but literally most days I believe I’m unattractive because of bodily image dysmorphia. So like am I pretty or not because people and my brain are telling two totally different stories.
It depends per person! If someone calls you pretty they genuinely think you're pretty. You can dislike the way you look and that's also okay. Theres always people who will think you're pretty and people who will think you aren't

Because I’ve literally been told that I’m denying my pretty privilege and I was just like “but I literally think I’m ugly!” Attractiveness is so subjective that I can’t consider pretty privilege to be a thing like how white privilege or able-bodied privilege is a thing. Because everybody has such wildly different opinions on what’s attractive and what’s not whereas race and whether you’re disabled or not is set in stone.

Yet I don't relate to it, because I rarely get attention from people because of it either. I also don't try though (I don't wear make up or flashy clothes, and only have my hair in a trendy style like 3 months of the of the year. I notice when I have that particular style, I get the most attention.) But then it's like, in a way not feeling forced to participating in this type of thing and still being seen as I like is also a type of privilege. Nowadays I'm considered 'good looking', but it's like hell between my family members. There are privileges to being perceived as attractive but there are a lot of negatives things too cuz ppl will hate on you because of it.
I recently found body neutrality, and I must say, it resounded to me so much. You don't even have to regard yourself beautiful to value yourself. Just think about all the thinks your body does and appreciate that. That's way better than putting too much or too less emphasis on your body and beauty.
Honestly when it comes to beauty standards in the kpop community, it *gets* toxic. First of all, most companies will have visuals for a group, (the most attractive member) which honestly is a bit messed up to me since I believe all members should be deemed as “pretty.” And lets not even talk about the fandoms, people will literally hate the smallest details of kpop idols, whether it be their nose, weight, height, etc… their companies might even make them get plastic surgery as well. The thing is, everyone in kpop must look beautiful to even debut at all. Even if your vocals are amazing, or your dancing is top notch, you *have* to look pretty

I heard that a regular person can't go out of the house even just to go to the nearest convenience store without dressing up and the clothes they have to wear should be trendy and branded, any old clothes and cheap brands no matter how good they look are judged. Parents also give plastic surgery as graduation gifts so they have better career success/opportunities
the visual is the one who fits the korean beauty standards the most, not necessarily the prettiest because beauty is extremely subjective
@@hinatamercury Korean here and from Seoul, this is not exactly true, I feel like I have to clarify a couple of things. We don't dress up to go to convenience stores, we actually go there in house clothes. It's pretty common to see people go around their neighborhood in hoodies and slippers with socks on (sometimes people on the subway too). I live in a pretty well-off neighborhood and trust me, nobody gets out all dressed up to buy ramyeon. To be honest, sometimes we don't dress up even to go to the neighborhood restaurants. About old clothes, we do like to keep up with fashion but people don't get heavily judged because they're wearing old style clothes unless you are in a really toxic environment, which tbh can happen all around the world. We don't have to be branded, most teenagers and people in their early 20s shop from cheap stores around universities or online stores. And by cheap i mean that H&M is more expensive lol. What you just described sounds more about stereotypes based on really REALLY wealthy families or areas, not the whole society. The type of people that do what you just mentioned are usually the ones that are trying hard to get into or look like they are form the suuuper upper class, to get married into a rich family or stuff like that. I agree on the obsession with looking good, it's a huge problem here, but the things you described are a bit too extreme. Plastic surgery is a big issue, we have plastic surgery ads all around the city and on the long run it is bad for your mental health. The "graduation" surgery gift is partially true, kids ask for double eyelid surgery after graduation so they would have time to recover and look "good" before starting university. Some people get more than the double eyelid surgery, but in general the first step for everybody is that.
In conclusion, Korean society is messed up and we need to relax a bit when it comes to the obsession with aesthetics and plastic surgery, but we aren't at that extreme level... yet.

That's why you see more older people refusing to use modern technologies or accept new culture. Their viewpoint of the world has been solidified and it's hard to change. not even that long ago being skeletal thin was the beauty standard for models because designers would want their clothing to be presented exactly the same way as clothes would look on a hanger. so at least the industry has changed for the better in some way, still doesnt really represent the average person but at least being sickly skinny isnt the ideal now at least in the western side of things (this isnt counting instagram models those are a whole other breed of messed up standards)
Well, it's the same as saying volleyball is a masculine sport while there are tons of female volleyball players. The thing about gender roles is not that it actually is what each gender does or does not. Modelling doesn't become a masculine hobby just because men do it, and volleyball doesn't become a female hobby, just becaue women do it. It's about the underlying expectation. What it comes down to, is that for modelling you have to be slim and thin and pretty (not everywhere of course, but that's the general assumption) which are all "feminine traits" in the eyes of these people. On the other hand, for volleyball, you have to be sporty, have muscles (be "bulky" as she said), which are more masculine traits.

I have a double chin, hooded sleepy looking eyes, a tall and bulbous nose, thinner lips, and I'm starting to accept it. Honestly though it's hard, i have a phobia of getting my photos taken but at least now I accept that this adverse reaction to my own looks is something I have to change, and not the features themselves.
You have to learn to be more gentle with yourself, treat youself like you treat your loved ones, I don't know your age but you must be a young person, so you're probably at your best in terms of looks, in 30 years you'll look back and think that you weren't really that bad. Also, beauty is a really fleeting thing, even beautiful people get old and wrinkly, nature doen't care about "looks", so love yourself as a whole, our time in earth is precious, and so are you. I can't imagine what is would be like to have a mother that is nitpicking every single thing you do. Although they were well off, they must have had a depressing childhood, with every second spent giving up things they enjoyed because their mum was pushing them to go into modelling. It's interesting to find out that both Gigi and Bella had to suspend their university studies (Gigi in criminal psychology and Bella in photography) to focus on their modelling careers and both had stong interest in sports during high school (Gigi was captian for her school's volleyball team even though her mum was against it and Bella was an equestrian and wanted to compete in the Olympics) which almost gives me the vibe that their mother wanted them to model more than they did. Parents forcing their dreams and ideals on to their children is a whole topic in itself.

I used to look at predebut (pre-iland) photos of him and think "why did he change his nose?" because I honestly think it looked better than the ultra thin and high nose he had when he debuted, he looks more natural now, more mature even. There was recently an episode of Weekly Idol where Stray Kids (kpop group) guest starred, and on one of the segments one of the “fan requests” the show selected was for them to measure the members’ proportions-shoulders, wrists, _waists._ It honestly made me very uncomfortable and while they did try to make a joke about most of it, I can’t help but think about how stuff like that can enable body dysmorphia for people already embroiled in an industry where beauty is so intensely calculated.
The episode was very uncomfortable. The new hosts is less offensive than the previous ones, but I see when it come to body image, kpop (and korean entertaiment industry in general) is just fucking oblivious about it. Korean tv programs measures girl group members' waist on live television, in one program they even compare the size of her waist to the host's thighs. Idols talking about diets way to casually, too.
I recently had the surreal experience of Machine Gun Kelly and Meghan Fox coming into the coffee shop I work at. They were literally STUNNING visually. I truly appreciated seeing such beauty, but also felt like a cave troll for the next 3 days.

I learned about pretty privilege relatively early on in life. Unfortunately.
I'm not sure if this relevant, but I'm Asian (Filipino) and early on, I was taught by my mom (Filipino, dad's white), that if I wasn't thin and pretty I'd never find a husband. I was four. Unfortunately, that was just the beginning and I developed an ED and hated my face and body in my teens and through my 20s because I didn't fit into the white, southern (from the States) beauty standards. I wasn't considered "pretty" unless I was thin, then I was fetishized because just, ugh, some people.
I couldn't get the thin, chiseled face associated with most European looks unless I unhealthily lost weight. Which means, every time I looked in the mirror, I hated what I saw. When I gained weight because of health issues, looking in the mirror or any reflective surface was horrifying to me. I saw everything I hated and nothing I liked, let alone loved. I'm dismissed now because I don't have the super thin Asian body and lost all "pretty" privilege.
I'm in my 30s and it wasn't until I started getting into Kpop, watching Asian dramas, seeing people that looked more like me, that I actually became more comfortable with myself. I realized that we Asians naturally have rounder features, and so my rounder face is okay. I still struggle with my ED, although not anywhere near as bad as when I was in my teens and 20s.
I have a love hate relationship with the idea of pretty privilege. I want to be thin and considered pretty by others because I was taught that's where validation comes from, outward, not inward. But I can't afford all the things to make me "pretty" and I have several chronic illnesses that make it hard to just exist, let alone workout like I need to to become thin. I feel like I will always be in a battle with my body and outward appearance.
I just hope others realize that it's the beauty within, how you treat others, the kindness you give, that makes a person beautiful. It's how I see people, even if I can't see it in myself.
Much love to anyone who struggles with these things and what they see in the mirror. And please, for your own mental health, don't seek validation from others. It really isn't worth it. Find it in yourself. That's where you'll truly be happiest. It's what I'm working on and the closer I get, the happier I feel.

I developed ED, OCD, ADHD and also had epilepsy (for 6-8 yrs. Started when I was 7 yrs old lol). I didn't realize I had ED since I was like...6? Until a month ago. I relate so bad and with what you just wrote, it's like my heart wrote this. I'm trying to love myself even tho I'm struggling, but I'm still trying :'). I believe that "ugly" and "pretty" people face hardships all the same: "ugly" people are seen as less valuable, they get bullied and/or ignored by the mere fact of how their face or body looks, while "pretty" people are held to a standard that's very hard to reach in real life to keep their beauty and they are deemed less intelligent. I think the only people that truly have privileges are rich people (like the actual rich people that come from generations of wealth and power), because that's something that doesn't change; being rich was "in" 300 years ago and is "in" now, whereas beauty standards change overtime.

Beauty standards are definitely toxic...but I dont think we will ever stop caring about them to some degree. I'm too scared to have cosmetic surgery but yeah im willing to give up cake to look better. I'm tired of being the fat ugly friend that has "a great personality " with a "pretty face". Ive had cruel people stop, point and laugh at me and call me names while shopping. High school was hell with all the nicknames and people throwing trash at me.
I've lost 20# this year so far and have 45 to go. I'll never have to worry about a pretty tax but at least I'll be able to go shopping in peace

I've felt with depression and have had to work on looking at my body without wanting to throw up or wishing I would get cancer so that the chemo would make me loose weight (yeah, my preteen brain was in an extremely dark place and i still deal with it to this day). I also ended up in an abusive relationship for 3 years because I genuinely thought that i was so disgusting that no one could ever love me or even stand my body so I grabbed to my ex because I thought he would be the only person who would ever want to have me as a partner. Being ugly is hard and society doesn't make things easy for anyone, so yeah, I would prefer to deal with people cat calling me all the time than having to deal with suicidal thoughts because of my genetics
I feel the same, then again I was single for 6 months and I wasnt able to find anyone suitable to be a good partner so...
same, i was ugly as a teen and i felt invisible. puberty did me well and i look better now and even though im just average, id never go back to being ugly.

There's actually another bad side to being "pretty" that i havent seen anyone mention but basically i feel like people dont see us as a person they literally see us as an object or pet or whatever (at least from my prespective , which i dont mean to be arrogant or something i always had terrible horrible self esteem but have always experienced a lot of pretty privileged to the point where rationality i think "yeah ok i must be pretty" but i just cant believe myself still ) but basically i've noticed people i meet rarely value more my achievements or who i am as a person like they tend to disregard that and just have the "ur pretty" to say about me like they areny willing to see me as anything else . For example i have had many relationships not work out cuz i literally felt like an accessory or a pet , they wouldn't care about anything that was about me as a person , i even had one guy straight up tell me he liked going out with me in public cuz i made him look edgier and i was like "wtf do u mean?" And he goes "well when people see u walking next to me and i really dont look like much they are gonna assume im really cool or interesting or have something special about me cuz ur with me" . It really didnt sit right with me especially because of other comments of that nature i've had from other people . And like when i go out with friends they always tell me they are counting on my looks to get us all drinks, just the other day we were going out and they told me that and when i went to get the drinks we payed less and even then they were still "u should've asked to pay even less , u could have negotiated better" and it really fucks with my head and self esteem like i just want to have fun not obsess over how i look cuz i feel responsible to use it to get free stuff

The advantages still outweigh the drawbacks tho. It's not about being extremely pretty but just a bit more than average. You have to think about beauty as a percentile. You'll have maybe 70% of the population withing the range of 4 to 6 and as you go up or down, the number decrease more and more. When you see it that way, it's not surprising to see how more ugly/pretty than average people are treated. Not that it's a good thing but being too different even in supposedly individualist societies isn't always seen as a good thing ironically.
By the way, your problems don't come from you but clearly the people around you. You examples clearly don't apply to other people in your situation. It's easy to see that.

You should watch the Kdrama called My ID is Gangnam Beauty. It covers a similar concept from a feminist perspective, and as a bonus the female relationships in the show are lovely
That show is far from feminist, it trys to put out a good message but fails where most of these kind of shows fail whenever they're trying to do something feminist.

But I try to consider things within a cultural lens, and I think the show does its best to address sexist behaviour and how media and class systems serve to judge, control and silence women. You can’t take western principles of feminism and apply them to other cultures, without considering the context in which they are operating.

This is the exact kind of mixed message thing that happens in films of my country, I can tell you from experience , at least, that it doesn't do much except scratching the surface at empowerment . It leaves misogynist undertones , fails to address any problems as to why women are even judged a particular way. At best, it gives you the message that " Don't judge because people feel bad lol"

Remember when protagonist's mother called her a gangam beauty as a compliment and perfume lady's daughter said, " But my mom is natural " Idk about you, but these kind of scenes feel so condescending. Another thing I do think the show gets wrong is,that instead letting people feel at peace with themselves, it just tells you, "if you're ugly, get surgery and even if bad things happen after the surgery, it sure as hell beats being ugly"

I relate to this so much being trans, like we were told and pressured into looking a certain way and its so difficult to look cis or fit into society's standards of being a woman. I felt happy and free when I just say "F this".

I'm cis and i feel pressured to look a certain way but i cannot imagine just how bad it is for trans folks. Not all cis people look "traditionally femenine/masculine" There are thousands of cis women with broad shoulders, waists, flat chests, more naturally ripped and sharp features and cis men with bigger chest or hips, soft and round features, and i can only imagine how that messes up with a trans persons body image. As well as the conversation of misogyny within beauty standards. (please feel free to correct me if i said anything wrong, trying to be respectful here 😊)

I haven't watched it myself, but to anyone who are planning to watch the movie Beauty Tax I would ask that you please exercise caution in interpreting the messages it is trying to convey. When Edvasian explained the main premise of the film, I found it really suspicious because it feels like one of those media that accuse underprivileged groups of resentment, which enables people to not listen to their concerns. I mean, I personally hope I'm wrong but it feels like the plot is set up to reinforce beauty standards by depicting non-beautiful people as envious, resentful people that they would LEGISLATE against the interests of beautiful people (who are not at fault for being born beautiful). I will search for this movie immediately after this video.
As a long time watcher of Japanese films, it's pretty much a comedy skit (specifically dark humor)more on showing the absurdity of beauty standards. A lot of comics and movies tend to make issues like these look extreme just to highlight how absurd it is. It just takes a little bit of cultural familiarity to not just see or interpret literally.

I'm in my 40's and i try the best i can to deal with the signs of aging but I can see the jowls forming already. I don't have wrinkles but I can't stand seeing my face drooping. My fiance tells me its not like that, that my face is fine but I can see it; i know I'm obsessing but i have always had self-image issues as Ive been constantly told I'm ugly. I think if I had the money I would have gone through surgery, specially now as a mature woman. I used to frown upon plastic surgery but when we're in our teens and 20s we don't really think of ourselves in our 30s, 40s or even older and back in the 90s a lot of people thought plastic surgery was low or of bad taste; I remember a lot of celebrities hiding their procedures and a lot of controversial news popping up trying to out them and their procedures. I think the normalization of plastic surgery is a double edged sword because while its not as frowned upon it has now become a sign of wealth. As a side note i don't like the Kardashians at all, i think they're the epitome of toxic behavior but I can understand where Kris was coming from. I'm middle aged but I don't feel like that and I think its a kind of dysphoria in many cases because you want my inner me to match the outer me. I see my face as I grow older and I don't recognize it sometimes. I take pride in my age tho, Ive seen a lot of things and experienced a lot of things but I would like the face that I have to look like the one I had in my 20s or 30s even if people found it ugly. I think that's why the part of the vid talking about Kris's surgery hit so close to home.
If you become more beautiful with different makeup and clothes or changing your posture, would that be considered tax fraud because you're being lazy or is it tax fraud to wear makeup in the first place? what about the 2000's movies where girls take off their glasses and become beautiful? is it tax fraud to want to see clearly?
I’d rather not have outside sources telling me that my appearance isn’t enough so I could be more comfortable with myself, with or without makeup and certain clothes, because I love doing makeup and dressing up, that is purely for myself and I love being artistic and creative with my style and aesthetics. I’d rather simply being truly comfortable within my skin, and not have people tell me that it’s ugly or weird or make really creepy and unwarranted comments on my body.

My point was that it is a very complicated subject to discuss because everyone's taste is different. Yes, they can agree if someone is pretty or not, but what I feel like what real beauty should be like, and how I grasp it, is if you feel attracted or not, because it doesn't matter if you "think" that they are beautiful, thoughts and feel are different. depends on the situation, I suffer from asperger, anxiety and hyperacousis, getting into social situations is complicated and people made the effort to get to know me because I'm mildly pretty and have an original look otherwise they would have left me to my misery lol same for romantic or professional situations, it actually made my life better, not gonna lie.

I’ve always felt for the Hadid sisters (as much as one can feel pity for the ultra beautiful and wealthy, that is lol). Yolanda has always been a high pressure stage mom and no doubt caused disordered eating in those girls. Bella was born very pretty, but didn’t have the “fashion model” look like her sister, so I can only imagine feeling so bad about yourself in comparison. Like she would be the most beautiful girl an ANY room naturally, but her family put her up against the most beautiful women in the WORLD. And she didn’t inherit the more European “standards” like her sister. Just gross all around. She definitely is one of the most beautiful women (in my opinion) now. Pretty privilege is such an interesting and confusing concept to me because I get told I have pretty privilege but literally most days I believe I’m unattractive because of bodily image dysmorphia. So like am I pretty or not because people and my brain are telling two totally different stories.
It depends per person! If someone calls you pretty they genuinely think you're pretty. You can dislike the way you look and that's also okay. Theres always people who will think you're pretty and people who will think you aren't

Attractiveness is so subjective that I can’t consider pretty privilege to be a thing like how white privilege or able-bodied privilege is a thing. Because everybody has such wildly different opinions on what’s attractive and what’s not whereas race and whether you’re disabled or not is set in stone.
@@Ebrill_Owen I agree it is a pretty nuanced thing. I feel like I have a privileged because I was never ever bullied for my looks. Yet I don't relate to it, because I rarely get attention from people because of it either. I also don't try though (I don't wear make up or flashy clothes, and only have my hair in a trendy style like 3 months of the of the year. I notice when I have that particular style, I get the most attention.) But then it's like, in a way not feeling forced to participating in this type of thing and still being seen as I like is also a type of privilege. Maybe my outlook would be different if I was told I was ugly constantly, or made fun of. But basically, I don't think people can tell you if you have it or not. I think that has to be done by refection upon yourself, without you actually degrading yourself image if that makes sense.
