Have I Grown Out Of Superhero Films or Are They Getting Worse?

  • The perception of superheroes is changing, or has already changed. I used to be the first in line at the cinema to watch a new Marvel or DC movie. Cinemas used to be packed with fans but now, screenings are empty and my feeling I towards the genre I used to love, has changed. But why is that? Am I growing out of the genre or are the movies getting worse?

I’m glad you’re pointing this out. The genre is becoming way too goofy and don’t care about character anymore.

You're spot on with this video. Most moviemakers underestimate how important these characters are to the people. I never really enjoyed any Superman movie until MoS came out in 2013 because Zack and his team took the character seriously in the sense that he was grounded in our world and how things would actually be if a being like that lived among us today. I absolutely love that.

The goofy ones used to be a palate cleanser, it was nice to have the odd silly one in between the Winter Soldiers and the Iron Man 3's, but as with all comedies, these ones do not hold up to repeated viewings as well.

They’ve gone away from originality, and have become more manufactured. The Batman wasn’t everyones forte, but it was original just like Spider-man NWH. The films used to feel like an event, but it’s become more like movies just being pushed to keep your attention instead of to enlighten everyone about the character

Tbh,NWH wasn't really original.Seeing that Into the Spiderverse beat them to the punch.NWH was basically nostalgia bait the movie.

There are a few things going on here. Like Nolan's Batman I agree with you 100% on the director and just the whole new way of tackling a comic book character. He took the material seriously and it was amazing.
I always felt like with the 1st Iron man movie felt like they were trying to make a big Tom Cruise/Will Smith style blockbuster fun popcorn movie, but like Nolan they took the source material seriously.
When you look at that stretch of 2008 to End Game, this was one of those lightning in a bottle type situation. Like Gen X was in positions of power in the studios and these characters meant so much to that generation they were trying to make movies using comic book characters (not super hero) with the same weight as any other literary character.
Then they started all having these huge ensembles and Star Wars came back, Days of Futures Past finally gave us a really good X-Men movie since X2, with that huge cast.
Don't forget Marvel used to be an independent studio. That also makes a big difference. So Nolan was able to do the Dark Knight because of who he was, Any big time director could have had a similar arrangement with the studio, but those early marvel movies they were made by an independent movie company that wanted to make real comic book movies. When Disney bought them they let Marvel do what they did because everything they did was making damn near a billion dollars. So they didn't intervene at first. But like any big studio they can't help themselves, you always get a suit that thinks they can do it better than an artist and Marvel is a great example, once the studio started stepping in the movies got worse.
Star wars is another great example even though it was Fox when it was Lucas, it was George Lucas he revolutionized how movies were made of course he could do his own thing and he did and when he really was able to do what he wanted everyone hated it. Disney thought they could out star wars Lucas and they destroyed one of the most beloved properties ever.
Your whole thing in how the movies are approached now is also pretty spot on.
They all figured like people would come out no matter how bad the movie was made. Now the studios have taken over so the directors like Favreu, Joe Johnston and the Russo Brothers, Nolan, Snyder real film makers don't want to get involved. The studios won't let them do what they want so why would they go make a movie like that.
The Comic book genre is going to become poison to real directors because of what the studios are doing with them.

OurMovieNews, no you're not growing out of it. We've all just been bitterly dissapointed time and time again because the Studio let us down.
Imagine they said "WBD to cast Henry in MOS2 followed by JL2 and 3, Affleck to get his Batman solo and Fisher to continue as Cyborg in first Cinematic solo movie. WBD to let Zack complete his vision without interferences and along with other directors"
There's no way this would happen at all, by any means, but ask yourself, if this news came out a year ago... would you be excited? YES, yes you would, uou would have lost your shit.
Still, there is exciting things happening. Let's see what happens and keep positive. Its been a bumpy road.

I totally agree with you. I love the superhero genre back then during my childhood days. Henry Cavill's Superman, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man inspired me to be a superhero fan. But now recently I'm no longer enjoying it because it dosen't feel the same as my enjoyment from the previous movies. After Endgame for me the genre went downhill cuz most of the projects were goofy and boring. There are only a few projects that I have enjoyed like The Batman and No Way Home. Marvel and DC should learn their lesson by making serious projects again instead of being comedic all the time. Recent superhero movies felt like a kids movie rather than comic book movies. In basic words it's just quantity over quality.

    • @luisquintero7359
      @luisquintero7359 8 месяцев назад

But then comes the problem, Snyder doesn’t understand the core and fundamentals behind the characters. For instance, Batman isn’t supposed to kill since that’s his moral code, and breaks it anyways with no remorse or change. Another instance is Superman, who is portrayed as some sort of Jesus Christ figure in which makes him less relatable and less sympathetic and even less likable. Now I’m not saying that they needed to become jokes, but Snyder needs a clear understanding of these characters.

    • @godinacape
      @godinacape 8 месяцев назад +2

@@luisquintero7359 Snyder didn't even invent or write the character those way. Batman killed, in comics and movies before Batfleck. Superman in Jesus/messiah saviour was all there long before his version of Superman. His Superman perhaps the most relatable since he was the one that were challenged not only by the villain but the society, the media and the goverment in the form of physically and psychically.

agree 100%, raimis spider man is what made me fall in love with all things spider man, my birthdays were spider man themed, same with Nolan’s Batman and Snyders Superman, james gunn even made me love a raccoon, all these directors had there own unique takes and treated them with respect. loved iron man, captain america, endgame, the Amazing Spider man 1&2, snyderverse and endgame. now none of the movies make me feel even a fraction of what i felt for those movies. i know james gunns humor does work i just hope he doesn’t do too much of it in legacy and should leave it to the funny characters only like jimmy olsen. also i think he’s said before that he respects the directors and creatives vision and wouldn’t really intervene other than continuity issues, at least i hope. that way we could have a good contrast of seriousness and comedy in different unique ways.

The superhero genre in film has always been a roller coaster of highs and lows ever since Richard Donner showed the potential for a superhero film to be a major blockbuster with 'Superman: The Movie'. The genre has since followed the kind of pattern of highs and lows usually over a decade, films staring off as strong epics before devolving into lackluster silliness. Again look at Superman from one to four. We saw the genre gain another high in Tim Burton's Batman, which inspired several indie superhero projects such as 'The Crow', 'Darkman', and a few other 90's hidden gems before Schumacher drove it all into the ground. Then Raimi brought Spider-Man to life in the 2000's just when society needed heroes in the wake of real life terror. Things dipped again before Cristopher Nolan and John Faverau gave their respective highs in 'The Dark Knight and 'Iron Man respectively.
I think we're just in another down slope. So we're likely due for another high, hopefully. I think while James Gunn might have acknowledge the silly factor, he didn't mean it in a bad way. Everything people as people do has a level of absurdity, and we acknowledge that and just accept it as part of our lives.
I think Gunn is more or less going to want to focus on how the 'silly' factor is a part of how we all want to live that fantasy when we're young. When the world was bright and colorful and what was right and wrong were easy to understand. It's just trying to reconcile that youthful fantasy with the reality of adulthood where the crux of drama I think comes into play with superheroes. Where we all know gravity will bring us down. But we all want to believe that a man can fly.

Marvel's introduction of Gunn's GotG was the first nail on the CBM genre. It was from that very point that they started to turn every film into a comedy, so we landed in those ridiculous Love&Thunder and TheMarvels, and from where Warner wanted so desperately its own GotG that screwed a SuicideSquad movie that was actually directed by the writer of TrainingDay itself.
Now, even after TheSuicideSquad fiasco, Warner has fullfil its dream and JamesGunn is now under DC's complete control, getting the franchise to the very point where even Marvel is willing to left behind.

You said it better than every other RUclipsr talking about this topic. It’s not bc of the woke, is not bc of the unknown characters, and is not bc of the natural lifespan of the genre, it’s just only the effort to make those movies to stand out among other films, that’s the reason they were celebrated back then, because between the other generic blockbusters, they put a great amount of effort into the storytelling and the characters and gave them meaning. The nerds had the control of making the characters they love reading into “live action”, now it’s the corporate that has the control. Hopefully in 2025, with Superman Legacy and The Fantastic Four, they’ll put effort like the good old days.

There was a time when the MCU was still growing, maybe during Phase 1 and the beginning of phase 2. You could see, that the studios were trying to stay true to the material, having to please the core fanbase they could count on: Comic readers, enthusiasts, fans, people with an emotional connection to the characters in some way. So if they wanted to make money, they couln´t just make Thor a Moron or push Iron Man aside for Ironheart. The stories needed weight and gravitas aswell, because you need a solid foundation to work towards something like Thanos and the Infinity Saga. But the more mainstream the MCU became, the more and more they went away from the former core audience, and towards an audience that mostly wants spectacle, entertainment and if possible, all in one movie. So they probably calculated that more money was to be made with the regular audience member, the one without the deep connection to the characters, but the one that goes to the cinema to be purely entertained with his or her friends. And after Gunn made Guardians, the comedy was pushed into other movies more and more, no matter if it fits or not. Even to an extend that it ruined the young DCEU, after letting Snyder built its foundation.
The downward spiral began and. the MCU evolved into the creation we now experience. Add the politics and the messaging that has been pushed into most movies and series and you can see the result.
I´m curious about the DCU and Gunns Superman Movie, but when it comes to the MCU, I have my doubts. The same goes for Disney Star Wars and how they see Heroes, both new and old.

I do agree when you say the films are seen as studio products instead of films. The Raimi Spider-Man films, Nolan's Batman films, at least Phase 1 of the MCU and probably Winter Soldier, Logan and some other recent examples- like you said, there's a director's voice there instead of them feeling like movies made by committee. Those directors made films just to make films, not to be a part of some bigger plan unless they had a trilogy or series in mind.

I think in Superman: Legacy it's not impossible that they will put a "corny jokes" in some scenes, and it's a traditional Superman (throwing some corny jokes, always smiling and a hero saves a cat out from a tree) if I'm not mistaken. However, I hope they will not applying this for some heroes like Batman when it comes to telling "corny jokes". I hope DCU will be a successful under James Gunn & Peter Safran for the DC fans.

One thing I don't think is mentioned enough is that Taika Waititi and his work on Ragnarok is a major reason we have an over abundance of forced, cringey, unfunny humour in almost every superhero film nowadays.
Before Ragnarok, projects were quite balanced. Some more serious and gritty (Winter Soldier, Civil War, BVS, Wonder Woman), some normal (Dr Strange, Black Panther) and some comedy (GOTG, GOTG 2). But since Ragnarok "reinvented" Thor and everyone praised the film, it's someone made the studios think that that's the formula that works to bring audiences and more money in.

At some point the movies coming out now will prob look and feel like u have seen it before .There's only so much range u can do with a comic book movie especial!y with the characters and story u wanna tell. You will have some movies flopping badly ,some barely breaking even and others making a decent profit. Gone are the days where will see CB movies making big numbers one after d other . In my opinion, aside from decline in quality and oversaturation, current real world is one of key factors of Superhero Fatigue...
In past 3-4 years, there has been pandemic, multiple protests across the world, economic recession and ongoing wars which likely impact or change audience's taste in movie. Superhero movie once view as the way of escapism, the way for people to relief the stress from reality has now decline in popularity. We were facing reality for too much in last couple years and it might causes us to disillusioned with this kind of movie...
In the end, I feel like with current time we live in Superhero genre is about to become another page of cinema history like Sword-and-Sandal or Western genre. Will it be gone? absolutely not. But it will never reach the height like during 2010s...

I will admit I’m starting to feel a bit tired myself lately with some superhero movies even when we still get ones I love like No Way Home, The Batman, Snyder’s Justice League, Guardians 3, and Blue Beetle and yeah, it might be because of how much of them are coming out now, 2021 and 2023 I think might be some of the biggest defenders of that since we got five Marvel movies in 2021, mostly close together and DC released two making it all 7, and in 2023 we got 8 movies, and that’s just talking about movies in theaters except ZSJL which I feel like is a bit of an exception, and I think some of the shows (especially the recent Disney + Marvel shows) really haven’t been helping with that since they’ve really felt like extended movies, I feel like it might be good if we get like two years or something with maybe one movie from Marvel and/or DC so fans can still get something but gives people a bit of a breather which I think this year might somewhat do since Marvel is only releasing Deadpool 3 (at least for the MCU since we’re also getting Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter but honestly who cares about those movies). But even with the slight exhaustion, honestly I’m not sure if I’ll ever grow out of superhero movies, I’ve been following superheroes basically my whole life since me and my brother first watched Iron Man:Armored Adventures back in I think 2009 where I would’ve been maybe 2, coming up on three, I’m 17 now, will be turning 18 in September (that feels weird to say), and I don’t think I’m gonna stop because Marvel and DC are practically my life (yes, I know that’s kinda sad), I’ve been following these properties for so long that I’m not sure if I can stop after all that time and when Marvel and DC characters take up most of the spots for my favorite characters of all time, Flash, Batman, Wolverine, and Wonder Woman are all up there just ahead of the Mandalorian, Iron Man basically made me who I am and just means too much to me, Captain America is one of those kinds of people I wish I could be, Spider-Man will never get old especially when he gives me things like the Spider-Verse movies and the Insomniac games, and Superman is a similar case to Cap and is runner up for my favorite character of all time behind Sonic, these characters just mean too much to me to get me to stop after all of the good we’ve gotten out of it in the past even including the last few years after movies like The Batman which is still quality we can get if Marvel and DC would just try hard enough instead of seeming to make this stuff out of obligation like Endgame just made them (mainly Marvel) decide to barely even try aside from exceptions like NWH, Guardians 3, Loki, and Shang-Chi. I’m tired, yes, but I don’t think I’ll ever be done

IMO the issues are everything you just mentioned, bad CGI and over reliance of it, terrible writing and storytelling, in some cases using certain characters to check certain political agendas instead of really treating them as characters. What independent films like Godzilla Minus One have taught us is that you don’t need 200 or 300 million to make a good movie, you just need to know how to manage the little budget you have.

I think you're not alone in your sentiment about enjoying superhero films. So, it's NOT JUST YOU.
I don't think it's a matter of "outgrowing" superheroes. I think it's a combination of a number of bad things.
The studios are taking too much control. They care more for superficial things such as critics and trying to copy the MCU's formula of humor.
The MCU isn't all that either. I rather liked their early MCU films. ALL the latest films are pure trash. Humor is a good quality to have, but it can't be the ONLY formula. Humor alone does NOT equal success.
Kevin Feige made sure the MCU had a certain formula that couldn't be strayed from. That's why when you watch a new Marvel film, it feels like a Marvel film you already watched. There's no originality anymore.
Gone are the days of a director's vision being seen. Especially when it comes to James Gunn. He is a one man studio. He seems to be writing, directing and casting, etc. Way beyond what a Kevin Feige role would be.
But another major reason for the superhero downfall is the FACT that ACTVISTS are now being hired as writers for our modern comic books and comic book movies. Nobody wants to be preached at. So character and story suffer.
It's also a fact that brands sell. Many superhero films now lack quality vfx, etc. because the studio seems confident that it'll sell. Oh, don't worry. It's an MCU film. This will be another movie to make bank. But it's now backfiring. Folks are catching on.
This may be one of the reasons for Hollywood's hate on Zack Snyder. He's a director that is catching the attention of many fans whether you like him or not. Fact. He's had his OWN SNYDER CON!! How many directors do you know has had that?
He is all that and a bag of chips under the Netflix umbrella. Netflix loves him. They say the more Zack, the better. Why is this? I think it's because Hollywood can't control a narrative with him. To exactly follow activist messaging.
Sure, he'll have a character here or there that might be representative to the diversity crowd, but it's not central to character and story. So, the film won't suffer like so many Hollywood films do today.
Disney even acknowledges that they have lost money because they adhere to the social justice woke mob.
In the end, it's not you. It's them. Many of us feel the same as you, Our Movie News. -OG

I agree with almost all of this. The only part I disagree with is the idea that DC hit its peak. DC was kneecapped before it could hit its stride with BvS. It almost stood back up with ZSJL, but then it was shoved off balance and since then it’s never gotten back up. I want Gunn to succeed but I’m cautious. The MCU on the other hand hasn’t had anything good since No Way Home. Guardians 3 tried, but it was so-so while No Way Home was a perfect 10.

The MCU has one big shiny beacon of hope coming soon: Deadpool 3. Exactly what we need after a very mixed bag in the post Endgame era. We're also getting close to the end of the Bob Chapek Disney era soon, and the old DC is over. Hopefully there's change coming, because the box office tells the truth, people aren't interested in these movies anymore. We need a higher level than simply "content", we need to see that they're taking the characters seriously even if they're funny, and write real stories that matter. It's not "content", it's art. Treat it with respect.

The problem with modern Superhero films are the forced messaging and lack of vision for overall story. The writers are trash and no one takes the movies seriously. They've become self-parodies.Marvel was trash ever since Kevin Feige took over full control. WB was always interfering with the movies, so they ended up ruining them. I just wish that we could get some great creatives back in charge.

Superhero movies have declined in quality quite a bit but the microscope has become so intense it’s become a little bit ridiculous. I actually get a kick out of the comments from Gunn as he makes a good point. The seriousness some people take towards these movies has gotten out of hand. I’m not saying the silliness is ok but these are fiction and there needs to be an appropriate amount of levity to counter the violence and aggression. I love this genre and adore the style of a Zack Snyder which is more dark and serious but so many out there didn’t and overall they got their way. He won’t be making DC movies moving forward and James Gunn will. Let’s hope he decides to contain himself and not get carried away with his sense of humor. I don’t think the genre is dead but it’s on its way of the bottom hasn’t been hit

I don't even have to watch the video to say neither. I assume you're diving into the topic of "superhero fatigue". And to quickly disprove that concept, I'll just say two things.
    1. People have this odd tendency to equate their personal dislike of something to mean it's bad.
    2. People also have a tendency to blame a real sense of fatigue they're having not on the fact they haven't been enjoying that last handful of movies, but instead on the enttire genre as a whole.
You're not tired of superhero films. You're tired of superhero films you don't like. And that's fine. It's okay to want to watch movies you like, and it's okay to acknowledge when you don't like something. But you need to be careful when you acknowledge those things and not fall into those two traps I mentioned above.

No, you are not in the minority. It’s not the genre itself that’s the problem, it’s the quality of the films that are the problem. What is also the problem is the people that are put in charge of the films, they either don’t care or simply hate the characters they are put in charge of adapting to the big screen and they have a clear agenda as well. Justice League is the perfect example. After getting rid of Zack Snyder, they turned the film completely upside down and tried making it like the comedic cute that they do for marvel and it turned out to be the biggest piece of garbage I have ever watched. Then, four years later when we got to finally see the Snyder cut, it was absolutely way better and I wished that THAT version was released in 2017.

Okay, I liked most of the Doctor Strange Multiverse Of Madness except for the wake bits which were minor compared to what was done in the 4th Thor movie. As to DC I appreciated The Batman with the emphasis on him being a detective and his back story with the Joey Chill/Lew Moxon connection that I have preferred over any continuity since. But what happened in the Flash especially with the post credit sequence with Aquaman in the Flash movie was awful! The second SHAZAM film I liked but I was getting interested in what would have happened with Superman/Black Adam and the connection to SHAZAM, more so than Gunn's announced plans for the future!
