I used the knife and lifted the panel, pressed the red button as you said, and it worked on shifting to neutral, drive or reverse. We found your video after a google search, and it worked PERFECTLY. Removing the gear shift cover and pushing the red button allowed us to get the car home. We took it to a BMW mechanic, and they quoted close to $5K to repair it. $3200 for the part, and another $1500 for labor. Anyone know if there is a cheaper way to fix this? Is it ok to continue to operate the car by pushing the red button every time? Since it's only used to take our son to school, we don't really drive it much
okay people solve this one mine is in limp in mode replaced fluid filter speed sensors and had abs module rebuilt removed both battery cables and jumped them together like in this video and did the gas pedal trick also and guess what it came out of limp mode til the first time i punched it in drive hello limp mode your back.

One serious question bro , are you sure this reset will “fix” the issue? “IF” there was some serious issue? Because I am in the same situation , i would reset it BUT is it safe to do so? Or it would just “mask” the real fault / issue / problem? Because I wouldn’t like it to mask the actual problem and later it literally damaged the gearbox ?

Theoretically with battery power all settings are saved. When you release the battery cable there is no power thus all settings are gone. What shops do is to download the setting to save it somewhere, after battery is changed, then upload it back. But BMW seems to have a self-powered memory to store settings so that they won't be lost.

It could be something simple; maybe a spring might have come loose. Take it to a mechanic you trust because most of them will try and say it’s your transmission and this can cost you 5k or more.
Well what you did was clear all codes from the car by draining it. So if any codes show up after it’ll mean a sensor or part is bad. Most likely a sensor in most cases

Just had my glow plug module changed, same day I was driving and this fault came up. I managed to drive home safely whilst it was limping. I switched off the car and the fault has gone. I've put it sport and manually changed gears to check if its working and it seems fine. Should I still get it checked or you reckon the issue has gone
I think the issue is gone; the transmission fault will come on if you rev up the engine to fast but will go back off when you turn off the vehicle and restart after a minute or two.
@@weldingandstuff not for me...this car is one i picked for my hobby car previous owner put 4000 dollars worth of modded cams in it had the dealer reset and reprogram everything he got it stuck in the snow and went into limp mode while he was rocking it and will not stay out of limp mode. this is a 2000 540i scanned it when i first got it there was 5 codes had the abs module rebuilt all codes disappeared except for trans fail safe program code is all i get no info codes.

I wouldn't recommend that any of you who are not knowledgeable on them take on an E60. I have several but I know the car and have the diagnostic and coding gear and ability. If you want a BMW get a nice low mile E39. Much less complicated. Not everything has to be coded when changed. Almost nothing on thr early ones. Also nicer to drive, much more comfortable seats and much better looking inside and ouit.

You may want to change your trans atf oil and filter. BMW says you don't need to but you do!
