The 2023 Detroit Grand Prix was a hot mess...

- Apologies that this one is so late... But Indycar returned Detroit for the first time since 2019 last weekend, or to be more specific, Indycar returned to downtown Detroit for the first time since 1991! It was a new circuit that was short, twisty... basically another Nashville... as such... mayhem ensued... here's my take!

As someone who was actually there, I have to disagree with the immediate title of this video. It was incredibly entertaining.
>implying a hot mess can't be entertaining
Everyone loves a good dumpster fire or train wreck
I 100% agree. It was really fun and I absolutely loved being at the turn 3 stands
Hot messes are normally entertaining for people who aren't involved
@@GARBO96 like dixon said, it's never supposed to be easy.
“McLaren were imploding” your gunna need to be more specific
I must confess, I enjoy your Comedy reviews of Indy and F1 much better then the races, these days. I don't hold out much hope for the F1 in Canuckia. After all without Grosjean in F1 anymore the talent for setting cars on fire, is missing in F1 these days.
montréal's a good track, just f1 isn't the right series for it. bring Indycars there, though, and you've got a race very much worth watching.
For anyone who didn't see the race. it was not a hot mess. in fact it was a great race. there were wrecks tho...
33% of the race was under yellow, the track sucks. Indy car is fun, not this track
Yes it was. It was still a good race though.
Agreed..I didn’t think it was a mess at all.. now the first music city Grand Prix was rough
I was there in person. Much better for spectators than the old layout at Belle isle. Just pick a parking garage and you have a fantastic view
It was a great mess though
It wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be! There was great racing, just some avoidable contact sprinkled in all over the place.
Never watched indycar but Will makes me think every race is chaotic
@@core_russell3869 it wasnt a clean race, to Will's credit. There's always crashes in Indy. Some forced, some racing incidents. It's the price of a hypercompetitive series with difficult to drive cars.
It was mid, thankfully not a crapshoot
It wasnt that bad Will. It was actually much better then everyone expected. Even Sting Ray Robb did happen twice and did not make it another Baltimore or Nashvile
oh, god, baltimore...... that was a tremendously horrible circuit.
“Hot mess”? This one IndyCar race had more competition than the entire last season and a 1/2 of F1.
Agreed
This is true. But I just find these two-miles-of-paddle-boat-river tracks tiresome (no pun intended, but...)
Road America should be good.
This is true. But I just find these two-miles-of-paddle-boat-river tracks tiresome (no pun intended, but...)
Road America should be good.
Truth
The track is a meme track… like I really enjoy Indy car, but this track is dog shit. Indy left COTA….
Like you have road Atlanta a real track that could provide amazing action, but this why not race in a parking deck next time? We can even try a jump from one parking deck to an adjacent one, ooo what about the Disney Gp hosted around the castle
Minor point, they didn't stop racing at Belle Isle in 2019, they've been there the last few years as well.
We only skipped 2020
21’ we had the double header still at Belle Isle
22’ was only 1 race
HOW DARE HE MISS THIS
Missed the perfect opportunity to say "I think Ericsson hit Rahal this time."
Turns out that wasn’t true either
It was Benjamin Peterson
This is also like the 3rd time this season a rookie just rams themself into the back of an already wrecked car ... lol
Absolutely loving this Indycar series. I’ve tried watching F1 but the utter dominance of whatever team has a better car that year just makes it seem boring. Indycar appealed to me because it has a relatively even playing field and since I first started watching this season it’s been great!
Welcome! Glad you've found your way over!
I love this sponsor, they make a fantastic product for an unbeatable price! 🙃
Thank you 😊
grosjean's suspenion failed in the rear thats why he crashed
I kinda had a feeling that was the case. Thank you
one way or another Romain's gonna crash, if he doesn't by itself it will be the Universe itself to do it
Failed when he hit the inside wall, even left a wheel mark they showed on tv
No no no… I think Ericsson hit him
@user-tc2kl3vy9e hitting the wall doesn't matter a split second before he crashes into the outside wall? Lol that's was a classic street race crash
Is there also going to be a comedy review of the 24 hours of Le Mans? Or are you only interested in open wheel racing.
“Sinking faster then the Belgrano” goodness gracious that caught me off guard😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the Indycar content its the best!
Could you also do a comedy review of the 24 h of le mans? Would be really fun!
FP1 Will made us wait but delivered..:Detroit was awesome, lots of action and drama……Road America with new pavement should see some fast laps. But the length of the track can make it spread out and a totally different type of race then this past weekend.
The NFL Sunday Indycar intro was phenomenal 😂😂
The NFL intro was SO GOOD!!!
Also shoutout to "Lil Dave" for following haha.
Phenominal as always
You know, if you're feeling particularly masochistic, the 24 hours of le mans is on this sunday, and ferrari are trying to fight for the win. MIght be worth a laugh or two. Also, you're the reason that I've started paying some attention to indycar, so thanks for the videos!
Cheers man!
Imagine Maldonado, defranchesco, kyvyt and latifi in Indycar
Kyvat isn't too bad tbh. He's doing pretty good in LMP2 class with Prema in WEC
Derby.
Indycar raced in Detroit in 2021 and 2022 as well, at Belle Isle just like 2019!
Yeah, you messed up. Indycar has been there in 2021 and 2022 and It was not as bad.
LOVE THE NFL INTRO Will 🤣
Pretty sure there was an Indy car race on Belle Isle last year
Can we expect anything from Le Mans, even if it's a tad out of your open-wheelhouse? 😏 I would love a review in your style, for either the practise/quali sessions or even both them and the race!
DON'T EVER. CHANGE. And I'm not sure what's funnier...the review, or the ever-predictable literal-take comments. I've long defended us Yanks from Brits who say we have no sense of humor, especially ironic/sardonic style...but it's clearly time to accept the horrible reality.
More entertaining than Belle isle.
That place is a sleeping pill. However It's obvious this course had some sections that were just too tight, but
Why don't they design a indycar that actually has a manageable turn radius for street/road courses? I understand it's tough because of they wide array of track styles indycar has but C'mon.?
Power steering? Whatever. Then have a separate speedway chasis.
That belgrano joke tho... 😂😂😂😂
Yes
Beans
beans
It really was just that nuts of a race!!! Great recap!!!! Thoughts on Romain? The way he looked after that crash I think hes going to be looking for another ride soon???
turns out his suspension broke which caused his crash, maybe he'll be the one to split
I don’t think he’s looking for another ride but that was the self criticism of a man that is frustrated.
They’ve raced in Detroit in 2021 and 22
Belle isn't Detroit.
@@luckypennybenny yes it is
@@luckypennybenny - You’re an idiot. Belle Isle is absolutely in Detroit. I go there almost every day, it is amazing.
Decent race. Indy nxt race 1 was awesome after that bad start. My bigger issue is that its a race around a bunch of parking garages.
Flavor Flav was awesome at this race
Wow, real racing (not roundy round, sorry Nascar fans, though the Le Mans 24hr entry will be fun to watch) with passing and accidents, wish F1 was half this good to watch.
The TEASING is over...
NOW THE BUSSS'N BEGINS!!
Indy cars are tougher than f1 cars and can handle the rough roads
Just FYI, they raced on the island in Detroit in 2022 and 2021
This is why IndyCar should’ve stayed at Belle Isle
The fact the race turned out better than it was thought it could be is a really nice surprise.
That move at the start, How tf did Grosjean pull that off...
Also can't really blaim him this time with a car failure. he has a good run, something happens out of his control
What is this title, it wasn’t a mess at all!
Hot mess? 100 laps around Detroit, no serious wrecks and it was more competitive racing than F1 will ever have again Seperation from 1-5th was on average lower than fhe seperation 1st fo 2nd in Spain for F1. Some track bumps making the cars run tall is legit the only valid criticism. If the cars could have been lower we could have had some more 2nd gear corners.
Don't apologize, just push them vids out as if grosjean slipped on the inside.
They raced on Belle Isle last year, not 2019.
@fp1will
You okay mate? I got pretty bloody crook last week and only just starting to move around again... Can't think of any reason you've not uploaded more reviews given the recent speedy upload efforts..
I'm avoiding the F1 results to make sure not to spoil my watching of your work...
Watched McLaughlin live (ish) earlier, typical dissatisfied with the old mate...
Might start supporting Armstrong... Oh, wait... Wtaf Ganashery?
I seriously do not understand how Grosjean has even managed to get a drive after his career in F1. In fact, it seems the only reason people forget how crash-prone he was is because Maldonado was a pay-driver in the series at the same time as him - not because Maldonado crashed more (he didn't - seriously, look at the numbers. Maldonado had fewer accidents than Grosjean). This is a guy who had what, 9 accidents in his first 12 F1 races - 7 of them first-lap crashes including one that put out 5 drivers at the Belgian GP, was fined 50,000 EUR and banned from racing. He was also at the end of a tirade from his own team principle in his last seasons with HAAS - and seriously, most importantly - what just gets completely overlooked - his 'big accident' was *caused by himself*, but people choose to have mercy on criticising him because it was such a massive accident (which is just utterly insane - what if he had caused it, but it had been someone else in the wreck).
So yeah, why anyone expects him to be any less crash-prone in Indycar is entertainment in itself.
As someone who was there on the Friday of the race, it was disappointing. Never got to see the Indycars run as they kept it late in the day. I was there in 1982 for the initial Detroit GP and was there for all the subsequent F1 runs till Indycar took over and attended most Belle Isle races. Kudos to the drivers on Sunday who did their best. It wasn't a shitshow, but its also not a race track. My pick to win the race (2 days before), Alex Palou stated it was too short and too narrow for that size of car. He was correct and if Bud Denker and Mike Montri (and Roger Penske) are listening to the series and drivers they will try to improve the course. And smooth it out also. I drove it 2 weeks before the race as they are public roads and even in my rocket powered Hyundai (joke) it was bumpy. Cannot imagine what its like in a race car. Just as an aside. In 1982, I was there on the Friday of the race and it was disorganized of course. The garage was almost near where the race last week was run (till it was moved to Cobo underground parking garage the following year). I can still see to this day 2 Alfa Romeo's coming out. One for Andrea DeCesaris and one for Bruno Giacomelli in Marlboro garb. The cars were shockingly tiny (and elegant...just fantastic to see). A minute later, a Brabham came out in white and blue and it was long and narrow. A Gordon Murray special. Today's Indycar is designed to withstand road courses and ovals but they are huge compared to the 1982 cars seem like junior cars. Why race on a tight track like Detroit or Nashville with a big sloppy oaf of a car? Time for Dallara and Indycar to evolve into something new.
This kinda makes me excited for Formula 1 in Las Vegas. If the roads are just as shit, it'll be a nightmare for 80% of the field.
I know about the resurfacing of the track, but that doesn't mean it'll be perfect.
To be honest A: the first race at Nashville started out as a cluster but toward the end with Herta Hunting down a gas saving ericsson was rather fun and exciting to watch.
B. Detroit was actually a fun race..and I was waiting for someone to blame Graham Rahal on Patos pit lane issue..but didn't happen oh well
Certainly an ugly race, optically. Concrete everywhere, looked like The Matrix Reloaded. My wife looked at the tv and said "Detroit is a dump."
i can guarantee you it will be well worth your time watching INDYCAR at Road America over the other race. INDYCAR at Road America is one of the best motor races of the year.
a hot mess? not at all.
but the fact is it shows just how amazing of a racing series INDYCAR is if this race is considered ‘bad’. this race was thrilling.
I'm really loving that IndyCar is getting more exposure! Keep up the great work!
If the ‘23 Detroit GP did anything, perhaps it was to make me think the complaints about Belle Isle were a bit ridiculous.
What's wrong with the previous Detroit track? Was great to watch most times i watched races there... And helluva fun to drive it on iRacing. Decent location too.
Looks like a track where you need F1-levels of talent. Not Colton Herta and F1's professional derbycar racer Grosjean 😂
Vegan tyres 😭😭😭😭
It really just needed some.rubber put down and turn 1 smothed out i bit more and it would have been top notch......that being said come next yr....it could us another mile added on to it
Haven't raced in Detroit since 2019? There was a double header weekend in 2021 and the last race on Belle Isle in 2022.
This title is a nice clickbait lie. Race was fine, the track just needs a repave, and the atmosphere was good enough. This title is more of a hot mess than the race.
Please indycar....enough with the street circuits, we have so many great short track ovals and natural terrain road courses in this country.
Leave it to Detroit, the armpit of America, to provide a track that was seemingly made upon an old K-Mart parking lot.
Ummm. They raced in Detroit last year, in fact, they only skipped 2020 due to the pandemic.
I watched it on the telly. While watching it I began to think that RoGro would make the whole race without..never mind.
Yeah I think this might be an awful hot take by you my guy. I attended the race and I can safely say that it was definitely not the disaster you claim it was. Nice try.
Omg, I’ve been waiting for your video on this race all week! I thought you aren’t going post it.
Can we have some real tracks, IndyCar, and get rid of some of the more ridiculous street circuits?
Although I did fall asleep watching at first, I rewatched the rest at had more of a blast watching than the Spanish gp
You've got to admit that vegan tires last significantly longer than the ones made of pork & cheese.
Wonder if we’re getting a 24 hours of LeMans review?
That would be awesome.
That track is quite possibly the ugliest, bumpiest track I’ve ever seen!
I only caught the last 22 laps of this race because of my damned job and uh, it was something
At this point Will should do an ESPN Speedworld for meme review races
Got to watch some of this race while I was getting sushi with my mother in law and my partner, it was great :D
Totally disagree with the opinion is this video.
I was there. It was very entertaining.
The green alternate tires are only 5% renewable rubber. Don't ask me how I know this.
Another Nyan cat flag at the Grand Prix. That's 2-in-a-row.
as everyone else is saying, this was definitely a good race.
Grosjean’s beat up hurt my soul. Like it was so painful
I was ready to crap all over this event, and it turned out to be a pretty great street race.
I thought the Detroit race was good. Much better than I expected.
2021 Nashville was a hot mess. This wasn't even close to that.
i actually enjoyed the race... they gotta do some work on the surface though
You failed to mention the mental illness that was the pit lane situation
Indycar >>>>> F1
the hairpin was incredible. passing on the outside!
Much Better than the Azerbaijan grand prix 😂
20 minutes left 🎉
Are you going to do a 24 hrs Le Mans Review?
That was Mario that hit the truck. Michael hit Mario.
This comment section is hating on this vid hard lol
Love your videos mate
Funny and informative
we need the red flag bit!!!... pleeeeeaaaaseeee!!!
1:22 Isn't that Michael and Mario Andretti?
I still prefer Belle Isle. Great intro btw. 👍
Hah! Chortled at the Falklands reference
Should do a video on the 24 hours of le mans
Its a show for a Michigander who goes
I cant wait for the Lemans review.
