  • The Qashqai is an extremely popular vehicle both locally and internationally. After having attended its SA national media launch, we spent some more time exploring what it offers.
The Qashqai now features a newly designed front bumper with imposing V-motion grille. On the front end, the vehicle also now features very stylish and imposing LED “Boomerang” style daytime running lights. Swooping lines and a sharper aggressive body helps give the latest generation Qashqai a more imposing, sporting presence.
The rear bumper has also been re-designed and the body has grown by 17 mm in length, while the height and width remain unchanged. From the side profile, your eyes are immediately drawn to the new and unique Qashqai alloys which are available in either 17- or 19-inch.
The interior now sports further sculpted seats and an even more premium build. Nissan has insulated the cabin incredibly well, and even on our commute through the bustling Johannesburg CBD, the ride remains quiet, comfortable and cosseting at all times. Adding further icing to the plush interior space, this latest generation model is available with a large touchscreen multimedia system in the higher trim levels and even pin-sharp BOSE audio.
The word “CityProof” was almost certainly conceived when addressing the tech element of the new vehicle. As we experienced back in late 2017 at the Nissan X-Trail launch, the Qashqai now features Nissan’s very sophisticated Intelligent Mobility system (NIM). NIM allows the vehicle to use sophisticated systems in order to assist in mitigating a potential collision. The system is perfect for city driving and adds a sure sense of complete safety thanks to features such as Intelligent Blind Spot Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Around View Monitor, Intelligent Cross Traffic Alert and Moving Object Detection.
This latest generation Qashqai is available with two engine variants, namely a 1.2-litre turbopetrol engine with 85 kW and 190 Nm of torque with either a 6-speed manual transmission or CVT or a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine with 81 kW and 260 Nm of torque as driven here.
I was able to experience both engines and found them both to offer solid performance. I particularly like the lower end grunt offered by the 1.5-litre turbodiesel unit. Fuel economy is also very impressive, with the 1.5-litre turbodiesel averaging 5.9-litres/100km.
The Qashqai first made its debut back in 2007. It introduced the world to the term “Crossover,” and over the years Nissan has built on an incredibly popular platform which is able to offer space, comfort, luxury and sophistication.
With a boot which measures in at 430 litres (680 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat), bold new styling and a world of safety features, the new Qashqai is certainly a perfect “CityProof” family crossover.

How is 1.5 dci vs 1.6 petrol motor? I've heard some weaknesses of 1.5 dci, because is from Renault factory... While 1.6 petrol is Nissan motor. Any suggestion?
