  • In Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree many signs point to the twisted creation of the living jars. The new DLC contains many dark secrets, the Living Jars creation being one of them. Are these jars found in the shadow real failed experiments or a normal by-product of the dark magic used in the creation of these living jars?

I think the biggest difference between the shadowlands jars and the lands between jars, is that the shadowlands ones are created by using living beings and the lands between ones are created by using dead beings, probably warriors fallen in battle

Neat detail, the lids on jars in the lands between have an image of the Erdtree stamped into them, while jars in the land of shadow do not.

The erdtree Jars are jars brought to life through a ritual by stuffing them full of corpses and sending them to travel around collecting the dead before arriving at a minor erdtree or the erdtrees roots, where they are smashed open and the corpses become fertalizer for the tree and the dead can be reborn.
The shadowland jars are the practice the above was originally based on. The hornsent discovered the numen shamans ability to merge their flesh with others and would stuff them into jars along with numerous other people to force them to fuse together in an attempt to create a greater being. The numen were at the bottom of the social ladder in hornsent society to the point where the hornsent considered the shamans to exist solely for the purpose of being stuffed into the jars and fused with others.

jars also have a connection to erdtree. you can find stacked jars near erdtrees

Yea for sure! Those jars must be related to some sort of Erdtree burial tradition. I'm not sure I'd have to really think about it. But I think the jars in the DLC shadow realm are a bit different from the base game.

15:20 This looks more like a hidden sickbay for many injured/dying Jars (alongside some healthy ones) which indicates that Messmer was compassionate enough to house, and attempt to treat and rehabilitate injured Jar-folk. Sadly, it seems most of them have gone just as feral and insane as the rest of their kind in the Land of Shadow.

Don't think it's just compassion. The jars in the shadow realm are made up of the shamans, which Marika is. Messmer probably recognised this and wanted to try and help them.

I wonder if that specific Hornsent who said these cruel words to the shamans lived long enough to be subject to similar cruelties by Messmer’s crusaders when they invaded. I don’t know how long Hornsent lived but assuming he lived to see the crusade take place, I can only imagine it shifting from him whipping shamans with tooth whips and shoving them in jars like its an ordinary day to him being being captured by the crusaders before enduring days of being beaten and branded by serpent flails while being yelled at with slurs and obscenities by them such as being “Graceless scum” who’s only purpose is to be hunted, dehorned, impaled and burned before being forced to march alongside fellow Hornsent who’ve been rounded up, beaten, branded and dehorned to a furnace golem that has yet to come to life. As the Hornsent are being pushed and crammed inside the golem to the point where’s it’s getting hard to breathe, they are given a speech by a Black Knight captain who says that though they are graceless vermin with no place in the order, their lives will at least serve one purpose: as kindling for their holy crusade. The Hornsent reminisces on those shamans back in Bonny Village and realizes that he has become a victim to the same cruelties he inflicted on them. However, he has no time to think of his current predicament as the crusaders set the golem aflame and the screams of countless Hornsent and the stench of their burning flesh fill the air as the golem comes to life.
So ends the life of one Hornsent among hundreds, now used to fuel a lifeless machine of death and murder as it marches onto the battlefield. And so, the crusade continues.

I think the jars in shadow keep is an attempt by marika and messmer trying to save the shaman people only to realized they are far gone.
However in the study process marika found out that the jars can be used as part of edtree burial ritual

So was Iron Fist Alexander a criminal, or rather a collection on criminals at one point, maybe warmongers?
Or are the Living Jar in the Lands Between made differently then then those in the Land of Shadows?
I know Jar Bairn implies they are rare as their kind is poached by Perfumers, so I assume that its because the Shamans are not there to create more.

    • @consternationevolved
      @consternationevolved  Месяц назад +2

The jars in the Lands Between are poached for their magical properties. I don't think Alexander was a criminal. I'm not sure if the creation process itself is different.

The Lands Between jars are made of fallen warriors. The jars hold their corpses and bring them to Minor Erdtrees to be reborn again.
Marika’s final way of revenge against the Hornsent was taking their jar method and changing it into something noble

This is going to sound unhindged... I think Marika is also responsible for putting her own people into jars... Their foreheads have what looks like Marikas rune and Destined death (?). Its hard to see up close. Marikas rune descruption says she personally bestows the rune to others and blinds those who receive it. The Erdtree healing incantation says she knew there was no one left, which i would interpret that as she knew she did that to het own people. Theres not really any indication so far that her and her own people faught back. I think thats her original sin and Messmer knew. Messmer has a medical wing in his castle where there's quite a few living jars who died there. Since Messmer has Marikas rune as an eye, she was trying to also blind him to her own wrongdoing after he found her secret. Obvs she put ger rune in his eye for other reasons, but i think this is another reason to keep in mind. Why was she doing it? The giant gate is one thing, to sacrifice her own people to become a god, to transport her people to the lands between to power the erdtree. Those are my guesses. Hornsent says she betrayed them which i beleive is her sending Messmer to wage war against them. She sanctioned the actions, then when Messmer found out she attempted to blind him and sent him after them to cover her tracks. Shes cursed with the sins of her betrayal against her own people, the hornsent, and abandoning her children.
Messmer deserved better. The shamans deserved better. Marika is a disgusting being.

I dont think that shadowland pots are made different from erdpots since they both pop unlike the shamans. My guess, they were using them to make the pots stronger and more conjoined or too find a cheaper/easier way of making living pots
